- New clipdown fishing rig that works brilliantly everytime and is very cheap and could catch more fish.
Since I started using the "off-ground casting method" I struggled to find a clipdown terminal tackle clip that I liked and so I came up with a new clipdown method.
In this video I briefly show the Braekaway Imp, Splash-down lead weight, Gemini bait clip and the Trident Roto clip and explain what I like and dislike about each of them.
It's important to make the most out of each fishing session and having a reliable hook clip that releases the hook everytime when in the water and NOT releasing on the cast allows for piece of mind. It can be so annoying having left a bait out for half an hour only to find it didn't release and was still clipped in. Reliability is key to any fishing session whether it be shore fishing or fresh water fishing.
Beach fishing to me is my passion and I mostly fish on Chesil Beach. Chesil Beach is a great place to fish with many varieties of fish to be caught there however, it is a fact that most fish are caught at distance, sure there are days when the big fish are in very close but on the whole (most of the time) the fish are at distance and so requires distance casting.
Having a streamlined rig with a reliable clipdown is very advisable in order to help with distance casting. I have tried the Gemini Splashdown clip which works most of the time but I have had them come back unclipped. The Trident Roto clip is one that I haven't tried but as explained in the video, I'm not keen on the amount of plastic used in these clips and besides my method of using PVA water disovable material as a hook clip works really well and YES it does work in sea water.
By using a hook directly fixed to the lead weight enables it to be used to secure the bait hook to the lead weight with a small piece of PVA netting. After just a few seconds in the water the PVA disvolves and releases the bait hook, this never fails. Also it is suprising how well the PVA netting together with barbed hooks stays put during an off-the-ground-cast allowing you to concentrate on the distance casting itself.
The Splash Down lead weight and the Breakaway Imp work really well for Pendulum Casting or Overhead Thump Casting but my preference between these is the Breakaway Imps because they are cheap and have alot less plastic in them compared to the Splasdown lead weight however since using the PVA clip down rig this tends to be my overall favourite.
Sea fishing is an enjoyable sport and so the less hassle we have the better and I'm all for hassle free sea fishing, focus on the fishing and not fumbling around. Beach fishing in particular can be hard at times especially when it is very cold and during dark nights so why wouldn't you want less hassle?
Having an extra fixed hook on the lead weight can also be used with a small strip of bait and don't be suprised to catch a fish on it. I once caight a small Ray on this hook and also a couple of Dogfish, bonus!
As this new clipdown rig is simple and very cheap to make it is well worth a try and after just a few times of trying it I'm sure you too will like it.
In the video I mention that if you have an alternative idea other than using a fishing hook on the weight to let me know, I would be most interested. I have tried using the various rig clips by sharpening a point at one end so that the PVA will pierce through the PVA netting but it isn't as secure as using a fishing hook due to the fishing hook barb, as you can imagine it holds the PVA bait netting to the hook very well and prevents it from sliding off.
Give the new clipdown fishing rig a try, I'm sure you'll like it.

What a great idea you are looking well great to see you back stay safe tight lines till the next one
Hi Liz, thank you for your support in watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. Yes I am getting better by the day. Best wishes to you!
Like the idea ,did you test it in salt water or fresh water ? In carp fishing we mix salt in with
the bait to stop bait desolving the pva
I tend to double up on the PVA mesh as I cast harder now. I use it in salt water.
As above...we put salt in freshwater to stop wet baits from melting the pva... how do you get on with it in saltwater...does it devolve...?...thanks for the vid
The IMP can be used captive and will work for your off the ground casting technique retaining the hook even if the line ends up loose. Just put the hook behind instead of in front. 😉
I would much rather do that than trust the PVA.
Thanks for the tip, i'll try that.
Unbelievable. I can't believe I've never thought of that!
Thanks for the tip. Re. Hook tied to the lead weight. Isnt it better to give it 6inches of strong mono up from the lead. And that way it willbdrop slightly away from the weight aftervthe pva dissolves. You've then got a proper two hook rig fishing.
Hi, I tend not to put the bottom hook on anymore, instead I pass the PVA through the loop of the the lead and tie it, then hook the main hook into it. It's a lot less hassle. Your idea is a great idea, you've basically created a one up one down rig which is a great rig. Thanks for your input, most interesting.
Do you understand the forces on that hook when casting a pulley rig?
May aswel use a tea bag to clip it down in all honesty
Great tips Rob, very useful.
