Deep fakes have the potential to be a HUGE threat to our communications, so to say ‘don’t worry about it’ and to be so dismissive is to not understand that.
I love that while most of the suits in "Man of Steel" were CG, Faora's suit at 8:52 was real and gave them the perfect lighting reference to work with. Unlike in "Avengers Endgame" when they didn't even have the final design of the suits at the time of the filming... which I guess only shows that the progress of the tech in just a few years.
@@sam8404 the "technical progress" he is talking about is how the marvel team didnt NEED the on set suit to perfect match lighting, while the man of steel team felt they needed the real thing enough that they made a practical physical copy maybe the man of steel team didnt need it, but if so, why did they go through the effort of making it?
@@gregsmw why make any props ever? Why bother with on-set filming, or in a few years why bother with actors at all now that deepfakes are becoming better? Just hire voice actors and do everything in post. Another decade or two and AI may be good enough to where we just need a script and some version of Siri can give you a good VA too.
My problem with the CGI suits in Endgame and beyond is that they often don't *need* to be CGI. What about those suits was so complicated that you couldn't make them practically. At least here, the filmmakers had budget and design constraints that forced them to make CGI suits for Zod and the Nam-Ek. Both Zack Snyder and Michael Shannon were disappointed that Zod wouldn't be wearing a practical costume.
Annihilation (2018) has several disturbing and mind blowing fx shots. The mutant bear, the 3d Mandelbulb, the shiny alien, the flower people, the shimmer. It’s a decent movie, but a visual work of art.
I was truly blown away when I found out that General Zod's armor was completely CGI. I'm usually pretty good at spotting CGI but if I hadn't been explicitly told that his armor was full CGI, I would never have realized it. I assumed it was actual armor but with CG touch-ups here and there.
I really want to see them look at Peacemaker. Not only does Eagly look really good, but I thought the scene with the Gorilla looked amazing and I'd love to see what they have to say about it.
Seeing Kane Pixels get the recognition he deserves just puts a MASSIVE smile on my face. He along with many others proves that when you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything.
My sense from Man of Steel is that they took the the metaphor, "Faster than a speeding Bullet" and asked: How do bullets behave when they impact objects? And then made everything that. The impact in the dump truck @12:13 really fits that paradigm.
@@navarrochristianmichaele.3559 makes sense, considering a lot of the action scenes were inspired by anime, especially the last fight in the city mirroring a lot of the shots from the last fight in the 2nd season of Birdy the Mighty
What I loved about the luke reveal was how you see him and are immediately blown away then you think, ah but he won't open his eyes, then he does and your like DAMN. Then he speaks when he is off camera and your like, ah they are not gonna show him actually talking, then they do and your like DOUBLE DAMN. they like drip feed it throughout the scenes until you end up with full body luke lightsabre in hand doing his thing. They did it spot on. Didn't reveal all their cards in the first scene and left you on the edge of your seat as to what you would see next.
If you guys didn't know, they hired Shamook, a fellow cgi/machine learning youtuber. He put up a video fixing Luke from Mando and ILM liked it so much they hired him for Book of Boba. That's why it looks so much better now.
No they hired him as a trainee junior technician. He would not be allowed to deliver the finals of any shot never mind the Luke shots. The real Senior artists are getting fed up of false claims.
@@SimonRandall I was thinking jeez they just hire a UA-camr to handle the whole thing solo?! If that's the case, it's sad they're not getting the credit due! Because all I've heard is it's all Shamook.
Just making reality to the fact that doing what you love no matter if you are paid or not by another company (company meaning any place in some hierarchy). Your time will come, fellow artists!
I'm really happy to see Man of Steel get some love, especially for those action sequences. A lot of people complain about it and I understand, but I feel it didn't get the credit it deserves
I've mentioned this elsewhere... In the scene where the Kryptonian jumps and lands on the fighter jet, you can see him squeeze the pilot's head and crushes it like a grape. You can see a mist of blood spurting away.
What I find remarkable about the special effects in Man of Steel is that for the first time there is a real feeling of weight and invincibility against the elements, typically when they "go through" several buildings without even being braked.
Yes. When you see Superman, Zod, hit buildings, or the ground, you really feel the impact. My favorite is when Faora throw Kal El away and he lands on the bank vault, you hear the sound of the vault and the vault is bent by the impact.
