- Fifteen minutes after the start of Leg 7 at The Hague, 11th Hour Racing Team were hit by GUYOT environnement - Team Europe. Unfortunately, the leaders of the race have been forced to suspend racing.
They might be hurt but they are not out. The American entry is showing absolute determination to get back out on the water.

So sorry that this happened, but this shows the absolute camaraderie of the sailing community. So glad everyone was safe.
What a bunch of class acts demonstrating the definition of sportsmanship. Absolutely heartbreaking. I realize they were at fault but I feel so bad for Ben and his team - he was obviously devastated that they caused this damage. I hope to see 11th Hour able to complete the race!!!
ben has been devastated several times on this journey. one of the few down sides of onboard cameras.
@@gregknipe8772 No kidding. Guyot has had a rough race!
Thanks, Charlie, and all for your attitude in accepting the situation. I know weather conditions vary…but I think 11th hour should be allowed to race against the clock toward their finish in Genova. Just a thought.
GoGoGooooo Team 11h! You rock and will keep rocking' this! Just amazing how incredible sportsmanship you show - also team Guyot! We're all with y'all!
Wishing well for 11th Hour that they can mend their yacht and that they’ll be able to sail to Genoa, to complete the race as winners. My heart beats for Malizia, but I truely acknowledge the tremendous job 11th Hour performed.
Sad day but lovely sportsmanship!
Such a heart wrenching situation.
Mr. Enright hat viel Glück gehabt, dass er nicht schwer verletzt wurde
So heartbreaking for both teams. Bring the fleet back to make it a race for the last leg!
How so very saddening. It litterally has made me cry. I can only hope that something can be done to put these boats back on a level playing field again.
Wowza. So glad nobody was hurt.
So great sportsmanship from all participants - I can only wish that 11th hour will be able to continue and am glad that no one has been physically injured. Nevertheless, shit happens and I‘m sure that it was not by intention of Guyot. All the best and CARRY ON!
You are right that it was not intentional. It was pure incompetance. Any skipper knows that you must be aware of all boats (or other objects) around you at all times.
All this for just one more meter in a race of 2,200 miles.
Both boats had a man on deck besides the helm, this should not have happend. The slowest boat in the fleet crashes into the fastest causing both to withdraw. How ironic.
accident waiting to happen.
The design of the boats is not suitable for 'match racing'.
No open cockpit crew effectively 'below decks', skipper unable to see the starboard yacht until it appeared from behind the headsail, and crew inside the yacht.
Stupid idea, just good thing no one hurt.
Charlie Enright is a leader. Example over words.
Wow, from GUYOT it was really impossible to see. This was terrifying. Almost 50 cm away from that guy in the cabin.
Yes and Charlie too. At least he saw it coming but happened soooo quickly.
not "impossible" to see. they have been on this boat for months. the helm is in a blind spot, that blind spot did not appear suddenly for this 4th, close quarters inshore race.
Great to see the teams working through the incident like the professionals they are… heartbreaking for both teams.
you obviously didn't read the news stories on website of the organisation. it's in hands of the jury who will go over the possibly redress points
An example of professionalism which should be in future business courses.
Finally we see the Guyot pov to understand why they didn't see 11th Hour. You must have a lookout on leeward side 😔
Man, I feel the devastation from Charly and Benjamin 😢
And the determination of both teams to go back on the water and finish the race 💪🏽
"new concept" post a watch in your direction of travel. maybe even make a new rule. they HAVE cameras. from keel to jib to crows nest.
Not necessarily true - they have cameras above the shrouds and at the mast top
Guyot won't be racing they retired from the race
@@lincolnrowley4250 they only switch to those when needed. Not to navigate
It would be interesting to see the inside camera on Guyot's at the time of the crash...
Lets go 11th hour. During leg 3 Malizia was 700+sm behind and won the leg. Anything is possible.
What a sad drama. Great how the teams deal with it. All the best to everyone involved.
How did the helicopter camera cut away 2 seconds before impact!!
Please show us the last 5 minutes on GUYOT?
