I agree about the Secret of Evermore's sound quality. One memory from my childhood is being blown away with how cool the market place ambient sounds were on the SNES.
Just wanted to say that I appreciate the work you guys put in to release a video every week. It is something I look forward to to make me laugh and learn about those games i remember reading about back in the day but never actually played as well as games and systems I didn't know about. Keep up the sarcastic sense of humor while still being informative.
Batman Returns was scheduled for release in Japan for Famicom along with the Super Famicom version. You can find a video presentation with ingame footage, where all the texts in japanese, with release date on youtube. The Famicom release was apparently canceled at the last moment.
These Games might have to be mentioned next time, if ever: -Mcdonaldland/M.C. Kids, and it's sequel, Global Gladiators -Startropics, and it's sequel, Zoda's Revenge
I remember when I first saw Greendog back when a demo of it in a store. I thought his character design made me uncomfortable, which led me to think he was an alien creature, and was even more weirded out when the description said he was just an average dude.
There's an old episode of Happy Video Game Nerd that talks about Adventures in The Magic Kingdom. It talks about how it's actually possible to get a weapon in Pirates, and that the stars you collect can be used on power ups in the pause menu, to make things a bit easier.
I read an interview with Disney's producer for _Adventures in the Magic Kingdom_ where she talked about the process of the game's development on Disney's end. It turns out she came up with a few ideas, such as having the game take place not in Disneyland, Disney World or the Epcot Center, but a hybrid of all three. However, making the main character some cowboy-looking kid was Capcom's idea! She at first thought "Oh, you Japanese, is that what you think Americans are like?" In the end, she decided she liked that character design, so she asked them not to change it.
Game Sack Dave Btw, I found the interview itself. It reveals even more details about _Adventures in the Magic Kingdom_ I'd forgotten. If you're curious, it's at www.nintendoplayer.com/interview/former-disney-game-producer-darlene-lacey/
+Daytime Sky She really felt that way? "Oh you Japanese is that what you thin Americans are like?" That is pretty thin skinned for an American. Well it is a woman so I guess that's why. When I was a teen, we went on vacation to see the plantations homes around the South. We met a German National while there, I think at "Oak Alley" for those who know. No wonder there is so much wrong with the world today. So many easy to butthurt people.
+Slyguy threeonetwonine Says the guy who takes a comment(which sounds like she found it silly they thought American's were cowboys, and not like she was horribly offended) and has a mini-rant about people who get easily upset by what others say and do.
I can't find a reference for the Jaguar CD getting a release in Japan, which would mean we got exclusive access to that sweet, sweet Blue Lighting, Highlander and Vid Grid action!
that Pocahontas game was surprisingly good. good graphics, sound, and gameplay. a hidden gem. I also remember playing boogerman. juvenile but a fun platformer
Japan started missing out on games a lot more from the PS1 onwards. Psychonauts comes to mind as an example of a more well known game not getting localised.
Well, we're not happy but we'll manage. Honestly, aside from Boogerman the other major title that disappoints me in that it wasn't released in Japan is Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I love that game. Great episode guys.
+StopDropandLOL Yes, people who have interest in other cultures, and move to those countries of origin, like England, Mexico, Hawaii, etc, are okay, but when it comes to Japan, their "Weaboos". Get over yourself!
Are you kidding me? Boogerman has an amazingly composed soundtrack inspired by Jean-Jacques Perrey's wacky catchy childish synth music. That's one of the most memorable Sega Genesis soundtracks, Joe.
Oh, Joe. You should've kept playing Secret of Evermore. The Hall of Collosia has some of the best music I've heard on the SNES. For Jeremy Soule's first game composition he did pretty well.
Secret of Evermore isa great game. The ambiance was really unique for me back when I played it. Glad you found some aspects you liked about it. I remember getting the game Christmas of 95 along with Chrono Trigger. Maybe you could get more in to Secret of Mana if you had someone to play the game with. My bro and I played it all the time and even got a friend to join in for the final battle.
