Pink Floyd’s seminal work ‘Echoes’ was created by the band in a conscious desire to use a freeform jamming approach to composing new material. Accordingly they ended up with more than 20 pieces of music, of which this is one. All the pieces were originally called ‘Nothing’, and the collation therefore ‘Nothing, Parts 1-24’, followed by ‘Son Of Nothing’ and ‘Return of the Son of Nothing;’ before Roger Waters’ lyrics were added and the final work dubbed ‘Echoes’.
The famous ‘ping’ at the start of this piece was retained for the final version of Echoes, and was created by running an acoustic piano through a Leslie rotating speaker cabinet, more commonly used in conjunction with a Hammond organ.
Credits:
Composed by David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters & Richard Wright
Produced by Pink Floyd
Recorded as part of the ‘Meddle’ sessions, 1971
Animation by Ian Emes
Creative Director Aubrey Powell/Hipgnosis
Aubrey Powell notes:
After a chance meeting with Ian Emes he showed me some experimental animated film that he had been working on many years ago in the 1970's. It had not been seen before and so I decided to try, with a bit of editing by Benny Trickett and some re- telecine restoration, whether it might work with ‘Nothing Part 14’.
It somehow fits beautifully into the rhythm of the piece and reflects the brilliant nature of Emes’ imaginative and painstaking animation. He was responsible for the famous Clocks film for 'Time' and a piece called French Windows for Pink Floyd's 'One Of These Days', shown on their famous circular screen.

Imagine the atmosphere in those long jam sessions. It must have been surreal, out of this world.
Absolutely gorgeous in every way.
Meddle NEEDS an Immersion Set treatment.
All 24 Nothings,
Son of Nothing,
and
Return of the Son of Nothing...
Let's have it.
ALL of it.

+ The Embryo Live at the BBC 1971
Schwertfisch13 Good News...Embryo ‘71 at the BBC is already available.
It’s on the early years compilation called
Reverber/ation.
When I first started listening to Pink Floyd in 1971, they were considered an "underground" band and the general public had never heard of them. The fact that they are so famous now still blows my mind, because they created their own music genre.
They had a #1 album in 1970.
Yeah and even their first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn was at the center of the Swinging London. The may not have reached stratospheric heights until Dark Side of the Moon, but still had significant notoriety even from the Syd Barrett era
In that time Moody blues, Who, Kinks, Clapton, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep purple...etc Were the big stars, Pink Floyd was an outsider band (underground culture) flowed by small number of fans considered as "intellectuals".
Man, I just love this band
SORRY I knew PF since 1968!! they play on radio in FRANCE and we can eard them the night from europe 1 france inter !!! I REMEMBER it was extraordinaire..
In my Spotify playlist, this plays right before Echoes starts. It's such a good transition, I recommend anyone trying it. Feels like I'm preparing myself for something bigger.
yo that's smart
Bigger? What could possibly be bigger than echoes and this one together? Nothing! I tell ya
One of the greatest riffs of all time. Pure Psychedelia.
My favorite Floyd era is the 1967-1973 (including Dark Side). The sound they created is so unique and astonishing, and when I think the major role Rick used to have in this period the more I'm impressed what a genius this man was. Of course, it was the unparalleled chemistry between all the group that made they sound so amazing, and don't get me wrong - I love Waters powerful lyrics, but the melody in the early years is like nothing else in the world (or space for that matter). It's what really gets me.
frosnehav damn I feel the same way dude. I love this unique, psychedelic yet not totally prog, early sound they had. I love their other stuff, but this has a special place in my heart.
wright was to pink floyd what manzarek was to the doors, everyone thinks about the lyrics but the piano hits on a subconscious level, neither could be great by themselves but without them it wouldnt have worked
My favourite is close to yours😀65-72...plus Wish you were Here and Animals(rather ferocious for Floyd), as 2 tracks were nearly on WYWH...from memory i think 'Got to be Crazy' became Dog's, and 'Ranting and Raving' became Sheep. 3 Pigs was added which is about 7Os British Politics. Blah blah, I also like some bits of Dark Side and bits of The Wall.👍
Same brother same
Well said
I am very grateful that the Floyd has their own youtube channel and are making new videos. Pure magic.
