I have been flying F-4C for a while and I actually find the Aim-7D's as my primary source of kills most games. While using ACM allot may give the impression that the radar doesn't like to lock things, I have found that using narrow-sweep allows me to lock targets at medium to medium-low altitudes sometimes in excess of 10k. My personal strat is to get up to ~6k at the start of games and put the radar to wide-sweep to see if I can catch any climbers. I then send my Aim-7D's at them trying to give the best possible PK (many underestimate how much the missiles can actually pull up there and get slapped). I then hold my speed and see if I have a good opportunity to lob an Aim-9E at someone below me if there are no remaining threats at altitude (or maybe guns if I decided to take the pod that match. I'll usually take it if I'm not confident my team will last longer than a few minutes). If I take the gun, I'll tend to lean more towards brawling. But, if I take just the 4xAim-7D's and 4xAim-9E's, I will abuse the resulting cracked top speed, energy retention, and agility (relative to before) to just bamboozle people.
Great video! In the recent months I've become an avid F-4C enjoyer myself. I personally like to set my radar to 93km scope range at the beginning of the battle (Y+1+8), then get to ~1000kph IAS and climb at a 25° angle until I reach 7km-8km (climbing to the left/right of course). Then, I'll scan the upper altitudes for enemy aircraft with my radar and spam AIM-7Ds at them if possible (usually 1 is enough, but it can sometimes be worth sending 2). I personally carry all four AIM-7Ds simply because I would rather be able to spam them out than to wish I had more by taking less. They've served me well when I'm further away from people and they serve as a good alternative to AIM-9Es when flares are being spammed. In general, since I'm typically very high up in altitude, I have not had much of an issue with Su-25s. I've been bonked a couple times, and they should definitely not be at this BR range, but I've been relatively successful in avoiding them by staying higher up. I also only use bombs when I get an EC map since it gives me something to do on the large map. Otherwise I stick to dogfighting.
@@applecore101 AIM-7Ds really do perform much better at those altitudes (as all missiles do ofc). The nice thing is that the F-4C both has RWR and longer range missiles than most other vehicles at its BR. So you can pretty easily catch people off guard and/or react if someone is countering you with their radar.
@@Neves_23 The F-4C obviously doesn't encounter the F-14A, so there's nothing to worry about there. The issue with the F-4C now is that there are so many all aspect missiles at its BR along with a bunch of 30-35G missiles. You basically have to go high altitude and get some long range kills with the AIM-7Ds. Then you can dive down on the enemies at lower altitudes with the AIM-9Es. The F-4E is a decent grinder, but it's mainly useful as a bomber and then fighter. If you get an EC map, I recommend taking as many bombs as possible (go with the 750lb bombs, they give the most rewards). If you get a normal match, go with one set of bombs (6x 750lb bombs will kill a base). I tend to swap between carrying bombs and not carrying bombs depending on the map (personal preference and experience determine that). I ALWAYS take the full missile load. You will certainly have to learn how to use a radar if you have not already. It's important to learn how to use ACM mode, toggling radar search modes, and configuring the radar cursor. A good start with the radar cursor is setting the radar screen to rectangular and then turning off cyclic target switching (both are found in Options). Once you have those set, look up "target cue control axis" in the controls and configure those. TL;DR: Learn how to use the radars, focus on bombing and then dogfighting. Don't focus too much on bombing unless it's an EC match.
I like to stay right below contrail level and stay a min or two back from the crowd. Gives you the distance for the aim 7's and you aren't gonna be noticed like people above 18,000 feet. Enemy usually has one or two guys up above there so easy to lock on to them, get them out of the fight, then have everyone below you while you pick who you want to go after from behind.
When dealing with a su25 head on missile, just fire a rocket to divert the missile path. You can even use a heat seeking missile to divert the su25's missile and even sometime destroy it.
Really fun however going against so many premiums that have stock flares/ Chaff and the 4c having fair missiles and no flares you can really get caught with your pants down if you have a su25 behind you, I mostly use the gun but I still love F4s more of a fan of the J & E
Sometimes when i feel like not giving a fuck, i just bring 3 gunpods and 9m fuel. Choose min fuel and scream i am the speed. no one will ever catch you on your team and you are on your own when you starting to see enemy jets. head on every single enemy you can see and try to act like you are going to ram them. With that attitude you might scare maybe 2 or 3. Now you go kill slow A-10 or any enemy that was unfortunate to see you committed, at that point you only have 2 or 3 minutes of fuel Which makes you more dangerous. Profit
I want to like this plane, so I'll throw in my experiences. Quite a bit of overlap with the video. The bomb truck life is probably the best way to spade it. It can even be enjoyable, its speed means you can get your bombs to their base fast and then fly back to base to load up with more bombs. 20min fuel to ride the afterburner generously. You'll also get to the base faster than the A-10 spam on your team, just be wary of the enemies trying to kill you. Don't rush directly to the bases either, because you'll just run into enemies sooner. Go for a wide flight path on the side, and draw a line through the bases that you want to bomb. That's the approach you want to take while bombing those two bases, and you should try to be as fast as you can be while doing it (don't exceed Mach 1 when dropping, but a fully loaded Phantom bomb truck will struggle to get much faster than that.) If all goes well and you don't die, you will have dropped your bomb load and will be faced with a few choices. Haul ass back to base for more bombs. Turn on your gun computer and start hitting soft targets. Or take your missiles and go support your teammates. The cool thing is, you can usually do some combination of these things. Pay attention to your teammates nearby. If you see an opportunity to throw an AIM-9E at an unsuspecting target, do it. And don't go near an Su-25 unless you have personally seen it fire off both R-60Ms. A good match is one where you don't die, bust a few bases with bomb loads, and get a few sneaky kills along the way. And an F-4C can actually carry a team late in the match if you manage to stay alive long enough. That's really the biggest challenge.
