I`ve just looked at your Espana Cani phrasing downloads. Yesss! I think you may be rare among ballroom teachers in being able to analyse music so well! Thank goodness my tap teacher`s not bad at it. I played, sang and conducted for fifty years before I started dancing, so I`m always super-aware of the music. I was utterly baffled by having to dance figures in 3-time against 4-time in Rock `n` Roll. Got used to it now. Ian Marshall. UK

Hey guys. Super tutorial. Gives us a great intro into the paso doble dance. Actually, all your beginner dance guides are off the charts. Really well done, and so professional. Thanks for making these for us to learn how to dance on youtube. Although you cover so much, I feel like there is still a lot more to learn to make the steps look good. But one step at a time. Question for you. I find it hard to remember which way to turn when I'm doing the steps like the sixteen and telemark steps by myself. Any tips on that front? Thanks again
@Kamila Sithra hello! Thanks.. and you are very welcome. There is a lot to cover, for sure, but definitely one step at a time is a good philosophy. That's a very good question you have. I (LiWen) get confused too!! haha. especially if you're learning without a partner. As a follower - the step like the sixteen, you can actually dance against a wall, and think of the wall as your partner, so you will always be turning towards the wall. As for the telemark - that's a little trickier. But you basically keep turning left for the first 4 counts. Then, you have a forward walk on 5, followed by another turn to left on 6 to close your feet. So, in other words, all your turns in telemark are towards the left. I hope that is clear? Try it out!

At my dance school they don't teach us the paso doble. I wanted to learn something in my free time ans this was the perfect thing! I was wondering if you may know whether a junior level dancer can do the paso doble? Thanks for this lovely tutorial. I picked it up so fast!
My wife, Pilar, and I never learned to dance. We were both kinda Goth/Alt in High School until college when we met. (so now you know how little we knew) Since getting married we have been wanting to learn to dance. We have been learning Bachata and it works for a lot of different genres of music. We would like a more "formal" dance and we have our hearts set on Paso Doble (kind of a nod to her heritage). The problem is that most of the music we have found that matches Paso Doble is Spanish Guitar/ Traditional, etc music. I love the trad music but not a steady diet of it and it is hard to come by in most settings. We are finding it hard to find the Paso Doble phrasing in contemporary music. 1,2,3,4&5,6,7,8&1,2,3... Do you have a recommended song list featuring contemporary/classic rock where we can hear the Paso Doble easier? Are we trying to make two things go together that shouldn't? We are not competitors, we're just having fun but it would be sure nice to love her on the dance floor with her fav songs playing in the background BTW We have been practicing steps 1-5 and the separation step is similar to a step we did while still clubbing but Paso Doble is more elegant.
Hello @Finnian and Pilar! Run the World by Beyoncé is a good paso. Paso phrasing is so unique , there aren’t many contemporary songs that have that. But anyone song with a marching kind of tempo can work. You can also search for paso songs by popular tv shows, dancing with the stars or strictly come dancing.. they tend to use more contemporary tunes. Though they may not necessarily have the 4&1 rhythms, they can be fun to dance to. Glad you’re using these steps! Ole 💃🏻
@@DanceInsanity Thank you for your response. We listened to Run the World by Beyoncé to get a "modern" feel for the phrasing. We will continue to search for additional songs. I accidently found some songs that had a march feel and we were able to count out a 4&1 rhythm a surprising one one from New Order, True Faith. I think I may also buy a metronome to help us keep beat with the songs we dance to while we are learning. It is so much fun to discover this and I love the tension that is created in Paso Doble! Is it all right for the lead to do elevations in the Separation at the time the leader pushes the lady well away (after the appel), and then gradually lower the feet as the follower returns back to the leader into hold, to create a bit more theatrical effect in the paso? I already know the mantra for the Separation - on 1 - appel - on 2 3 4 - push the follower away, and 5 6 7 8 -bring the follower back to hold again.
Hey DanceinSanity! Quick question: Me and my follower are having a debate right now about the drag. She wants to go straight into the drag without appelling and taking a step forward, as you showed us in the video. I am not so great at this move when I am trying to slide for four beats. Is this correct?
Hello Michael! The Drag is like a side lunge. The way we show it is to take 4 counts to pull the free leg in. Another option is to Appel on 1 and drag for 2,3,4. Does this settle your debate? 😉
@@DanceInsanity Yes, we are! We're doing the MIT Open at bronze level, and I want to take as many latin and rhythm dances as possible, as that is what we are best at. I've been using a few of the basic guides you guys make, and they're really useful! The first competition I did with Latin, my partner and I placed fifth in Rumba, probably due in most part to you two! Thanks again for the quick responses! Just out of curiousity, are you planning on doing a Bolero tutorial (if you even dance that at all? I know you two are primarily latin dancers)? Four more questions (sorry for all these questions, I just didn't expect you two would actually respond to my comments, seeing as how you two are, like, some of the best in the world and I am very new to this): 1. In your samba routine, does it travel around the room? If it was said, I probably just missed it. 2. I saw on your website you guys do salsa. Are you planning on doing anything with salsa? 3. For the Paso, when my partner and I do it, we end with about 30 seconds left. Should we return to the beginning of the routine? 4. Do you have any tips for keeping my shoulders rolled back and me not tilting forward? I seem to have this problem a lot. Sorry for posting a short dissertation. Thanks!
Michael, great enthusiasm! Answering your questions chronological - 1. We actually do all dances 😉, but for now, are focusing on Latin dances online. We've had many requests for American rhythm dances.. so we have it on our list to put something out at some point... Bolero included. 2. Samba routine moves around the room. Start with leader facing wall.. then on promenade walks, travel down line of dance. 3. Yes to salsa! We put out a couple of salsa basic videos the last couple of weeks... For footwork Friday. 4. Paso. Yes. Restart your routine. 5. Posture... That's always a good one. Keep your chest and upper back broad for starters. Shoulder tips pulled down. Don't pinch forward or back... Find an engaged neutral. PS- In our Cha Cha challenge course, we go into details of Latin posturing with very specific exercises. Check it out. And good luck with upcoming comps!! 💪🏼👍🏼 keep us posted on your progress.