Funny fact: In the French localised version of Secret of Evermore, they locate the action at the beginning of the game in Pontoise, France instead of Podunk, USA, and the French location actually exists and is where Nintendo France HQs were located, at least at the time, bit I don't think it's changed. I first played the USA version, then the French version severak years later, and now own only the latter. Some character names were changed as well but overall I prefer the American localisation since it's the true vision of the game's original creators, naming and everything, + the 50/60Hz thing and black borders as well that we got here which no one ever fancied :P. I was never a huge fan of the alchemy stuff either... at first. I mean the first time I played though the game, of first two times (I played through that game so many times, I can't remember how many now :P) I just focused on powering up my stuff and mostly used alchemy for healing, but as I grew more and more interested in the game with every playthrough, I got into it eventually, finding out that some enemies are weak to certain alchemies, and how they can make you so overpowered as well! Some parts of the game are very annoying without resorting to alchemy use, cause some enemies are, indeed, hard to hit, either due to their hit box being hard to figure out, or simply because of their move pattern, like some flying enemies later in the game, ugh!
I felt it was a western-made game even as a young kid... It just felt so different and lacked of japanese charme and humour. Or innocence. And then the artwork... could it be any more ugly? I mean I played it still, because I like dogs - but geez... it was not japanese.
Some new episode theme ideas for Game Sack: "Games whose names begin with Y", "Shoot'em ups with nice music", "Even more Neo Geo fighting games" and, this one is for you, Dave: "Nintendo games where you CAN shoot upwards".
Loved playing Secret of Evermore when I was young. Rented Boogerman and at the time thought it was hilarious. Did you know that Boogerman was voiced by Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson)?
I'm glad you mentioned Secret of Evermore. It was always one of my favorites growing up and I've beaten it many times. I prefer it to Secret of Mana. I don't know why some people don't like the game's soundtrack though. It's honestly one of the best and gets even better the further you progress. I admit, the alchemy system is broken and tedious though, as is regrinding every time you acquire a new weapon.
The farts on the SNES version sound like they're under several thick blankets. The farts on the Genesis sound like the individual doing the farting is wearing underwear made out of sandpaper.
for future reference, south americans don't have their own game region. At least for retro games, we either import the american versions or the european versions (which have spanish options which is better than nothing but those only work in portable consoles because they're still PAL)
Brett Bates oh right. I forgot regions depend on the company. At least I'm sure nintendo consoles haven't made south american regions as far as I'm concerned
+joakkar Neither Nintendo nor SEGA had their own region encoding for Brazil. Here, every console from them were exactly the same as their north american counterparts (sometimes with the signal converted to PAL-M, but their region encoding was the same from North America). We got brazilian packages and manuals, but the games were the same from North America.
+SEGA Retro BR Well considering the Master System TecToy did a chunk of romhacks and released games FAR longer than in the US, so I would say it is fair to say the games weren't exactly the same ;)
Secret of Evermore is one of my favorite SNES games. Great soundtrack, and definitely worth playing. Good list! I want to add a few of these to my collection still, but of course I already have Secret of Evermore.
I grew up with Greendog being one of the few games I owned for my Genesis, was one that I felt was challenging due to controls or level design, but as a kid I felt it was me not being good enough so I played and played this game for tens of hours. Now I'm nostalgia ridden to love it.
Hi Dave, I actually do apprieciate that you don't say, "F stands for fuck". Our computer is in the kitchen so my kids are always around while I watch Game sack. So I just wanted to say thanks dude. Craig
Apparently, the "f" word wasn't even f*ck at all. It stands for Fellatio, which I've found in the comment section and also which im not familiar. Im going to google it though.
There's no Videogame market in South America (there's no such thing as "Released in South America"). That's why almost everything is pirated. Nowadays with digital distributions that is changing, but we still have to pay 800 dollars for a PS4 because of importation taxes.
All of South America? That's absolutely awful. I'm actually so sorry. I never had to deal with not having a console other than paying the normal few for it, like 400 or something. Thank you for still importing, and keeping the spirit alive!
I remember seeing the Greendog game at the local video rental stores but I can't recall if I played it or not...played so many Genesis games it all kinda blurs together. RIP Blockbuster.
Secret of Evermore and Dragon's Crest on the SNES are two games I may not have ever heard of were it not for your channel. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Greendog was the first game I ever played. I think I was 3 and a friend of my mums brought their megadrive over. I got a mastersystem that Christmas and never stopped playing.
Funny that you mention never seeing Pocahontas, that's one of the few disney movies of that time that I still haven't seen and have no interest to! The game looks pretty good, interesting that it doesn't have enemies and boss battles. P.S. GREEEEEN DAWWWWG!!
