      Totally agree, however, once it became clear that Guyot wasn't paying attention on port and hadn't seen them, surely Enright should have ducked under their stern (and protested by all means). That would have saved 11th hours race for the sake of a few seconds. He just seemed to freeze - probably understndable.

      You are suggesting an utterly impossible maneuver that would have been very dangerous and likely resulted in a nearly head-on collision. The consequences would have been catastrophic for both boats.
      As the stand on boat in this situation it is the responsibility of the starboard boat to stay course which is exactly what 11th Hour did until it became clear Guyot was not altering course. At that point 11th Hour tried to tack away.
      Enright did not freeze at all. He was doing exactly what he was suppose to do.

    Let's remember that in Newport in-port race, such a contact has been avoided for just one or two meters, between Team Malizia and Holcim.
    Abby Ehler was furious as it seems that Malizia refused a priority, but I guess this is the same kind of problem, most likely Malizia Team didn't see Holcim.
    This is a particular issue on an IMOCA : short crew, closed hull because designed for solo VDG, so not adapted at all for match racing / in-port race due to the lack of visibility..
    On a VO65 this is different, this is an open hull, more crew you can put a team member permanently at the front of the boat
    But let's say that with little effort, we could imagine that a team could warn another for priority sending a special message via the onboard communication radio (VHF). It would be not so difficult to define a "warning" process.

      Nobody said that 11th hour is in fault.
      You did understand nothing to my message little fanatic boy.
      It seems you don't know what is IMOCA at all, the only thing you know is "Charlie Enright".
      You don't understand the fundamental differences between IMOCA and VO65 that make such incident far more probable on a modern IMOCA (and especially since all of them have migrated their design to the full closed cockpit model initiated by Alex Thomson).
      The problem here is that nobody was at the front of the deck of the Guyot boat, and in fact there was nobody on the deck on the 11h hour too.
      As a comparison, at Newport during in-port race Abby Ehler WAS ON THE DECK, but when she shout, nobody answered on Malizia boat, because everybody on Malizia was INSIDE... this was exactly the same problem, except that collision has been avoided by luck.
      Little fanatic boy .... I remind you that in the first edition of Ocean Race Europe.... Charlie Enright made a mistake and bumped into a VO65 and did get a little penalty for that, so little boy stop saying "this could be avoidable". No, IMOCA are not designed for "body to body" race style, and such incident may happen more frequently on an IMOCA than on a VO65
      No serious impact at the moment because it was a very slow speed, not comparable with the present situation.
      And yes, I think this was avoidable, we have the same opinion, but fucking guy that requires that every team follow the same process and systematically warn the other to check that the others have well seen the opponent.
      Another simple solution would be to amend the rule of Ocean Race, AND FORCE IMOCA TEAMS to keep at less one sailor PERMANENTLY ON THE DECK during in-port race, and during the starting process.
      We could also imagine the development of some anti collision radar.
      Again and again IMOCA on Ocean Race are only run by 4 people NOT 10, and generally two of them are sleeping but not during the starting process or in an in-port race, this situation is absolutely not comparabe with a VO65 with more crew able to monitor the opponents.

      Yes, I have also thought about that.
      The point here is that firstly 11h hour team THOUGHT Guyot Boat was in "control of situation", so when they warned in fact this was too late for both.
      Such warning should be "systematic" but always having in mind "perhaps he doesn't see me", so team should anticipate the warn in order to give the opponent the time to react, but all team should follow th same process, this could be just a question of "discipline"

      Exactly. I’ve been sailing for 49 years. Cruising and racing. Short and long distance. Ocean and Inland. The explanation Niall’s gave about a “blind spot” is garbage on a fully crewed boat. It was not totally clear from the video, but it appeared to me that while 11th hour had someone on the deck, Guyot had nobody on the bow. That is a complete dereliction of duty on an inshore portion of the course. My god, 11th hour was right in front of them. How could they not see them?
      That’s easy to answer. When you sail inside a plastic bubble where you do not have 360 visibility, that’s why.
      My view has never changed. The IMOCAs are the wrong boats for this race. And that is especially true when the crew of one of them is sailing it like they are all alone in the middle of the ocean.
      Good sportsmanship was certainly present. And Charlie Enright is a role model for all young sailors.
      But there are so many things wrong with what happened, and with the entire race. Too much damage. Too many dismastings. Using freighters to move damaged boats and ship new masts. That’s all crap.
      And now there is likely to be a winner who failed to complete all the legs. The ultimate dishonor in my opinion.
      The skipper of Guyot deserves a multi year suspension.

