i think..it was a great show..on its own. not in the stargate franchise. People (i admit i am one of those people) went there and expected the same like in SG1 and SGA the carefree humour the teamspirit and so on, but instead got this disfunctional group of stranded people with soap opera problems (in only remember some meaningless sex and unrequieted love theme at the beginning, from the last time i watched it). It might have changed for the better later on, but lots of people had already turned off their tv at that point, and i think that broke SGU's back.
looking at this scene here, i can tell that i would have enjoyed it.
Even if it was inside the Stargate universe...just...a different way of delivering it would have been great.

Connor Moore agreed! first they kill SG-1, Then Atlantis, then we get 2.5 of a 5 season SGU series. the guys making SGU even said they begged Syfy too give them 1 more season, so they could at least tie up the loose ends. but Nope, had too make room for wrestling! Then they killed the Atlantis movie SGA: Extinction. after that SG: Alliance the video game was killed. there were 2 more but I can't recall their names.

The irony here is this is how fans and SyFy saw the show.... in different ways. Rush, like the fans, wanted somthing big, deep and meaningful. Young, like SyFy... didn't... they just wanted the simpler stuff.

The plot of this show was about the show itself. A ship (like the series) was on its way towards a great, unknown goal, with characters thrown into an unknown environment (like the viewers). In Season 2, the hostile drones represented Syfy's TV executives trying to cancel Destiny without reason or purpose. When they developed shields for Destiny, the hostile drones flung themselves into the ship still damaging it. The characters in the end became suspended, not knowing what the future held, just like the viewers.
The more you think about this show, the more you realise how it represented what was happening to the show itself.

The ancients are the first version of humanity. They built the ship. They ascended to a level where they can observe and influence what happens. They created the humanity we see. In other words they are the writers. And the viewers. The plot of the show is to find out the story piece by piece. The ship was launched long ago with the original movie. The story has been suspended for now until eventually it gets reawakened and eventually the full meaning of the stargate universe is revealed. It is their destiny.

OK, that makes sense, but why was the life support system - air recycle system - shot when they got on board. I would have thought that all the non-essential systems would have been shut down till the Ancients gated aboard. I would also have thought that the Ancients would have build in a self repair system to take care of any damage that might have occurred during the trip. Lastly there should be a way to gate back to earth once they reached the end of the mission. Just thinking. Perhaps those things would have been revealed during the later parts of the series.

I find it difficult to believe that a race as old and as advanced as the Ancients would not have had some type of repair system on board that would keep things in working order. I would also think that they would have some machines that would make the essentials that they needed. - like food, where would they get the food and water unless the machines on board made it. All that was needed was to find the on switch for the repair and replication devices and Destiny would be up and running at full capacity.

I always had some theories on how this ends or how this should end properly, but no one of them were having a reaching-God end. Here’s some of interesting (IMO) scenarios of ending SGU.
    1) The Ancients already gathered their missing pieces using Destiny's researches and it just floats around without being repaired by bots and some other stuff that's really needed in a million-year-spaceship with such an important mission. That explains a lot, but is a more realistic and a less interesting scenario.
    2) The ship was not intended to be a taxi which takes you to the God. The Ancients created it to inspire civilizations for researches and uniting in a great intergalactic society not for wars. And Rush would find that but would delete the evidences to maintain the secret for the greater good. And tell about that ship to everyone for everyone in the ship's way to repair it a bit by a bit, making this a never-ending inspiring and most importantly a uniting galaxies story.
    3) Something made the crew not wanting to go home. Like temporal anomaly which made them travel far ahead in time (and broke the communication stones). And they moved to read the archives and really understand and really start to believe in the Mission. The ship’s sensors registered that and Destiny automatically send info to the Ascended Ancients, which have materialized into the ship and showed them DA WAY so they could Ascend and decide their own destiny. So someone joined the Ancients, someone just went home and told the others DA WAY.
    BUT
Here I split this scenario into 2 ways:
    a) The Ascension would be just another step of granting possibilities to really gain information about that signal and how to do the semi-god things like forming the primordial matter with the special energies into the things you need (like wizards idk).
    b) The Ascension opens a new dimension with hundreds of different civilizations of godlike creatures split into some ideological houses/clans which control different parts of space/time/dimensions. And here starts a some really other storyline.

