Hey everyone. Please keep in mind that Japan isn't in Europe. So if it was released in Japan, it can't be in a Left in Europe episode. But thanks for the suggestions!
Been very pleased with Game Sack lately. The quality is very high in each episode, the writing and narration has improved dramatically from the old days, and all in all, I find Game Sack is a very enjoyable, underrated series.
There are a lot more NTSC countries but you guys are getting way better at these videos! The endings are just getting better and better. Thanks for the upload guys. It was a pleasure.
For the SNES: Tintin in Tibet and Tintin: prisoners of the Sun. pretty hard games but they're also based on an belgian- franco comic series, that is very popular over here.
Thanks for this series Joe and Dave. I ran through all 110 episodes while studying for boards and I owe a big thank you to Game Sack for keeping me sane these past two months.
Someone here (or both of you) are very, very good at taking a short bit of your struggles with certain bits of gameplay and giving the viewer a really good sense of how frustrating that part is, etc (when trying to jump off the waves was a great example). I felt like I was playing that part!
Got a ticket yesterday for pulling over on the side of the highway to avoid distracted drivers and watch fireworks. So far the only highlight of my weekend was this video, love ya game sack!
You should make an "left in Latin América". We have a bunch of really weird stuff, like Fido Dido, Harry Potter, Lord of the Ring, all for Sega Génesis and all super pireted and bootleggy.
Besides being slower PAL is higher resolution than NTSC. Most video game systems didn't utilize this but instead squashed the picture so that the pixels weren't square. Later video games are only in 60Hz even in Europe as most later PAL systems accepted lower resolution 60Hz with thicker scanlines just as well as native 50Hz.
Interesting. I guess re-runs of it were being shown there a lot still in the 90's. In North America, most people born in 1989 have likely never seen He-Man, or even heard of it. Here in North America, i think it stopped getting much air-time (especially on the most widely available channels) some time in the late 80's, and well before the 90's.
@@syncmonism I missed the original run of the orginal He-Man show. But I was into the movie and its toys when it was released. I saw bits of the second He-Man show. But at that time I mostly watched Ninja Turtles.
A few random Europe only titles that might be worth noting Maken Shao - Demon Sword (PS2) Ghoul Panic (PS1) Another Code R (Wii) Overblood 2 (PS1) Disaster Day of Crisis (Wii) Fighting Vipers 2 (Dreamcast) Bodycount (Megadrive) Terranigma (SNES)
I would like to thank Joe & Dave for taking the time to make these videos they are great for helping fight off boredom & reliving childhood memories. Cheers fellas :)
I don't know if someone already said about this, but Asterix was released for the Master System here in Brazil too. It was a popular console with good sales and that's why many european exclusives were available in the country. And there's more: the publisher from Brazil (Tec Toy) made a partnership with Sega and created many "hacked games" for the console with famous cartoon characters. They made one Asterix hack called "TV Colosso", based on a famous TV show with the same name.
I have no no idea if they're available in the US, but if you get your hands on an Asterix-Comic, I really recommend you to read it! They're nicely drawn and very fun to read. A lot of people in Europe grew up with them. :)
Another plus to the Retron 5 is that it has a 50hz mode for PAL games. I'm really glad you guys did this episode. I've been curious about PAL games especially since they're usually in English.
True fact : A decent PAL conversion (rare!) can be better than the NTSC version, since it has more lines in the display. DOA 2 on Dreamcast is full speed, and full screen PAL on the 50Hz option. Shame more developers didn't make the effort.
Thanks for another great video guys . I went straight on ebay after I'd watched and picked up second samurai for £5 . That's like around $7 . I always try and pick these games up quickly because every time either of you say you like a game it's value seems to shoot up lol . Proves how much all your subscribers value your opinion . Thanks again
Waiting for a "Left in Brazil" episode. A lot of Master System games like Street Fighter II, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, Férias Frustradas do Pica-Pau (Wody WoodPeecker) and some GameGear ports to Master System.
I would like to see this one. It could include the wonder boy hacks ("Mônica no Castelo do Dragão" and "Turma da Mônica em O Resgate"). There is also the MK3 port.
Another great episode! For whatever reason it never dawns on me to think of Europe when looking for good imports, my mind always goes to Japan, but I guess that's for good reason. If you guys are ever hurting for games to feature in your left in Japan series, I'd love to be of assistance once I'm settled in back in the states.
I for some reason thought you guys were going to put in the Smurfs on Mega CD, unless you've covered it before...I can't recall. =) I helped getting it to Good Deal Games for production and re-release in America at one point.