      @@Pelican5077 yep even if you have no one on the top you know you are racing in a submarine and if you can't see one boat that you are behind, then surely you would make all effort to locate it. They only had 5 boats to look out for. I had a similar accident 4 years ago but in a fleet of 40 yachts and I thought I was leading but there was one boat that took a different tack. My crew's fault as he said we were clear to go around that mark and then they appeared around the Jib out of nowhere. I did blame the other boys a bit because they didn't yell out as they thought I would see them, and dint even try to avoid us.
      Anyway, Niall wasn't malicious, but just lost attention focused on sailing his boat fast on a course that was not tight with only 5 yachts completing. Totally avoidable.

      @@martineyer5336 Thx. When I refrrred to Nials I should have given a more thorough explanation. He’s the guy that hosts the Race Reports. And he was the one making excuses for Guyot, talking about the ‘blind spot’ caused by the deck sweeping jib. What he should have done was point out that they had nobody on the bow, at a point in time on the race course that demanded a bowman. And while that is absolutely the skippers fault, it also points out (in my view) the idiocy of using these boats and sailing short handed.
      It’s one thing to singlehand or even double hand an IMOCA. Everyone involved understands what is happening and if you watch video of some of those race starts they purposefully stay far away from each other. But when you have a crew of four, and you are sailing the boat as if you have a crew of seven or more, bad things are going to happen. And a lot of bad things did happen in this race.
      I’ve sailed over 50,000 miles in my lifetime. My wife and I have lived on our 35 ft sailboat S/V Blessings for more than a decade. She grew up living on a boat.
      We’ve been in some pretty gnarly stuff. But when I see those multi million dollar boats get dismasted in what Great Lakes sailors call “blustery but doable” conditions, the case is closed for me. We’ve been in conditions worse than anything they experienced in this race multiple times with two aging bodies on an aging boat (the boat more gracefully than the crew) and dishes and a wind vane are the only things we’ve ever broken.
      I found the prior two versions of the race in the 65s enthralling, entertaining, and captivating. This version was boring. Was there any leg where all 5 boats finished? I don’t think so.
      I guess in the end for me anyway, sailing is a sport that you do outside, exposed to the elements, with all the risk and reward that brings. Not wrapped up in some little cocoon where you can’t stand up, likely suffer permanent ear damage from the noise and can’t see the other boat when it matters. And all for what. 5 more knots of speed? At best.
      Finally, if you consider the last race there were over 60 sailors competing. This race there were 20. How someone thought that helps grow the sport is beyond me.
      With all that said, Charlie Enright (and his entire team) deserve special recognition for the way they have handled the matter. The race committee needs to take that into consideration.

    Lots to digest...One could question the 11th hour tack to starboard in front of Guyot. Looking at the reply highlights video, the entire collision sequence is given in real time. 11th hour from time of tack initiation to steerage gain and new course was 13 seconds, 3 seconds later 11th hour helm sees Guyot, 2 seconds later 11th Hour tried to head up but it was too late to avoid collision which occurs 2 seconds later. 11h hour from helm over tack to collision was 19 seconds, 13 of which was the actual "head to wind" tack and regaining of steerage. That leaves sailors of both boats less than 7 seconds to see and alter course to avoid collision. My call on this: 11th hour misjudged the speed of Guyot and by tacking, essentially tacked into Guyot creating an unavoidable collision. Violating Sailing Rule 13. The acceleration and closing speed of these boats requires a greater time span for maneuvers. IMOCA's lag in gaining steerage after "head to wind" tack resulted in an untenable situation for Guyot to avoid collision. 11th Hour did not keep clear while tacking, by the time they gained a close hauled course it was too late to avoid collision. Rule 13: After a boat passes head to wind, she shall keep clear of other boats until she is on a close-hauled course. While 11th Hour goes head to wind, steerage gained until close hauled course established, Guyot has right of way. Clearly in the replay there was less than 5 seconds of an 11th Hour close hauled course, not enough time for either boat to avoid collision.