Most of the time, science fiction shows are marketed at action/adventure shows. That's what Star Trek was, that's what Babylon 5 was (to a certain extent), that's what Battlestar Galactica was (in it's first incarnation; not sure about the 2nd), that's what Firefly was and that's what SG-1 and Atlantis was. I loved all those shows, but the writers/producers decided to experiment with making a sci fi shows not as action/adventure, but as drama. That's what Universe was. Unfortunately, the fans didn't understand that and expected it to be another action/adventure show. As Connor Moore states, this had the *potential* to be a mind-blowing show because it basically dealt with science and interpersonal relationships. Look at all the long-running shows on TV: the CSI franchise, the NCIS franchise, Boston Legal, all those medical shows, House, ER, St. Elsewhere etc. etc. All of those shows are considered to be drama shows, not Action/adventure. Why can't science fiction shows also be looked on as potential drama?

My own theory is about destiny is sort of like one of it's episodes. In the end they travel back in time to seed the universe and become the ancients. They are the ones that plant the signal. There is no second evolution. Which also leads reason as to why the ascended ancients have a hands off policy.

The show had potential, but it was ruined by the ridiculous communication stones and the terrorist raid at the end of season 1. These elements completely destroyed the sense of being lost in an unknown region of space, millions and millions light years away from Earth, when the main characters could magically swap bodies with people on Earth (for boring filler episodes by the way) and visit their friends and family... or when some rogue Milky Way organization can just use the Stargate to attack the ship at any time. For me, this show should've cut all ties with the whole Milky Way, the moments the characters stepped foot on Destiny and just focus entirely on survival, exploration of the unknown, the alien race that was chasing the ship, and the mysterious structures discovered in some of the planets visited by the crew. Atlantis did a way better job at this, with the only exception that the characters weren't lost, and they obviously couldn't cut ties with the Milky Way entirely, because Earth ships could still travel the distance.

it was sad that it went down like that. In my opinion it had huge potential. With an even more ancient and powerful civilization than the Ancients we knew. It was a good try to come back to the SG1 we know nothing and take on the big fishes Stargate vibe. It was a good idea since in the Milkiway and Pegasus Galaxies the Tauri had become a force to be reckoned with. And it wasn't too bad of an idea to show aus some kind of middle Avancement state of the ancients one that seems to be in between the Tauri now and the Pegasus Lanteans. All cool ideas but as good as the setup was as bad was the Team. Rush was a way too negative Mckay and we leaked the typical Oneil/Shepard character. I never truly felt home with the SGU Team unlike with all previous teams. I think that was it what killed it in the end.

