Sail Life...finally! A "somewhat extensive refit" ? I'm pretty sure your refit is the most extensive on UA-cam. Some boats might have been in worse shape you begin with, like hurricane damage, etc, but the systems you've installed, the equipment you've installed, the quality of workmanship you've shown us, the forethought for said systems and equipment and rebuilds, the forethought on how you built up the mast was especially incredible, the high level things like paint choice, other materials, etc. Your refit is the highest quality, most extensive refit I've ever seen. Cheers 🍺
He’s modest as well!… thanks Mads I learnt a lot! Adventures to come with you and Ava…can’t wait!
So true, one could easly think that you have done this your hole life. Your skills and analytical approach to every thing is amazing.
So sad that an oversight on the Perkins displacement scuttled the repurposing of that motor as a geneset. I was truly looking forward to seeing that problem resolved. That is about the only fail Mads has had so far. I am certain if Ava's shengen clock wasn't near expiration Mads would tough it out and make it work. But happy to see them nearing the goal of departure on (almost) their own terms.
Check out Sailing Yaba. They're in the middle of a major refit, as in a team of shipwrights has rebuilt a soggy rotten wooden boat from the frames up to the cabin so far.
At least it is in the running with Acorn to annabella. Remember they said it was a refit and dug a hole to pour the Keel then building a saw mill to cut every board. They have to be related some way.
What a relief it is to finally see that dad boy in the water.
Oh my god - after years and years, all of a sudden i have subscribed a sailing channel ;-) Congrats you two!
I agree!! Funny comment!!
Years in the making... it's so sweet to see her finally sail.
started watching on episode 3 and have been watching ever since at my age i am glad i will have lived long enough to see athena in the water thank you mads lol
i can believe it almost 5 years gone in a blink of and eye. I know my brother is looking down from heaven and cheering on you guys.
Seeing Athena out on the water in full sail was a beautiful sight. Congratulations on your amazing achievement and now looking forward to your sailing adventures.
Mads, it looks to me as if you had tried to extract the oil while it was cold. My experience with this device is rather positive when I do it after the engine has been running for a while.
It's so awesome to see you guys sailing, almost seems surreal, but awesome! Well done!!!
I'm more than happy to help you with your drone flying, I think I'm starting to get the hang of it now, but between now and then, if you want some tips that really helped me then I'll bullet a couple below.
Fly manually - Don't use any of the intelligent flight modes as these require the use of the sensors being on, and that can make landing the drone very tricky, especially if it isn't flat calm conditions. So when you fly, turn off ALL the sensors, I mean you're on the water so there isn't much to bump into anyway.
Make a handle. I made a grab handle to attach to our Mavic drone which made landing it at sea about 10000 x easier. Although get all your shots in the first 25% of the battery and then give yourself 75% battery to get the drone back on board, it's way less stressful than when your alarms are going off as the battery is low and you're struggling to retrieve the drone.
Fly the drone in 'tripod mode' it really helps with smoother, more cinematic shots.
Buy and use some polarising ND filters, they help take some of the glare off of your shots, especially as you're on water with a white boat, everything can easily look over exposed and shiny.
In your drone settings set your shutter speed for twice your frame rate, this gives your shots a natural looking motion blur and again gives you a more cinematic shot. Don't use automatic settings, a little practice with this will pay off in future production quality. This is the main reason to use ND filters, they are like sun glasses for your drone lens and depending how bright it is when you shoot, you will need to adjust your level of filter accordingly.
And a last tip to help get your started is try and get your shots either first thing in the morning or at sun set, during the 'golden hour', the lighting is so much better that again, it makes your shots look more cinematic.
I hope that helps guys and hopefully when you're over in the UK we can grab a beer and chat all things drone and Trident 😁😁⛵️⛵️⛵️
Best of luck guys, fair winds and we'll see you soon 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
You and Mads hanging out would be an epic video!
..and make sure when it sinks the tide isn't running!!! :)
@@AthelstanEngland ha ha, touché
The timing of my video could hardly have been worse 🤣🤣🤣
@@CadohaAdventures lol.