    • @jweitzenheimer
      @jweitzenheimer Рік тому +1

      Wrong take completely. 11th hour tacked late leaving tons of room for Guyot. You can see Holcim had tacked earlier on the course and was on a better layline. If Guyot had any situational awareness (and had eyes on the boat ahead) they would have begun their tack 5 to 10 seconds after 11th Hour and probably beaten them to the mark well clear. Instead Guyot was sailing off into the distance enjoying their coffee and croissants down below. Lose the stopwatch and look at the video

    • @jweitzenheimer
      @jweitzenheimer Рік тому

      Ever see a tacking duel in match racing? There is often less margin for error. Difference is they have crew with eyes on the other boat. The Imocas were barely doing 7 knots upwind leaving Guyot lots of time to evade. This incident is entirely the responsibility of Guyot

    • @evaodland7349
      @evaodland7349 Рік тому

      @@jweitzenheimer Rule 13 still applies. Guyot did not have 5-10 seconds to react once 11th Hour went head to wind. They have the right away until 11th Hour establishes close haul course. 11th Hour should have dipped Guyot then hardened up. If 11th Hour had 15 more seconds of leeway then yes, Guyot would be at fault for a collision. Rule 13 supersedes in this case. Regardless of eyes on 11th Hour or not, clearly there wasn't room (time) to tack with an IMOCA taking at best 15-18 seconds to go head to wind, gain steerage and set course. I put this on the Helm of 11th hour. He should of dipped, prior to establishing close hauled layline course. Guyot would have assumed as much. These boats were not designed for tacking duels or match racing like maneuvers. So I would be hesitant to compare to match racing tactics. I guess we wait and find out the ruling. :/

Been there, hauling ass with a full crew in heavy air and traffic. Safety of the crew and boat is paramount to everything that happens on the course. That collision could have been deadly and was 100% preventable. As such all aspects should be looked at and not from just one viewpoint. 11th Hour's tack was poorly timed, sloppily executed and aggressively managed for an in-port race. From my POV, there is ZERO reason to choose needless RISK over SAFETY (for a few seconds!?). The LAST thing anyone on these boats wants to do is collide in these in-port races, but there it is. Rule 13 - 11th Hour at fault for not keeping clear while tacking. See reply highlights it has the full sequence in real time...clearly it takes 30 seconds to tack these boats at minimum to gain a new close hauled course safely. Had 11th hour kept an eye on Guyot they could of dipped them prior to establishing a close hauled course.

    Sorry to say but i think these inshore circuit races are total bullshit for the offshore boats/ race. The race should be about the offshore racing. Not that close quarters bullshit. I hope evryone gets out without permanent injuries, but forcing the sailors to do this bullshit in harbor races just to get more views and more show is really a downfall in what the volvo ocean race once was. Guys... why?

    An accident waiting to happen the crew are in a bubble. What was the closing speed of the boats? Rule 7 avoid collision even when you have right of way, Charlie tried to do this when it was obviously too late. Both boats are at fault. Now they are paying the price.

    These IMOCAs are just not right. The presenter says that “sails blocking your view” is an issue for every boat with sails, but that’s just not true. With most boats, the entire crew is not working inside a closed off space with hugely degraded vision available; other types will generally have people “up top” that allows them to see where they’re going. These wings also bring other issues into play, like the “boat in front” falling off them and the “boat behind” running into them; Eleventh Hour Racing did that arriving at Cascais a few years ago. Also, those wide wings risk snagging things - like hooking the anchor tine of a small fishing boat as the same Eleventh Hour Racing boat did when leaving Cascais in the dame race. It’s time to rethink these plastic sailing monsters to return to safer, and likely less costly, vessels - with likely more competing boats than you can count on the fingers of just one hand. Even if not, stop racing them around short course legs like this.

      Also - a minimum safety separation zone around each boat would be a good idea.
      Particularly in an Ocean Race - a couple of seconds here or there is not going to affect the result.
      These boats are just not built for close quarters match racing.

    • @ianb4801
      @ianb4801 Рік тому

      @@barryscott6222 I've watched countless starts of the Sydney-Hobart on TV, from home in Australia. With so many boats, they now use a system of multiple start lines (and corresponding first funding markers outside the heads) and the risk of collisions has been reduced immensely. But could you imagine what would happen if you included these stupid IMOCA 60s in the fleet? A buffers zone around each - how??? And there primary crewing happens inside a room with poor windows too. If this is really "The Ocean Race", then make it for real ocean racers like those that can sail in a real fleet. This race is just a farce

    I’m sorry but I don’t feel all warm and fuzzy that “everyone is safe” but I’m glad they are. Guyot have not proven to be at the level of these other crews or boats for most of this race, and now it may have cost 11th Hour the overall win. They’ve failed to complete so much of the race I’m not sure they should have still been racing. Frankly, they look like amateurs and I feel terrible for 11th Hour. Absolutely outrageous.