Good gawd please make another of these. I recently moved to Sweden from NYC and I wish I'd seen this episode earlier cause I've passed on the Asterix SMS game and some others in this episode out of sheer not-knowingness
Hi guys! I'm very happy you mentioned "Second Samurai". It was the very first game I got with my Mega Drive and I simply LOVED it. I never knew this game was not released outside Europe, since I got my copy here in Brazil, but in fact (I checked) it wasn't. By the way, congratulations! Your show is amazing!
It's a darned shame that the He-Man game wasn't very good. It's a decent license that lends itself to a good hack & slash game or maybe even a light action RPG. But that game you showed? It puts the "cringe" in Cringer (the tiger). Great run of episodes over these past three weeks, guys. It's no small feat to put that kind of work together-- I enjoyed them all!
John NoNameGibbon I was just going to mention that! It's on Netflix - or it was. I mean to go back and watch the rest of it, if it's still available. It's a shame it was cancelled after one or two seasons - the same fate of the more recent Thundercats remake, which I heard was also a vast improvement over its predecessor. Cartoon Network seems to have a way of greenlighting 80s nostalgic reboots, then dropping all support :/
I was about to say that North America may be the only continent where all of its countries use NTSC, but I didn't notice that you corrected yourself. However, that's only the case if you don't count Greenland, which is considered part of Europe due to being part of the Danish Realm. South Korea, among other countries, use NTSC as well, but no one thinks about those countries. Also, France has their own standard called SECAM, which is also used in Russia and Mongolia. Also, they changed the name from Mega Drive to Genesis to signify a new beginning as well, not just because of Trademarks. Basically, they changed the name because of trademarks, and they chose Genesis to signify a new beginning.
Really really enjoyed this...sure there are quite a few more NES games but im sure they are pretty well known like Mr. Gimmick or New Ghostbusters 2 but both games id love to hear your opinion on...on the Master System there is Master of Darkness however it did make it to NA on the Game Gear
PAL is a pretty terrible standard honestly. The resolution is ok, but the refresh is absolutely awful. I can't stand to look at 50Hz, it gives me a headache. I only own one PAL game...Metroid Prime for the Gamecube (the PAL version is far superior to the US release, it has finished/completed lore, improved graphics, and a couple of the boss fights were fixed/finished). Fortunately, it runs just fine on a US Gamecube and will run in 60Hz (and you can use Swiss to force it to 480p if you have an HDMI adapter).
Game Sack Excuse me, but one things, you mention Asterix, and you do not play Asterix and Obelix? I swear, it is a level completley above the original asterix, and its on the SNES. Seriously, I'm advising you to check out this game
The Asterix part made me nostalgic. Not just because of the franchise itself, which was a significant part of my childhood, but also because the Master System game was one of the video games I ever owned (along with Land of Illusion and Sonic the Hedgehog, which was built into my MS). It's funny how a console with a not very impressive game library had some really good licensed games.
Kinan Arous I think it's something to do with English speaking countries, it's the same deal in UK and I am willing to bet it's similar in Australia for example.
Kinan Arous Americans pay little attention. Tin Tin was shown in the 90's on Nickelodeon and a CGI movie adaptation of Tin Tin was made a few years ago here in America yet it wasn't popular.
Great video guys. Keep'em coming. As for left in Europe I was thinking WHIZ on the Saturn but that did actually get a Japanese release :( How about Formula Karts Special Edition also for the Saturn? That was a Euro only release. Here's a video of it on my site that I made before the days of HD - www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pages/formulakarts.htm
Arrimas Arrington Hmm, there's not much to see really. Most of the ports are pretty close to the original games. I did cover Street Fighter II on the X68000 in my Battle of the Ports video. Hey, maybe the Game Sack guys could do a X68000 arcade port special? How about it guys? Show the world how cool and powerful the X68000 really is.
Great game! Hard as nails though - absolutely brutal The awesome 90's dance soundtrack kept me chipping away at it! The Holland music track, in particular, is gorgeous. I miss the days of Redbook Audio :)
The Smurfs for the SNES and Mega Drive is a game that was left in Europe, even when Nintendo Power made a big fuss over advertising it like it was going to come out in North America in 1996.
When I heard that Apidya music at the beginning, I figured that would be one of the games you covered in this vid. Had you already covered it? Did you like it so much you started using the tune? :D
you seriously want to tell me you never heard of asterix before? everyone here in europe knows them. i mean, we also know your awful comic characters like spiderman, wolverine and what not.