  • @TheTrailburner
    @TheTrailburner 3 роки тому +8

Since we were robbed of a season finale, allow me to theorize what might have happened.
The final season has created a dilemma with the revelation that despite the immense distance it had traveled since launching thousands of years ago, Destiny was still not going fast enough to complete it's missing within the the crew's lifespan. Even at their present course, it would still take at least 200 years for the ship to reach its final destination.
So at this point the show ends up raising a morale dilemma of whether or not to continue the quest for the greatest scientific answer of all time, as doing so would doom 3 or 4 generations of their descendants to noting more than transit generations to allow for their great grandchildren to find the answers their grandparents decided was more valuable than their own life choices. Rush of course still thinks the mission is worth it, and eventually other members of the expedition including Sgt. Greer, Chloe, Varro, Park and TJ come over to his line of thinking. Each one of them realizing their lives have more meaning on Destiny than on Earth.
Eli however believes he may have found a way to get Destiny both to its final destination AND Earth within their lifespan. By fitting Destiny with an Asgard hyperdrive to allow Destiny to enter hyperspace. And then use FTL within Hyperspace, thus theoretically allowing between galaxies with an hour. But in order to achieve this, they need a new Icarus class planet to make the connection to Destiny. And a new one is found within the Milky Way. The only problem however is that is under the control of the Lucian Alliance, who have amassed a gigantic armada rivalling that of the System Lords, and have even been able to retrofit their ships with Ori weaponry. Even worse is that they have surviving Goa'uld among their ranks.
Stargate Command however is reluctant to risk their fleet going head-on into a potential slaughter. Not to mention that they would know their arrival would force the Lucian Alliance to dial Destiny, potentially causing the planet to explode and take out the Tau'ri fleet. Eli however makes a remarkable discovery that not even the Ancients knew was possible: The ability to reverse dial a Stargate. By inserting a specially made virus into Destiny's dialling computer. It would be possible to change an incoming wormhole to an outgoing wormhole, while still ensuring that the gate is still being powered by the Icarus class planet.
This plan allows for the Tau'ri to bait the Lucian Alliance into dialing Destiny, by launching a full scale attack on the planet. The LA do attempt to dial Destiny, but Eli's virus works. Not only does it reverse the polarity of the wormhole, but Eli is able to remotely embed a unique code to prevent the planet's core on the other end from going critical. So the final battle would see Carter leading the Hammond, Daedalus, Odyssey and Sun Tsu against the Lucian Alliance Fleet, while Young, Scott, James and Greer, lead a team on foot into the Lucian Alliance base to take their foe out from within.
The battle is long, but Carter realizes they're outgunned, due to the Lucian Alliance having access to Ori weapons. Scott is able to disable the Lucian Alliance's Anti-beaming shield, allowing for Telford and his team to beam down to the Lucian gate room along with the Asgard Hyperdrive and two ZPM's. They able to redial Destiny, Young and Scott however are reluctant to return to the Destiny. At this point in the story, Scott has had a falling out with Chloe, who's developed feelings for Eli. He and Young stay behind to prevent the Lucian Alliance from following Telford's team through the gate. They're both killed defending it. They also disable Eli's code, causing the planet to explode, and taking out what is left of the Lucian Alliance. Carter is able to jump away with the Hammond and Daedalus. However the Odyssey and Sun Tzu fall in battle.
One week later, Destiny is now retrofitted with the Asgard hyperdrive which is powered by the ZPMs, while FTL engines are powered by Destiny's power reserves, they conduct a test flight of activating FTL within Hyperspace. The first trip makes them realize they travelled into the void between galaxies in less than a minute. Meaning that Destiny now has to the means to travel to Earth. Partway through the trip however, it is discovered that the astronomical speed the ship is traveling is causing its internal structure to buckle. Yet Telford insists on pressing on to Earth despite Rush's objections. It takes a full year, but they arrive in Earth's orbit, right in the middle of a battle with the Lucian Alliance. The Tau'ri and Free Jaffa fleets are struggling to hold on. Destiny is able to turn the tide of the battle, taking out the remaining Lucian vessels but she sustains critical damage during the fight. Eventually losing sublight engines and crashing on the Moon.
Destiny's crew has returned home, but they failed to complete a million year old mission. Not all is lost however. As in the moment of sorrow, the Ancients finally break their ascension rules and decide to assist humanity. As they learn that the knowledge from Destiny's mission is too important to abandon. They retrofit the George Hammond with a top of the line FTL drive, allowing it to continue Destiny's mission. However they also inform the Tau'ri that even with the new speed. It will still take them at least 20 years to reach their final destination. While most of the Destiny crew choose to return to Earth. Many of its notable crew members including Rush, Eli, Chloe & Greer decide to travel with the Hammond back to the point in which Destiny left off. They have also now picked up some new notable crew members: Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, Rodney McKay & Jennifer Keller. The series ends with the Hammond making its final voyage into the depths of the Universe. The crew knowing full well, they may not live long enough to see Earth ever again.