It's definitely impressive, also weird they went with AI voice too, prob easier to match the CG but made it a little off. it was nice to see actual Luke Skywalker though and not rian Johnson's angry hobo Jake Skywalker from that dumpster fire hahaha, mark Hamill is just such a cool freaking guy and I still feel bad he came back after decades just to be in a shitty movie Also i think it's funny that superman's CG looks good..it's just too bad it's used to make him murder an entire city, decimate it like 100 9/11s and have an amazing actor like Cavill be stuck with Snyder's godawful edge lord scripts haha It's a bummer terrible writing ruined possibly great films
The more I watch these deepfake videos, the more I'm impressed about our brains ability to distinguish them from reality. It's crazy that we can catch those minute details that make some deepfake feel cgi, and we don't even try too hard, we just feel it!
well, it is a very important skill to have to be able to distinguish different creatures from one another... You don't wanna hug a lion thinking it is your mom and you wan't to know how mom looks when she is angry enough to be as dangerous as the lion! lol -The brain has been practicing on that one since before humans evolved...
I think it's mostly because there's an evolutionary advantage to being able to read people's emotions on their face, so we're really tuned into a lot of tiny details.
They’re all talking about deep fakes and I’m just here wondering how Yoda is a baby around Luke when he was old and disappeared when Luke was still learning.
I don't know if the explanation it's strictly evolution. I think it can also be the fact that we have seen a lot of people's faces and we have a pretty good model of how a face should look.
I have to say I’ve always loved the action in man of steel. It all feels like there’s so much weight to it. I’ve yet to see another superhero movie that portrays pure strength so effectively. It’s sad to see the dceu loses a lot of that after MOS.
Man of Steel has some of the best CGI in any superhero movie to date. That’s opening scene with the destruction and krypton and the final battle from Smallville to Metropolis was great
I'm so glad you did that _Man of Steel_ sequence, I've always said it's one of my favourite portrayals of super-on-super straight up melee combat put to screen. The weight and - as you said - momentum of everyone feels really solid, and the hits make sense.
2013 academy would never give an Oscar to a superhero film... But now after the marvel cinematic success they would even make make a special award for this type movies.......
@@bluespirit8590 LOL. What are you talking about? It's the opposite. Superman 1978 won an Oscar for VFX, Batman 1989 won an Oscar for art direction (production design), The Dark Knight got an Oscar for sound editing in additional to Heath Ledger winning Best Supporting Actor and Suicide Squad got an Oscar for makeup and also Spider-Man 2 won an Oscar for vfx and, as we know, it's not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU did nothing for superhero movies at the Oscars...in fact Avengers Endgame remains the only highest grossing movie to not have won a single Oscar...that says something.
I also noticed that in the book of boba, they avoided showing Luke's face when he was talking as much as possible. It was a clever trick, and I think it was really smart. And I also agree that the main thing that threw me off with Luke was the voice. It made him sound stiff which then made him kind of look stiff. But over all, it was very well done and I'm just happy to see the real Luke Skywalker I grew up with back on the screen.
I don't think it was clever. To me it just pointed the finger at the technical limitations they're still stuck with. The 4th wall was constantly shattered in these scenes, as if I was watching two puppets (Grogu and Luke) talk to each other. It's more jarring than simply having recast Luke.
@@incog.nyto. You do have a point. Though, because of how much better he looked in Book of Boba verses in the Mandalorian, I think by the next time the have him appear, he'll look even better. I do get what you're saying about "two puppets talking to each other." There for sure were moments that felt kind of uncomfortable. But I would blame that more on the voice than the deepfake
The second they put a voice actor in that role, he becomes the 2nd person ever to voice a live-action Luke Skywalker. Part of me wonders if the integrity of MH's position as the one and only live-action Luke is influencing some of these decisions (I get where they are coming from, I'd be okay with another actor, but we all kinda got super lucky with the amazing MH.
The "CGI" in Red vs Blue in the first few seasons is really interesting because it was so long a go in internet video, and what they would later do with fully CG episodes when they had some money and time to make them is a great look at there evolution.
@@GloomGaiGar I'm pretty sure that was all they used, as well as newer models as they the years went by, until they were able to start rigging their own stuff around season 9 bc they finally had a budget, since ppl wanted to see more of the show or smth.
@@GloomGaiGarI was talking about the times they just drew things on still parts of the frame to make things appear like they are in the world, and then the later seasons get a little more involved.
Man Of Steel, BVS and ZSJL really show the pure brutal strength of a superpowered being. No other superhero movie has made me feel like that's a dude that could actually destroy a city with his bare hands
I loved the Man of Steel movie purely cause of how they demostrated force, speed and impact. For some reason you could feel it way more, I guess that goes along with great sound design too.
I'd love to see a breakdown of how they did Javier Bardem putting his teeth/chin prosthetics back into his mouth in Skyfall. Taking them out seems to be purely CG, but putting them back in is some type of awesome mix.