Finally The Second Samurai! I played that game back then and have great memories about it, but didn't remember the name of the game and have always waited it to pop up on Game Sack and it finally did! I didn't know it was European exclusive though. Good episode. Now do an episode about games that never came to Europe! You'll find out it's full of best games ever and the list is long.
There was a great Asterix arcade game, a beat-em-up made by Konami (1992). AFAIK it was never ported to other systems so you'd have to emulate to play it, but it's worth checking out. It's basically like other Konami beat-em-ups from that time: a bit shallow and repetitive, but really fun and well made with lots of charm.
It is kinda silly how easy for most european TV sets it is to run NTSC signal with, while also having PAL compatibility and apparently the superior PAL60. Apparently while NTSC is 59.94 Hz, PAL60 signal is true 60.0Hz and runs that extra 0.06 frames faster. Of course some older CRT TV sets are not NTSC compatible but a PAL TV compatible with pretty much everything is pretty common to come by.
HOLD IT! IIRC, we received 4 Asterix games total in North America: - That crappy Genesis game you mentionned (Great Rescue) - That Asterix beat-em-up arcade game by Konami - An Asterix SNES/PC platformer game by Infogrames - Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix for PS2 The rest... yeah, pretty much land-locked in Europe. However, there's a good reason for that: comic books in Europe are different than in the US, with different art styles, stories, genres and of course characters, so if one would make a video game with a European comic book, it would be wiser to release it in Europe first, since it's the main market. If the popularity doesn't catch on in America, well... what,s the point of releasing it there?
Thanks for your work guys. I watch your videos because they are enjoyable. Don't even have any retro systems nor games. Just a PS3 that gets switched on maybe three times a year. Keep it up!
There are a lot of bande dessinée/franco-belgian comics video games exclusive to Europa. A ton of Asterix( and Obelix) games, the only series that puts out games to this day, The Smurf, a few of them actually found their way to the US, Lucky Luke, Tintin and Spirou et Fantasio. Can't tell you if all of them are good, but the Infogrames tend to be good. And there is Papyrus for the GBC which is also pretty good. Hard to market those games to you since you don't appreciate the bande dessinee.
Another good episode guy's you showed a few games there that I wasn't aware off and I am in England so will be sure to try a few of them out. I ain't sure whether or not you have done an episode on prototype/development kits just chucking it out there as an idea for a future episode would love to see something like that.
I imagine most of the Asterix games stayed in Europe for commercial reasons due to the comical Gauls popularity in France, Belgium and Holland. I would doubt John Madden football games would sell well in the UK though I know some were released on the Mega Drive. I think fewer games are marketed for specific regions ie Europe North America, South America , Asia and Australasia these days, particularly as Japanese role players are gaining world wide popularity and the DVD game format is more economically viable than cartridges so publishers can take a chance.
Love this episode! Interesting fact: There was in fact a Japanese game for Super Famicom called "Jelly Boy" released by Sony Imagesoft. Entirely different from the European release. The Japanese Jelly Boy came to America as our Smart Ball!
Really cool episode, I laughed at the beginning when Dave said that europe is the only place where PAL was used. :D Some games that did not get North-American release are: Donald Duck in Deep Duck Trouble for Master System, it was released only in europe and brasil. Mr. Gimmick for NES, was released in europe and japan. As I understand it's not very import friendly and it is expensive. The Firemen for SNES, released in europe and japan. Cannon Fodder for SNES, I think it was european exclusive. Freshly Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland for Nintendo DS, only released in europe and japan. Go-Go Cosmo Cops for Nintendo DS, only released in europe. It would be great to get a episode where you show games that were released only in america.
I was almost sad to see your video in my sub box - because I knew I wouldn't be playing Shovel Knight for at least 23 more minutes. Great Episode Guys!!!
Hey everyone. Please keep in mind that Japan isn't in Europe. So if it was released in Japan, it can't be in a Left in Europe episode. But thanks for the suggestions!
Hahaha!
***** Well there is a Reason why people refer to NTSC as "Never the same Color" ;)
For N64 PAL games I use N64 Passport..... BUT IT DOESN'T WORK WITH SOME GAMES... Including Taz Express.... I have a Pal equipment for that game.
Oh great, they moved Japan again. I'm getting sick of trying to find that country on a map every time it moves.
***** Because owning a PAL N64 was after getting the Passport.
Really love these guys - a very moderate and unhyped, yet professional and non-corporate reviews. Subscribed.
French territories use SECAM. System Entirely Contrary to the Accepted Method.
Been very pleased with Game Sack lately. The quality is very high in each episode, the writing and narration has improved dramatically from the old days, and all in all, I find Game Sack is a very enjoyable, underrated series.
Thanks!