Two: the gate onboard Destiny wasn't ever powerful enough to use all seven symbols for intergalactic (i.e., back to Earth, or to Atlantis in the Pegasus galaxy) because the ship had aged so much since it was built. But that problem could be overcome; when Destiny recharged itself while flying through a sun's corona, THAT would have been a perfect time to dial up a gate that was close, and use it to get back to Earth. The ship's systems and logs (once Rush deciphered the codes to access them) would have had that information; along with any ships that seeded Stargates along its' flightpath. It was build around the Star Gates? How? Except for the initial getting on the ship the Star Gates could for a large part just as well be replaced with short range FTL shuttles. The whole concept of having a fleet of AI vessels fly in front of your manned vessel just so that your crew has a way to get off your ship, does sound overly complicated anyways.
Also considering that Star Trek had the Iconian gateways years before even the Star Gate movie was produced, Star Gate hardly could block all shows from using the concept of Gates to travel around.

But this science fiction, story by Rush about a message in the CBR?
Really, don't know about that. ;P

i watched Babylon 5 when i was a kid, i had this idea before...all the older races would "go beyond the rim and wait for the younger races" i always took as the rim of the universe not the galaxy... then they would either find another universe or battle some other equal but evil forces for their universe or create a new universe themselves to live in, or other dimensions if that dont work but they always sorta shunned other dimensions, because its not where they belong kinda thing.
what else do you do after whats it called...energy death or whatever. gotta start a new universe and hopefully dont explode yourselves doing it.
or at least start a new universe for someone else so things dont end(for all you know) if you cant be in it.

Very few Sci fi properties deal with a scale this large.
Star Trek barely ventures outside a quarter of our galaxy.
Star Wars plays out in only half of 1 most of the time.
Stargate Atlantis went to a new galaxy.
Stargate Universe does it's name justice...............they fly around throughout the known universe.
Billions and billions of light years.
    now that's a fascinating premise.

I loved this show.... but I found so many flaws in Rush's ideas and premises! I saw nothing but self-adolation and pride in him! Why keep so many secrets? If he was CONVINCED it was the ultimate responsibility of the crew to complete Destiny's mission.... why didn't he reveal the bridge to the crew when he first discovered it? Why didn't he bring Col. Young, Eli, and everyone else in, once he'd broken the codes of the ship, and accessed its' entire logs? *He wanted to keep that information to himself; why? Because he wanted to MANIPULATE it, and turn it to his own perceptions and agenda!* Sound familiar?

The reasons why ancients abandoned destiny is because of the discovery and research into ascension they wouldn't have a need for a ship to learn what's at the end of the ships destination because once they ascended they gained the knowledge of the universe without the need for technology

The show was very well produced and entertaining, but too many episodes were "ship-bound" meaning there was not enough gating down to explore exciting new planets, perhaps that's why viewing figures dropped of in series two.

During its run on SyFy, which was a premium cable channel of all things, the show was moved around the schedule a lot. When MGM went into bankruptcy protection, SyFy did not pick up the show for a third season.

networks could care less what the fans watch. a good complex story doesnt appeal to the masses like brainless comedies and predictable drama does,, thats thats why this show was cancelled... cost too much for the few of us that understand it to make... the mindless drones that watch tv shows have no interest in a good sci fi show

Such a cool concept. I would have loved to see this series concluded. The problem was that while it was good Sci-Fi it was not good Stargate. The previous 15 seasons of Stargate had developed a particular style and character all it's own. Then they throw it all out for this emotional, swiveling camera, out of focus, acoustic guitar mess. I think it's safe to say this was "The Last Jedi" of the Stargate franchise.