The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! For the VFX series you gotta react to *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* Also at the end of second one there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight (tho technically it's sabers i think)
The strange, almost eerie environments that feel weirdly familiar are called 'liminal spaces' I believe, it's a cool concept to play with, you can search for loads of photos of them; the artists that work with them do some GREAT work!
You're almost there! Liminal spaces are places that are familiar but in a state of transition, they exist in a way you often dont get to see them like a school at midnight, it feels like you should know this place, but at midnight the school is transitioning between the two points when you should be viewing them making them extra eerie and can aid in setting the stage for something horrifying. Like an on and off switch for whole settings instead of a single light bulb, the moment between light and dark.
@@Tojeaux_ I guess that's why the backrooms concept is creepy, everyone is used to seeing office buildings when they're full of people not empty. Thanks for explaining that for me!
@@Tojeaux_ Thank you for that incredible definition. I knew about liminal spaces but having it explained like this makes a lot of sense why we feel the way we feel when we see these places.
I'd love to see the history of the Doctor Who title sequence throughout the years. It's a really interesting look at the history of special effects, especially on TV, specifically with the birth of electronic music, the early days of CGI and the precedent of fan creations influencing the original media.
Honestly, as a Social Studies teacher teaching Media Literacy, the "If you see it on a screen, don't believe it", is getting frighteningly close to reality these days...
I'm SO glad you guys covered Man of Steel! I LOVE how they managed to convey the power, speed and weight behind almost every action and response. Would love to see you guys cover more of it! The Krypton sequence in particular is incredible IMO.
I've never seen the movie so this video really surprised me, it looks amazing indeed! It's one of my biggest pet peeves in superhero movies etc., that they don't manage to make the wirework look realistic at all (yet?), and that people just sort of glide through the air at a very recognizable wirework speed. It's still impressive how they do all that wirework, it's one hell of an undertaking, but it doesn't carry the oomph that these scenes from Man of Steel have. This just feels soooooo much better, it hit the realism sweet spot in my brain :P
@Merel van den hurk You should definitely watch Zack Snyder's comic book movies. Don't lump them with those Marvel superhero movies. They are very different.
I'm so glad you guys finally did Man of Steel. The CGI in the movie felt gritty and real especially the Kryptonian tech and armor. The impacts in the fights scenes also felt legit like I could be watching it happen from my backyard. Still my favorite DCEU movie ever Pls if you can do Peacemaker next, Eagly blew my mind away
You should really do a deep dive of the Harry Potter series. So many stunts and so many effects. The underwater scenes and how they filmed them is insane, and the sheer volume of special effects and camera tricks is mind blowing not even the big magic moments, the castle the, the brooms, the duels. Lots to work with
Recently, I caught "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" while channel surfing and I realized that the Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde effects still hold up for the most part. Heck, to tell the truth most of the VFX still hold up, with one glaring exception: Near the end, one of the baddies drinks Dr. Jekyll's transformation juice and turns into an effect WORSE than the Scorpion King. Honestly, i'm surprised how well the rest of the movie holds up even after all these years, and also surprised that the Fox lawyers didn't sue Disney sometime in the 7 years before being brought by them for how eerily similar The Avengers is to it. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Agree, League would be great breakdown. Their practical effects were great, and they really only suffered due to relying to heavily on digital at points (such as the bad guy you referenced)
Two suggestions, one that may not be exactly the intent of the react space, but was sparked by Kane's film: 1) The virtual handheld cameras from 'Surf's Up'. 2) The slow motion fire effects at the end of 'The Dry'.
I HIGHLY recommend looking at the “2006 Superman Returns” plane scene. It’s very under appreciated CGI and practical effects in the world of superhero movies.
I think all the big scenes could be looked at for them. The plane scene is the most famous from the movie, but I think the yacht scene and especially the giant land mass out of the ocean scene are just as good as the plane scene. They also truly show how powerful Superman is, which Man of Steel does as well but in a different way. I even think the Metropolis disaster stuff is good enough to look at as well. Superman Returns is so underrated imo, as a huge fan of the Donner movie(s) I love that Superman Returns was a sequel to those movies. Even if Lois was miscast sadly.
@@LordLOC i didnt mind Lois, but i think i just like how attractive the actress looks. That movie is indeed underrated, grew up with the Donner films too. The Nostalgia feels with that John Williams classic theme opening was just a delight!
@@LordLOC for real.. my first memory in life when i was 3 or 4 was watching that intro and hearing the music... i even had a little red cape i loved wearing.. so great!
@@DeRockMedia I had a cape also when I was a kid! I also eventually got the supe tights but never got the shirt to go with it (until I was much to old lol) I still remember going as Superman for Halloween a couple times in the mid 80s - I think specifically when Superman 3 came out was the first time I did it. So many memories of those movies.