"Somewhat Extensive" is a gross understatement regarding this refit .... enjoy the fruits of your labor and go FULL EXTENSIVE!! Safe Sailing you two!
I soo love the irony in that statement, please continue saying that
After many years of blood sweat and tears, great work! Very functional yacht!!
The drone shots of Athena sailing was thrilling. After all those years of work finally done, your ship is beautifully and elegrantly sailing to you dream life. Enjoy it fully, after all you efforts, Athena is pretty dawng spiffy!
BREAK OUT THE CHAMPAGNE!!!! Some for each of you (whether you usually drink it or not), perhaps some for Oblix, and certainly some poured on the boat and (very importantly!) some poured into the sea!
It has been a L O O O O O O N G and exciting haul for you Mads, and a wonderful new direction in life for you, Avia!! The re-build is not over--alas in boating, it is NEVER over, but now you are mobile and are able set sail for a long-awaited shakedown cruise to merry old Britain in your new floating home. May the winds always be fair, on your beam or at your back.
Be Safe, Well and Happy!!
Hi, when removing oil with these vacum pumps you need to run the engine to warm up the oil first!! :) works a lot better then ;)
Adding a piece of metal tubing just smaller than the dipstick hole to the end of the suck up hose helps immensely. You can modify the tubing on this pump to make it work effectively.
Congratulations!!! It's so great seeing Athena actually under sail. I've been watching your refit for the past few years, and I didn't think you'd ever get her going under her own power. Super happy for you guys. And no it doesn't suck!!!
Congratulations Mads and Ava!! I have watched every episode and have learned so much from your amazing account of Athena’s beautiful refit!! Thank you for your courageous vulnerability, expertise, humility and charming wit! Wishing you both oodles of joy as you skip over the waves in “good old Athena!” If you’re ever in Seattle, please give me a shout! Big hugs and lots of love. ♥️
Congratulations after five years of completing boat refit tasks. Amazing technical installs.
So awesome after several years of watching you relentlessly churn out progress week after week to see you at the beginning of your journey with Athena, and now Eva. Fair well in your journey Mads. You are an inspiration to all that have a dream.
I must say… I am watching this channel because of all the DIY stuff… But I am soo excited to see you finally sail the boat you have been spending so much time on!
Enjoy!
Athena under sails and Seeker waiting for insurance before getting into the water!! What a time to be a UA-cam junkie!! Congrats on all the hard work.
What an exciting milestone! Congrats Mads. It's crazy the amount of work that you've put in to get to this point. Very excited for y'all.
Beautiful Boat....if anyone ever deserved to enjoy the fruits of their labor it is definitely you two !
You did it!!! The great white whale is out to sea! Cant believe how long I have been watching you do all this work. I first caught you on the episode you bought Athena. Watched them all. Well done.
And so the “SAIL” life begins !! Just got a picture from Beelzebub, he was wearing a arctic jacket and mittens, that place down there must be real cold right now !!
So great! That wooden toe rail gives her a really classy look, while the dodger makes her look cool and a bit "expeditiony" at the same time!
It must feel absolutely brilliant to be able to reintroduce Athena to her natural element.
Well done x 10^6
The glorious sanding was worth it. Athena is a beautiful sailing vessel!
Well I am a year late to the party, but I love to see Athena under sail at last! Awesome ! Great job Mads and Ava
AVA! Hand-sewing the lettering!!! You are a real trooper and an awesome team player! Kudos to you!
The burning question of the day is: Will Sail Life reach 100k subs before they leave, or not?
I think reaching that goal would be a terrific "Sail Away" gift for Mads and Ava.
This channel certainly deserves so much more then 100k subs. Such a detail refit, entertainment and proper DIY education 👌
What a truly wonderful moment to see you sailing along after all the incredible work you have put into Athena - simply magical.
cheers to that
She looks lovely sailing along ! 5 years of my life watching your channel 😂 LOVE IT !