Thank God that Charlie’s okay.
"I was a lot like you an hour ago", these guys are all in the same game. Things happen that no-one wants to happen. The same goes for the reactions I saw from team Malizia, no one wants something like this to happen. They want to race for the number one spot.
This is a result of most of the team sailing from INSIDE the boat…..not enough eyes on the heading.
True professionalism with an unfortunate incident.
Good to see Jack on board, good man in fix.
True sportsmen. Very impressive.
Nossa fiquei triste com isso. Da pra ver o sentimento de culpa, não foi por mal
So heartbreaking! This being said, collision is probably the price to pay for the show of offshore 60 ft offshore poorly manœuvrable foiling boats with concealed cockpits sailing inshore!
Obviously a tragic misjudgment but a meter further to port and Charlie Enright could have been seriously injured or worse. I’m almost intests as a spectator so I can only imagine what both teams are feeling
😰 so sorry for both of you. But heads up, you are sailors. 🍀✊️
The Race Committee should allow both teams a restart for the last leg.
So correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not so that Malizia Seaexplorer will be the only boat arriving in Genua on their own 2 feet (AKA NOT using cargo ships, leaving out legs etc.) and they will NOT win the Ocean Race due to some odd regulations? Even if 11th Hour are able to continue tomorrow or whenever and arrive in Italy as well some day, they will be as the second boat on two feet as of now at least 5 days behind Malizia (Malizia ~ 85 days race time, 11th Hour ~88 days after leg 6). Is this a fair contest?
hahaha. good point, but the rules are different.
Odd? At least this was clear from the very beginning of this race (and ANY previous editions btw).
@@19frankblack78 True that, rules are rules, can't change them in an ongoing competition. Nonetheless it's some food for thought for upcoming events...
This is so sad .
The hull rebuilding expert apparently not on the seen, at time of filming.
Even the worst case scenario though, can have 11th Hour adjudged as 4th on this leg, and that's... OK... sorta...
Really feeling for the team though - sad.
Hells bells!
So sad.
Hard to believe that the race committee did not call all the others back immediately, and postpone the start till both boats were ready to race. IMHO.
Totally agree, the race should have been suspended. They were on the first of a couple bloody exhibition laps. That wasn’t the real leg in my opinion. Nobody should want to gain position based on this accident.
So true!
They might grant 11th Hour some points regardless. The other boats have nothing to do with the incident.
NO.
Is that what they do in motorsports such as F1? It’s part of sailing and racing.
I don't agree, all the 65s got away without problems they had crew on deck watching for port Stb'd situations to reduce the chance of a collision. These Imoca boats have the crew below deck out of the elements. Charlie was alone on deck, occupied with steering the boat, it was too late to avoid the collision. he had right of way but was still obliged to avoid the collision. Normally with crew on deck a tactician would give an order to avoid a collision, the boat would tack away then make a protest. (He who bears away lives to fight another day.)
Remember these boats are traveling at 20 knots plus this is a closing speed of 40knots. Having the crew in a dry bubble has proved it has it's negatives. I hope this will be a lesson for the future.
Two boats at fault, two boats out of the race.
Rule 7 Every vessel shall use all available means appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions to determine if risk of collision exists. If there is any doubt such risk shall be deemed to exist.
11th hour had a guy on the bow. Only the French team didn’t.
This is such a shame. It's time to eliminate the in-port races from this competition. It was kind of silly when it was happening in fully crewed V070s and V060s but doing the in-port racing with four crew on IMOCA 60s is just dumb. Even setting aside this accident, buoy racing should not be the tiebreaker for an ocean racing event. If we want to have racing in each stopover city maybe some sort of single day coastal race could be held. Or the teams could do some exhibition racing with sponsors but not for points. Hoping for change going forward. For now heartbreaking for both 11th Hour and Guyot. This has otherwise been a very exciting and well-run edition of the race. Switching to IMOCA 60s was a wonderful choice.
@@miaspace763 But the conditions were like in an In-Port-Race. That's the crucial thing.