I watched Man of Steel recently and was shocked at how amazing it all looked. I had always heard that DC VFX are terrible. However after watching it and Batman V Superman I’ve realized they’re pretty damn good. Not the necessarily best but really solid!
Hi there, another great episode! I'd love to see you cover Dragons through the ages of VFX as they're an eternally popular subject, and yet one that's pretty difficult to nail. I'm personally fond of Dragonslayer - a physical go-motion solution as I recall, perhaps by ILM, with real fire too! Which is your favourite VFX dragon, and the worst in recent times? Good excuse to include The Hobbit and GoT too...
@@stuartspencer2161 yeah, I have that memory too, maybe exploiting a compelling voice actor to distract us! Looking back, there've been some dodgy dragons. I loved the TV show Merlin, but the CGI dragon doesn't hold up too well now, and that was John Hurt doing the voice, perhaps trying for the Dragonheart distraction! I think Smaug in The Hobbit (another good voice actor! Maybe it's a thing!) and the last GoT examples have been the best-looking in recent times.
@@cameralabs Reign of Fire, was a good film. haven't watched it for a while so can't remember how well the VFX stack up. Think I will have to watch it today now lol
The hobbit changing it from a dragon to a wyvern would be interesting to talk about lol. I would like to hear their opinions on the one in maleficent (2014).
You guys you should compare the Man of Steel animation to the Fleischer Brothers Superman shorts. The style, down to the color palette, is very similar. I think the vault crash is taken directly from one of the shorts.
13:39 Blender has a feature that lets you lock the camera to view and use WASD to move around. if you eneble auto keyframes you can make it look like a first person moving camera. of course it needs a lil tweaking for that camera shake.
That would make it look like a fps video game; not a handheld camera. With the amount of work it would take to make it handheld, you might as well keyframe it from scratch.
The AI voice was a massive mistake for Luke. It does the deepfake effect a big injustice, because as soon as Luke opens his mouth it’s incredibly off-putting.
Yeah I guess I didn't wanna let myself think that but the audio was very weird. There's something about AI synthesized voices that gross me out, I never like hearing them
I bet some audio engineer will perfect it, post a UA-cam video, and then get hired by Disney. They really want to be able to fully resurrect actors without even stressing about it.
I would love to see a video going through the various ways Superman’s effects have been done over the years, comparing the ‘78 movie with Returns and Man Of Steel, Smallville and so on!
I like their explanation for Man of Steel how seeing the motion and mass taken into account. When characters are moving at those speeds and generating that amount of power is fantastic. Back when the movie Underworld 2 was made, theres a shot where Marcus in his vampiric form is flying around a truck in a chase scene, he is moving SOOOOOOO slowly. He at one point rams into the side of the vehicle and it just looks really bad how he moves slowly, just tucks a little but the truck is nearly thrown of the road. More super powered characters that look accurately super powered would be awesome to see.
The backrooms clip is 100% CG but the moment you're dropped into it, it looks unquestionably real. The illusion only breaks down later. And I think the main reason as for why this looks so real, is because the camera movement looks perfectly real. No jittery virtual hand-keyed camera animations, no after effects camera shake, no motion blur scene transition or fake zooms. It's perfect
Something that we thought was amazing at the time was ‘Real Steel’ - it seemed pretty flawless at the time, it would be good to see your reaction liking back at it now. What can be better than fighting robots.
Been rewatching Game of Thrones lately and have been blown away by the shots of locations (especially in the later seasons). Dragonstone, Moat Cailin, Bear Island, Volantis, etc. all look like more than just concept art thrown on a green screen, especially as characters approach them. Would love a quick explanation!
For me, the best digital de-aging effect is Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy II's intro. Some people actually get physically ill from the Uncanny Valley. I know this because my Mom is one of them. When I was a kid, she threw up at a screening of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and later did so at Tron: Legacy too (and she did at Disneyland on Pirates of the Caribbean). So, to the Book of Boba Fett's credit: Young Luke didn't make her sick, whereas Rogue One was basically unwatchable by her.
This is brand new information to me. I have never known or even questioned if this had ever happened. It makes sense , some people are sensitive visually... meaning they may "see" or perceive more than most. Seeing something like that may be jarring or disorienting??? I'm definitely not a expert and just making a guess so don't take my word, please lol. Just thinking it's plausible because my brother gets I'll if he stares out of a window from a moving vehicle. Just suddenly 🤢 then 🤮 in seconds.
Would love to see you tackle the Aquaman movie. Seriously, to my (untrained) eye, a lot of the CGI looked straight out of an early 2000s movie. It’s a huge studio. What happened there?
