Android 13 has been released and it brings a few interesting updates to Google's Pixel devices, and eventually to other phones too. The main thing is more privacy, more customization and more Bluetooth. Take that iOS 16!

The only thing that spoils a great phone and UI imo, will Google ever learn, I don't think so, I'd prefer to use the stock launcher but this one major flaw forces me to use a third party launcher, shame on Google
I still wish Android would bring back the dessert naming convention. Made it more fun and different than normal number increments.

The fact that now permissions are more separated is a huge lifesaver for developers, too. Before, we were forced to request location permissions for things that weren't related to actual location, giving us lots of bad reviews from customers thinking that we were harvesting location data. This is great!
Glad they made the change
Samsung implemented half of these features like a year ago 😉

There's nothing underwhelming to me about improving the OS. Takes a lot more work than to just ignore broken stuff and add more features
Amen. As much as software developers love to develop features, maintenance and upgrades always differentiate poor quality software from excellent quality software.

Bluetooth and cellular connectivity is greatly improved. I was having all sorts of connectivity issues on my P6 Pro, but they all disappeared when I got 13 (I enrolled in beta as my phone was borderline unusable).
As a language teacher, that language setting bit, while it might be a tiny change, is going to be huge for me. Hopefully it works with keyboards too.
Oh man, being able to set keyboard language for different contacts in messenger apps would be amazing. But I doubt I'll ever get that feature.
Keyboards already have multilanguage support
@@Ignacio.Romero Yeah, but you can either inconveniently change it back and forth a ton, or, if they use a broadly similar alphabet, put up with bad autocorrects. Would be nice if it just knew to use a particular language when in a particular app.

Being able to set app-specific languages absolutely is my fav feature. Nothing is as annoying as having some rather horrible translated game or app, to then not even have any setting in the app to change languages. I'm kinda surprised that it even took that long for this feature to finally exist.
Android is finally catching up with iOS.
Same, the surprisingly only meaningful update for me
Im not interested in Android 13, its boring watching software reviews. I prefer watching Linus reviewing hardwares.

I love how OnePlus had a bunch of launch features on my phone and removed them in favor of a bigger number on the Android version. 😃
@@AlphaSnowLion I forget what exactly I was mad about since it's been a year or two but googling around it seems I'm not the only one who is upset, with many people saying not to update & listing removed features / broken functionality. I didn't have a choice since my carrier version just does whatever Verizon choose but if you are looking at OnePlus I would suggest you read through some of those lists
Apparently they sent out an update that removed the X-ray camera feature on the Oneplus 8 Pro.
@@AlphaSnowLion Well for starters, they removed portrait video from Oneplus 9pro in Android 12 also they removed nightscape video ( a feature someone will never use cause it is crap but it was still cool cause they are trying something new ) then they removed it. They completely changed the simple and great looking camera app interface into Oppo's camera interface. They removed "parallel apps" in Android 12 and many more features that made Oxygen os "OXYGEN OS". To be fair they did add some new features that made things better but it is no use removing OS DEFYING features and adding imitations of other OS features (ahem ahem color OS) and their Oxygen OS 12 was a disaster with a lot of bugs that made me regret purchasing a Oneplus mobile overlooking Samsung's flagship.
In my opinion, Oxygen OS 11 peaked so hard that it had to fall down into Oppo's hands to kill itself. Hope the coming Oxygen OS 13 will be bug-free at least, I am not looking forward to the flashy new features they announced, I just want it to be flashy, simple, and light just like how Oxygen OS was.

Bluetooth LE audio is definitely exciting. Shame it's limited to so few chipsets for now.
At first it sounded cool, being able to connect my headphones (client) to multiple devices (servers).. Then he clarified it was multiple clients per server, and not what I imagined :p So no having your headphones play both computer and laptop audio without re-pairing each time. And no ability to make a network of hubs projecting same audio so you can move around in your house as if it was a wifi-headset with multiple routers.

It would be really nice if you could choose to group items in the quick access panel. Eg: Having Wi-Fi and Mobile Data as seperate buttons. Also being able to just turn them on and off with a single click. Rather than going into Internet and then turning those switches on or off. Going back to how it was in Android 11 basically.
5:45 Finally!
Multiple languages for different apps support!
You have no idea how stupid it is that that didn't work before.
For some reason most apps don't have a setting that lets you change languages, they follow the system set language only.
It's such a pain for bilinguals who want to use local apps in their own language and others (like UA-cam) in english
I remember around October 2019 - October 2021, I loved the customization on my Pixel. I loved how you could change the fonts, app icon shapes, and the icon styles. I really wish they would bring those back. Other than that, I really enjoy the new update!
As a person using Android 9 rn, didn't realize they removed ivon shape customization 😅

Having the option to choose language per app is useful for those limited apps that doesn't have your language or missing certain strings, and defaults to English. Something that should have been fixed in Android 7, but apps like Google calendar still defaults to English if it doesn't have a specific string in your language. What I mean is that if language 1 isn't available, it should go to language 2.
I like the new vibration haptic that plays when you open the camera
For me I absolutely hated 12, it would crash my apps whenever I minimized them, I got terrible performance and battery life. As soon as I upgraded to 13 all that went away, phone started acting almost 100% better. I am "all for" fix your stuff, I do not care nor use nearly any of those new features, what I want/need is for the OS to work and work well. Android 13 does that, and I for one could not be happier.

