  • Niall Myant-Best talks to eight-time The Ocean Race competitor Bouwe Bekking about the process of Redress, as 11th Hour Racing Team ask for compensation to their score after the crash. Team Holcim-PRB currently retain their lead as the boats continue to circle Spain. In the VO65 Sprint, Viva México make good progress, but WindWhisper Racing Team still hold an impressive lead.

It is awesome to see Bouwe again in any TOR vid.
I think Niall swallowed a syllable in “Balearic”. I spent the summer of 2014 on Menorca on an archaeological dig and it was a beautiful place. (If I’d known about the Ocean Race at the time I would have tried to get to Alicante, but unfortunately I wasn’t aware of it at all!)

Rules question: How is the overall rank determined for the in port racing series in case there is a tie in points at the finish?

    • @jweitzenheimer
      @jweitzenheimer Рік тому

5 points for 1st place and so on down to 1 point for last place in each in-port race there being 5 boats in the race. Holcim can't catch 11th Hours in-port total so in case of tie, 11th Hour wins

@@jweitzenheimer Sorry, but does not really answer my question. I try to clarify: I presume there also is a trophy for overall in-port series winner; and here there potentially could be a tie between 11 hour and Malizia. Who would take the 1st place in this competition then?

I will say that 11th Hour must be granted the time it took them to repair the boat. Time from the incident and till they left the harbour on the frinal leg.

When the consequences of redressal in terms of points awarded to 11th Hour can have a huge impact on the overall result, it is unlikely that the jury will do anything radical - at least in terms of deciding the winner. Whatever may have been the circumstances. In some ways, it is a situation similar to the final race of the F1 GP 2021. 11th Hour may feel hard done by, just like Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes did, but sometimes that is the way the cookie crumbles.

There’s no evidence that outside influence (I.e. from another boat or from race organiser mistakes) caused the rig failure. In the case of 11HRT the damage was obviously due to the mistake of GETE.

Because little fanatic boy THIS WOULD BE UNFAIR !!!
If Guyot crashed into 11 th hour, tell me little fanatic boy why Holcim would get some sort of penalty by granting free points to his direct competitor ?
In a formula 1 race, Moto GP, rally...if a concurrent pushes out another so modifying potentially the final podium, THERE IS NO REDRESS AT ALL, AND NOBODY ASK FOR THAT BECAUSE THIS WOULD OPEN A PANDORA BOX... we usually consider that as "the vagary" of any kind of race !!!!
"REDRESS" is likely to be more specific to offshore sailing, so don't be wrong "redress" is not a common process in sport
At this moment it is hard to say what kind of decision is likely to be taken. But reading some informations based on previous decisions, "11 th hour" could have some chance to receive a number of point of compensation based on the average of the points received on previous leg. Having never finished worst than third, they could easily get 3 points.... without racing.
THIS MEANS 11th hour would win the Ocean Race "on a green carpet" (as we say in french) meaning that a team wins without battle, based on a simple decision (fair or unfair) of the referee.
BUT fundamentally, this IS UNFAIR for Holcim. Incident occured at the very begining of the leg 7 AND NOBODY KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. In particular, on an IMOCA IT IS VERY EASY TO MAKE A MISTAKE AND BREAK THE MAST, tear or loose a sail following a bad manoeuver, as Holcim and Guyot did on previous legs.
Holcim pushed hard in leg 5 to fight against 11 th hour, at a moment, they pushed too hard and made a fatal mistake and broke the mast. So the same thing could have happened to "11th hour" on leg 7. At the arrival of leg 6, "11 th hour" team recognized they were "on the edge". The battle between "11hour" and Holcim had been fierce, THIS MEANS BOTH CREW PUSHED THEIR BOATS SOMETIMES CLOSE TO THEIR LIMIT and in such condition... you can EASILY break anything. IMOCA are incredibly nervous machines, any mistake at the worst moment can have big consequences, bigger than on a VO65
I am tired of the "11 hour" (and also 'Maliza" ) fanatic boys. Holcim and all the other teams WHO ARE NOT INVOLVED IN ANYWAY IN THIS INCIDENT HAVE THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEIR POINT OF VIEW !!!
We speak about sport, sport must be as much possible "fair", please please STOP with this fucking nationalism...
From my point of view the best solution would be to simply reset the chronometer at the new restart of "11th hour" AND THEN SIMPLY compare the time to arrival at Genova for each boat. If Holcim wins leg 7 on "honour line", 11th hour would have simply to make the third best time. If so, this is equality, so "tie break" and concurrents are classified according to "in-port races ranking". Even if Holcim wins the very last in-port race at Genova, in fact they can't catch up 11 th hour on the general ranking of the in-port races, having failed too much.
Deciding to take a decison based on a "time trial" following the restart of 11 hour would not be "completely fair" because the result of an offshore race is also based intrinsicly on the different weather systems synchronization.
For exemple VO65 Wind Whisper seems to have taken a very very good option when arrived into atlantic by choosing a very western option. No other VO65 tried this option and this seems to be a very big mistake.
For IMOCA, the question is very different. Firstly the route was slightly different, but in fact they also started 6 hours later. So this means that in any case, even if IMOCA had followed exactly the same route, the IMOCA fleet wouldn't have been able to catch the weather system that Wind Whisper caught simply because 6 hours later, this weather system had disappeared, moved.... changed, opportunity simply vanished.
SO : nobody can say for sure if a boat launched later in a race get an advantage or a penalty. Sometimes starting later can make you take advantage of weather systems that did not exist when first concurrents started and that creates a "fleet compression" (on leg 4, we saw the great advance of Holcim reducing dramatically due to more favorable weather systems behind Holcim), but the contrary can also be true, and this seems to be the case for Wind whisper. Having some weather systems in advance, they seem to take advantage of better weather systems that are in front of them (and not behind them) and in such case, we see a gap rather "expanding" than "compressing".
BUT, from my point of view, this is the less "unfair solution".
Let's wait what will happen on june 29th....but please, don't forget this is a sport, and sport is a question of fairplay, Holcim, Biotherm, Malizia HAVE PERFECTLY THE RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEIR CONCERNS TO THE JURY, THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS INCIDENT !!!! YOUR MESSAGE IS UNACCEPTABLE, THIS IS A LACK OF RESPECT TO THE SPORT !!!

11th hour can get their participation trophy, and maybe even join the last shore sprint, but if the compensation has any effect on the final scoring and thus positioning of the boats who actually finished the race in respectful manner, this race show becomes pure NATO propaganda. Scoring points via technicality doesn't make you a winner. It makes you the worst loser.

I guess you really don't understand the rules of sailboat racing.
I suggest you look them up.
Any normal reading would recommend 11th Hour be given a redress of their average score for all the legs they competed and that would be 3 points for the leg they were knocked out of Alternatively you could score 11th hour with the place they occupied at the time they were knocked out, which I believe was 2nd place in the leg.
