Putting it out there again: Dredd (2012)'s Slo-Mo FX! It's a lot of basic slow-motion, but they tweak it with VFX to such a pleasing and iconic aesthetic that it DESERVES to be reacted to!
Yes! This shots are probably pretty simple in terms of execution but standsm out purely due to great art direction

Funny thing, Gavin Free did the slow motion shots in Dredd, and they know him and already called him on an episode to talk about his work on Sherlock Holmes.
what gets me in the breaking bad scene is the explosion itself. it's so realistic and raw, no intense fireballs or any of that stuff. just plain power and awesomeness
the door flying off is kinda cartoony to me, like they sped up the footage to make it faster kinda thing.

I watched a 25-minute feature about how they did the explosion scene in Breaking Bad, the practical effects alone are so impressive. Also they did _19 takes_ of the panning shot after Gus walks out of the room! That's how many it took before Vince was satisfied. And then, when he reviewed them without knowing which takes were which, that 19th take is the one he ended up choosing.
Just shows how perfectionism pays off!
Yes!! I remember watching those scenes in the Witcher and praying you guys would break it down. My brain kept going “That’s CG! Wait, it’s not CG, no, that’s CG! Wait? That’s not CG?” Glad to finally have some closure 😂.
I'd like to see you guys react to:
-Silent Hill (2006) - the otherworld transitions, and Monsters designs
-Sam Raimi's Spider man 1 and 3 (sandman effects, Venom and symbiote effects)
This one is more of a technical question, but in Spiderman No Way Home, they obviously reused footage of the lizard and Sandman from their original films. But they had different effects, which requires, I assume, the original footage that was caught on camera. Is it common practice to save raw footage for that long?
Edit: I can't believe I forgot this but also in Silent Hill there's a scene with dark Alessa hugging Rose and then just kinda "integrates" herself into her.
Especially since the monsters were practical effects and were guys in monster makeup.

Technically speaking that kind of effect can be done without the raw footage, but regardless it does look like they used said raw footage to achieve the best look possible. Film and video are rarely discarded for major productions nowadays and are almost always archived. The shot they used for Lizard wasn’t even in the original film it was an unused take from a different angle.

@@ParzivalTheThird Ok, but the shot where they used Sandman turning back to his human form was almost clearly the same one where in the original film his hand was turning to mud. I assume they'd had to use the raw footage for this, no? And that's from 2007 or even 2006, when it was filmed.
Corridor Crew should definitely react to The Chronicles of Narnia. Both the Disney (and Fox) films, but also the older BBC TV show that has some rather crazy effects.

Ahhh, I'm so disappointed they didn't talk about the VFX that needed to be done to cover the track in Gus's last shot. They had to digitally replace the debris on the floor in order to cover the camera track. That was also a very impressive feat.

For me that Nivellan (The Witcher) effect is so great due to the eyes being real, that ties it together and the performance so well.
I was 100% sure it was a prosthetic. It's just impressive.

I assumed the eyes were makeup and the nose down was cgi. I remember totally trying to figure it out when I was watching it for the first time
The lip movements didn't look right. His lips needed to form a momentary seal when he speaks a "p". That's not actually possible when you have adjacent exposed teeth (in this case going both up and down). Nivellen's lips don't conform around his teeth, and we expect to see that when he talks.
I realize it's a lot of work, but lips don't just go up and down when we talk. They are so agile that deaf people can tell what you are saying from looking at your lips! Watch Nivellen again -- you can't do that, his lips are too stiff. Human lips are more compliant, and we actively use our teeth to support them. People missing front teeth have speech impediments that you can hear.
There's another problem, which is that teeth can't be exposed all the time, because they'd dry out and then shatter. Water isn't enough -- dentin requires saliva to maintain toughness and mend microfractures. Even the big canines of a lion or tiger or the protruding lowers of a hippo are covered and kept wet by loose lips that fold over them nearly all the time. These long lips are pulled back when fighting or eating, leading to the characteristic wrinkles that we associate with fierceness.
I would love to see y’all discuss the hunger games! As the series progressed, the cgi became better and better. Additionally, much of the cgi was creating environments which were very stylized, and I would love to hear y’all discuss how to create convincing environments while keeping a specific style
The 2nd one was filmed partially at the Atlanta Beach, which was an artificial beach constructed for the 96 Olympics, to have the circular beach in the arena. The VFX in those shots is incredible, I think the only thing that isn't created is the beach itself. The entire background and I'm sure lots of the stuff in the water is CG.