After 5 years... FINALLY...!!! HURRAH... Can't believe that we are together now for 5 years... But because of you Mats we bought in March also a yacht(ok.. Motor, not sail) but you have been a great inspiration... Love from Prague to both of you!!!!
Congrats to Mads & Eva on your first sail ! she looks pretty nice guys !
“Underway! Shift Colors”
Congratulations, you two!
🎊🎈🍾🎉
She moves, she really moves. Hahaha that's amazing to finally see her out on the water. Well done 👏. That's a massive amount of effort you put and so glad to finally see it pay off
You rock dude! Happy, very happy, to see you under sail with a first small “shake down”. A new world with lots of new, salty adventures awaits! impressive devotion, dedication and persistence! Really! Congratulations!
So nice to see Athena using those sea legs ! Looking pretty spiffy mads. Fingers crossed, all things come in soon. 💙💚👍👍⛵
"If it's going to break, it'll break out there" 🤣 Congratulations on getting Athena out for a bit of a shake down. 🤞You can get the gremlins out of the system.
I have been following your journey for all these many years. I've said it before, your patients is amazing.
I have some thoughts for some issues and items noticed.
1- Ava was looking for shelves in the V berth cabin. Problem was you could not fit the shelf into the opening. Solution - get measurements and add 3-4 " to the width. then cut them in half. Insert the 2 halves overlapped then spread them out ounce inside, securing them in the middle. The clothes' will not mind the seam.
2- looking at the cardboard on top of the island to protecting it. Solution I believe a store like ikea sells "Shade making " supplies. Get the width of the island and make 2 "shades" of 1 for brown paper and 1 for a roll of 10mm clear plastic. Affix the "shades" to the underside of the island facing the setae. One above the other. Just pull a length of shade- paper or plastic to cover the island and then, rip off when done or dirty. If still useable allow to retract..
3- Storm food- When sailing during a storm you may not be able to cook a hot meal. solution- pick up a number if Military style MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). All that is needed is to open them up and add water. There is an exothermic plate in the pouch that will heat up the meal and you can eat right out of the pouch.
4- Medical issues Solution -There are full medical kits available for sale. They are usually bought by "preppers" but contain all of the supplies needed to do minor surgery. (needles, scalpels, etc.)$230 -$250 This should cover you while at see for just about any type of emergency.
5- Maintenance/repairs-There may come a time when you are at sail and you won't be able to do maintenance or chores. Prepare a zip lock bag with the required filer/ gasket etc. If you prepare a instruction sheet listing what supplies and tools needed and insert it into a plastic sheet protector, Ava would be able to handle the job. When the time comes everything will be together. You've got 2 engines with different filters for oil, fuel, spark plugs, etc. which can get confusing.
As you can see, I have been laying awake thinking about the possible problems you two can face. I am a grandfather and don't want anything to happen to you to. I wish you were closer so that I could "Hold the screw, while you tighten it". Good luck on your journeys.
One thing to add; and this is not just a "nice to have":
Make sure you don't use conventional cordage at the bottom of the weather cloths when heading offshore. They need to have bungy cord attaching them to the toerail. They can scoop up a considerable mass of green bowwave when the rail goes under at speed, and then as the boat staggers back upright as it slides off into a trough, that same mass of water, hemmed in by that high barricade, will very likely bend the stanchions. I'm not just regurgitating what I've read, this is bitter experience.
Big congratulations to both of you. You both look very relaxed and happy out on the water - and so does Athena.
Congratulations! Sure made me smile and I'm sure it did you too to see you sailing.
Wonders will cease to amaze me……… Congratulations!.
My heart sang when I saw you guys SAILING! Congratulations and the best of wishes from a very long term viewer. Thank you so much!
Congratulation for your first sail on Athena!!! You did a great renovation.💪
Congratulations!
I can’t believe I’ve been watching you for over 5 years. It’s been such a journey.
Cheers
After a couple of years of watching I can finally say that was really (spiffy)!
wow sails out and light winds on a calm sea. After 60 months of hard work you must be elated. Congratulations
I've heard you talk of this "sailing" thing for a while now. Glad to finally have an example of what it actually looks like! LOL Seriously though, CONGRATULATIONS!! You sir, have definitely reached a lot of final milestones. Fair wind and following seas to you both!