Water. Lol I think Aquaman type movies (in a water environment) will development over time the same way everything else did with time and mistakes. I'm not an expert, just a guess lol
Aquaman looked great! Especially the underwater stuff. I think a part of it is that it looks so alien. So unfamiliar translates to us as fake. But there’s not a single shot in it worse than the train sequence in Black Panther or the last battle in Endgame…
Then you're a fool, I recently re-watched it in 4K at home and it's just as fun and fantastic looking as it was in the cinema. Some things may have lacked polish but it's extremely CGI heavy so focus was spread a bit thin.
Underwater CGI is some of the hardest CGI to do, and because we're in a day and age where artists are being forced to pump out content too quickly, the CGI ends up looking for worse then it should. I'm sure the team has the capabilities to make underwater CGI where you can't tell it's fake, it's just not enough time to make it look as good as it could look unfortunately.
The deep fake for Luke looked really good, until he was next to Ahsoka, then you could really tell the difference. Mostly in the body movements, since Luke's face can't really get direct sunlight.
This was not “pure” deepfake. A 3D model was involved. To what extent is a matter of ILM choosing or not to disclose eventually. I worked on 3D Luke, so I know a bit about it :)
The Man of Steel clips, especially when Faora does her dash punch combos on the soldiers. It has such a good timing and impacts it feels like it's straight out of Street Fighter or something. It just feels sooo good watching it
I always thought that when she did that it was a stylised way to make it look like comic book panels. Like the mini pauses of each take down was like a panel image, if that makes sense.
In terms of 3D animation having weight and being connected to its environment, some of the best I've seen is the polar bear from His Dark Materials. And it was a BBC production, made for British TV. Take a look at the close ups of the mouth, the fur, and its full body movements when trudging across the ice. Very very impressive, especially for such a relatively small production.
I'm a huge Firefly fan, and I always thought that the CGI in that show was a bit ahead of its time. It had to be one of the first TV shows to be doing so much without the camera being locked down. In the pilot episode, the reaver escape scene stands out to me, especially the view of them taking off after the "Crazy Ivan" maneuver. Thanks Corridor Crew, keep up the great work!
It's scary awesome to think where we'll end up with deepfakes and how this changes filmmaking for the future. Star Wars is at its best when it pushes filmmaking forward in innovating and amazing ways!
Watching the Luke scene in BoBF I was thinking that the foresty-shadowy setting might in part have been down to having lots of similarly-lit footage of Mark Hamill at around the right age leftover from the Endor scenes in Jedi...
You should bring on Griffin and do a “concept artist react” where you look specifically at concept art and then how it translates to the final product. A whole video of the journey from conception to reality
Another excellent episode. That Kane Pixels spot was really well planned...and that's what makes it work. Execution on a phenomenal plan. Since we're in horror land, I'd love to see you guys take a peek at Thirteen Ghosts. Such a fun campy movie, but there were some moments I really thought the effects stood out.
Have you ever looked at Jupiter Ascending? Would love to see a breakdown, there are plenty of shots (of people flying for instance) that don't really hold up. The project was clearly too ambitious for the budget, I've seen enough material for a couple of episodes so there's plenty to choose from
Yeah, I don't even really like the movie all that much, the writing was kind of a letdown, but holy fuk the CGI was fucking gorgeous. I've rewatched the movie on more than one occasion just to simply Look at it lol
A fan animation for 40k was recently released, called Vraks. It's focused on the Death Korps of Krieg, and while it doesn't quiet match the extreme detail of Astartes, it does do an amazing job of capturing the immense scale of that universe and the oppressive atmosphere prevalent throughout.
@N_O the movie still made a lot of money. With regarding the reception, it was a variety of factors, especially this was a very first cb solo outing after Avengers hit only a year before, superman killing, etc. Now you look at this point in time, most of Snyder's work tend to age very well. Although anyone will be stupid if they thought MoS wasn't anything special, esp. the vfx of it for the time or it's fantastic score. Edit: Alright forget it, you seem to be an adamant DC hater, I have no interest in pursuing further who considers MoS trash.
Great takes and breakdowns as always, guys! I was especially blown away by the Kryptonians' armor being 3D-rendered back in 2012. If you guys are still up for covering CG animations, though, I'd like to recommend the Overwatch animated shorts. Can't think of any one particularly noteworthy effect in them, aside from maybe the giant robot getting frozen and falling apart in "Zero Hour," but you may find one of the shorts worth checking out.
Loved the Man of Steel review. When you talked about the Motion Capture suits I had an idea about you guys putting your merch on them instead. You could do this for any movie that you have the Motion Capture footage of.