Thank You and we're glad you like our show!
I love sitting down with a cup of tea to watch game sack.
I am from the EU, so a left in the USA video would appeal to me.
Great work guys.

We got 50hz, you got 60hz, we got scart, you got s-video, I'd call that about even Joe.
I'll take av at 60hz any day.
+Gazulo Marquez and one Parodius version only for japan and LA
Gazulo Marquez I'm pretty sure they actually covered Fido Dido in one of their videos.
Oh, & don't forget the CLASSIC DOS game Mega Phoenix.
That moreso belongs in a Bootleg installment.
A smile comes across my face everytime I see a new Game Sack episode in my news feed! Love your show!
Another awesome video that brightened my day! You guys are the best
Game Sack episodes never get old!!.
Always great to see a new episode of Game Sack. Ever though of doing a Left in Development episode. So many great games that could of been.
Yes! We have an Unreleased Games episode.

He-man was very big in Ireland. I was born in Ireland in '89 and I remember being obsessed with the show.

A few random Europe only titles that might be worth noting
Maken Shao - Demon Sword (PS2)
Ghoul Panic (PS1)
Another Code R (Wii)
Overblood 2 (PS1)
Disaster Day of Crisis (Wii)
Fighting Vipers 2 (Dreamcast)
Bodycount (Megadrive)
Terranigma (SNES)
I think some of those were also in Japan.
Terranigma is the highlight I see right there
Love the channel fellas, you help me find fun stuff on my old systems.
Master System Asterix is epic, including the soundtrack.
I would like to thank Joe & Dave for taking the time to make these videos they are great for helping fight off boredom & reliving childhood memories. Cheers fellas :)

I have no no idea if they're available in the US, but if you get your hands on an Asterix-Comic, I really recommend you to read it! They're nicely drawn and very fun to read. A lot of people in Europe grew up with them. :)
Always look forward to the ending, good work and thanks for making my Sunday better.
We keep all the good games for ourselves.
hahahahahaaamwahahaHAWUHAHAHAHAHAHA.... *ahem*. Excuse me.
Waiting for a "Left in Brazil" episode. A lot of Master System games like Street Fighter II, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, Férias Frustradas do Pica-Pau (Wody WoodPeecker) and some GameGear ports to Master System.
We might be able to get a single episode out of that. It would probably be 100% Master System based I think.
Mega Drive too... Like Duke Nukem 3D, Nightmare Circus, Show do Milhão (trivia game in portuguese... so...) and Guitar Idol (a Guitar Hero rip off).
I would like to see this one.
It could include the wonder boy hacks ("Mônica no Castelo do Dragão" and "Turma da Mônica em O Resgate"). There is also the MK3 port.
QWERTYCommander That's the point, he is proposing a "Left in Brazil" episode.
Guilherme Dellagustin
Didn't read that. Sorry.
Keep up the good work guys.. You guys have no ego and are real game fans!
Cool, send us a PM in the future!
That would be awesome Thank You!
Everytime I look at lists of fan translations I can feel my social life die
You're show is pretty fuckin' radical and it's always a pleasant surprise when I see it in my inbox. Thanks, guys.
"Next time on Game Sack: Games We Can't Pronounce"
so so many good videos from you guys . Glad i found your channel!
That was the sissiest "by the power of Grayskull" I've ever heard.
Try this:
He-Man: By The Power of Gayskull
Love Gamesack always nice to see a new episode.