After switching to Android 12 from One Plus' Oxygen OS there have been SO many basic operations that take 2 or more swipes/taps where they would only take 1 input in Oxygen. I hope 13 resolves a lot of these little headaches.
I hated Android 12 so much to the point I got another phone which is 11. The interface is horribly bad at minimizing amount of taps need to perform an action and in some ways took users back to early smartphone days where screens were super tiny so they were forced to make do with multiple taps at the time.
...and I'm honestly surprised no one seemed to really care about this issue beyond a small complaint.

Quick tip for everyone who wants to use the languages feature but can't find the app they want to change the language off. It works for most apps, but the menu only shows apps that have written in their manifest that they support multiple languages.
If you use ADB shell and disable the flag settings_app_locale_opt_in_enabled, it will show all apps and work for most apps (in my experience).
Here's the command to do that if you wish (it's safe): adb shell settings put global settings_app_locale_opt_in_enabled false

i actually love that you can set language settings per app. One of my favourite features so far
Definitely. I think every OS should have such a functionality: set language by users and apps for the sake of multilingual individuals and families. And sometimes apps fall back to languages you don't know because they do not support your primary display language and you have no control over which language it falls to. This is plain ridiculous.
Why though? I'm fluent in 5 languages, but I see no reason not to use English everywhere, which isn't even my first language.
@@Shinkajo Sometimes English isn't available. Sometimes it's nicer to have local apps like the bank or public transport apps in the local language while the rest are in English.

I have been waiting for that language setting for god knows how long! Finally!
It disabled all vibration on my Pixel 4XL and added more unnecessary animations that slow things down. They also need to let us just pick our own colors for Material You, I have a synthwave styled wallpaper, so the one color selection with shades of pinks and blues look nice, but it makes text windows and other things this sickly pastel yellow/orange color. The media player got bigger to show off art while shrinking the buttons (or clumping them closer together), making it more likely to hit a button you didn't wanna press when you simply wanna change songs in the car.
I'm in the same boat as you. They aren't actually making custom color pallets based on your wallpaper, they're just giving you a few options from a set of premade pallets, so it's pretty likely that you'll have one color that sticks out like a sore thumb.
Unlock Developer's Options in the settings by clicking multiple times on your OS Build Number. Once there scroll down until you see options for Animation speed 😉
You can even disable or slower them if you wish.
@@jankohrajko it still surprises me more people dont know about this
Honestly android 13 is way efficient and smooth with animation, in my case it is taking less memory space too. 200MB less.
Funny how my Pixel 4 XL feels brand new after the update! Everything is snappy and super smooth. I did a factory reset and started from scratch tho no backup or upgrading on top of 12.
You can tell the amount of compression UA-cam is doing in the first second of the video with all those confetti. Linus' face basically turned into 360p momentarily. Reminded me of that Tom Scott's video.

The Auracast is something that will be a must-have for some guilds, for example listening to your tunes while riding with a pillion on a bike. It'll stop being: you can speak or you have a phone connected. I'm sure in no time after the launch, we'll have some apps to enable voice and music to be relayed by your phone.
It's a great update and the new privacy options are great. Better customization was super easy to setup. It runs well and there are also new battery optimizations!
7:00 I think auracast is what I am most excisted for, specifically for motorcycle/offroad helmet intercom systems (i guess this is kind of unrelated to android, and more about bluetooth specs). As it is, its a janky patch work system of some peoplue using older blutooth protocols that can only communicat to one or two other devices, or cardo and senas propirtary proximity party chat system. It would be cool to have a proximity party chat via something like auracast, that works seamlessly with all helmet intcoms.
If only every manufacturers can update their phones as soon as Android launches a new version, they would be more appealing compared to iOS
That was the idea behind project Treble if I recall correctly.

