    Avoid round storage containers. They just waste space. Look for square and rectangular ones instead. Also, the space above the fridge is also usually wasted. I have 2 large decorative bins on top of my fridge that I use to house infrequently used and seasonal items. I also bought a nesting/stackable set of pots and pans. (Curtis Stone Durapans) All of the pots and skillets, except for my cast iron heirloom skillet have 2 short helper handles, so they take up very little space in the cupboard and are safer on the stovetop of my tiny kitchen.

      be careful about storing things on top of your fridge! they often block the heat from escaping and will make it work so much harder than it needs to, killing the fridge and the money for your electric bill 😅😅

    Some of these ideas tend to create more visual stress -- those hanging baskets or open storage. I think going through your kitchen items and decluttering multiples is one way to avoid having to use some of these hacks. When things are stored in the open they get dirty, especially in a kitchen where there is a lot of oil and dust in the air that settles on utensils in open containers. The little wire things you put in shelves to create more storage space are really great, though, and you can buy them very inexpensively at Dollar stores...if your kitchen absolutely lacks space, though, these hacks can help. But if there is little storage and no wall space, declutter like crazy first. In Julia Child's kitchen reproduced in the Smithsonian museum of American history, I recall green peg boards that cover at least one wall and hold all sorts of pans and utensils. Her kitchen would have had to be SUPER workable.

    • @agemoth
      @agemoth Рік тому

      @@johnclaybaugh9536 you could store some of your kitchen appliances on a tall shelf in a corner of the living room perhaps ? You can put different more attractive things on it also to balance the feel of it ! That's what I'm gonna have to do ! I don't use my bread oven or my blender every day !

    • @johnclaybaugh9536
      @johnclaybaugh9536 Рік тому +1

      @@agemoth I said nothing about any of that. I was just commenting that decluttering many times isn't the answer. Your comment doesn't really make sense as a reply to mine.
      Also, in a studio apartment storing kitchen items in the living room doesn't always work.

      Adding to this, not having a pissing contest. My kitchen was designed so poorly that I can't open my fridge all the way. I have to open the laundry room drawer to make room for the fridge door to swing open wide enough to even use the crisper drawer. The largest counter that has the sink and dish washer doesn't have a power outlet, so I have to take whatever I want to mix and put it on the very tiny, cramped counters because both of those have outlets.. There just isn't very much storage space either. Especially when you consider that I can't just go around punching holes into the walls and cabinets. It's just a fucking mess. This is why you have a professional remodel old apartments. Cause otherwise maintenance does stupid shit like this..

      I would not say my small kitchen is the worst, nor even the tiniest... just half a kitchen. It's a 100 yr old house. One side of kitchen has tall cabinets to a high ceiling with the sink flanked by 2 small sections of counter. The other side has a stove. That's it... no counter, no cabinets. The refrigerator is at the other end by the door. I bought an old Sellers cabinet, sanded it good, and painted nicely. It holds my food on top and my appliances on the bottom. There is a nice porcelain pull out table for extra work space. I bought an old tiny curio I sanded and painted to hold all my spices. I have a bakers rack that holds more cooking ingredients by the stove. Another curio holds my microwave and cookbooks. All my mishmash works, but I still seriously lack counter space.

      I took ex my crackers and put then in flat dollar tree containers. They are like what you would find in stationary or crafts. One says teaching tree. One has a handle. Stacked on a plastic shelf about 4 high. Nuts in pencil boxes. More nuts in long thin plastic baskets. Can goods in flats like the stores get cases in. I did buy cereal containers. My snacks, raisins nuts etc in containers off of the automotive isle with dividers. It takes up little space and is portable.
      The little thin baskets are perfect for spices. Pull out as needed and put back. They stack nice too. Get off the kitchen isle. You will have a better selection.

      I lived in apt for years- some inventive ideas I used: coloured sheets stapled to walls instead of paint to give a fresh look, you cannot see the small holes from the stapler + when you move you'll find uses for those sheets- LOL!
      Over the door shoe holders for medicine, snacks, crafts, or whatever you can think of... I put one on each side of some of my doors bc I had 3 kids & really needed space.
      Under beds are a great place to store extra toliet paper/canned goods or winter/summer clothes & blankets that aren't in use to free up closets & cabnits.
      I would constantly look around & say where's empty space... what can I store there in a convenient manner so my living space stays open! It's a challenge to be sure. Good luck!

    I have a medium sized kitchen but I cook daily for a large family and my biggest tip to cut down on space is get rid of the large oven with stove top. .....I was sick of my large stop top taking up prep space than when it became faulty rather than calling a repairmen I fulled the stove and oven combo out and my husband nailed to chopping boards together for more prep space and I bought a $50 single induction plug in hotplate and a glass round camp style oven. When U don't need them U just unplug them, they use way less energy and apart from making a giant batch of cookies I can make everything else I need to with these two items. Buy a steam insert so U can boil one vegetable and steam the other at the same time.

    Some of these ideas seem like they will take up more room, what is up with the heavy fruit basket in front of the oven?? So you can dodge falling oranges and apples while removing something hot?

    The knife wall strip is a little scary, why is there no Guards on those knives.. you bump into them and get stabbed.

    The under counter wine glass rack is a horrible idea. I have broken 3 or 4 Riedel glasses by being in a hurry and lifting a pan or plates into the bottom of the glasses. I was thankful that we didn't put our Waterford on them. What a mess!

      That is what I am doing. I am considering taking my top cabins out and using shelving. You can screw mason jar lids and hang stuff under them.

    Great video! Lots of great tips, however I will not buy anything from Garnet Hill this Holiday season because of their obnoxiously continuous interrupting ad every. Five. Minutes.
