- Harriet Harman gave her final speech as an MP after more than 40 years in the House of Commons on Friday, 24 May.
The "Mother of the House" was first elected in 1982 and holds the record as the longest-ever continuously serving female Member of Parliament.
Ms Harman used her final speech to pay tribute to her late husband, Jack Dromey, and her children for the support they have provided her.
She also encouraged women to enter politics, reflecting that though at times being an MP has been hard she "wouldn't regret a single day."

Best of luck Harriet!Thank you for your public service.
Classy lady, tirelessly worked for her constituency (where she is deservedly popular) and her work on tightening up legislation to tackle domestic abuse has enabled many women to sleep more safely.
So, in 42 years as an MP we still need huge numbers of women's refuges...Did she fail? Or just make a dent in the masculine wall of misogny?
@@albertbrammer9263 it’s all available to read up on if you’re interested in assessing her contribution. The Equality Act certainly redefined acceptable behaviour in a domestic setting because it used to be widely accepted that ‘shrewish or uppity’ wives could expect a thump from a husband now and then (Harman’s legislation played a huge role in changing attitudes. It didn’t stop domestic violence but it certainly made it much more socially unacceptable). Anyway it’s easy to access more detailed information yourself if you’re genuinely interested.
I'm not a Labour supporter but I am a supporter of great MP's and I very much admire Harriet for being a good and faithful public servant. Thank you and best of luck
A very honest woman with integrity.Thank you Harriet for your years of service.

Honest she is a f ing disgrace
Nothing but a reprobate .
P.I.E......
Exactly . And all the other politicians and media and police know this, and yet she is so establishment . Oh , hang on , maybe there is a clue in that statement ....
Proto Indo European ?
You beat me to it.
Cheers!
Since the year I was born
Despite being 6 years older than May, Harman looks a lot younger
You reckon
How is that important or relevant? Who cares! What they've done and what they have to say is what matters.
@@lisataylor9079 a bit touchy don’t you think. I can see you’re not a trivia fan
Imagine being proud of having never voted against the party line ... 42 years of late nights and family occasions missed to do a job that could have been done by a mindless robot.
Scores point for length of public service but very Marmite. Considering the standards of current MPs she is an intellectual colossus.
Not for me but all the best
What a beautiful speech. Post election I hope we have more cross party legislation.
Well done for bigging up a well known protector of , and promoter of paedophilia . P.I.E. ring any bells ? And also nobody has heard a single word from her about the on going organised mass rape of white children by brown skinned Muslims in this country . I wonder why not ?
There will be lots of rightwing cross-party legislation
But if the Prime Minister presides over his current government, I mean you should stay on as MP.
The person most likely to become my MP at the next General Election blocks anyone who disagrees with him, has been parachuted in from a London council constituency to the Sussex seat he is standing in. He is Labour.
Go see him when he is in public, make the points and demand answers.
Welcome to my world with a corrupt conservative MP.
Has Margaret Beckett given a farewell speech? I know she's stepping down but as her constituent I haven't heard anything since she announced this in 2022😅
Maybe she has changed her mind. 😂
So few of her own side of the house, more conservatives
They would be out working for the next election. Those on the other side have nothing to work for, they’re either standing down or know they’re out.
Quite a few of the labour party either barred or in prison..
"It is not fit that you should sit here any longer. You have sat here too long for any good you have been doing LATELY… In the name of God go."
Oh look, the P.I.E
Space and waste. Richly rewarded.
I cannot agree that the Commons is better today than it was 42 years ago. In those days the majority of MPs had come into parliament after having lived useful lives elsewhere. Today they are, with a few exceptions, professional politicians who know nothing about life outside parliament, to the detriment of the country.
Agree entirely 👍
Glad to see the back of Ms Harperson.
Well, controversial.
Respect
Going to miss her..Cllr Sandra Rhule has
She will be missed 😢
Not by any victims of paedophilia..

One of the best speeches in recen year. . A bit sad that more people from thr Tories than Labour seemed to be present.
Nevertheless, both Harriet Harman's and Theresa May's speeches gave a glimmer of hope.
Final speech, well that can't be bad.
It's funny that you can look at your life and realise you achieved nothing for the public. But you can look at your bank balance and be proud of the money you made. She starts her speech saying l did as l was told but lam a woman that did that 😂
Harman is like a turd that just won't flush..
Why isnt this promoter of paedophillia not in jail ?
Well said!

Bigging up the workers on her way out. You can’t deny that she’s respectful.
Why can we not have this in the USA? Gracious, kind, hopeful....

Good to see the back of Hopeless Hattie Harman. Promoted way beyond her ability and been there far too long.
your right thats why labour party as been in mess hope she keeps within speed limit
Queen of worn out Champagnesocialists.
Disaster for England.
Grow up. Yoour words say farmore about you than her.
BYE 😂😂😂
When she was leading the party, she broke away from the manifesto she was elected on, and made the parliamentary Labour party support Camerons brexit referrendum. Everyone knows what came next. An incredibley harmful politician.
Everyone knows what happened next - the rich, privileged and spiteful spent 8 years whining and crying like spoilt children because "Johnny uneducated poor boy" voted to leave a dictatorship.
The ego of these final speeches is tiring. None of this should have ever been about you!

@@carlharding5311he won’t reply 😂
@carlharding5311 Whatever part of the world you live in you should learn men are banned in many constituencies in UK because it's women only in the Labour Party and cannot be legally challenged in practice. You cannot prove any harm if you can never ever be on the list at the location.
