Google needs to make a tiny AI model that runs locally and can tell if a message should be answered with a LLM (Gemini) or the normal assistant (Google). this would really speed up most tasks.

Worst of all that they removed a lot of features from Google Assistant and didn't add them to Gemini. It is a slow app because it works from the cloud.
THIS. like dude you could have easily made it so that, it could do basic stuff on your own device. but more advance stuff needs cloud

your expectation here isn't correct. the goal of removing features was to remove some tech debt, unrelated to the llms.

not true. if you were running a llm on your phone, it would be even **slower**. it's slow because a. the llm is so large b. the servers aren't fast and c. the gemini app doesn't stream the responses yet.
however i agree that the simplest intents can be recognized locally.

gemini nano has subpar quality compared to gemini pro.
Gemeni is not ready yet but surely it will be much more usable in the future
The future is going to be crazy. Imagine saying. "Hey, google, text my mom how to cook a chicken."
This is a beta version, far from a full version ready to be released. I'm guessing they're going to show it's true potential once they launch their new phones Pixel 9 on Android 15.

I don't get why they didn't just integrate Gemini to Google Assistant. What's the need for a whole separate app?
The thing about Gemini is that Gemini is more better at images and googling, while Google assistant is more better at simple tasks and daily voice commands, In addition with Gemini being under development so it is better to have a separate app, Just like Google and Google Chrome.
It's because, although very similar, their intended use cases are different from each other. Google Assistant focuses more on automating tasks for improved productivity (Home) and Gemini is more about original creative production (text, art) through ai, but I do agree they should marry the two

I stopped using Gemini as an assistant within two days of downloading it. It couldn't take commands quickly when I was driving. Moreover it's slow at everything. It's a great chat bot, but I agree Google assistant is the best

My sentiments exactly. As it is Gemini is like how Google assistant was back in 2016. I don't understand Google's destructive changes for everything that they have that's already successful.

I was trying play music but Gemini just open the app and start to give me some options or some tutorials instead to just play the fcking playlist. That was annoying, and the another thing is annoying is I can't open the Gemini App without Gemini try to change GA, everytime I use Gemini at the end need change again to GA.
I hate that, I just want the use Gemini like a chatbot or something like that not my assistant. But I have no choice. It's all or nothing.

Exactly my friend bought s24 ultra. The main camera is worse than my s22 ultra (poor white balance and exposure and contrast).
It's 3x camera's edge detection is also worse than my s22 ultra. And the downgraded long range zoom .
@mlloser8318 yep , but its a newly launched phone, Samsung launched an update today let's see if anything get fixed with the first 2-3 updates and if they fix it at the end I guess it's fine since you have Time to keep the device for 7 years without issues..mostly..

That was a crazy comparison. This just shows how far ahead GA is. But I love both. GA is more on everyday commands which it was built for over the years to do. Whereas Gemini is more on generative commands. It helped me the other day come up with different names for a letter. I wouldn't mind Google keeping the two but allowing our phones to distinguish which commands would be better for either assistant. Now that would be INSANE 😬😬
I think it's better for google to integrate Gemini into Google assistant, that way it would be way better.

I think rather than a different app, Google should integrate Gemini into the Google assistant, which would be best of both worlds.
More creative tasks should be handled by Gemini and regular task should be handled by Google assistant.

I'm not sure why the functionality had to be reduced. Both apps still exist on your device. Gemini hands certain things off to assistant, so why does it not handoff the other things too? I'd get if this was a beta run but it's not. They're advertising to everyone that you switch within Google assistant.
For Gemini to be great, it needed to have all of the assistant functionality from the start. It's cool but most definitely not ready for primetime.

I reached the same conclusion using both. Google Assistant still works perfectly with the smartphone's screen off to tell the time or weather forecast, and the Gemini needs the screen to be unlocked to respond. In addition to Google Assistant being much faster.

Its far from perfect, but I think its awesome. I can ask really complex questions, etc.
Gemini assistance app will help v.much for the person whose English language is the second language,while the is having a conversations with. It will boost up the English speech skills.
I tried Gemini for about a day but switched back to regular assistant due to the lack of alarm routines. That's something I use everyday.

cause gemini is still in beta (as you can see). It's generally a lot slower. It would be too much of a change, without being better in all areas. It's good that they didn't replace google assistant with gemini just yet. To me it's unusable at the moment and just a gimmicky tool

Gemini is still not fully integrated for assistant functionalities , and in my own testing if you wan't to get consistent assistant features you must always start form home screen, otherwise it will prioritise generative text responses. a solution at the top of my head for now would be to use different wake up phrases like hey google for assistant focus with gemini boost or something, where hey gemini will always for generative AI

When it comes to the time differences at 11:18, the times are determined by the device time, which looking on each phone is different. Possibly a time zone selected wrong.
You mentioned that Google Assistant can't directly write emails for you, and listed "help me write" within Gmail as Google Assistant's alternative feature. But this feature within Gmail is actually powered by Gemini, and you only get access to this when you pay for Gemini Advanced.
Typical google to have more then one "app/assistant" that is doing kind of the same things. Just confusing for the user. Also all those names are not helping, first Bard, now gemini, and still google assistant stays around for now.