Asterix on Master System = The Best
And P.S. I loved the music!
Nah, the Asterix arcade game is the best

Great run of episodes over these past three weeks, guys. It's no small feat to put that kind of work together-- I enjoyed them all!
maybe someone should re-skin golden ax with he-man characters...
lmao! "Cringe in Cringer" good one man! you should write for the show!
I gotta say He-Man was never a great franchise, it was a cheaply animated toy advert.
Asterix was good though
John NoNameGibbon
I was just going to mention that! It's on Netflix - or it was. I mean to go back and watch the rest of it, if it's still available. David White once you get another left in Europe episode out, I'm suggesting a game for it. The firefighters for the snes
Is that the same game as The Firemen by Human? If so then we talked about it in Left in Japan 2 and then later realized it got released in Europe.
David White yeah it was released in europe
I sit and have my snack, while watching game sack, on the big screen. Yeah you guys are THAT great.
This video was too fast for my PAL brain to comprehend.
LOL!
Best thing about sundays, Game Sack.
Oh geeeeez I hope you guys cover European games in this
Sorry, no can do.
Game Sack Cringer. He-Man's Green cat thingie is named Cringer
***** and Battle-Cat when he's transformed

no. ಠ_ಠ
***** Its just European, not "you're-a-peein'"
LOVE YOU GUYS!
PAL is a pretty terrible standard honestly. The resolution is ok, but the refresh is absolutely awful. I can't stand to look at 50Hz, it gives me a headache. Best Game Sack intro yet!
Still have my Master System copy of Asterix from 1990. Great game.
As a North American Master System fan, you sir have my envy.
I still have it too. :D
Amazing feat considering the game was released in 1991!
Great to see you guys highlight some of the games that we only got over here in Europe :) I didn't realize that Asterix wasn't known in the US :)
Game Sack - Left in Europe Epilogue - AKA Experimentations in Soft Focus
Actually it was due to low light at Dave's place so we had to open the aperture way big-like.
Game Sack Figured as much. Thanks for the reply and the great video! I always enjoy grabbing a beer and rocking some Game Sack.
Game Sack Excuse me, but one things, you mention Asterix, and you do not play Asterix and Obelix? I swear, it is a level completley above the original asterix, and its on the SNES. Seriously, I'm advising you to check out this game
***** True. I also quite enjoyed Lucky Luke or The Smurfs games (all on SNES. Asterix on SNES is just an average platformer IMO.
Ruudos
Don't forget about Smurfs on NES. The music is fabulous, the characters are large, and it's a pretty hard but creative platformer.
From Italy, I love Game Sack!
So, interestingly, I'm pretty sure Gradius is supposed to be " Gladius", as in the roman sword, and it got engrished....
Another slammin episode. Thanks again guys
Game Sack is the best video game show on youtube
Thank You!
Guys you haven't heard of Asterix?!!! now tell me you don't know Tin Tin.
As far as I'm aware Asterix and Obelix are popular in the entire Europe, apart from UK.
I am Syrian and heard of al these comics, USA seems to be living in a separate universe.
Kinan Arous
I think it's something to do with English speaking countries, it's the same deal in UK and I am willing to bet it's similar in Australia for example.

i think this was probably the best post-show skit u guys ever did. (i like the rest too tho but this one was awesome)

hello
Arrimas Arrington nope, sadly not. Game Sack did a Sharp X68000 episode. YOu should check that out.
Arrimas Arrington
Hmm, there's not much to see really. Most of the ports are pretty close to the original games. I did cover Street Fighter II on the X68000 in my Battle of the Ports video. Hey, maybe the Game Sack guys could do a X68000 arcade port special? How about it guys? Show the world how cool and powerful the X68000 really is.