I was just about to comment, this ide suggest looking at the ring gate explosions (season end of season 5 and 6), and some of the anti gravity liquid effects. also maybe the some season 1 effects as well as the weird creatures from season 6 and the proto molecule creature.
@@badwolverinex17 the planet drop scene from the last episode is pretty rough, one of the worst scenes I've seen in a while but everything else has always been passable at the very least IMO.

@@yoshiyoshiyoshi21 Totally agree it would be great to have more as there are 3 more books in the series. From what I can gather the story takes a leap 30 years into the future, so the current storyline with Holden, Amos, Naomi are at their natural conclusion. Think it was a case of going out on a high point for the actors too, but the creative team have said never say never to a return. 🙏

I think the difference between the NPH bullet time versus the original bullet time, is that we're seeing things from NPH's perspective where he is the one moving (and perceiving) fast, instead of from Neo's perspective being slower observing something moving fast. So it does make some sense to look different.
Note, I haven't seen the movie.

Just re-watched the 1955 movie Tarantula! Its a very interesting old school sci-fi that has some interesting VFX!

Just Binged Severance and I could never skip the opening credits. It's so satisfying to watch and see clues about it the show. I would love to see an episode dedicated to well done CGI intros. ( Severance, Game of Thrones, Westworld, new Lord of the Rings....etc..) love every episode. Keep it up everyone!
Nivellen was SO well-done in that Witcher season 2 episode. Could’ve fooled me that it was all prosthetics, but nope, the whole face is CG. Now that’s some masterful VFX work that doesn’t overdo it while also allowing the actor to not be bothered by makeup and prosthetics for his facial performance. Also, Kristofer Hivju did it brilliantly. But man, is it weird to see him cleanly shaved after seeing him with a full beard for so long, lol
Agree, I read an interview with him when he had done a Swedish police drama and he jokingly said something about having it in his contract his character had to have a beard. 😁

i really liked the jankiness of the NPH slow-mo sequence. it was an affect i hadn't seen before and felt unique and jarring which i think was the intended result
It IS the intended result and Its so frustrating that they don't realize it. It's a stylized attempt at portraying latency in like an online video game. I think its super cool, and exactly what they were going for. They wanted to try something different than just re-doing an old effect that they already proved they could do perfectly, even back then.
@@retroradtacular The mismatched framerate is the intended part, the terrible rotoscoping, bad exposure and lighting is not the intended part. Unless the goal is to make it look like low budget cgi, in which case they succeeded.
I'm almost 65 and love what you guys do. A brief history, I was part of of a improv group in high school and eventually ended up in Second City Toronto. Back in the day we would volunteer at our local cable TV station to learn how it all works and then come in with our skits/material and film it ourselves. That was decades ago and during the past few years I've enjoyed your Saturday at noon drops and during Covid you have have inspired us to get creative again. My thanks (Hey I know you need the bucks and understood, some of us can't afford another internet cost but at least ya still give us the UA-cam)

I just dropped by to recommend the Borg Queen's head attachment scene too. A very good effect in its time, and it still holds up after a quarter of a century!
I desperately want them to talk about Deep Space Nine S5E6 "Trials and Tribble-ations" The way they combined old footage and re-created sets to create a time travel story that seamlessly integrates stuff that actually happened on a prior show blows my mind every time.

