  • Five handy, unique, and just plain awesome uses for ChapStick. Who would have thought that there would be so many "uncommon" uses for such a common item? Aside from simply preventing chapped lips, this video demonstrates a few of the many creative and functional applications that a regular ol' tube of lip balm can be used for. Some of the uses shown here include:
    - A simple, free, and effective field expedient firestarter. Made with any petroleum based lip balm and a bit of cotton, this little fire starter is easy to make, waterproof, and very effective. Perfect for getting a fire going in adverse conditions.
    - A great option for First-Aid and certain medical applications. Can be used on minor cuts and scrapes to help stop bleeding, as well as protect the wound from potential infection while in-the-field.
    - As an effective lubricant for outdoor gear and equipment. ChapStick can be used for everything from getting a stubborn zipper to operate more smoothly, to easing the joining and assembly of your 2 piece or telescoping fishing rod.
    - A quick, emergency repair option for waterproofing a minor puncture or tear in your tent-fly, rain jacket, or nylon tarp shelter.
    - A surprisingly effective homemade, emergency candle lantern.

I got hit by a bit of nostalgia watching this. I used to your videos when I was in middle school, and they inspired me to build little projects out of junk and helped fuel my enthusiasm for the outdoors, even when I couldn't actually get outside as much as I would have liked. I'm now in college studying forestry, and recently landed a position with Louisiana Conservation Corps. Woodworking and generally making things have also become really important parts of my life. On the off chance that you see this, I hope you're doing well, and thanks for making such great content.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this Zachary. I can't even begin to express how much it means to me to hear that my videos inspired you in even the smallest way. Even more importantly, I'm extremely happy to hear that you're now in college studying forestry and pursuing something that not only gives you a sense of fulfillment, but that ultimately helps all of us that enjoy nature and the outdoors. Thank you for that my friend. Congratulations on your new position with the Louisiana Conservation Corps by the way... that's awesome! I really hope that you enjoy it! I am doing well by the way, and hope to get back to posting videos again before long. All the best to you my brother! -John

Good for plugging a punctured gas tank too. While we were out camping up a forestry road in the middle of nowhere we punctured our gas tank while backing up over a sharp rock. Gasoline was dripping out, I simply pushed some Chap Stick into the hole and it immediately stopped the leak and it held for over 4 weeks until we fixed it properly. Awesome stuff.

For a broken finger you could pull it apart leaving just the hollow tube and split it down the middle using the two halves as a finger splint held together with tape or cordage. Make sure to hold on the the middle for your first aid, fire and repair needs. :)
You might even be able to use it as a fishing float if you pull it apart and tape off the ends.
It might even be worth wrapping a piece of tape around the chapstick for these applications.

    • @kevinpersic6149
      @kevinpersic6149 10 років тому +6

You are over thinking it. The best way to splint a finger is to tape it to the one and or ones next to it. It will hold it better and you get to save your chapstick for the lips.

I didn't read all the comments so this may have already been mentioned. But, you can use on hotspots on feet when walking, running or hiking. Just put it where you usually get or feel you're getting a blister. It helps tremendously. I also think that Dr. Scholl's blister stick they make is made from the exact same stuff. Not sure but, works and looks the same.

You're truly welcome and you earned them.
It's kind of funny that I gave a little bit of constructive criticism to another UA-camr that has similar videos on his channel and it really pissed him off pretty bad to the point that he resorted to name calling. Lol.
The way I see it, I have that right to voice my opinion and I try not do it in a way to where I think it's going to really hurt someone's feelings. I just call it as I see it. I made reference to apologizing if I was snoring during his video presentation because it was so freaking boring. It just seemed to drag on and on and on.
Nevertheless, keep up your excellent great work.

    Cool!
My most common off-label use of lip balm
is to repair scratched and damaged DVDs.
Just 'draw' a couple of lines on the CD or DVD,
rub it in with a finger tip,
and gently buff it smooth with a soft, clean handkerchief.
This works at least 80 percent of the time.

Use it as a foot or toe ointment to reduce friction on a long hike. I was almost crippled on a hike in Mexico, and remembered my marathon-running cousin used Vaseline on the back of his heels. I whipped out my Chapstick, put a glob of it between my bleeding toes: instant relief.

Now I have 3 candle wicks or fire starters, waterproofed & ready..I can't wait till the snow's gone & I can test this camping. Thanks

putting it on your nose, cheeks, and ears before extreme wind (say on a boat, or caught in the open) helps stop windburn (the friction of wind passing over your skin at high speeds)
ALSO BIG DISCLAIMER: DO NOT USE SCENTED OR FLAVORED BALMS ON OPEN WOUNDS! most of the flavors will irritate the wound, unflavored/scented will not.

Funny story: My husband and I had to walk a couple miles (no money for cab) in vegas, in the summer. 105 in the shade! and no shade! I was wearing sandals and I began to feel the sun on my feet.... sun burn starting!!! well I wipped out my chapstick and rubbed it all over the top of my feet. That saved me some really bad sunburn! So if the sun gets a bit much out there in the wild, you might consider this for your nose, your face, exposed shoulders, or the back of your neck.

One more thing... if you are going through some unexpected wet conditions and will be traveling heavily on foot, take your socks off and apply the chapstick, if you don't cary vasiline, to your heels, and on and between your toes. It is slightly heat trapping and water resistent and will saveon chaffing of damp socks against your toes and heels. A good temporary help for any area that get chaffed from rubbing equipment or straps, clothes ect.

One you forgot, is THE LIPS. WHen you hike, and start drying out. your lips do get chapped. Thats the origional reason, but heres another great tip. As SOAP rubbed on eyeglasses and then dried off will prevent them from fogging , so does Chapstick. You must install it before you leave the house as you must totally rub off the excess. Make the glass as clear as you can with a dry paper towel. What you cannot see it the wax left on the glass. It prevents fogging during rain or sweating. ALSO, I use it for ICE fishing when your breath rises while looking down at your fishing gear. Try it, it works. Even as good as, if not better than soap. OH YEA> and it acts like RAIN X on your winkshield. The rain runs off it and doesnt spot.

Amazing information. I've never camped before or really had to make due, Thank You God, so this is great information to have. Thank you for providing this.

love the lantern at the end -- good stuff - i will experiment with chapstic as a charcoal lighter (in a chimney)

Love your videos! Just came home from elk hunt where we tent camped. instead of a lantern inside this year I bought a solar powered led light and set the collector on the roof of the tent. Wallah! Light source with motion detection and no smelly fuels.