Gemini has been updated yesterday, now they added the misssing features, like reminders, also now it runs Python code in the same window a feature for developers

I think Gemini only triggers the Google assistant extension when you give voice commands and that too only from home screen and not when you type or give voice commands when Gemini app is opened
"Run the stopwatch" will start a stopwatch in the background (assistant). I think the start is recognised as starting the app.
You're not going crazy with the whole assistant features working before and not working now. I can vouch and agree that assistant has definitely somehow gotten dumber
Google needs to get better with their software... Too many open projects results in mediocre performance.

I think maybe when you were using Google assistant the original to ask the question to send a voice message maybe that when it was still using the original assistant it would still use the original function to send properly the voice message that you want it, but maybe that when you asked the same question on Gemini it may have already cancel that function and so you cannot anymore send the voice message so it just sent a normal message.

I just want to let you know that for some reason Gemini is much slower on your phone than on my phone. On my phone Gemini loads up just as fast as Google Assistant in almost every regard or circumstance. I'm uncertain why your Gemini is loading at a much slower pace. For example, when trying to load up locations or asking directions to the nearby pizza restaurants, Gemini loaded up everything in less than 5 seconds.
How to turn off Gemini?
In my opinion it's normal for Gemini to take more time to respond because Gemini might first figure out if the voice input is a command or a question for Gemini AI and then compute information based on the decision.
Hope that Gemini will be way better than it is right now and what OG assistant currently is 💯
One day Gemini activated itself and I was confused. I even check the Play store and it said I hadn't downloaded yet. I eventually switched back to Assistant since Gemini still lacks some features I use. If they make Gemini better or combine the two then it'll be a win but for now Google Assistant takes the slight edge.
I'll continue to use Google assistant and keep gemeni as a link to the web app for generating emails, photos, etc...
at 2:30 I don't think it gave a wrong answer as much as the symantics weren't clear, I am cuirious to see what happens if you phrased it like "devide the result by two" or "devide that by 2"
Does the Gemini app only work in the US? It keeps saying that it is not available without telling me the specific reason. It's strange to think this is US-only, because I can access it using a web browser.
I have used Gemini for a month now, I find it less advances ok the voice recognition and less convenient to use either for the smart assistant features or the AI tools
I have the advanced in my phone i recommend you compare that one too. Mine doesn't talk though.

i think with the one with an equation, google read them all as individual, so that when you did 30/2, it only did 30/2 and not the rest
Gemini is cool for generating images but outside of that, it's just not as fast and polished as Google Assistant so I switched back for now.

Yah, at times, I'd argue most times, we just need a simole and useful assistant. Not a complex AI
one google assistant feature I personally use all times is the feature to translate everything on my screen to the system language, hell if there's text on screen that's not in one of my languages, and I bring up assistant, it just shows me a quick shortcut button for the translate command. gemini seems to simply be incapable of comprehending that command, and even when it does understand the command it has a terrible execution.

Google needs to add an extension to Google assistant to only use Gemini when needed... Ion like that with the Gemini app downloaded (pixel 6 here) I still can't use Google assistant & Gemini at the same time.
the first time i used gemini, i asked it to set an alarm for the next morning, something i ALWAYS do with assistant, it said "got it, set" and then i checked 30 mins after my alarm, missing work, that it in fact did not set the alarm.
Gemini is fine. But I think Google needs to work more with it. For example, Gemini should not always use the default LLM while answering. With Assistant we don't do that type of thing. The best would be if they can combine some features from both Gemini and Google Assistant.
Reminders to work on Gemini AI btw. Make sure you turn on Workspace

Technically you can't use the gemini app for assistant functionality, you need to use the popup that appears on top of other apps.
Gemini is a let down, hopefully it will get better, but will it, really? And how long will that take?
Hope google integrates gemini into assistant; however, I think assistant days are numbered. Most of the points lost are just controlling the phone which they should be able to easily add once optimized. I mean, they do that now so they have all the codes for it so it may just take some time to build out some sort of HDK and migrate to new framework. If Google doesn't announce any new features to assistant this June/July and only talks about Gemini, RIP Google Assistant in 2 years.