@@miaspace763 You should review this a bit. It was two laps, of in-port racing, then they leave through the start line for the rest of the leg. The racing Committee should have addressed this ASAP as they were following each boat in their orange power boats. If they were not there to judge, then what the F were they doing!!!
" It's time to eliminate the in-port races from this competition.... buoy racing should not be the tiebreaker for an ocean racing event "
Absolutely correct - 100%
Who is this race for ???
The racing committee - or the sailors ?
Everything should be about supporting - the yacht race - not the marketing campaign
Why no video footage from Guyot during the collision?
Oops ... didn't watch enough of this video.
That is THE problem of the Internet. Getting half of the information and understanding a quarter of it.
@@CooCaa-ru7mp Too true. Expect additional footage will show what the other GUYOT crew members were doing and why no lookout on the blind side. And what about the collision warning system(s)? Is it turned off during the start and activated once at sea? Reminds me of Boris's collision with a fishing boat at the end of the 2020/21 Vendee Globe, and I think he was on course to finish ahead of the pack.
Amazing team... 11th hour all the way to the Finish... Guilaum the man straight off to apologise..
If Malizia comes first to Genoa; are they overall winners?
No. If Malizia comes in first to Genoa, they will have 27 + 5 = 32 Points. 11th Hour Racing Team has already 33 points even if they retire from the leg. Depending on the result of Holcim (actually 31 points), they can become 2nd, but this is very unlikely and only possible if Holcim retires or gets penalised due to some (at the moment) not existing reasons.
He didn't have switched on collision avoidance system....How did Guyot avoid colliding with commercial shipping in past 6 months - is pure luck.....
This isn't unlucky accident ( like being hit by lighting, or a whale ), but ERROR , MISTAKE and IRRESPONSIBLE NEGLIGENCE ( so easily avoidable )....not only from Guyot skipper but the whole crew.....totally unprofessional sailing......
Little bit more thinking ahead , would save a lot of apologizing latter.....
OMGOSH 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
First, Guyot shouldn't be sailing world class ocean racing yachts - or racing lasers. There were only 4 other boats in the fleet - zero excuse for not looking to leeward. ZERO. Second, to 11th hr... there is a major rule of right-of-way on the water - TONNAGE. You may have right-of-way, but the other guy(ot) may be big, fast and not paying attention. When you are leading a regatta and only need to beat two other boats to win (who haven't even been competitive to date). Stay the hell away from other boats. Good sportsmanship, very bad basic racing on both teams...
How was no one looking to leeward? Hacks. Just hacks.
Oh, I am so sick and tired of all these armchair-skippers in their sweet warm homes demanding this and demanding that. Babbling about restarts, poor leadership of the committee, poor sportsmanship of the boats not involved in the incident, poor sailing abilities of Guyot, while obviously never sailed themselfes in their whole life. If you can't take anything away from the video above except that, I feel sorry for you.
To the both teams involved I wish only the best for you guys. This is the ultimate test of mind and sportsmanship. Stay strong. Give everything.
True words. Naive dreamers.
Welcome to the world of Trumpism. The US has lost their sense of reality, among others.
“How dare fans criticize anything, you haven’t ever done it yourself!” What stupid logic.
Guyot has been a liability since Capetown, and now they might have ruined the entire race for 11th Hour. It pisses me off. But I’m just some guy who’s supported Charlie and SiFi for over a decade, clearly I can’t have an opinion.
I agree and disagree. The reason for the crash has to be sorted out. A team has to analyse why there was nobody checking the competition. They knew that 11th Hour was somewhere there. They were above the lay line (above Holcim) so they could expect 11th Hour crossing. Sure, it’s a lot for only four on bord. Perhaps it’s better not to sail this format in IMOCAs at all. These questions are allowed and have nothing to do with armchair sailing but with interest in this sport to go on and to improve.
I agree on the spirit of sportsmanship in particular from Charlie Enright’s side and the whole team of 11th Hour Racing for being so humble to acknowledge that errors happen and that apologies are accepted. I sincerely hope they find a way to finish this. But fair enough - if Holcim wins this leg they deserve an overall win as well even if their closest competitor cannot fight for the points they need for the win anymore.