Thank you for your support in watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
Rob keep em coming not really convinced about this one mate SORRY P.S. when bait is on the hook wants the juices dissolve the PVA Stringer before casting ?
Hi John, please don't apologise, I appreciate your honesty and views however, I wish now that I had done a power casting video to show how well this works, maybe a part 2 video? As I said in the video the other types of PVA are not good as they rip easy but the mesh is very strong. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, it means alot to me, thank you!
Trident roto for me every time its cheap compact and dose exactly what it says on the tin so what's not to like. If you are worried about the amount of plastic that in it id say the amount of lead that's in your weight is going to be more a worry and most of us sea anglers use lead weights. Sorry for the negative comment as you have some good ideas in your other videos.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I know a few fisherman that like the Roto's but have had the occasional one come back unclipped but then again most things fail from time to time, they're just not for me. Lead in the sea doesn't harm the sea.
Yes Rob like Sandman I would be concerned about the weight hook snagging, but I’m sure
you will come up with something to get around this, keep the videos coming, even if I don’t
agree with something I’m still enjoying them as gives something to think about
Hi Ronnie, that's what it's all about, encouraging a bit of out-of-box thinking so I'm glad your enjoying seeing some ideas. I fish mainly clean sandy beaches (Chesil) so the snagging from the lead hook isn't a problem and in fact I've caught fish on the lead hook when attaching a bit of squid. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
It's always nice to see people taking the time to share their little tips & tricks with other people. Many thanks... However, I must say I'm not convinced at all in regards to the PVA on the hook. Once baited up the juices from the bait are simply going to melt it away. The hook attached directly to the lead in my opinion is asking for trouble especially in heavy rocky/kelp areas. And the last one for me has got to be the amount of plastic that has been used in the Trident Roto. Point taken, but correct me if I'm wrong here but hasn't the Gemini Splash Down Solo got just about the same amount of plastic incorporated in it? or have I got it wrong?...Tight Lines
I only fish smooth ground so the hook on the lead doesn't snag but instead has caught me a couple of fish on it when tipped with squid, nothing special mind. I tried using regular clips and sharpened a point on them but you need the barb to secure the PVA, I did consider manufacturing some clips but I'm overloaded with new product development work at the moment. You have to apply the PVA just before the cast otherwise the juice from the bait would affect the PVA if left for more than a 10 seconds or so, again I had come up with another way of using the PVA but other products design is in full swing so couldn't commit to this idea. I wish now that I had explained this a little better or even shown me casting with the PVA, maybe a part 2? I would agree that the Gemini and the Roto have about the same amount of plastic. I tried the Gemini splash down a couple of times when they first came out but wasn't that keen on them as they had failed to release on occasions and because of the amount of plastic, that niggled me. I just wanted to show in this video my thought process with the PVA and what has worked for me no matter how controversial the idea might be but, there are better ways of using the PVA if given more thought.
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment with your opinions. Thank you.
Long before the modern lead release devices were available we used to tie our hooks to the line with PVA tape to stop the bait trailing in the air. Then we fixed bent wire {stainless steel) fixed to the trace with telephone wire. they worked fine. I find impact shields work but fiddly to get a big bait onto. Your system looks great, but I fish my baits way off the lead so would need to fix the hooks to the trace. Any ideas?
Alright mate I can see what your trying to do but I dont think the pva mesh will hold the power from a cast . I will probably say it will just snap from the compression. I've used the Pva mesh for my carp fishing and I know how soft it is mate. Keep them ideas coming mate
It is surprising how strong the mesh I use is. I wish now I had done a power casting video to show how well it holds up, maybe a part 2 video showing this would help. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
Very clever buddy, well done 🙂👍👌
I tend to use an uncut piece now if or when I use this method, it's a stronger which helps for more powerful casts. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment.
Do you think that will hold the hook when casting?
Very informative & I googled PVA, yep it's environmentally friendly. Doh, should of realised from school glue, ooops. Uhmm, only potential problem is just the weight cracking of with a hook on it. Other beach goers come to mind including dogs. Can you invent a blunt hook now.
Hope above is useful
Hi Kevser, unfortunately cracking-off is something that happens occasionally no matter how well we try for this NOT to happen, lines snap etc. The mesh I use is surprisingly very strong but yes it is true that it has failed a couple of times but I put it down to me not fixing it properly to start with. I wish now that I had done a casting video using the mesh but I've only just started to learn to cope with the outside world again since I've been lockdown for 14 months. Maybe a part 2? I really appreciate your support in taking the time to watch and comment. Thank you so much. Best wishes!