You gotta love how the rolls have initially swapped in the world of modern Star Wars in terms of CGI. During the prequels we had mix between puppets and cgi (or full cgi) for most characters while real people interacted with them. Now in 2022, the real people are the CGI/Practical hybrids while they act along side practical puppets like Grogu
The new Luke in Boba Fett blew away even your improved Luke you guys did based on that Mandalorian episode. I was impressed. I don't think you guys could do an improved version this time!
I have seen every single fight scene of man of steel frame by frame in slow motion thousands of time and no body ever understood why. I think I'll share this video with them to explain why 😂
The vfx that blew my mind the most when I was a kid was in return of the king when the fellowship encounters the gate keeper of Mordor. The dude with the weird mouth. I remember that being so amazing and me being like how the hell did they do that?! It looks so real! Haven’t seen that movie in a while so I’d be interested to see how that scene holds up.
The Mouth of Sauron isn't actually a particularly interesting or complicated piece of VFX, it's all practical prosthetics makeup that was simply scaled up slightly in postproduction to make the proportions more unsettling. Meaning, there were no 3D models or digital lighting or elaborate compositing involved, or anything that would colloquially be called "CGI," simply manipulation of real footage to "upscale" the size of his mouth area. The weird teeth and the cuts on his face and everything, that was all real prosthetics. The only CH part was making it bigger.
Would love to see you guys go through how some TV shows have improved or not improved over time. Something like Supernatural which run for like 10+ years so the CG improved over time for the same style of monsters etc.
Its really a shame and symptomatic for why DC just cant consistently get a leg up on Marvel. The ingredients are there, but never the right Chef and Manager at the same time - since Man of Steel.
I find it funny when someone says they don't like animated movies, they like real actors, but are happy with the Avengers or one of the 'live action' Disney remakes. Technically a lot of (or all) of those movies are animated.
Just want to mention that the A-roll of you guys on the couch looks much better than usual. You guys usually have some blueish and purple casts that are pretty weird, but this one looks nice and natural.
1:52 I would love to see more examples of CG environments or projects that "play toward the strengths of new users". So to recap Backrooms and liminal spaces work since there geometries are right angles, the lighting is simple (as in limited?), and you can hide the lack of surface imperfections using VHS filters. Can we think of other examples like this? Like, shots that are really far away maybe?
Could you do an episode dedicated to "invisibility effects"?, from practical effects to CGI. Including The Invisible Man (1933), Predator, Fantastic four, Hollow Man, The Invisible Man (2020), and others.
For Sam (and anyone else interested), the use of that surreal office building thing is in fact a genre, called Liminal Horror. Refers to like Slenderman, Backrooms, The Shining, Alice in Borderlands. It uses 'liminal space', which is the psychological concept of a large, clearly manufactured space where the mind expects people to be, but there's not, or anything that is typically commonplace but with just a slight twist to make it extremely unnerving. You experience it naturally when like you need to go through a building when it's closed, or you're the only one in like a parking garage; it causes psychological dissonance, as our minds (in order to relax) try to latch on to senses of normalcy, but at the same time picks up on inconsistency in patterns. Liminality causes our brains to trigger both responses, causing an intense feeling of unease at both familiarity and wrongness. Some good lesser known examples include the video game Control and the anime/manga High-rise Invasion
Blender is IMMENSELY powerful software. Moreso than most people realize. Everything in that video could be done through Blender and it wouldn't even break a sweat.
I might use premiere to go in and add titles and maybe some general scene editing. But you can actually edit the video timeline in Blender as well. I'm not sure how to do the VHS thing in Blender but I'm sure it's an asset you can get somewhere and link in, or maybe it's just a clever use of nodes that a tutorial will teach. The rest of it is stuff that I've learned in just a week on Blender. Having some good materials from Poliigon and very basic modeling.
Once I saw that video, I got inspired and made my own version. It looks pretty similar I’d say. So I definitely don’t think you need Adobe. I used DaVinci for compositing.
You guys ALWAYS do a great episode! Something you should check out is Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It is an old Disney movie from 1971 and it would be fun to see you guys react and comment on the flying bed scenes in the movie. They are VEEEERY trippy!

The irony of a CGI luke and a puppet grogu is never lost on me.
While there is a puppet of Grogu, he's often CGI and animated to look like a puppet.
@@flammablezeus I’d swap the word “often” to “rarely”.
And in that scene it was the puppet. They only use CG when they cannot use the puppet.
Yes, they should’ve made a puppet Luke and a real Baby Yoda.
@@ironized No, it's pretty often.
Not sure if I'd chalk that up to technical progress, sounds like it was just better planning/coordination between the crew and VFX department.
@@sam8404 the "technical progress" he is talking about is how the marvel team didnt NEED the on set suit to perfect match lighting, while the man of steel team felt they needed the real thing enough that they made a practical physical copy
maybe the man of steel team didnt need it, but if so, why did they go through the effort of making it?