I'm guessing Mads is biting his tongue to keep from giving us his true feelings about the h.o. alternator situation.🙄 The boat looks great under sail, what an accomplishment!
Time for our Danish Viking to begin "touring" the coasts again... congrats Mads!
AWESOME. Congrats to you both. I hope you take a moment to do NOTHING, watch the sunset and just hug. You deserve it
When you mentioned "415 videos' it really hit home how long I've been following this channel.
Congratulations Mads and Ava! Can’t wait for the next steps in the adventure!
Congratulations! It's so awesome to see Athena under sail after so much work. Good luck getting those last bits finished up, I can't wait to see what comes next.
Hi Guys. Mads you did warm the engine before extracting the oil? Our extractor pump is the same and it works great 4-5 mins at the most. Top Tip: Put half a liter of clean oil in the hot engine to flush the dirty oil out before extracting that too. Drone footage "what we have learned" in our video next week OTB 108. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
What an amazing feeling must've been to let her fly again! 👍👍
Congrats brother! A sail has never been more deserved
I'm so glad for you Mads. Finally getting to start your sail on Athena. After so many years of dedicated hard work, to finally see her moving under sail is awesome. I'm sure that Leo at Sampson boat is one of the only guys to do as though of a "somewhat of extensive refit".
Wonderful to watch. Happy to see Athena under sail.
She looked bu ta ful with her sails up no matter how windless it was, that’ll change soon thanks again for sharing all that you do…
been watching since the beginning. every video. This refit is the most extensive and the best one on youtube. Can't wait for the sailing videos to begin
Oh dear.. i almost can´t believe I actually just saw athena sailing. She looks preeeeetty dang spiffy with those white cloths up!
MADS you´ve come a really long way. I admire your patience, dedication and skills. Not many people could and would have done that in such a way like you did it! You really can be proud of yourself! Congratulations!
She really looks good with the sails out!!
Athena looks beautiful and it sails!!
Congratulations
Such a sight for sore eyes watching Athena sailing after all these years. So AWESOME! Congrats to to Captain Mads and the Admiral Ava! 🥳
Wahoo! Athena flies again! Way to go Mads and Ava. Looking forward to seeing that "To Do" list empty. Take care and have a great week.
What an odyssey to get to this point. Congratulations !!!!
Finally, after 5 Years of watching your channel, you are afloat, totally happy for you both, look forward to your travels, fair winds and all the best of luck 😎
Such a magical moment - congratulations on the (near) completion of an absolutely epic project! Your videos have been an inspiration for many thousands of people over the years - thank you and bon voyage!
You must be congratulated to have reached this milestone. It is remarkable. Cheers, Richard
We are so happy to see both of you on the water! Thank you for entertaining us always. Btw we love Ava and are so glad to finally get to know her.
I would want you on my crew you do not see any barrier you can not get over under through around or any other way. You are a soft spoken get er done type a personality. God loves you my man.
I cannot believe you are really sailing at last. All those months & months you were toiling with the osmosis, rebuilding the deck or strengthening the frames it seemed an impossible dream to me. But you believed and did it. Congratulations 👍😊
Congratulations on your maiden sail post refit.
Had to laugh, tho, at the build-as-you-go ….. reminded me of hectic scenes on various warships I served in, emerging from a dockyard for initial sea trials, with cables festooned everywhere, engineers frantically securing nuts and bolts, some urgent/essential items running late, the to-do list seemingly expanding as each piece of equipment was tuned and re-tuned ….
We got there in the end. And so will you. Then as now, it’s the crew that make it all work. Cheers to you two … 🥂🎉🇬🇧
Congratulations guys! You're sailing, a new chapter begins!