IOS ? You only a paying beta tester with everyday annoying patches
The HUGE difference between apple and any other device however is the hardware. You can update your Pixel phone right away, no problem. But other companies like Samsung for example need to update their firmware drivers before the phone can be updated.
Besides.. even if an android phone would take 2 years instead of 2 months (max) to update I still would prefer it over an iOS device lol.
7:06 Hey i remember that from Moto X4, it had a feature from Tempow, called Tempow Audio Profile (eg, TAP), that allows the phone to send Bluetooth audio to 4 completely different devices, whether speakers, headphones, earbuds, etc.
It actually works damn well, even today, you can control volume on each device individually, from phone and the Bluetooth device (changing volume will show change on phone too).
And audio is synced very well too, so you could make a DiY TWS earbud, using 2 completely different earbuds (Though likely, without the battery case and cool features of today's TWS buds).
Moto X4 was also basically the only device that had that multi Bluetooth feature from Tempow, so everyone with a Moto X4 was basically a exclusive early adopter of that cool feature ^^.

Android 13 definitely feels more of a refinement/polish than a revolutionary update. Also, I have a Pixel 5 and I've been using the hold down home button to ask Google for awhile now. But so far, 13 is working well.
7:17 Will this be on Android TV? It would be really nice to be able to maybe get different audio devices working together if the timing could be properly synced. Like say a sound bar with wireless subwoofers, and then some bluetooth speakers at the back of the room to work as satellites, or even a different soundbar in a different room if you're constantly walking between rooms working on stuff.

Truly impressive. Only got these features for a few years now in manufacturer roms. Now they only need to put in like 100 features still missing and stock android may actually be usable again.
I've only ever had Samsung's, this video was as much a learning experience of how much one ui fills in the gaps of stock Android as much as it was on Android 13!

I'm looking forward personally to samsung's Android 13 based OneUI 5, They're already out with a OneUI 5 Public Beta that from what I've heard has a fairly large amount of new features such as a PROPER battery health measurement (coming in a future beta build and Possibly similar to what iOS has) and also features a very wide range of colors for their Material you feature (Not limited to 3 automatically selected colors), MUCH Improved Animations and Stability, You can now copy text from images on the gallery (Previously it was accessed via Bixby Vision PS: Laugh All you want but Bixby is actually good now.), Upgraded clipboard, New and very much welcome gestures for multitasking (Swiping up with two fingers from the bottom of the phone) and Likely even more that I still am yet to discover.
Also I still think that the quick panel of Pixel Experience is significantly worse than the older one that is thankfully still in OneUI 5
I'd also like to add that Samsung has already had the same (If not better) Cross device functions and functionality for around 2 years now if I remember correctly
And if you don't like the native theming, Samsung's "good lock" app has a theme maker that lets you edit any color individually.

My biggest issue was that context aware suggestions on the bottom were locked to 4 initial suggestions (all samsung apps) and never updated anymore until they patched it after a month or so.