Having just binged both seasons of The Witcher, that effect especially sold me. That episode the only time I ever realized an effect was happening was the weird ghost girl going all Max Headroom
The whole time I was watching Nevallen, I was trying to figure out where prosthetics ended and CGI began. So once I saw a BTS video and learned that his whole face was CGI with mocap...I was even more impressed.

That gus scene, when I first saw it, gave me a heart attack. So convincing. So realistic.
The heart attack from me was knowing he *had* to be dead, and then seeing him walk out. Impossible! There's no *way* he could've survived! But, if anyone *could* have, it would be Gus... And there was nothing else in the show to suggest that kind of VFX budget. It was absolutely amazing filmmaking.
It's been years and I'm still kinda mad I got that shot spoiled before I was able to see the episode.
The Breaking Bad scene is what finally made me watch the show. I kept seeing the ending of each episode on recordings of other shows I was watching, but never watched the show because I could not see how a show about a Meth dealer could be good. Then I saw him walk out of a room, with half his face blown off, and I said "Okay... I have to see what leads up to this." I am so glad I finally watched the show.
The special effects in Warehouse 13 is something that I have always loved, got a lot of charm and cheese to it. Would love to see you go over it.
I also enjoyed Warehouse 13! Also the show Sanctuary had a lot of good creature effects.
This is really becoming my favorite channel. As someone who loves movies, but doesn't really understand/know all of the logistics and nuance that goes into making projects, this channel adds a lot without being too technical. Much appreciated

you guys can't imagine the amount of versions have been done just to make the sparks look like what Lana wanted.
Also, in my opinion, the Analyst wasn't supposed to look smeary like in the first movie. He is not an agent, just a matter of director's taste, different time-zones and looks.
At least you didn't say anything about Neo's CG hair and coat! :D
Real simple but fun vfx shot! The impaled zombie in Shaun of the Dead. The timing with the wind up camera is great.
The black Hole 1979 has some OUTSTANDING practical effect for the time..Definitely a good one to check out.

That's a great idea. That was my biggest issue with the new one, still loved it though.
The opening shot of The 'Burbs. A film in the 1980s had a continuous zoom from the Universal logo down to street level. Seamlessly done
The effects work is great on the Breaking Bad Gus shot, but the building up takes it to another level. The reveal of him walking there with the good side of his face showing makes you think he survived. But then as you hear the shrieks of the nurses you see that he’s now missing face his face and one of the greatest villains I’ve seen goes out with a bang like none other.
You should take a look at The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance! It has some wonderful CG mixed with spectacular puppet work. I think the shots where they transition from wide CG environments to up-close sets are particularly interesting
Oh my gosh! I just posted a comment about this and then happen to see this comment. Yes! I loved the show for the most part and still kinda pissed at Netflix for canceling the show, they did Jim Henson company and all the people who worked so passionately on the show dirty fr. The director and producer was told by Netflix the show was canceled 60 days after the show was released but were told not to say anything publicly for another few months from what I've heard.
I agree one added thing I didn’t notice immediately was the skeksis tongue being added with CG.

Season 6 of 'The Expanse' has just finished and i personally think has some of the most gorgeous sci fi cgi for space combat etc and would love to see your guys take on sooo many shots in it
Some of the zero-g/spacewalk effects in particular would be good to look at, like Naomi's jump from the Chetzemoka at the end of Season 5, or Amos walking around the outside of the Roci early on in Season 6.

The framerate is supposed to be different in the train scene because Neo is being affected by the red pill. We're seeing things from his perspective. The bullet time wouldn't look the same as the agents because the analyst isn't doing the exact same thing as the agents. He's not really moving faster, he's slowing down the matrix itself. That's why Neo and Trinity can understand him and why Neo is having such a hard time with it.