Agreed!
yet they got so many good songs and live jams banned offa youtube. dont see why that was necessary.
everything is in the early years box selling in Amazon
Helium Road This is a channel by UA-cam
Potato, that isn't true. This is the band's official channel.
How can people have disliked this rare form of art and music?
I was just thinking that. How can 11 people dislike this?
It keeps rising as well, its at 18 now.
DmAssOu 24 Nothings and counting.
If you don't like music like this then there's something fucking wrong with you.
This isn't an opinion.
It's an objective fact.
25 now. Keep looking at the glass 1% empty :(....... 8)
Jason Lefler Well idk if theres something wrong with them, i guess they just dont appreciate good music man.
Pink Floyd - one of the most beautiful stories of my life.
Same here!
I live in the Pink Floyd universe
I absolutly love Floyd. I love all of their songs. I hate it though when people say they love Floyd and they say their favorite song is Comfortably Numb or Wish you Were Here and all the other ones u hear on the radio. Its the Floyd that the radio dont play that I truly love.
This is great that all these new vids & versions are being released. Only the Pink Floyd would have a part 14 of of a song titled nothing!
There were 24 Nothings
Rick, Roger, Dave, Nick- Thanks for this.
❣️❣️❣️
Richard Wright was the creative genius behind Echoes.
That's why he's my favorite of the band
The best band of the all time!!!!!!!!!!

The best of the all time band of the all of the time band ! Of all time. Band.
You happen to have all the other "Nothings" as individual tracks before they were morphed into the epic that is Echoes? Because this is great. Get all the "Nothings" together on one disk. I'd love to hear how these 24 different pieces sounded before they became Echoes.
Vel0city Yeah, there's still too much stuff in the vaults. I'd like to hear ALL of it, too.
Vel0city
I usually get fatigued with how much unreleased material bands release. But, Pink Floyd somehow never seems to let me down
nothing is something
Is everything
They are all great musicians. Including, Nick, Rick, David, Roger and Syd.
Pink Floyd is one of those bands that has an interesting story with so many songs that every fan would be happy that they would release every single thing they have recorded.
Mind blown. Rick is Echoes.
yeah
bob marlins that's why david gilmour said he would never be able to play echoes without richard.
Which is why Rick is the one I admired the most.
Unfortunately, Waters didn't...
Costin DRAGHIA And thus history was made.
amazing tune for listening in the dark, just before a sleep
Exactly what I do when I listen to Echoes :)
FLAME-XIII is that like Tor?
wow.....as do I..! It's startling when you realize you aren't alone in an unusual habit.. :)
This song ("Nothing Part 14") and the studio version of "Care With That Axe, Eugene" off of Relics have become the two songs I listen to over and over before I sleep. That version of "Careful..." is so restrained and subtle and it works great with Nothing Part 14 to help achieve a bliss like state.
Nothing (part 14) unusual about that... 😏
Ladies and Gentlemen Pink Floyd, the Music for many but not for everyone ...
maybe dont works on donkeys, feel u pround of ur music taste (:
Pink Floyd is not for everyone. Ask your doctor if Pink Floyd may be right for you. Side effects include enlightened perspective on life, the universe, and everything, audiophilia, and bliss. Frequent use of Pink Floyd may lead to addiction.
About 15 years ago I treated myself to buying the Echoes CD. Echoes on side B was a total shock & surprise unique one of a kind creation, I even bought a new expensive SONY diskman.
Listening to this version is almost like discovering Echoes for the first time.
Thank you PF.
Echoes at Pompeii got me into the Floyd.I was 55.I’ve heard them on the radio since high school but being into heavy metal bands I never paid attention.the echoes video grabbed me and so I devedbdeeoerbinto their works and found plenteous joy and peace there.thanks pink!
Ahhhh... The creation of Echoes!!!! Lovely...
The creation of echoes. Lovely...