The Smurfs for the SNES and Mega Drive is a game that was left in Europe, even when Nintendo Power made a big fuss over advertising it like it was going to come out in North America in 1996.
yes I'm an australian so this is relevent for me
game sack is the best..good review no game bashing like other channel..u guys are the best..game sack 4 ever
You should do, left in Africa
Awesome as always guys :-) being from England it was cool to see this as we also miss out on quite a few games. Especially for certain retro consoles
NTSC and metric for the win!!!!
Also I'm Canadian and I call it a Genesis
Dreamcastpowa Mine says Genesis.
leadbones mine says megadrive. So?
Gambit771 Nice job getting the point. Really, really great. It's obviously both, and it doesn't matter. Well done.
Yes.
OK.
Nothing to be upset about.
Yes, Asterix never was popular in America, as it was here in Europe. This is not, in any way, the fault of Game Sack.
Astrix is french so some English also don't know about him, for years I thought oblexis was astrix as he is portrayed as the main character
Game Sack
i wasn't upset, just really shocked. ;) sorry if it sounded like that. but you are missing out a really great comic.
Asterix is very popular here in Indonesia, strange that US people never heard about asterix.
I love your corny little post-credit skits. They're so funny. They always make me lol. ^_^
Love your channel and content!
Another great episode chaps and maybe your best after credits scene yet :-) keep up the good work.
I absolutely love your show. Thanks guys!
We had Asterix for the Master System here in Brasil. I loved it!
Yes it's practical for retrogaming
HOLD IT!
IIRC, we received 4 Asterix games total in North America:
- That crappy Genesis game you mentionned (Great Rescue)
- That Asterix beat-em-up arcade game by Konami
- An Asterix SNES/PC platformer game by Infogrames
- Asterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix for PS2
The rest... yeah, pretty much land-locked in Europe.
Asterix for the Master System was one of my absolute favorite games as a child. So many wonderful memories of playing it for hours. :D
The SNES Asterix game was supposed to get a US release from Electro Brain but it was cancelled because Asterix is very unpopular in the US?
Another nice episode. Thanks.
Thanks for your work guys. I watch your videos because they are enjoyable. Don't even have any retro systems nor games. Just a PS3 that gets switched on maybe three times a year. Keep it up!
Such a good episode. Lots of game I knew nothing about. You guys are closing in on 100,00 fast!
Terranigma is the only PAL title that I really, REALLY want. Good thing people make reproduction cartridges tweaked for NTSC systems.
Oh man, 2 weeks? I swear i ate lunch while watching Game Sack for the last month, am i the only one? its like saturday morning cartoons to me
i cant find that music on you ending titles at 21:16 I Listen to the whole Professor Laton soundtrack but it wasnt there!!! Maybe U.S. version music??
(i beg of you whats that music??!!?? i cant stop listening that loop! :)))
Love this episode! Interesting fact: There was in fact a Japanese game for Super Famicom called "Jelly Boy" released by Sony Imagesoft. Entirely different from the European release. The Japanese Jelly Boy came to America as our Smart Ball!
Hey what's the name of the end credit's song?
Really cool episode, I laughed at the beginning when Dave said that europe is the only place where PAL was used. :D
Some games that did not get North-American release are:
Donald Duck in Deep Duck Trouble for Master System, it was released only in europe and brasil.
Greetz from Europe ;). Love the Snatcher shirt btw! Another classic!
And another great episode.
I adore that you guys put in Apidya and Turrican III music (at least their CD renditions).
Awesome music picks in this episode. Meadow's Edge from Apidya is one of my favourite tracks, and that particular remix is my favourite version!