Hi Mads and Ava. Congratulations, A momentous achievement. A real high quality refit/rebuild which has taken a great deal of time - but worth every single day you spent doing and documenting it. Good luck with the rest of the shake down and fine tuning of your fine vessel and it’s many systems. Do not give up on the PELA - it really should not take that long at all there is something drastically wrong - you did get the oil warm first- didn’t you? Good idea to reach out to your fellow warrior 38 owner (Cadoha) - if I recall correctly he carried out a very useful modification to the drone which makes launch and more importantly recovery less ‘dramatic’ without altering the essential flight characteristics. Good luck with the next steps.😀👍⛵️
After 5 years and all that work….you guys did it! That’s so awesome mads! Great job and keep the videos coming!
I have watching your videos for years. Really nice to see the boat almost ready to set sail. Keep up the great work 👍
Congratulations on the milestone of putting Athena back under sail! Awesome work and fingers crossed that the last few tasks will go smoothly!
Congratulations on getting her actually sailing.
I’ve been watching since you were working on the deck. I really appreciated when the sails were up. Congratulations!
So great to see Athena under sail! And all those tasks in the 'done' column! Also.... I felt that Bluetooth comment in my bones. Early versions were sooooo tedious with pairing. These days it's a non-issue.
What a beautiful brand new boat! Cheers Ava & Mads!! 🍻🍻
Congratulations to you both. Athena looks beautiful out on the water. You have worked incredibly hard rebuilding her, and yet still managed to entertain thousands of viewers. Great job!
Great to see you get underway and do a little sailing. Here's to wishing you fair winds and following seas.
Bravo really great to see that girl under canvas! Your flag! Michigan and Denmark never looked sooooo good! Enjoy that beautiful boat!
Absolutely stunning. Watching you for all those years, seeing you on water sailing … it was worth it. This was very emotional to watch, I have to admit. :-)
That's more like it Mads. It was a really good 21 minute episode.
Wow! Athena looks majorly "Spiffy or a million bucks" using your words. I'd say she is "well tidy, first rate or just damn awesome."
The end result is quite extraordinary, so is the amount of "D.I.Y" you have done mostly on your own. I know it's not the end result or that it is D.I.Y. There's some real skills shown throughout.
Nice to see the sails up and on a mooring ball and not in the marina.
Good luck to you both and I hope you enjoy the U.K
Really liked the drone shots. I have a DJI magic mini. I’m too freaked out about flying it from my boat. So....if you get tips from your friend, please include these on future videos.
It’s nice to see Athena sailing, But....I really enjoyed watching all the work you did over the past 5 years.
Sail Life is my Sunday treat.
Thanks for all your efforts to share.
WOW...WOW...and WOW. This is BIG news, Athena is Sailing!!! Albeit slow she is moving under sail. Congrats to you both and looking forward to more sailing adventures.
Good decision to fit the plotter under the hood. Mine was at the helm and it was a real pain on watch. Warm well protected crew stay alert longer.
WOW. congrants!!! after four years of following Im happy to admit that dreams do really come true. thank you, Mads.
I've been watching your channel for years, and for some reason I never thought I would see you on the water and ready to sail. Congrats and good luck on your voyages, you've built a great boat!
I know exactly what you mean . Forgotten what the end goal was . . . . . a sailboat at sea
Congratulations, Mads and Ava! What a milestone to have reached! Thanks for all the weekly doses of positivity and creativity that keep my cruising dreams alive! One day...
FANTASTIC to see you out on the water, Ava is adorable and a wonderful catch for a guy that works all !! the time. Here's to wishing you both a lot of smooth sailing and tail winds everywhere you go. It has been an interesting ride along the way and I am just tickled you saw it all through against the odds and heading off to live your dream. Sail Safe Sail life !!
As a last ditch effort, you can drive a screwdriver completely through your oil filter and use that for leverage. The last time I did this, 1968, I wrapped a chain around it and attached it to the jack under my car. Jacking it up spun the filter off.
Really awesome shot from the drone. Y'all can now kick back and enjoy- how exciting!
Great to see Athena sailing! Well done!
What a journey! Fantastic! Very much looking forward to Sail Life, post-refit. Congrats.