@@scottmeredith3359I am following this team from the start. Heck, even long before they called themselfes 11th Hour Racing. I met Charlie once in Le Havre. Really nice guys and I cheer for them (and all the other teams as well). But even a fan (or especially a fan?) should sometimes take a few slices of composure from his idols, don't you think so?
Emergency repair and go.....
From the tack to the crash, how many time? 20 seconds? An half million dollars mistake
Commentators praise the comradeship. I more see that it‘s not just a fault of Dutreux. It is a big no-go mistake. This should never have happened. It rarely happens to amateurs. What a bad job from team Guyot, the helmsman and the skipper. I feel sad for 11th hour racing. Guyot should be terminated from the race immediately.
Wow I just don’t understand what the watch on the deck was doing. Anyway what a shit show for 11hour racing. It’s a horrible feeling when suddenly a yacht appears seemingly out of nowhere. Guyot should have had more awareness if you only see one boat in front of you and you know you are running third I would be yelling at the crew to spot the second boat. It can’t just disappear in thin air, but at the end it’s racing and shit happens.
mmmmmmmm. I know what's wrong with it. mmmmmmmm. Ain't got no gas in it.
amateurs Smh
🤭😩
So the boat that hasn’t been good enough to participate in most of the race takes out the boat in it to win it. Starting to wonder what Guyot is doing in this race at all.
Hey you heroes from 11th hour and Guyot, now show us how to overcome a miserable situation like yours ! above all its only material loss !! we "normal people" also have to deal with bad issues on land !
Five boats and they collide😂😂
enough with this sort of crash, what's new ?
I was hoping to see the other boats suspend racing until 11th Hour can get racing again and finish this racer the proper way, on the water. Also it looks like Charlies right hand is hurt. I am guessing he has some broken bones. So sorry to see it end this way. It looks like a weeks worth of work. Maybe the other teams hang out in Gibraltar for a week.
Benamin, you needs to be heavy penalized.. A captain always needs to know whAT IS GOING AROUND HIM. sHAME ON YOU!!!
do they still keel haul idiot skippers?
perhaps a watch at the bow would aid in the well known, obvious 75% blind spot of the helm.
These boats are so dumb. Negative visibility.
The irony is team europe should not be there a round the world race , they didnt finish 1 leg , and didnt start another , why were they there . .?
Intentional ramming, right there.
Unintentional non - thinking?
The French team took out the American team. It was on purpose! The boom nearly killed Charlie.
There are more french crew members on Guyot than US-Americans on 11th Hour, true. Nevertheless, I don't know what nationality has to do with this bs of yours.
They couldn't beat the FIRST PLACE Americans in the race, so, the European last place team took out 11th hour so they would not win overall title and a European team would... TRAVESTY!!!
Why so full of hate! Just be happy and enjoy the beautiful effort of these special people. They love what they do and we should respect it. You are just bringing ugliness to this love of sea sport.
That is such a bad take holy...
In the context of international politics I thought like you. A team with problems from the start of the race. I hope there are no hidden interests behind such a beautiful event...
I think it's pretty clear how devastated the Guyot team (especially Ben) were - this was clearly just an awful mistake.
Short mindness.
I don't know how Guyot team could do this... Guyot is the #5 and 11th #1. Bad decisions... Sad for 11th 😔💔 Hope they can find a way to come back to the race. 🫶🇧🇷 #go11th
guyot with bad lookout too.....however. safety first
safety first, enright screwed up....bad judgement..... should of bore away and complained after....now no boat to race.
facts speak for themselves.
i think you are wrong to blame charlie enright in this situation, he tried to evade as soon as he noticed that they were not seen.
The committee will not fault Enright.
@@sebastiantraxler5550 exactly, also these imocas arent really maneuverable.
Going down below them would not have worked. They would’ve sped up as they bore away. Power in sails would have made it very hard without easing the sail adjustment - which would have taken to long, plus would have powered them up and increased impact speed Going up was his only option.
Pretty bad take...
