      @@hammertlme This was the true premise of the show, although it took them two seasons to actually come out and say it. And they wouldn't have chosen this course if they didn't intend to solve it within an acceptable timeframe in the show. I am fairly certain it would be the underlying message within the show and it would go on like.. well.. kinda like Star Trek Voyager. Their mission WAS to get home, but it was just what drove the show forwards. It was the adventures WHILE doing that which made it worth watching. It would probably be the same here. And in the end, they would discover what they were there for. Underwhelming or not is irrelevant.

    I urge anyone who didn't give this show a proper try to try again. The second season of this show showed such potential, and the final 10 episodes are some of the best Stargate I've seen. Killed right when it was getting great. 9 years later we're no closer to anything new from the franchise. How MGM have handled this is nothing short of diabolical. They won't let someone like Flanigan buy the franchise, but they also won't doing anything with it themselves.. now I see why my grandfather quit the company all those years ago.

    This scene works on so many levels. This is the end of a long arc of antagonism between Rush and Young, but more generally, Rush and the rest of the crew. From day one, Rush didn't believe anyone else on board was even remotely qualified to help him explore Destiny, let alone set about accomplishing its mission once he learned it. The Rush who stepped onto the Destiny for the first time is not the same man who is standing here, in this scene, humbly asking his shipmates to embark on this journey with him. Part of that change was seeing others step up to the plate in ways he didn't think possible. Most of it, I think, was (spoiler alert) the death of Riley, something that happened as a direct result of Rush trying to go it alone.
    As much as some characters change, some also stay the same. Notice how Greer, without hesitation, volunteers to stay at his Colonel's side. Loyalty and duty, these aren't just euphemisms to Greer, these are his defining attributes.
    The writers of this show understood character, something missing from most television dramas these days. And wow, the patience. Examine the patience it takes to draw out a character arc over two seasons. It can't be stated enough, this is one of the finest television shows ever made.

    • @Rocksteady72a

      Seeing these arcs resolved in such a fulfilling way through the two seasons is one of the reasons I love the show, although conversely it's one of the main detractors for many as well. The show took its time, and it was long enough for many viewers to give up on the show :(

There was, and still is, a handful of very loud malcontents, but their critiques never held up to even the mildest of scrutiny and were never widely accepted. To this day, a tiny minority of people have similar complaints about the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica. While any sane person will acknowledge the reboot far exceeds the pitiful source material, a very angry cadre still complains they didn't get the show they wanted back. TNG also had loud opponents. These sad and pitiful individuals will always exist - but never imagine they are anything of significance.

    • @jaffarebellion292
      @jaffarebellion292 4 роки тому +1

      @@erentheca I loved the premise of the show. But it started off bad. The gratuitous sex scenes, Chloe's entire character, some VERY uncomfortable moments with the communication stones, and rather disgusting portrayal of the military turned me off to the show at first. I did come back and watch the whole thing, but if they'd crunched the first season down to about half its existing length it would've been received better. Keep in mind I'm not one of those people who hated it just because they cancelled Atlantis for it. Atlantis was starting to slip and a sixth season of that would probably have been just as bad as the first season of SGU.
      There was also some dubious things like the Lucian Alliance suddenly becoming more than dirt under the boot of the planet that defeated the Goa'uld, the Replicators, a half-ascended System Lord with the knowledge of the ancients, AND THE FRIGGIN' ORI! This is late-era Stargate. Earth are literal god slayers. And you expect me to believe a couple of relatively garbage-tier Ha'taks could last longer than a few seconds against a ship that at this point in the series could sink an Ori mothership in four shots? If the Alliance were smart, they'd run for the hills at the mere mention of a BC-304. There are nonsensical things like this all over the first season. And in a show with serialized progression, these are mistakes you can't afford to make.
      Stargate Universe needed another go around the table in the writing room before anything hit the screen. To offer another example, the show hammers you with emotional moments before you can even figure out who these characters are, let alone endear yourself to them. The audience either needs time to care about these people, or something to latch onto right off the bat. Take a whole episode and set it on Icarus. Establish what "normal" is to these people before throwing them to the other side of the universe, ESPECIALLY with a cast this large.
      But alas, the times when the show had its priorities straight, it got damn good, and season 2 was absolutely fantastic. It cut out the fat and got to the meat of the story. I genuinely wish they'd gotten a third season. If season 2 was as much of an improvement as it was, imagine the heights the show could've reached!

      It's a Simpsons reference. Rush always acted so contemptuous to pretty much everyone else in the crew, that I found it amusing that when dealing with himself, he was basically equally contemptuous:
      Rush: "Look, I'll go and I'll bring back the proper tools. Be careful not to touch the damaged one. About a thousand volts running through that."
      Alternate Rush (testily): "Do you think I might know that?"
      He could have literally become his own worst enemy. It just reminded me of the Simpsons' scene, especially since it came from Groundskeeper Willie: "Brothers and sisters are natural enemies. Like Englishmen and Scots! Or Welshmen and Scots! Or Japanese and Scots! Or Scots and other Scots! Damn Scots! They ruined Scotland!"
      Skinner: "You Scots sure are a contentious people."

