    John, I'm amazed at how much I learn from you. I'm a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and I usually end up enjoying the outdoors solo (because no one in my life has the same passion) so everything I know about bush craft, I've had to learn on my own. You've given me so many ideas for staying safe and making the most of what I have. Many, many thanks!

    I have seen the method of sealing both ends. The fold over method is new to me, and very useful. Add that to how cheap and easily available straws are, and you've done a great service to the everyman. Thumbs up!

  • @zythepsary
    @zythepsary 11 років тому +2

    Several things I figured out: jumbo straws are easier to fit things in! Standard drinking straws are more difficult to fit items inside, i.e pills, lotion/ointment, matches . I've also found that for putting in things like lotion/ointment, it's nice to leave both ends open until the tube is partially filled (it's the whole air escaping thing) and then seal both ends. I've found a plastic irrigation syringe greatly aids in inserting lotion/ointment. Great video, I LOVE these tips!

  • @lonermon
    @lonermon 8 років тому +8

    excellent video. one recommendation . with the medications or pills , if possible use an orange colored straw. helps prevent ultraviolet light from degrading it ( same reason many prescription bottles are orange)

    • @IntenseAngler
      @IntenseAngler  8 років тому +2

      +Turtle X Did not know that... learn something new everyday :) Thanks for passing that info along my friend... much appreciated.

    • @Catastrofius
      @Catastrofius 8 років тому +1

      +Turtle X Turtle is correct, but in the case of the outdoors clear is still a better choice simply because you can readily see the pill. UV rays are not going to come into play because the medication spends its time in your backpack.

    • @Lifsun
      @Lifsun 7 років тому

      love the video, but this little piece of information is absolutely false. the colors of prescription bottles are simply tradition. visible color has zero effect on ultraviolet. you'd have to have an ultraviolet colored straw, and even that has its own range of colors. what matters is the medium the uv light is passing through. opaque straws should work better, but as mentioned by okhomestead, translucent / clear is better and degradation should be avoided if meds are kept in a backpack anyway.

      +IntenseAngler IA, When you showed the survival fishing packet it gave me an idea. Make the straw package reuseable and then after all the stuff is removed, you can reseal the straw tube and use it as a bobber!

    • @LeMayJoseph
      @LeMayJoseph 9 років тому

      Will yam Dysinger interesting! I have seen him also use a straw to hold sinkers, so it would be perfect to take those out and then seal the straw back up for a bobber.

    • @willyam9735
      @willyam9735 9 років тому

      But if the straw was made to be reused, you could loop the line around the bend then slide the little piece of straw back over the looped section to lock the line in pace as well as seal the resulting bobber from leaking!

    • @LeMayJoseph
      @LeMayJoseph 9 років тому

      Not sure if that would totally seal it, but I'm sure it would float for long enough. Sounds good!

  • @superchap
    @superchap 11 років тому +1

    When you're done making a fishing line, you could probably reseal the straw and use it as a 'bobber'. That was a really fun and useful video. That was the first time I've seen someone seal a straw with a big lighter and a pair of pliers. I really enjoyed the fire starter application. Finally, the yoyo work was worthy of note as well.

    Good for travelers too, not just campers. Store small quantities of toothpaste, makeup, etc. to avoid going over the liquids limit at TSA. Especially love the recloseable cap idea. Thanks!

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 9 років тому +1

      Yeah. If I tried to go through the TSA checkpoint with little homemade unlabeled plastic tubes of liquids and other mystery substances, I'd be water boarded at Camp X-Ray in lovely Guantanamo Cuba. It could be a fun prank on an ex-boyfriend. Make some of these, label them anthrax, RDX, C4, Ebola, weaponized smallpox, etc., and hide them in his luggage.

      TSA will not allow straws filled with liquids on board a plane....especially when they look home made as these do. Not only will they look at you crazy but probably arrest you on the spot.

    The only thing that would make these ideas better is if everyone packs out the straw pieces when done with them , lest we have little pieces of straws strewn about the woods. I know, I know, most of us are eco minded but this needed to be said for those that are slobs and don't care what they drop on the ground.

Also, I use the "One shot" miniature whiskey bottles to hold olive oil, etc. because they are small, super tough, and hold a lot more and has a cap, as well a clear ones you can buy to see the contents. For one buck you get the contents, and the container! ;-)

    Here in South Africa you can buy a certain Spirit Aperitif in very nice 100ml plastic bottles. I scratch in the bins outside the liquor stores (these things tend to get drunk _in situ_ ) and harvest them. I take them home, de-label them with turps, _sterilise_ them and then wash them well. They make _amazing_ small containers for all sorts of things - notably my at-home spices.

      Those definitely sound like they would make excellent containers for sure!

    Absolutely the best ideas I've received this year! I got lots of ideas from your sharing! I love the comments for larger straws for some uses and the colors! The small drugs packaging will help me pack daily medication for heart and cholesterol management for short trips! You Rock! Loved your sealing method! Now I need to get my lighter, scissors and leather man and have a ball! Much better and more compact than mini ziplocks!!