It’s a decent movie, but a visual work of art.
yes! gorgeous looking movie (with a wonderful score). shame it didn't quite live up to the books, but the vfx were done really well.
i think they did annhilation
I was truly blown away when I found out that General Zod's armor was completely CGI.
I'm usually pretty good at spotting CGI but if I hadn't been explicitly told that his armor was full CGI, I would never have realized it. I assumed it was actual armor but with CG touch-ups here and there.

My sense from Man of Steel is that they took the the metaphor, "Faster than a speeding Bullet" and asked: How do bullets behave when they impact objects? And then made everything that. The impact in the dump truck @12:13 really fits that paradigm.
It's just live action dragon ball fights
@@navarrochristianmichaele.3559 makes sense, considering a lot of the action scenes were inspired by anime, especially the last fight in the city mirroring a lot of the shots from the last fight in the 2nd season of Birdy the Mighty

Shamook is KING!
No they hired him as a trainee junior technician. He would not be allowed to deliver the finals of any shot never mind the Luke shots. The real Senior artists are getting fed up of false claims.
I heard someone say they also hired someone from Corridor (this channel) but I couldn't find any source

I'm really happy to see Man of Steel get some love, especially for those action sequences. A lot of people complain about it and I understand, but I feel it didn't get the credit it deserves
Man of steel è un capolavoro
I've mentioned this elsewhere... In the scene where the Kryptonian jumps and lands on the fighter jet, you can see him squeeze the pilot's head and crushes it like a grape. You can see a mist of blood spurting away.
That man of steel fight is simply amazing. I come back to watch it now and again
Feels like a live action anime battle.
When I saw the Luke Skywalker bit I IMMEDIATELY thought of you guys... Then after that brief second my mind was blown by the shots itself 😂😂

It's definitely impressive, also weird they went with AI voice too, prob easier to match the CG but made it a little off.
it was nice to see actual Luke Skywalker though and not rian Johnson's angry hobo Jake Skywalker from that dumpster fire hahaha, mark Hamill is just such a cool freaking guy and I still feel bad he came back after decades just to be in a shitty movie
Also i think it's funny that superman's CG looks good..it's just too bad it's used to make him murder an entire city, decimate it like 100 9/11s and have an amazing actor like Cavill be stuck with Snyder's godawful edge lord scripts haha

You don't wanna hug a lion thinking it is your mom and you wan't to know how mom looks when she is angry enough to be as dangerous as the lion! lol
-The brain has been practicing on that one since before humans evolved...
Thousands of years of human evolution.

Didn't think after 65 episodes of these breakdowns that Corridor Digital FINALLY checks Man of Steel's visual effects. Thank you guys 👌🏾💙
The voice was made by a robot
@@badfoody Exactly! You don't send a robot to do a voice actor's job
RvB model progression really shows the advancements of CG in the last two decades
Did they even use CGI that wasn't the game engine in the very first few seasons? Talking about OG Halo 1 here.

Man Of Steel, BVS and ZSJL really show the pure brutal strength of a superpowered being. No other superhero movie has made me feel like that's a dude that could actually destroy a city with his bare hands

Kudos to Kane for reaching this level 15:19
Two suggestions, one that may not be exactly the intent of the react space, but was sparked by Kane's film:
1) The virtual handheld cameras from 'Surf's Up'.
There is also Dragonheart (1996). I recall it was great at the time, though didn't age well
@@stuartspencer2161 yeah, I have that memory too, maybe exploiting a compelling voice actor to distract us! Looking back, there've been some dodgy dragons.
I love the way they depicted the super speed in Man of Steel. No slow motion, just full speed. Same as with Eternals too
The AI voice was a massive mistake for Luke.
What are you talking about? That was Mark Hammil.
I didn’t hate the voice but mark Hamil or a voice actor could definitely deliver these lines with more passion
Man of steel 4k blu-ray is pretty solid, crispy close ups and suits. The zod suit is all cg and it looks solid
It holds up so much better than I thought it would.
That Kurt Russell deaging was AMAZING! They had shadows and everything.
This is the first time I actually ever heard of someone getting physically ill over seeing the uncanny valley. Interesting.
I'm not an expert, just a guess lol
aquaman looks gorgeous
I presume that a CGI face was used to aid the deepfake?

I'm a huge Firefly fan, and I always thought that the CGI in that show was a bit ahead of its time. It had to be one of the first TV shows to be doing so much without the camera being locked down. In the pilot episode, the reaver escape scene stands out to me, especially the view of them taking off after the "Crazy Ivan" maneuver. Thanks Corridor Crew, keep up the great work!