Now this is a piece of history, right here. So nice to take a listen into the origins of one of my favorite Floyd songs. Seriously, thank you guys so much for making this box set.
im 16years old, from Malaysia and this is super fucking awesome!!!!! i keep repeat this. A LOT OF LOVE FROM MALAYSIA! 💕
5 years ago and I'm just now hearing this?!! It's the birth of echoes, my favorite piece, in the creation stage. Now I've got to find more
Am I dead? Is this heaven?
you are! and this may be!:)
MinorCirrus This is what I asked myself when I 1st heard Nothing !
your alive, this is heaven
Heaven on Earth !
Of course your not
It’s amazing to know how much the final work - Echoes is such a polished piece of art
Does anybody else feels like this could have easily appeared on "The Endless River"? You know, the sound of this guys just jamming was quite magic, and they didn't shown it to us always, because of their perfectionism in the post-production department.
Marco Salas Música I think endless river was the unreleased division bell tracks. if they did an album of unreleased tracks it probs be 12 hours long lol
I honestly think endless River sounded more like a Pink Floyd album than division Bell
This track proves why richard write was the most important member in the group
I don't think Pink Floyd has an "important" member, they're just puzzle pieces that fits together and makes this beautiful piece of art.
Someone should kick him out the band again

Reminds me of my first listening to echoes.
I was waiting for the chord change from echoes

This is what was so marvelous in Pink Floyd music, expect/ations
A major key! Different to the album version of Echoes
It's amazing, if I wasn't at work I would cry.
i noticed that too. it was so strange-sounding after 30+ years of loving this song.
i like this a lot and this is only my second listen
Yes, I noticed it right away too.
And amazingly, it's more interesting with first chord being major one.
Love love love that there's still a deep mine of music contained in the vaults. Very familiar, yet new, material from the classic era. Thank you for releasing this.
Nothing better than stumbling upon some unheard music from Pink Floyd. True bliss. Wright was one of, if not the best keyboardists of all time. Mason's cymbals are fantastic as well.
The are all great musicians. Including Nick, Rick, David, Roger and Syd. Yes indeed, Echoes must be inspired by this tune. Top
Amazing, as always ❤❤❤
We are waiting for Echoes live in Pompeii full video clip official version because there's not that on youtube.
Umur Çeşmeci Just buy the entire Live at Pompeii, it costs 5$ on Amazon....
Hvala brati moj, when amazon acces my country, I'll buy it
I was really hoping to hear David's riff. Maybe it was worked out later. But i really would have enjoyed to listen that riff in this work in progress.
Yeah, the riff is badly needed
it's just that it sounds so epic!
Joaquín Velázquez I have a feeling that the riff segment is called
Return of the Son of Nothing.
It has to be released at some point.
It needs to be released, if not we riot!
Joaquín Velázquez Right on!
When I first heard Echoes from Meddle, I was transfixed! This has the same effect all over again! I think its organs with beautiful effects! Rick certainly deserves to be remembered as an important part of Pink Floyds Creativity. His music from 1969 to late 70's was far ahead of its time. even before Moog synthesizers! One great solo song I heard by him from his 1996 "Broken China" Album, was: his 2nd last track, "Along The Shoreline!"
Sempre avanti cosi Pink Floyd, un saluto dalla provincia di Ferrara (Italy)
I prefer this to the build up in the original. This feels more triumphant and enlightening. Now just imagine the little keyboard solo and the key change
Absolutely gorgeous and amazing !!! I can't stop listening to it. That was real music !!!
Rick Wright, thank you!
Knowing Echoes so well, there were many times I kept expecting this original to kick in, notably Mason's killer drum work. FABULOUS!
Nick Mason's drum work is absolutely killer indeed. Many of those fills have become as much a part of the song in my mind as the guitar riff, or the lyrics.
given that we are praising Nick's work, I absolutely love his soubtlety on the drums, uncomplicated fills, and his way of dancing on the cymbals. hahahaha
a different flavour of echoes, unexpected chord changes. brilliant
C'est la Vie. I love the way early Floyd tells a story, every beginning has an end. An endless conversation where every tangent has a viable point.
Why can't I put several thumb up for every time I listen to Nothing !
God it's so great.
What a delight!! Pink Floydelight, totally
La mejor Banda del mundo y de todos los tiempos PINK FLOYD!
Probably his best work after Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
When someone asks me how after 45 years I'm still listening to PF, I invite them to listen to these songs.