@@1RodRob big hugs back xxx
Hi, maybe a small minor improvement on your bottom hook would be to use small rotten bottom weak link clips that would still serve the same purpose but the baited hook would be tighter to the weight, better for casting .For the clip see Sandmans Tackle on youtube, They are easy to make but can also be purchased. However your idea is brilliant and 100% effective
Hi, I tried using links but it didn't work as they link can pull through the PVA. I tried to cut a barb in the links to help but this was difficult to do and still didn't work as well. Good suggestions though.
Innovative as always Rob.
Thank you for your support Valerie, appreciated.
Grat video mate nice idea keep up the good work and stay safe
Glad you liked it. Thank you for your support.
I like those imps they are very good can you do a casting video with the pva bags on those hooks. Would be interesting to see as I expect you can double it up for extra strength.
Hi Vern, I wish now that I had shown how well the PVA mesh hold up on a power cast, maybe a part 2? As I said the video all other PVA materials were NOT suitable as they rip easy. Thank you for your support, I really appreciate it.
@@1RodRob Find a field Rob and show them. All best with your next video looking forward to it.
Latecomer to your channel, but have subbed. Found your channel as somebody else is using your 'Landlocked' name on one of the fishing forums, but he isn't you! Also, it appears that I'd watched a few of your videos before - always leave a like and usually comment! Like the idea for your clipped down rig - 2 points, I have been lead to believe that PVA doesn't dissolve as well in salt water, and I would be concerned about the strength of your snood taking part of the strain of casting. Stay safe & well. 👍👍
The PVA "does" dissolve in saltwater and it is surprisingly strong on the cast although I used it doubled over and not cut as shown in the video. I don't tend to use this method anymore as it did get a bit tricky to use on a windy beach with wet hands. Glad you enjoyed watching my videos and thank you for your support.
breakaway impact lead and gemini splashdown clip rob.
btw, plastic beads and a pulley bead, tut tut just use beads and a swivel, less plastic still.
Like the thinking behind your pva clip, but hooks aren't cheap.
It's a toss-up of working well as opposed to the amount of plastic hence why I said minimalistic. In other words, reduced plastic where possible but must still work well so using some plastic parts is necessary after all the fishing line is plastic, not much we can do about that. The hook on the lead doesn't need to be a new hook, you can use an old hook for this as long as the barb is still ok but, I have tipped this hook with a tiny piece of Squid in the past and caught on it which amazed me. The idea of my videos is to entice thought processes, I dangle the bait or spark an idea for others. You're an ideas person Martin and over the years I've seen you come up with some great ideas such as rigs and more recently your phone protector box, brilliant stuff. Thank you for taking the time watch and comment.
My concern would be the lead hook catching every piece of line/snags on the bottom. Also, have you tried the PVA mesh in salt water. I know some of the Carp baits have large amounts of salt in to make them PVA friendly??
Rather than using the dart stem rings couldn't you use a small split ring? Like the type on a treble hook to a lure? Cheap and in tackle shops
You can use whatever you want, I just provide the raw idea. Thank you for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it.
Great idea!
Needs further work on. Thanks for your comment.
Rather than use a hook on the lead you could amber a small nail into the side of the lead at an angle and use that as a clip either with the plastic or not. This keeps the bait very near to the lead also.
Except it needs a barb to work. I've tried various links and other things but the barb of a hook is crucial for it to work.
Thanks for that. Tight lines to you and thanks for sharing. 😜
@@anthonywilson8998 no worries, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Much appreciated.
Love your vid mate but I’m not too sure how effective it would be against the force of the weight ripping the pva in the cast??- hopefully a follow up on the beach when the restrictions are lifted mate.
I wish now that I had done a power casting video using the PVA but yes, maybe a part 2 video to show this. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Is this an a different way of doing a rotten bottom?
No it's different way of having a clipped down rig, especially good for off-ground casting.
WOW brilliant. Need to use this. Thumbs up from a fellow creator 😅
Glad you found my PVA idea interesting. Thank you for watching and commenting.
So pva polluting sea with microscopic particles as dissolves?
PVA is non-toxic.
