I got a letter in the mail a few weeks ago about the CP4 pump being the issue in a class action lawsuit for 2011-2016 6.6 LML apparently it is fragile and susceptible to catastrophic failure and that metal shavings get into the fuel injectors.
Hopefully something comes of it , When the cp4 fails its very expensive for the customer. Im not sure on the specific cause of failure on the cp4 failure , I have a feeling its a combination of poor fuel quality and poor design. The best thing to save the fuel injectors and rails when it grenades is install a exergy fuel metering valve. When the pump fails it will save thousands of dollars. When it fails install a cp3 and no more issues.
the cause is the diesel the government requires us to use has less lubricity that the old/european diesel. The cp4 was designed for Europe who uses different diesel. And any contamination or air and water can more quickly throw off the roller in the cp4 to cause more rubbing instead of rolling. Unfortunately failure rate is upwards of 7% . So you probably either know a lot of failures or non at all. Probably varies more state to state due to different fuel regulations.
I’m pretty mechanically inclined but I think you have made my mind up that I’ll pay someone to do my cp3 conversion. What’s labor run on swapping these pumps ? Thanks for the video I watched you install a exergy and that was very helpful installing mine
Mitchell pro demand now calls for 9.9 hours to replace the cp4. Last month it actually called for 15 hours. If you plan on keeping the truck installing a cp3 is a great idea. I always suggest a good lift pump/ filter system like fass or airdog ( it’s not required).
@@drewsshoplifeGuy needed Injectors, CP4 and railes on his LML. Shop tried to bill him 40 hours and run $12,000 on labor. So me and my dad my mentor of 26 years of engine building experience decided we would do it for $2,000 he just had to get the parts. We knocked got all injectors and CP4 out in roughly 9-10 hours. Granted this was our first LML Duramax we have messed with and I can say I won’t own one. I’ll stick to my LB7 and maybe an LLY or LBZ. LML is powerful and for the most part a decent post emissions truck however those CP4 pumps are ticking time bombs and they are time consuming the access
No , You rotate the injection pump until its close but the issue is the gear is not straight cut so it goes in off and once the pump is tightened the marks will line up. You could move the crankshaft but that would be more difficult to line the marks up. The marks must line up when the pump is tightened down.
Yes this truck had an exergy fuel metering valve (fuel system saver) installed a few months before failure so it actually saved the entire high side of the fuel system besides the pump obviously. Just had to replace the pump, flush the suction and return lines, clean the fuel tank, and replace the fuel filter and it’s back on the road.
@@drewsshoplife cool! If no metal it should be safe to clean the low side and send it. But I’m assuming most of the time when the pump goes it gets into the high pressure side?
Not really , the most recent one I did a cp3 conversion on has 118k on it and was a 15 or 16. The last couple trucks I’ve had them fail was just under and over 200k. If you’re concerned I would at a minimum watch my video on the exergy metering valve install.
@drewsshoplife i am very concerned im waiting for my airdog 165gph in the mail and now because of your video i WILL be installing a exergy valve as well thank you for taking time out of your life to save us all some big bucks !!
It seems like GM would Sell these trucks for alot less knowing that these pumps would go bad, it's like they said we will past the bucks on our customers to pay for there Fu-k ups.
Just for cp4 pump replacement would be around $3,000. The pump is around $1000 alone, labor per mitchell is 9.9hrs so at 140 per hour its about $1400 in labor at my shop. there are lots of seals and gaskets needed and fluids. Just replacing the pump is not normal usually they fail catatonically and send metal throughout the system which requires complete fuel system replacement . This truck has an exergy metering valve installed to prevent full contamination. This truck had the fuel tank dropped and cleaned and the fuel lines from the tank to the engine flushed and the fuel filter replaced.
I would DEF put something in the oil fill hole where the filler neck goes. I'm sure I would've already dropped something down inside the front cover 10 mins into this job. HAAHAHAAHA
I give you alot of credit for the amount of patience you have working on vehicles
Thank you! Sometimes its a pain in the butt, This one was actually not too bad besides trying to pry the pump out.
My friend you are obviously a great Christian man. You are the most patient man I have ever witnessed.
That is a lot of work. I could take it apart, but I couldn’t put it back together.😂

Did you replace the injecotors and rails
Not on this truck due to it having an exergy fuel metering valve installed which kept the metal from going into the injectors and rails.
To get the pump in time do you just rotate the crankshaft until it lines up?

Would the cp4.2 be direct swap or would you need to change or modify things to make work like the cp3.
I believe direct replacement, every upgrade is in the housing
Was this being replaced due to a pump failure?

Is that sensor on green attached to the pump the fuel temp sensor?
The green sensor in the back bottom of the injection pump is the fuel temperature sensor.
@@drewsshoplife thank you sir
Hi, I live in torrance, Looking for a good Diesel shop, I have a 16LML and my dad has a 15Lml, let me know we can connect?
How can I tell if metal made it to the high pressure side?
You can pull the lines off and blow them into a towel to verify. Or check the regulator in the drivers side rail, that would be the best way to tell.

Yo le cambié una cp4 a mi troca ahora tiene 2 meses en el taller no la pueden prender y solo enciende con starter fluid
No le pueden encontrar el problema.