It would be nice to use an Android phone as a ChromeOS webcam to make Google's ecosystem a bit more of an... ecosystem rather than a ton of Google products that have a just enough of integration to make you want more.
I really appreciate the notifications and privacy controls. But, that clipboard widget tho 🤤
When will they add custom theme colours? I'm dying to have the dracula theme!
Downside: Android 13 restricts access to /Android/data/, meaning that file managers are unable to access apps' config files, log files, etc stored in their respective folders.
@Brylan android fanboys were crying apple wouldn't let you access system files with apps you found on the internet lol.
I think one of the previous versions restricted access to android/obb, which can be bypassed by allowing that app to install apps from unknown sources. I hope they'll find a solution for android/data too.
Bye game mods lol
@Brylan but not good for emulators, ports of PC games, etc that require you to edit configuration files and check log files with a file manager
@Brylan yes, that is true. The issue right now is that AFAIK there's nothing like that.
4:49 its good to see google treading apple's footsteps (good way)
i wish they added a feature for when you saved a pdf or downloaded a file you get a window for chosing where to save, like windows, instead of just saving in an folder it chooses
The fact that Android is just now getting the ability to only share certain photos with apps instead of all of them is insane to me, they’ve got things like reverse wireless charging implemented yet it too this long for a basic security feature like photo selection?
Android peaked at 11. 12 removed so many options and added pointless steps to the most basic functions, all for the sake of a sleak design.
The pixel phones have been my go to, but if stock android keeps removing simple options, I'll have to look elsewhere next time.
What options did 12 remove and what pointless steps did they add. Curious here as I'm using a Samsung running on Android 12 and I'll be moving to stock soon
Yeah, stock android is quite bad next to Samsung's implementation that's always 2 or 3 os versions ahead in terms of features and ease of use.
@@gamemoves2415 do not
@@gamemoves2415 My big turn-off is that 11 had the brightness slider coming in one downward swipe. 12 needs two swipe which I definitely loathe
I think A8 was the peak, and the rest was just an effort to keep up with iOS. I don't feel like i would feel the absence of features added later than that. They just keep adding and reverting features like it's a weekly update, but no, it's a yearly update that probably only 15% of android devices will manage to receive.
The lock screen home controls would make a lot of sense if it had a geofencing option so it only worked without a passcode when near your home wifi.
You guys deserved my like at the very moment I saw the scene where you're dancing wearing headphones!
Howdy folks, I'm Android 13. Look at my trucker hat!
But seriously, even though I don't use Android anymore, I do respect how generally ahead they are with various features compared to iOS.
I had a feeling that someone was going to make the Team4Star joke. A perfect 😂 moment.
Android 13 here meanwhile I am stuck on Android 9. We should get software updates like Iphones but we don't.
We do, just mainly with Samsungs newer mid range and high end phones. Mine has 4 years of promised updates
Samsung user here........ We do
Sony user here. Still stuck on Android 8 :(
Newer Samsung flagship and midrange devices surprisingly have the longest software support for any android device.
Don't bother with the change. Android 9 is a great OS. The newer ones removed a lot of functionalities that it has, and makes life hard for some people ie me. Just keep the phone as is, maybe use a custom rom for it but with older android instead of the newer ones.
5:39 Finally a way to avoid shitty translations in apps. You always had to chose which apps you want to sacrifice to translation demons, local apps or american apps. That's enough of a feature to finally switch my old phone.
Thank you so much! It work!
i think it would be cool if being in a "call" didnt automatically tank audio quality across the device. if you try to listen to music or watch a video while something is using the "call" audio channel, the audio gets destroyed to sound like a call. which also probably means that call audio isnt nearly as bad as it sounds, its just being crushed for some reason? this has been a thing since i got my first phone and i never see anyone mention it. i was in a playstation party a few days ago and the stream audio was terrible because the voice chat is categorized as a call.
This is an issue with Bluetooth. The Bluetooth "music" mode uses bandwidth allocated for the microphone, once in call you lose this bandwidth. I think this has been fixed in Bluetooth 5 but to take advantage of this you need both a device and headphones that are Bluetooth 5 compatible
@@peco_17 my wireless ear buds are bluetooth 5, but ive had this happen with no headphones at all
paul already said why it crushes other audio, but call audio is just that bad. basically to save bandwidth back in the day they would cut your audio down to a small range (that voices usually fall into) and then shift it up or down so they could fit multiple calls on one wire. when mobile phones and digital calling came out a lot of it was on the same infrastructure, and if it wasn't they wanted to be compatible with older phones, and now were stuck with low quality calls.
this is also why hold music is very hit or miss, as if it goes outside the range its awful, but some companies get music specifically made to be in that range so it sounds ok (usaa is notably good)
I've heard some funky stuff about virtualization in android 13, which is what I'm mostly excited about honestly. Can't wait to put arch on my phone.
And that way I can stick anything shady in a VM so I don't have to sell my soul to our corporate overlords just to send a cat picture to my friends.
Icons adapting to your Monet theme was already possible in Android 12.0, Fox's Magisk Module Manager is an app which does it.
Waiting since 2019 for LC3 plus codec that would allow sub 20ms latency (ideally 5-10ms is the best, like standing 5 meters from the cabinet) in bluetooth audio devices, so I could finally play guitar processed by VST without any wires!
Right now I have to use APTX LL (low latency) devices (transmitter + receiver) which have 40ms just for sending audio, plus you have processing chain that could take away 10-20ms, and it's still hard to play sixteenth notes above 120-150BPM
A quarter note at 60bpm will last exactly 1 second. Sixteenth would be 250ms (formula for 16th is: 15 / BPM = seconds).
120bpm @ 16th is 125ms.
150bpm @ 16th is 100ms.
So if your signal is processed and sent back to you at 50-60ms after you pluck the string, it means you would have trouble playing anything faster than 120-150 BPM, since it would be taking almost half the time of the note.
I've been die-hard android since I had my first smart phone, including several tablets and android TV. Lat year I got a job where my company would cover the payments on a new phone, so I went iPhone, because price was always a deterrent and I didn't want any bugs for work communication.
I kept the iphone at my desk, and continued using my galaxy a20 as a daily driver. At least until my a20 started to get REAL sluggish. I switched sim cards and I'm pretty sold on iPhone now. Now, I haven't owned a flagship android device in a while, but the software is really what makes all the difference. The fact is that most people just use an iPhone, and issues like pictures not sending in full quality, having to use zoom or teams for video calling, and most importantly not getting updates after a short period of time killed my interest in android phones.
Ideally I don't want to spend more than 300-400 on a phone, they're not precious to me and I don't need a lot of power. But, the cheap android options functionally sucked after about 2 years. No bug fixes and drastically degraded performance with no new android always made my phone a necessity to upgrade after 1-2 years. Sorry, but as much as I love tech and customization, I'll be getting an iPhone SE if my next comapny doesn't cover a phone purchase. Migrating to a new phone from apple is MUCH easier, and I'm glad that's a headache I wold experience on android again. I'll take an older design and worse cameras for the price in favor software that lasts.