It's scary awesome to think where we'll end up with deepfakes and how this changes filmmaking for the future. Star Wars is at its best when it pushes filmmaking forward in innovating and amazing ways!
Imagine when someone like Will Smith dies. They would have so much reference that I reckon they could make a perfect deep fake.
The industry keeps improving.. next tims you know it, in a few generations later and they'll all get so VR irl...
Makes you wonder what they can fake on television
Imagine an industry so devoid of any new ideas, that they create a whole new technology so they can reuse existing ideas....

Watching the Luke scene in BoBF I was thinking that the foresty-shadowy setting might in part have been down to having lots of similarly-lit footage of Mark Hamill at around the right age leftover from the Endor scenes in Jedi...
React to The Raid series by battlestate games on UA-cam. It has some of the most realistic gun fights I’ve ever seen
Absolutely!
YES
The project was clearly too ambitious for the budget, I've seen enough material for a couple of episodes so there's plenty to choose from
Yep! Agree with this one!
Yeah, I don't even really like the movie all that much, the writing was kind of a letdown, but holy fuk the CGI was fucking gorgeous. I've rewatched the movie on more than one occasion just to simply Look at it lol
The gravity boots were awesome! Along with the first big fight in the city
Yeah, Man of Steel still holds the cake for the best large scale action sequences in a CBM, even after 9 years!
Every hit, impact, crunch, crack, whiff! Bam! Whack! And POW! MoS delivered so much within its runtime.
Idk if this is just me but i think Zack Snyder makes movies which are ahead of their time and David Fincher said "The best test of a film is time"
Do you guys think Zack could do a live action dragon ball Z movie......the right way not like the other one we will not mention.
@@anthonyclarke2253 Yupp i think he can do a really good DBZ film considering the epic-esque action sequences that he had done in his filmography
I actually requested Man of Steel... thank homies!!! 💪🏾💪🏾
Me too😂 let's find out who's they saw
You gotta love how the rolls have initially swapped in the world of modern Star Wars in terms of CGI. During the prequels we had mix between puppets and cgi (or full cgi) for most characters while real people interacted with them. Now in 2022, the real people are the CGI/Practical hybrids while they act along side practical puppets like Grogu
The attention to physics in men of steel is on another level, the best superhero fight scene I've ever encountered even today
The new Luke in Boba Fett blew away even your improved Luke you guys did based on that Mandalorian episode. I was impressed. I don't think you guys could do an improved version this time!
CorridorCrew 🍺🤨: Death hold my brew!
Deathbrewer 💀🍻❓
Man of Steel! I'm glad you guys are covering it. I loved the breakdown you did of Steppenwolf in ZSJL.
I'm so happy they were appraising Man of Steel. One of my favorite DC movies.
12:48 no no no, this isn't just a on time horror short, this is a full story thing, it is lore.
Would be cool to see a whole episode dedicated to only practical effects too :)
I don't know if you've done it before, but Zathura does a really good job of combining practical and CGI effects for an amazing movie
Would love to see you guys go through how some TV shows have improved or not improved over time. Something like Supernatural which run for like 10+ years so the CG improved over time for the same style of monsters etc.
Good God, Zimmer's Man Of Steel score still gives me chills. Alas, we'll never have a second movie for him.
They’re obviously talking about the aesthetic and not the technology...
Just want to mention that the A-roll of you guys on the couch looks much better than usual. You guys usually have some blueish and purple casts that are pretty weird, but this one looks nice and natural.
I would love to see a breakdown of the scene in "Gravity" when they pan the shot from outside the helmet of Ryan through the visor into the helmet
Can you for real do what Kane did on Blender? I mean he’s madly talented ofc but, I imagined this wasn’t possible without Adobe
Blender is IMMENSELY powerful software. Moreso than most people realize. Everything in that video could be done through Blender and it wouldn't even break a sweat.
This guy doesn't know how hard Blender slaps.
@@nickgallagher1558 Yeah there is freeware for video editing and adding vhs effects.
Once I saw that video, I got inspired and made my own version. It looks pretty similar I’d say. So I definitely don’t think you need Adobe. I used DaVinci for compositing.
You all should definitely do more Snyder movies. The CGI in his movies are just amazing, and pretty.
@Ruchir Raina who cares? Still looks dope af 😂
Have y'all reacted to Shin Godzilla, yet?
Precisely. Nice to see you here.
You guys ALWAYS do a great episode! Something you should check out is Bedknobs and Broomsticks. It is an old Disney movie from 1971 and it would be fun to see you guys react and comment on the flying bed scenes in the movie. They are VEEEERY trippy!
2013 Man of Steel has better VFX than most of actual DC movies..... better story too!
