    Quite interesting. It’s kind of ballroom samba very different than Brazilian one (called Gafieira). I think it’s a internacional variation of samba, ‘cause we don’t dance like that in Rio. If someone would like watch a Brazilian style search out for Gafieira.

    Samba allows me to travel down the floor with those travelling movements. If I cannot travel, I can do circular voltas and stationary batukadas nearly all day. And I can shimmy up and down, and I can even isolate the shimmies to the upper chest. That's samba!

    Amazing video. I really like the way you have details about all these Samba syllabus steps, but the pacing is also real nice. not too fast or slow. can't wait to see other beginner guides for the other dances like this one. one quesion - why is the basic call "reverse basic"? Also, how about tutorial on technique for samba walks. Thanks sooooo much.

    • @DanceInsanity
      @DanceInsanity  6 років тому +6

      Luisame great. Thanks for your feedback! 😊 The reverse basic is called that because leader starts with his left foot forward. If he starts with right foot, that'll be called a natural basic. These are all variations of the basic movement. Will add Samba walk into idea list. Any particular questions on that?

    • @luisame8471
      @luisame8471 6 років тому +5

      Thank you for the response! for samba walks, i am not sure how the knees work, as in which one is bent or straight, how to make the body look like the pro dancers such as you two. besides hving to work out. haha.

    7:37 - that footwork action with the cross, since I know "voltas" are those famous foot crosses, is called the Spot Volta. "Volta" comes from the Portuguese "voltar", which means "to turn", so "volta" means "turn."
    The "bota fogo" is my favorite samba figure. :) But there is more to this......
    There is a town in Brazil called Botafogo. The move in samba roughly means "fire boot", or "boot of fire", or "boot fire", but it was actually named for a famous artillery man in Brazil in history, called Joao Souza de Botafogo. Those quarter turns in the botafogos, hence, depict him moving the gun turret from L to R and back again during combat.

    • @DanceInsanity
      @DanceInsanity  6 років тому +6

      +Charles Smith Interesting story!! Thanks for sharing. :)
      Where are you from? What do you like about the Bota fogo?

    • @charlessmith263
      @charlessmith263 6 років тому +4

      Dance Insanity I am from Chicago. The Bota fogo reminds me of the Bota Pogo from "Strictly Ballroom"...the movie released in 1993.

    • @DanceInsanity
      @DanceInsanity  6 років тому +3

      Charles Smith it's been a long time since I saw that film... 😅 remember it is very entertaining and lots of people love it. Gotta go look that up! 👍🏼

    • @tytusbergstrom
      @tytusbergstrom 6 років тому +3

      awesome movie, Strictly Ballroom!

    • @charlessmith263
      @charlessmith263 6 років тому +4

      Now you understand after seeing that movie - that the "Bota Pogo" is actually a pun on the Bota Fogo figure. It is way beyond the basic samba steps you taught in the video, but I think from character Barry Fife's POV, and with my Marliu Henner-inspired autobiographical memory of knowing this ballroom dance movie, the Bota Pogo happens like this.....as explained by Barry Fife himself (paraphrased).
      1. You precede it with a Rolling off the Arm (full 6 steps), ending in R Shadow Position (QQS, QQS)
      2. Now to the Bota Pogo itself in R Shadow Position - Do a hip thrust forward and stop (2 movements) on "a1" (hold 2), and then a hip thrust backward and stop (2 movements) on "a3" (hold 4), and repeat these 4 movements "a1" (hold 2) "a3" (hold 4). Keep in that position throughout (I think there is no foot movement in this).
      3. End that with any PP figure or another Rolling off the Arm.
      Now everybody can "BOTA POGO" in the samba!!!!

    🚩What I've learned from my few dancing lessons (and what's not always emphasized by the dance teachers) that dancing constantly involves shifting of the body weight. And that happens whenever you change feet - from right to left. That's why it looks so wiggly in Latin dancing. In dances like waltz this shifting is also an essential element but wiggles are very subtle and subdued. A good teacher, I think, has to tell on what foot to put a body weight whenever you make next step. Just wiggling in front of the students will help only few.