It's cracked without the gunpod since it's bonkers fast in a straight line and making hit by R60's in a straight line . If you think you still need the gun then carry a pod or 2 of zunis for those head on passes as they work as flares . If you're at high alt with sparrows then just keep the radar in a narrow scan and look for contrails and send death at about 10km and lead the missile if the target is turning . The sparrows have a 1.8 second delay so try not to get too close
ive found eith how many all aspect misdiles you face its almost essential to take mighty mouse rockets aa flares using them in this way can flare sidewinders (yes sometimes 9L's) R60's all kinds, but sadly i havent found an effective method yet to dodge matra magics. ive found in the current meta the best loadout for winning is a single mighty mouse pod in the center and taking all 8 missiles, then going to abt 6-8000 meters, using the sparrows and ive tested the limits of aim9 b's and e's and if someone isnt oaying attention i can get a 3-3.5km shot on them
After the Su 25s dropped into the game I mainly started to use the F4C with my M1 Abrams in Ground RB... And oh boy, Zuni's, C bullpups and one 2000 lbs bomb for the sweet goodbye is the best you can get at this BR for US ground CAS... And in terms of Air Battles... Gunpods it is
I take 2 gunpods, 4aim7s, 4aim9e and 6x1000lbs bombs. i run in low at full burner and get a base because even if i get rushed by the enemy team the base will more than cover the repair cost. I turn, climb, and use my altitude advantage to get what kills i can. I have gotten as much as 7 kills with this loadout and any missiles i dont soend on enemied i will spend on the ai ground attackers. In Operations I will take 30 with more bombs in center and reserve burner. I usually am the last person on the team this way but have other games where i run down tickets by using whats left of the ammo on geound targets. The silver lion payoff for this jet due to the low repair cost and high weapons load can be massive and it is a shame that the addition of the su-25 ruined this planes SL potential.
One of the things i can recommend for this plane is take the cannon and put one on your left or right wing take all the rockets that you want for air to air fights and then in the middle take far FFAR Mighty Mouse since they can be used as flares air to air missile always goes for the rockets

I'm not a ground player and have very few tanks, none of which are top tier so I'm not sure what to recommend for you. I would imagine that you would face less IR missile threat in a ground match than air match and that radar anti air would be the biggest threat, which the f105 can defeat with chaff.
I keep as many missiles as I can because I use the aim9e to lock onto head in missiles from su25s and they using 3 Vulcans to destroy it when it come close enough
If u put the 750lb bombs under the aim9 e and 6 500lb under the wing with the armament selection u have to drop 10 500lb bombs for a base and 2 500lb bombs and 6 750 bombs for the next base u can destroy 2 bases.
I find a loadout of 12x500lbs and 6x1000lbs with the missiles AND A GUN a lot better - you can easilly destroy two bases in a single game, not loosing much when it comes to A/A loadout
Congrats! It was a super fun first phantom for me back in the day, I hope it’s just as fun for you now haha. It’s true, the radar can reach pretty far. I probably should have addressed the radar in the video, but here’s my take! The 4 main reasons I would recommend against setting your radar scope to that long of a range are: 1. The further you set your radar (as well as the wider you set the dish angle) the more interference it picks up and in my experience it makes it much harder to lock someone up. Basically the more information you feed the radar at once, the less likely it is that it will either lock the right target, or even find the target through all other contacts and ground clutter. The radar on this phantom is already fairly primitive and it could use all the help it can get when trying to guide a sparrow. I usually try to figure out the distance to my target, then set the range and dish angle as low as I can relative to the target’s position when lining up a sparrow shot. 2. The further you set the range, the smaller your radar HUD becomes and in turn the denser the information becomes. It becomes much harder to judge where a radar contact is relative to you when the scope is so small. Basically every 3 pixels makes up 1km of distance vs a 19 km or 30km scope it might be more like 15 or 20 pixels per km, allowing for more precise tracking and spacial awareness. 3. The aim-7 sparrow missile can only get a kill from ~20km in perfect conditions (high speed high alt head on) so you’re not missing out on any opportunities for a lucky moon shot or anything from 60km or something haha. 4. And lastly, unless you’re on an EC (large) map, which is 128x128km, the standard map size is only 64x64km, with enemies spawning ~50km away from you, so you don’t even get anything out of setting the range that high. At 93km+, your scope will be mostly full of ground clutter for the entire match

I recently started playing the f4c and I find if you cut your afterburners you can dodge most middles at the br even the R60m with enough practice