Just incredible. Thank you so much Rick.
Sounds like echoe, thanks pink Floyd you're all genius in music.from Philippines.
Grande Pink Floyd, com suas belas aparições..
Holy wow. The original part they used is one of my favourite parts of music, this is sublime!!
Oh My God.... I am sixteen again. Thank you so much!
There's a wonderful combination of 'Echoes' and the ending section of Kubrick's '2001'. It matches so well that that I'm thinking Floyd was inspired by the film.
the genius of Pink Floyd, breaking new ground with each successive release...
Amazing, Just in my heart, and soul. I LOVE it.
Groupe extraordinaire et inégalable. Musique comme il n'y en a plus !
bien hecho me gusto. pink floyd seguira siendo grande
Amazing lovely song 😍
makes me want to listen to echoes!
Saved for the ultimate grand finale!
Beautiful!
Man Echoes could have been an entire separate album if they wanted.
switching between major and minor is amazing
this song is what being born feels like
This is great! Just when I thought floyd had entertained me more than it could!
Have to say this though, the Hammond is played through a Leslie speaker, the echoes piano strike is played through a binson echo unit.
Floyd geekiness done.
favorite Band
Es LA MEJOR BANDA DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS! ME ENCANTA!
Saludos desde Ecuador lunes 14 de November Del 2016.
Hora: 19:47 pm
Interesting how they decided to ditch that major chord and keep it minor for the final version, saving the big major key resolution for its appearance in the verse. Having the major so early blows the tension away. The fact that they seem to have seen that, and opted to keep the emergence into the light of the major for the verse (which occurs on 'no-one sings me lullabies') is nice evidence of the band's architectonic overview as they put Echoes together.
It's as if I've had already listen to this in a past life.
Excellent! Meddle is such a great work!!
the mighty floyd strikes again.they really succesfully progressed at this stage in their career.
Incredible.
This is incredible. They really have to be genius to create a melody like this. This surrounds me and I caught myself completely into the tune. And Gerald Scarf animations fit here so fine! I love these brilliant minds.
This just takes me into another realm with headphones on.
We need pink floyd again!!! 💜💚😍
WOW! That was awesome! One of the most interesting videos I have ever seen! Also have to say that one of the characters kind of scared me but it’s fine! I love Pink Floyd! Awesome job!
Pink Floyd: força criativa em expansão.
listen to the spaces between the notes. R.I.P. rick, love your organ.
Thank you so much for releasing this tonight. Amazing!
Timeless music
Incredible magic sound!
Amazing, excellent information on how Echoes would be finished, I'm always interested to know how these musical wonders were created, but never imagine that it would be more than 20 pieces until adding the lyrics and completing what is the final cut. Thank you for the information, greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
NOBODY compares to Floyd! And that's an understatement!
This is awesome to hear. I've never heard any of these, but I can tell what was used and wasn't. To say I missed my time in history is sorely an understatement. Sit around all day, get stoned and listen through jam sessions for any hint of a track I could piece together would have been heaven to me. It's essentially what I did in my first real band. Only I had the luxury of a computer to do my editing. I've always admire these folks from back in the day when all they had to work with was tape. The sometimes agony, but pure bliss that came from editing this stuff. Thank you for sharing.
Uma das melhores bandas do mundo!!! ❤
Pink Floyd grazie mille di esistere
Celestial music
ECHOES "DEMO" ...FANTASTIC!!!!
Thanks Dave!
Está para nascer uma banda tão maravilhosa como o Pink Floyd ❤❤❤
Whoa, anybody else get goosebumps listening to this?
im not going to say much about, but what a musicians!!!! with the respect for those, us, whom likes Vivaldi, please dont misunderstand me: my thinking is that as a creator is more easy develop the concept of "rain" for example, than this human experience that seems undescribable... and theres is a song about that... best band ever, so far.
Bellissimo!
questa musica arriva a toccare i punti più irraggiungibili della mia anima!!!!
this is just BEAUTIFUL...
no words...
Esta es la prueba de que aún tendrán que pasar muchas décadas para que una banda de rock puedan acercarse Pink Floyd.
