I love that while most of the suits in "Man of Steel" were CG, Faora's suit at 8:52 was real and gave them the perfect lighting reference to work with. Unlike in "Avengers Endgame" when they didn't even have the final design of the suits at the time of the filming... which I guess only shows that the progress of the tech in just a few years.

@@sam8404 the "technical progress" he is talking about is how the marvel team didnt NEED the on set suit to perfect match lighting, while the man of steel team felt they needed the real thing enough that they made a practical physical copy

@@gregsmw why make any props ever? Why bother with on-set filming, or in a few years why bother with actors at all now that deepfakes are becoming better? Just hire voice actors and do everything in post. Another decade or two and AI may be good enough to where we just need a script and some version of Siri can give you a good VA too.

My problem with the CGI suits in Endgame and beyond is that they often don't *need* to be CGI. What about those suits was so complicated that you couldn't make them practically. At least here, the filmmakers had budget and design constraints that forced them to make CGI suits for Zod and the Nam-Ek. Both Zack Snyder and Michael Shannon were disappointed that Zod wouldn't be wearing a practical costume.

I've never seen the movie so this video really surprised me, it looks amazing indeed! It's one of my biggest pet peeves in superhero movies etc., that they don't manage to make the wirework look realistic at all (yet?), and that people just sort of glide through the air at a very recognizable wirework speed. It's still impressive how they do all that wirework, it's one hell of an undertaking, but it doesn't carry the oomph that these scenes from Man of Steel have. This just feels soooooo much better, it hit the realism sweet spot in my brain :P

Recently, I caught "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" while channel surfing and I realized that the Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde effects still hold up for the most part. Heck, to tell the truth most of the VFX still hold up, with one glaring exception: Near the end, one of the baddies drinks Dr. Jekyll's transformation juice and turns into an effect WORSE than the Scorpion King. Honestly, i'm surprised how well the rest of the movie holds up even after all these years, and also surprised that the Fox lawyers didn't sue Disney sometime in the 7 years before being brought by them for how eerily similar The Avengers is to it. Anyway, keep up the good work.

I think all the big scenes could be looked at for them. The plane scene is the most famous from the movie, but I think the yacht scene and especially the giant land mass out of the ocean scene are just as good as the plane scene. They also truly show how powerful Superman is, which Man of Steel does as well but in a different way. I even think the Metropolis disaster stuff is good enough to look at as well. I like their explanation for Man of Steel how seeing the motion and mass taken into account. When characters are moving at those speeds and generating that amount of power is fantastic.
Back when the movie Underworld 2 was made, theres a shot where Marcus in his vampiric form is flying around a truck in a chase scene, he is moving SOOOOOOO slowly. He at one point rams into the side of the vehicle and it just looks really bad how he moves slowly, just tucks a little but the truck is nearly thrown of the road.

A fan animation for 40k was recently released, called Vraks. It's focused on the Death Korps of Krieg, and while it doesn't quiet match the extreme detail of Astartes, it does do an amazing job of capturing the immense scale of that universe and the oppressive atmosphere prevalent throughout.

@N_O the movie still made a lot of money. With regarding the reception, it was a variety of factors, especially this was a very first cb solo outing after Avengers hit only a year before, superman killing, etc. Now you look at this point in time, most of Snyder's work tend to age very well. Although anyone will be stupid if they thought MoS wasn't anything special, esp. the vfx of it for the time or it's fantastic score.
Edit: Alright forget it, you seem to be an adamant DC hater, I have no interest in pursuing further who considers MoS trash.

If you guys are still up for covering CG animations, though, I'd like to recommend the Overwatch animated shorts. Can't think of any one particularly noteworthy effect in them, aside from maybe the giant robot getting frozen and falling apart in "Zero Hour," but you may find one of the shorts worth checking out.

You gotta love how the rolls have initially swapped in the world of modern Star Wars in terms of CGI. During the prequels we had mix between puppets and cgi (or full cgi) for most characters while real people interacted with them. Now in 2022, the real people are the CGI/Practical hybrids while they act along side practical puppets like Grogu

The Mouth of Sauron isn't actually a particularly interesting or complicated piece of VFX, it's all practical prosthetics makeup that was simply scaled up slightly in postproduction to make the proportions more unsettling. Meaning, there were no 3D models or digital lighting or elaborate compositing involved, or anything that would colloquially be called "CGI," simply manipulation of real footage to "upscale" the size of his mouth area. The weird teeth and the cuts on his face and everything, that was all real prosthetics. The only CH part was making it bigger.

1:52 I would love to see more examples of CG environments or projects that "play toward the strengths of new users".
So to recap Backrooms and liminal spaces work since there geometries are right angles, the lighting is simple (as in limited?), and you can hide the lack of surface imperfections using VHS filters.
Can we think of other examples like this? Like, shots that are really far away maybe?

  • @robertchildress9643
    @robertchildress9643 2 роки тому

For Sam (and anyone else interested), the use of that surreal office building thing is in fact a genre, called Liminal Horror. Refers to like Slenderman, Backrooms, The Shining, Alice in Borderlands. It uses 'liminal space', which is the psychological concept of a large, clearly manufactured space where the mind expects people to be, but there's not, or anything that is typically commonplace but with just a slight twist to make it extremely unnerving. You experience it naturally when like you need to go through a building when it's closed, or you're the only one in like a parking garage; it causes psychological dissonance, as our minds (in order to relax) try to latch on to senses of normalcy, but at the same time picks up on inconsistency in patterns. Liminality causes our brains to trigger both responses, causing an intense feeling of unease at both familiarity and wrongness. Some good lesser known examples include the video game Control and the anime/manga High-rise Invasion

I might use premiere to go in and add titles and maybe some general scene editing. But you can actually edit the video timeline in Blender as well. I'm not sure how to do the VHS thing in Blender but I'm sure it's an asset you can get somewhere and link in, or maybe it's just a clever use of nodes that a tutorial will teach. The rest of it is stuff that I've learned in just a week on Blender. Having some good materials from Poliigon and very basic modeling.