I think Japan is happy for not getting most of these games. They're happy with their raunchy games. With the exception of Secret of Evermore, I've never played most of these games.
Boogerman is one of those weird hidden gems of the Genesis both you guys and I had the pleasure to find! Keep on rocking! One game you might find interesting is Tin Head for Genesis (or Megadrive).
Always great to wake up to a nice steaming Game Sack in the morning! I used to play Boogerman and try to hide it from my parents. Ooooh an idea maybe? Games you used to try to hide from your parents.
Strider for NES is an interesting case on this topic, it was delayed in Japan and eventually cancelled, but was later localized and released in the US.
Secret of Evermore is one of my favorite SNES games. Because it was made in the US there isn't an issue of understanding obscure Japanese mannerisms or odd design choices. A boy and his ever changing dog going from land to land exchanging money and learning about what would eventually come to be known as The Matrix.
Really nice episode guys. How about covering more games that were released in Brazil? Been finding a lot of interesting Master System games that were released exclusively there (Like a port of the SNES version of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, The Master System just keeps on surprising me with all these games)
OMG, I forgot all about the Disney Land game. I never owned it, but I rented it many many times swearing each time, "this will be the time I beat it! I'll never have to rent this game again!" each of my family members were good at one or two levels each, so it was a group effort. It was unbelievably hard, but we did eventually beat it after having rented it probably 6-7 times. We never bought the game because we felt like every time we rented it, that would be the time we finally won (redundant sentence, sorry, lol). Anyway, thank you guys for helping me remember an awesome time in my life. Keep up the great videos!
+Gamesack You guys forgot to mention that Boogerman is basically a parody of Super Mario Bros. 1st, he's a plumber/janitor. 2nd - His booger flicking is one of the things people use to say Mario was doing in SMB1 bc that's what his fireball animation looked like. 3rd The toilets are obvious parodies of the SMB green sewer pipes
Nice! Been waiting for Green Dog. Goofy mechanics and silly comcept, but the music and pacing made it one of the most relaxing games I grew op with. Everytime I got stressed getting my ass kicked in Hellfire, Green Dog was the one I used as a relaxant. Good trip down memory lane and great show like always.
Jeremy Soule is great. The town music in Oblivion is some of my absolute favorite from any game. For that matter, all the Jeremy Soule Elder Scrolls games are in my top 10 favorite video game soundtracks.
gozinta82 I didn't see the movie at that time, so I want not knowing the story, that being said, it quite an interesting game. But rough on the mechanical side, but still interesting.
Its literally the first time i ever heard of Greendog haha. Also i didnt know boogerman was also on SNES, i always thought it was a genesis only game for some reasons. Another great episode guys!
I actually owned both the Pocahontas and the Boogerman back in the 90's and I must admit they're both quite a good games. Especially the Pocahontas. Recommend this one for sure.
6:03 Pah! Back in my day when we wanted to cast magic, we didn't just need reagents, but also words to say and maybe a bit of fancy foot- or handwork, and by gum we liked it! Did I mention you had to memorize the spell for each time you wanted to cast it? You young'uns and your MP these days...
Before at those times and eras. The occidental developers, really didn't knew on how to make a decent video games. Japan was the king and gods for those eras. But now on, we have a different Story. Japan, is a somewhat obsolete and the Americans / Europeans are more relevant than never before. I really miss those days, when Japan made wonderful things for everyone. Real quality of Games and Animation Cartoons. But for now, they are history. RIP Japanese industry.
What do you mean? All consoles today are made by Japanese companies except the Xbox, which is made by the American Microsoft. And there are plenty of Japanese game companies making big games like Sega, Capcom, Konami, and Square Penis
man, i used to play greendog so much. i'm about 5 or 6 yo at that time. love the game and the last genesis game i ever played too, because couple day later my brother bought a PS1
This is the best UA-cam show about video games, starring the two people you would most want to go have a beer with. Thanks, guys.
Good luck getting Joe to have a beer, or to go out, or getting Dave to stop drinking once you have a beer with him.
+SeGa32xXx1 Since I live in Maine, I doubt I would have much success getting either of them to go have a beer. Maybe I could ply them with lobster!
+J. Craig Anderson Ayuh. Get them down nor'east and and i am sure they would have a wicked good time eating that Lobstah
deathcrustpunk It tastes so good!!
+J. Craig Anderson Lobster works. :)
I agree about the Secret of Evermore's sound quality. One memory from my childhood is being blown away with how cool the market place ambient sounds were on the SNES.
[Coury] Finally. GREENDOG.
+My Life in Gaming GREENDOG!

