I worked at MSI in Europe. We got an ad in from HQ where a girl in bikini like clothes holding a mainboard would be pictured with the text "Buy me! And get a free me!". You would get a free graphics card. You have no idea how hard EU HQ fought to not have to use the campaign. Imagine all the ads that didn't make it when you see these!

Unironically that's how a lot of meetings are in china, I once went for work and once the "formal" meeting was done (which was like 15 minutes of pretty much nothing on an office) we were invited to this place with like 20 girls in bikinis, 2 per person sitting next to you or even on the laps of some of these chinese men, unlimited drinks and food (amazing food btw) and these super serious chinese men got drunk af and started actually discussing about the bussiness like that; seemed like they cared more about how you were socially than anything else. I've heard very similar stories from other friends that have done bussiness in china.

There's been enough to do an entire series. Maybe not ones quite as awful and tasteless as some of these but I've seen so many bad tech commercials over the years, especially from the Nintendo/Sega and IBM/Apple rivalries in the 90s. Though finding them archived somewhere might not be possible.

It feels like what it would be like to have lived a life that encompassed the invention of the printing press, the adoption of spoken language, and the discovery of fire. She's definitely best in off-the-cuff or loosely structured videos. I haven't personally cared for the few scripted videos she did, but the way she interacts with the team and Linus is always entertaining.

The story about Ellen Feiss (Apple Commercial) is that she hadn't planned to be in a commercial that day - her friend was on site for an audition. She was also dealing with severe allergies. So she was thrown in at the last minute. The "Do you really want a clone" commercial was produced for MDG, a computer (and general tech financing company). And yes, they are a giant, exploitive scam along the lines of payday loans but with more steps.

She was apparently 15 at the time and friends with the son of the ad's director (the son features in a separate ad). Because 2022 was the 20-year anniversary of the ad, there were also a bunch of retrospectives last year catching up with her that appeared in publications like WIRED and Cult of Mac.

The thing about a lot of pre-2000 things being shown here is that they were interstitial/infomercials, kiosk videos, or trade show/con videos. Some might be cut up for time but were mainly used to hook someone. That was just the way back then, Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst would die without all the cross industry ones made in the 80s/90s. The Jennifer Aniston/Matthew Perry Win95 commercial was like this. The "stoner" Mac girl was actually sort of viral back then. There was even an interview with her a few years after. I think she was related to someone at Apple or the company that made the commercial. The "Switch" series also produced the ridiculous Jeff Goldblum (don't get me wrong, love him) "musings" video that is often slowed down to make him look drunk. It was that era after Apple came back with Jobs, the G3 and iMac and the iPod was starting to take hold. The buzz on their systems had started to stale again with everyone who wanted a Mac having one. I don't think the commercial really earned them many converts. That wouldn't come until 5 years later when Windows Vista (along with Apple adopting Intel) helped push the largest migration to Mac ever.
I got a real kick out of Linus at 2:10, "... because this actor (Kevin Costner) has never touched a computer in his life". Not many people had touched a computer in 1983 .. including you Linus!

There's been enough to do an entire series. Maybe not ones quite as awful and tasteless as some of these but I've seen so many bad tech commercials over the years, especially from the Nintendo/Sega and IBM/Apple rivalries in the 90s. Though finding them archived somewhere might not be possible.
The Sony PSP white edition ad is still the most outrageously racist thing put out by a billion dollar company I've ever seen

It feels like what it would be like to have lived a life that encompassed the invention of the printing press, the adoption of spoken language, and the discovery of fire. Nevertheless, it was a totally great trip down memory lane. My compliments.

That said, I’m surprised you didn’t cover the infamous Wii U era of Nintendo advertising despite covering them with 3 of the bad ads. That shit was cursed.
She's definitely best in off-the-cuff or loosely structured videos. I haven't personally cared for the few scripted videos she did, but the way she interacts with the team and Linus is always entertaining.

I must admit, the way you guys do your sponsor segments is, well, the best on UA-cam.
Short and simple, straight to the point message that doesn't last more than 20s.
Most ad segments nowadays in UA-cam are like 2 to even 3 minutes long; that's insane! And most of the time, it makes me really not want anything to do with whatever is being advertised.

The story about Ellen Feiss (Apple Commercial) is that she hadn't planned to be in a commercial that day - her friend was on site for an audition. She was also dealing with severe allergies. So she was thrown in at the last minute.
The "Do you really want a clone" commercial was produced for MDG, a computer (and general tech financing company). And yes, they are a giant, exploitive scam along the lines of payday loans but with more steps.
I remember that commercial and the online infamy she had. Most people thinking she was stoned or high on something.

Because 2022 was the 20-year anniversary of the ad, there were also a bunch of retrospectives last year catching up with her that appeared in publications like WIRED and Cult of Mac.

The thing about a lot of pre-2000 things being shown here is that they were interstitial/infomercials, kiosk videos, or trade show/con videos. Some might be cut up for time but were mainly used to hook someone. That was just the way back then, Red Letter Media's Best of the Worst would die without all the cross industry ones made in the 80s/90s. The Jennifer Aniston/Matthew Perry Win95 commercial was like this.
The "stoner" Mac girl was actually sort of viral back then. There was even an interview with her a few years after. I think she was related to someone at Apple or the company that made the commercial. The "Switch" series also produced the ridiculous Jeff Goldblum (don't get me wrong, love him) "musings" video that is often slowed down to make him look drunk. It was that era after Apple came back with Jobs, the G3 and iMac and the iPod was starting to take hold. The buzz on their systems had started to stale again with everyone who wanted a Mac having one. I don't think the commercial really earned them many converts. That wouldn't come until 5 years later when Windows Vista (along with Apple adopting Intel) helped push the largest migration to Mac ever.