Carp specific pva mesh doesn’t dissolve in saltwater which is why carp fisherman sometimes add salt to their “wet” baits. Secondly the force of casting will rip through that mesh faster than your scissors. Bounce your rig up and down while fixed to that bottom hook and you will see. And mostly, that bottom hook on the sinker is gonna snag on sorts of things on the sea bed, especially when you are reeling out. Just get a Roto or and Imp or even something as simple as a Gemini rig clip. Cheaper than the pva mesh to be honest. Great effort for ingenuity and out of the box thinking but it simply won’t work bud.. 😉👍🏽
Edits: Lastly, not “mostly”
Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. The PVA does in fact dissolve in saltwater, I made a video about it but lost the footage so will need to do it again. The only difference is that it takes longer to dissolve than it does in freshwater. Correct, you cannot power cast with the way I have shown in this video however, I use it differently now by tieing a complete tube through the eye of the lead, no need for the extra hook, this also allows for a stronger off ground cast but still not a power cast. I use imps for lots of other rigs but they are not suitable for off ground casting and I am not keen on the other options. I intend to do a follow on video about this in the near future. Thanks again.
Hi, have you actually tried this with bait? Because any fluid from bait will dissolve the pva as will any wetness on your hands???
Hi Paul, yes I used it loads of times and it works well. Adding the PVA netting is put on just before the cast just like setting the hook in an imp. The juices don't have time to dissolve the PVA. The netting is surprisingly strong but takes a good 20 seconds to dissolve when in sea water. Handling the PVA with dry hands is necessary. I hope to do a follow-up video on this PVA clipdown method whilst I'm on the beach fishing asap.
@@1RodRob Hi thanks for the reply, did you know that you can also get pva cable ties, used a lot of these in my carp fishing👍
@@paulriches2507 No I didn't, i'll check them out now, thanks for the tip.
Try castaway pva
Must admit, as others have said, don't think this is a very safe method; would be ok for lobbing short distance !
Hi Kevin, I wish now that I had done a power casting video to show how well this works, maybe a part 2 video? As I said in the video the other types of PVA are not good as they rip easy but the mesh is very strong. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, it means alot to me, thank you!
If you go out only equipt with this and it starts raining hard what then
It takes around 1-2 minutes to dissolve properly however, using in the rain is very tricky and not advisable. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated.
Run a. Swivel off the spring lead to hook with 18 f1
I think it works better without the swivel as it stops the PVA from twisting up. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
Surely any juice from the bait will start breaking the pva down? Therefore weakening the pva and deeming it unsafe to take the power of the cast! Also is the hook attached to the lead not just like a grappling hook on the retrieve picking up old line? To be honest I can see more cons than pros to you I idea sorry
Hi Michael, don't be sorry mate, everyone is entitled to their opinion. The pulley rig lifts the weight up off the ground on the retrieve and I only use this rig on clean ground. Yes the wet juices will affect the PVA so it needs to be added just before the cast however, the PVA ribbon mesh is very strong and seems to hold very well on a power cast and I wish now that I had shown a cast using it or at least explained a bit more about how to use it. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, appreciate it.
Or just use a canny link upside down instead of the hook. The hook on the lead is a problem area for snagging.
I tried them but they just pull through the PVA, it needs the barb to hold it secure. Good suggestion though. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@1RodRob yeah you don't need to hook it to pva it will fall off the canny link when it hits the floor, i can't see the pva taking the stretch of a power cast 🤷♂️
@@VisionAngling The point is you don't want it to fall off as it is for off-the-ground-casting otherwise you might as well use an Imp. The ribbon PVA is surprisingly strong but I wish now I had waited until I can get out fishing to demo this, a follow up video is needed. I appreciate you taking the time to think about this and offer suggestions, that's what my videos and ideas are all about "to make people think and develop ideas", great stuff!
😉👍
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for comment and sub on my channel, can’t seem to reply. Garry
No problem, enjoy your videos.
Juices from mackerel, ragworm, lugworm, squid, etc will dissolve the PVA and cause the cast to fail.
It doesn't have time to dissolve as I put it on just before the cast, in any case I've ditched this idea now as it is difficult to use on a windy beach with wet hands.
Just an extra hook to get snagged on something
Good point but I only fish shingle/sandy beaches on Chesil and I've actually caught fish on that hook using a tiny piece of Squid. I don't use this idea anymore as the windy beach and wet hands made it difficult to use.