Lol. Where do you call home? One thing about us Americans is we don't mind criticism. There are definitely a lot of stupid people here and we know it.
Its 8 in the morning and the weather outside is terrible. Perfect time to watch a new Game Sack episode, thanks guys.

I guess Greendog was too "radical" for Japanese. Only thing it's missing is some surf rock.
and weed
I remember when I first saw Greendog back when a demo of it in a store. I thought his character design made me uncomfortable, which led me to think he was an alien creature, and was even more weirded out when the description said he was just an average dude.
He kinda looks weird. Where is his face?!
Imagine if Greendog would be Sega's mascot. Would we have arcade-like surfing games now....
Next, do "Games left in Space." Because, damn aliens...
This sounds like what the final episode of classic game room might be called.
+ChrisLandEverything Don't leave them in space! The aliens will come and attack us in an entirely fan-servicey manner.
Love the little stop motion bits guys
Thanks!
I feel as if the episode should be retitled "GREENDAWG". Give the people what they want. (Great episode by the way)
Your stop motion animation work is amazing :)
Thanks!
+Game Sack I also enjoyed the stop motion.

That is pretty thin skinned for an American. Well it is a woman so I
guess that's why.
When I was a teen, we went on vacation to see the plantations homes
around the South. We met a German National while there, I think at "Oak
Alley" for those who know. She was a very nice lady, but when we told
her we were from Texas, she started looking for our horses. I thought it
was the funniest thing I had ever seen. As a Texan, I hate horses, hate
cowboy hats, and can only tolerate boots if I need them for work safety.
Other than that I'm just a long haired country boy. But i didn't get
offended, I though it was funny.

So, what rhymes with RATIO?
I have no idea.
Today all the F games
I can't find a reference for the Jaguar CD getting a release in Japan, which would mean we got exclusive access to that sweet, sweet Blue Lighting, Highlander and Vid Grid action!
+badbirdkc : Well a rule in this case would be the console would have HAD to been release in Japan.
that Pocahontas game was surprisingly good. good graphics, sound, and gameplay. a hidden gem. I also remember playing boogerman. juvenile but a fun platformer
Adventures of Batman & Robin on the Genesis was only released in the US and Europe. And it's *really* worth checking out, it's super impressive.
Dave's "special human skill": setting an interest rate cap on a fixed rate mortgage.
Brilliant, sir.
Japan started missing out on games a lot more from the PS1 onwards.
Psychonauts comes to mind as an example of a more well known game not getting localised.

I liked one or two of the tunes but the rest didn't grab me.
Great episode, though you can't go wrong talking about a game like GREEENDAAAWG!
Oh, Joe. You should've kept playing Secret of Evermore. The Hall of Collosia has some of the best music I've heard on the SNES. For Jeremy Soule's first game composition he did pretty well.
I'll keep that in mind!
best review-show on the earth internet

I didn't know Secret of Evermore was an American-made game. To me, it always looked like a usual 16-Bit Squaresoft game.
+CarozQH
Really?. Anyways, of course it looked liked a 16bits squaresoft game because it is a 16bits squaresoft game.
+eng3d I inferred by "usual" that he meant Japan-made as the standard point of contrast... :)
+CarozQH I always thought there was something funny about SOE, the sprite patterns, the hair of the main character, something was off
I felt it was a western-made game even as a young kid...
It just felt so different and lacked of japanese charme and humour. Or innocence.
And then the artwork... could it be any more ugly?
I mean I played it still, because I like dogs - but geez... it was not japanese.
it looks ugly

Hahaha, yeah, that's what I thought as well. "Stupid GameSack!" :D
Just a bit of Trivia. There is at least one city in the US called Podunk and it's in Tennessee.
+Crossplay It's also the first town in Mother, the first game in the Earthbound series.
I felt nothing but dread watching Greendog's gameplay.
Awesome episode!
Loved playing Secret of Evermore when I was young.