you guys should do the incredibles r-rated, a lot of scenes like the airplane and freeze scenes that could be really good ones
On the same lines as matrix, you guys should try out the matrix’s game! All the physics are amazing! There is also a few things I have noticed that need some work, like the crash physics, everything seems too light. But also a ton of amazing things, the green tint, the lighting, all of it is pretty cool!
Tbh I think that the crash physics are the best ever done, only complaint I have is that the car doors and stuff don’t fall off. Cars, when in high speed crash, do seem very light irl. Cars don’t weigh that much in the grand scheme of things when talking about 100‘s of miles per hour

Bunraku (2011) sports many big names and the aesthetic is of the charts. A criminally underated movie. The set, stunts, camera work. I would recommend it's version of the "Hallway scene"

Would love to see a another breakdown of old practical effects.
This is a bit left of field, but I'd love to see you guys react to some in-game effects across different video games and break down how and why some effect feel good and others don't. Things like explosions, breaking glass, water effects, etc. Think that could be a really cool thing to look at!
Doesanyone have some specific examples? despite being a massive gaming nerd im drawing a blank of the top of my head.
@@kodaxmax I think of things like explosions and effects from the Killzone games, or some of the amazing shaders used in Half Life Alyx on full bottles of liquid. I'd love to see them go into details of why an explosion in one game feels so good and another in another game feels so limp (Mercenaries 1 vs Mercs 2 is a good comparison).
Explosions in games are usually simulated in real time and/or artists don't have the time or resources to be able to run complex explosion simulations in games. Its usually down to the technical limitation of a game (whereas a movie can be pre-rendered and edited on top of) and the hardware limits. A game made to run on a lower spec system or won't be able to have as complex particle systems as others, and smaller companies won't usually have the time and resources to develop new particle systems that look better. Lots of games companies also like to keep in-house techniques to themselves, so methods to make explosions can differ a lot I imagine. The VFX tech to make films and games, while similar in art, have very different tech requirements and considerations. Its hard to compare practises in films to games because of this.
@@ZavalasAgent this is all at least partially true, but is also irrelevant? An explosion in a game, regardless of the technical side of things has a final result and a "feel" to it. Two explosions may be simulated in exactly the same way in the same physics engine across two different games, but the artistry that goes into them (effects like particles, smoke and fire sprites, physics objects interacting with that effect, other smaller effects like dirt or shock waves, sounds, etc) can all be drastically different and affect how the end product feels.
@@xGamermonkeyx Yes and an explosion with all those things would require a lot more research and power behind it, unless it's stylised a certain way of course because that can have big effects on the final feel. My point is it is difficult to go into VFX in a game from a purely film understanding because it isn't all about the way the final product may look or sound, simulating in real time in 3D space is a lot different. Like how someone on a high end PC will have a much different experience to someone on a lower spec console for example. Whereas with a film it's one video. Games will usually have very strict budget on how detailed an effect can be, how many polygons can be used in a particle system, how many background Sims are occuring... Etc. There's just so much more to consider tbh that I think would be better for maybe a more gamedev perspective rather than purely one from movies. It's hard to explain what I mean but yeah xD

Yoo, I've been watching forever and I have an early 2000s shot for you guys. The Night at the Museum, cover the mini characters that come alive. Like Owen Wilson. The packing peanuts shot from the second has held up incredibly well.
Would love to see you guys dive in to The Expanse. Amazing show with some top-notch effects (and plenty of janky ones too).
It would be interesting for you to compare old and new Doctor Who VFX. Also look at the restoration work they did for old stories.
I think there are cool, subtle effects in Wes Anderson films such as The French Dispatch that you could probably make a whole episode about.
For example in the French Dispatch:
1) the artist painting himself with the same actor in frame in three different places from three different angles
2) the waiter carrying a tray from the bottom floor to the top floor instantaneously appearing in one window after leaving another, but someone clearly in frame the entire time sweeping the stoop
Got a way back one to dig into. The Forbidden Planet. Monster footprints in sand, and on the spaceship ladder. Lots of practical stuff to explain.
You guys are SUCH an underrated channel!
On a similar tone to the Matrix, you guys should check out Dark City and some of its city-warping effects. Look for the Director's Cut!
I owe you guys big-time for enhancing one of my Christmas gigs I did this season. I'm a Santa with a background in improv from Second City, and I do personal appearances at family parties, events, etc...I interact with guests, photos, talk to kids, verbally fence with smartass teens for big laughs, etc. College kids are fun, and I met one guest starting at Cal Arts who wants to go into SFX. I took a chance, and, deadpanning, I referred something from the previous days Corridor Crew video. It blew his mind! We had a laugh, and I told him Wren was on the naughty list a while back for crashIng Niko's drone in that tree without mentioning it.
It was magic.