      @Aharit 7 років тому +5

      Okay, so they dial the gate to Earth. On Earth's side, the standard protocol would be to close the iris until it was confirmed friendlies were coming through the gate. The argument was that since radio signals can't be transmitted over a 9 chevron address, there would be no usual way to send an IDC. After re-watching the clip, though, I seem to have missed the part where he states "Eli has warned them to expect us" so they likely used the stones for that purpose, and I'm guessing they'd either have set up a certain time frame when the iris wouldn't automatically close, or they'd use the stones as confirmation for who's coming through.

    Wait, Destiny has been in flight for around 1 million years, yet Rush and some people think "hey, we could get there any minute." The mission is not pointless, but to think they could reach what they're looking for in the remainder of their lifetime is a bit silly.
    I haven't watched the whole show... but is there a flaw in my reasoning?

    • @jackoniell9468
      @jackoniell9468 5 років тому +12

      Kinda late with this response but I feel like this is a serious question so ill answer it anyways. Your question is exactly the point of this scene. The crew have no idea what the background radiation is, when they will reach it, or even if it is something that is physically reachable. It could be a mystery that takes in another million years to answer or something they can find out within a year. The only thing that is for certain is that if they leave then there is a 100% chance they will never find out. However, even if it will take the ship another million years to reach its destination that doesn't mean that the crew would be wasting their time by staying on the ship. Even if they will never reach the background radiation in their lifetime, the best way to continue research on this is to stay aboard the ship. You gotta remember the crew on board Destiny are in a part of space that the Ancients themselves never even got to explore. The whole point of the Stargate Program throughout the three series is to send people to as many places as possible to explore in order to learn new things, gain new experiences, and possibly acquire new medicines, skills, and technologies to better earth and the human race, and while this was not the ideal group of people to take on this particular mission, the things the crew learns out here across the universe still has potential to better life on earth.

    This could be explanied by older design but couldnt there be some way of a bridge that used to connect earth and pegasus in sga? I bet mckay and carter could do something using atlantis database and godlike asgard computer. Also the latter, they could materialize pretty much anything with that. Materialize new naquadria planet and send supplies!) and a copy of said computer with a set of instructions and you could restore destiny.

      Col. Telford was the only person to make it back to earth. The rest of the crew were sent back millions of years in time. They eventually built a society that was far more advanced than we are now. Perhaps even to the level of the Asgard or the Ancients. All of this is explained in the episode Epilogue which in my opinion may be in the top ten episodes of all three Stargate series. Highly recommend you watch it, although I would say the episode is in some ways the second part of a two part episode so I recommend you watch the episode before that one called "Common Decent" before watching "Epilogue". Also this scene from SGU is called "Twin Destinies."

    i love stargate universe..but the whole premise of it is completely ruined due to the established fact that ascension is a thing..
    And not just something that the ancients did, but something that has been done again and again in stargate by humans, not to mention all the tech and info that exists to achieve ascension (from the ancients)
    So the whole "finding the truth of the universe" gets completely ruined when you can simply try to ASCEND, using the tons of preexisting knowledge, tech, and FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE (Daniel jackson) and instead acquire ALL the knowledge and TRUTH you could ever want, by ascending.
    Rather than put all your hopes on this random mission that may or may not be a false dud. Or even could be unachievable to reach by human standards. or EVEN, the whole "truth" ends up being something small, and not as meaningful as they make it up to be..

    • @BYERE
      @BYERE 4 роки тому +1

      You have to keep in mind that Destiny wasn't originally built to find "the truth of the universe". It was a seeding ship, creating and placing stargates on habitable worlds (creating the Gate Network) so that the Ancients could inhabit these new places.
      They likely built the ship for that main purpose, after which they detected this other civilisation from the beginning of time and worked on heading towards it, converting Destiny-class ships into multi-generational ships (ie, the cryo-stasis pods, the regenerative energy supply by flying through stars, etc) to allow them to built a gate network towards this other civilisation so that all their people could visit and learn from this primordial species and/or their ruins.
      However, in the time it took them to do all this, they realised it's something that couldn't be achieved easily in a thousand lifetimes, so they lost interest and left Destiny to go on its own programming, with no way or reason to retrieve it. Instead, they focused on knowledge and the attainment of ascension.
      Basically, they did exactly how you said... It STARTED as work towards the goal of finding this other intelligent life, but gave up when they learned about and achieved ascension. SGU is setting lore from LONG before what SG-1 and Atlantis is based on.

    • @patham9

    • @tungstenkid2271
      @tungstenkid2271 5 років тому

      Yes at least Rush finally admitted he wanted to fulfil Destiny's "true mission" of finding "god" or whoever, instead of trying to do it behind their backs like before.....:)....PS- We saw his untrustworthiness right from episode one where he tried to pin the blame on Eli for his own failure to unlock the 9th quadrant- "Eli you might want to re-check your calculations", and Eli said "Not my fault!"...Young heard the exchange and no doubt realised that Rush would have to be watched from then on.

    • @tungstenkid2271
      @tungstenkid2271 5 років тому

      I've got the boxed DVD set to analyse, and its hard to determine exactly how many of them want to go back to earth, it all depends who's got loved ones on earth, and who hasn't..Rush and Eli for example have got nobody, so staying with Destiny is naturally their preferred choice.