I love how Joe says "GREENDOG!!"
To be honest - if we would've gotten Seiken Densetsu 3 instead of Secret of Evermore I wouldn't be pissed.
Watched the intro, pressed like button. Because i already know the episode will be good.
Just ordered some pizza, and bout to grab a brew out the fridge. Time to enjoy!

I loved the Secret of Evermore. The soundtrack is really nice.
I also occasionally play it when I'm having trouble falling asleep.
the F in the car segment stands for "fuel" probably =)
love ending my work nights with your videos..always top notch quality
Wheres my daring Boogerman comparison? I have to know if the farts were better on snes or genesis!
The farts on the SNES version sound like they're under several thick blankets. The farts on the Genesis sound like the individual doing the farting is wearing underwear made out of sandpaper.

Thank you Gamesack. What a great episode. Greetings from Germany

I love your videos. Watch ‘em every night.
Secret of Evermore: Just use spells that have easy to get ingredients, like hardball, level them up and spam them: you win.
Wait -- Dave actually has a Sega system that Joe doesn't have!?! I guess the love of portables must outweigh the Sega hate.

Jose Luis Rodriguez If i recall correctly, Brazil had a video game boom in the 90s and there are some Brazil exclusive games. Just Brazil tho
The Pocahontas game actually looks really sweet :O it was also one of the select handful of Disney movies I grew up with.

I'm pretty sure the Japanese are still disappointed for not getting Evermore.
+Amber Short Oh you're definitely missing out on Boogerman... You should totally go to eBay now and get a copy :P
+Sean Toohey I'm sure I will. :p
+Sean Toohey I actually like boogerman.
+The Treacherous Disciplin They might, they still got pretty good other SNES JRPGs that were as good or even better.
I love how Dave snickers at his own jokes.. I do that too
Planet Fellatio.
my favorite game
*****
what team do you support
*****
don't tell me you support chelsea...
***** TheKingOfTown Damn it guys, remember the good times on Planet Fellatio?
*****
who do you support then?
Boogerman is one of those weird hidden gems of the Genesis both you guys and I had the pleasure to find! Keep on rocking! One game you might find interesting is Tin Head for Genesis (or Megadrive).
Oh man I could never member the name of the game where your a surfer dude...GREEN DOG!!
This episode has the best joke you've ever done, Dave.
Joe, I love the stop motion bits. This one with the double sided tape was clever.
Always great to wake up to a nice steaming Game Sack in the morning! I used to play Boogerman and try to hide it from my parents. Ooooh an idea maybe? Games you used to try to hide from your parents.
The Pocahontas game's artstyle is actually incredibly good. The animation too.
I like your reviews. They are very solid and interesting. Thx for doing them :)
Do you guys happen to know whether or not you have fans from Japan? BTW, you guys rock.
+Peace X Love I think we have a few. I hope they post a comment.
+Game Sack Dave One of them did a few comments up and a couple idiots jumped on them calling them weeabos SMH
@@GenBloodLust cause they are weebos
Green Dog was a surprisingly good game at the time.
Jeremy Soule is great. The town music in Oblivion is some of my absolute favorite from any game. For that matter, all the Jeremy Soule Elder Scrolls games are in my top 10 favorite video game soundtracks.
Name of song from credits? 25:40
i loved the sarcasm at the 20 second mark. that is definitely how i roast games
I've played Pocahontas, and it was amazing! Anyone fan of puzzler platformer should try it
+Hemang Chauhan I was actually considering that. When he showed that and mentioned the no enemies thing I went 'hmmm.' LOL
gozinta82 I didn't see the movie at that time, so I want not knowing the story, that being said, it quite an interesting game. But rough on the mechanical side, but still interesting.
Hemang Chauhan
Another one that was a bit of a hidden gem as far as animated series games go, is Gargoyles.
I forgot about Pocahontas. Could that be the first time the game adaptation is better than the movie?
I actually liked green dog when I was little. I haven't played it in forever so I might hook up my old genesis soon...
I'm jealous of that Blast Processing and Screw Attack shirt you guys are rocking!
+Klye™ Also, Greendog The Beached Surfer Dude is my only surviving Mega Drive game, I never beat it tough =(
Love the Uncharted Waters song at the end. I have that exact version on my playlist.
Secret of Evermore is a hidden gem for the SNES and a great loss for Japan