Still really wanting an episode that includes sound design. Specifically designers who record their own sounds and sound effects as well as including composers in a video or too. I feel it would be an interesting video.
The show is about VFX, man. It won't include sound related things.
@@wowandrss VFX artists react to good and bad stunts? I just think a single episode including sound design would be entertaining and also encompass the entirety of film making as we’ve seen and learned so much from them about different aspects so far.
I would love if you talked about the moon bandit scene from Ad Astra! It’s incredible and they have a being the scene clip too. It absolutely blew my mind the first time I saw it
Take a look at the Watchers and the creation sequence from Noah. The Watchers move like stop-motion figures, they're super cool.
Willow (1988). The whole movie is an interesting transition between analog and digital; but of course take your pick (the ILM morphing is of course amazing for it's time).
But I'm mostly impressed by the Brownies. Some of the composite shots are bad. But a lot of the shots are surprisingly well integrated.

You should definitely do Spike Jonze' Apple commercial with FKA Twigs. Most of the effects there are practical but they're absolutely mind-blowing.

You guys should cover a history of vfx explosions, and include The Matrix Reloaded semi crash because that's one of the greatest sequences I've ever seen.
I assumed the effect on Neil Patrick Harris was meant to be a specific reference to the original bullet dodge scene. In the original that had to use interpolated frames to fill in the gaps between the different cameras and it has a slight wobbly blur type effect. So when he said his new thing was called "bullet time" it seemed obvious to me that that was what they were going for. So for that reason I actually enjoyed the effect over all.

I think this scene is also referencing an earlier line of dialogue in the movie where a member of the focus groups specifically says they should do bullet time again. In the context of the whole movie taking old ideas and subverting them and making them different, this scene is then doing “bullet time” again. The same idea, different execution, so it’s not even trying to replicate the visuals of the first movie.

The silent rage from sam during the matrix section was so painful to watch. I really felt for him, there was genuine grief and pain there for a movie he may of been looking forward to seeing, and knowing that when he went to see it he wouldn't be able to NOT see all those mistakes.

@@samsimms4403 the movie was excellent actually. But most people didn't get the first 3 so I'm not surprised they didn't get the 4th either and got upset when it wasn't more of the same like they wanted.

@@Vivi2372 I thoroughly enjoyed all three of the original movies but Resurrections really just fell flat in my opinion. The lighting, soundtrack, choreography, script... everything felt off.
@@Ghostblock that's its biggest sin IMO, even if you dislike or like the story, the movie deserved to have a distinct visual style like its predecessor's had.

Please you GOT to watch this one! This last weekend I watched some of the first Supernatural season, and they had a Bloody Mary episode where she kind of teleports between mirrors. This show had some whacky vfx in it but that one when you first see her in the mirror is killing
Those effects in that episode of the Witcher are the best effects in the whole series, in my opinion. That character was so well done. It seemed to go downhill from there, for me. And the Breaking Bad scene was some of the best filmmaking ever. Such a good reveal, and so brutal for TV. What a way to kill off the "big bad".
I would love if you guys also brought in stunt people to talk about the fight scenes in Matrix Resurrections, cuz like...wow. They were...so absurdly not Matrix-y at all.
I have so many problems with the new Matrix that im just gona pretend it doesnt exist ... I mean ...musik, fights, story, visuals...it just doesnt feels like Matrix any more :/