I accidently found some songs that had a march feel and we were able to count out a 4&1 rhythm a surprising one one from New Order, True Faith. I think I may also buy a metronome to help us keep beat with the songs we dance to while we are learning. It is so much fun to discover this and I love the tension that is created in Paso Doble! Thanks for everything you do for us.

Is it all right for the lead to do elevations in the Separation at the time the leader pushes the lady well away (after the appel), and then gradually lower the feet as the follower returns back to the leader into hold, to create a bit more theatrical effect in the paso?
I already know the mantra for the Separation - on 1 - appel - on 2 3 4 - push the follower away, and 5 6 7 8 -bring the follower back to hold again.

Hey DanceinSanity! Quick question: Me and my follower are having a debate right now about the drag. She wants to go straight into the drag without appelling and taking a step forward, as you showed us in the video. I am not so great at this move when I am trying to slide for four beats. Is this correct?
Hello Michael! The Drag is like a side lunge. The way we show it is to take 4 counts to pull the free leg in.
Another option is to Appel on 1 and drag for 2,3,4. Does this settle your debate? 😉

@@DanceInsanity Yes, we are! We're doing the MIT Open at bronze level, and I want to take as many latin and rhythm dances as possible, as that is what we are best at. I've been using a few of the basic guides you guys make, and they're really useful! The first competition I did with Latin, my partner and I placed fifth in Rumba, probably due in most part to you two!

Four more questions (sorry for all these questions, I just didn't expect you two would actually respond to my comments, seeing as how you two are, like, some of the best in the world and I am very new to this): 1. In your samba routine, does it travel around the room? If it was said, I probably just missed it. 2. I saw on your website you guys do salsa. Are you planning on doing anything with salsa? 3. For the Paso, when my partner and I do it, we end with about 30 seconds left. Should we return to the beginning of the routine? 4. Do you have any tips for keeping my shoulders rolled back and me not tilting forward? I seem to have this problem a lot.

Answering your questions chronological -
1. We actually do all dances 😉, but for now, are focusing on Latin dances online. We've had many requests for American rhythm dances.. so we have it on our list to put something out at some point... Bolero included.
2. Samba routine moves around the room. Start with leader facing wall.. then on promenade walks, travel down line of dance.
3. Yes to salsa! We put out a couple of salsa basic videos the last couple of weeks... For footwork Friday.
4. Paso. Yes. Restart your routine.
5. Posture... That's always a good one.
Keep your chest and upper back broad for starters. Shoulder tips pulled down. Don't pinch forward or back... Find an engaged neutral.
