Ronnie was a real gentleman. He took time to speak with me and hang out before one of his shows in New Britain, CT back in the '80's. No ego, just a regular guy....but we all know he was a lot more than that. Thank you for sharing Doug.

Can't tell you how many times I heard stories just like that. One such story involved a kid who got stranded at a concert venue & might not have been able to get inside either. So Ronnie's bus is getting ready to head out and long story short he brought the kid to the closest bus station in his tour bus (probably paid for his ticket too).

Do your demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know?
You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time
    We're a lie, you and I
    We're words without a rhyme

According to Wendy Dio, this song is about Ritchie Blackmore. Also, she said from heaven and hell, "The world is full of kings and queens. Who blind-your-eyes and steals your dreams it's heaven and hell." Also, about Ritchie Blackmore. Ritchie pissed him off badly.

I have been a RJD fan ever since I heard him on "Love is All" and the first Rainbow album. I have heard and seen Dio live twice, in 1984 at the Pinkpop festival and in 2000 at a show from the Magica tour. Just an awesome singer and performer, not to forget songwriter. Had the pleasure of meeting Ronnie in person, before the Magica show in 2000 and remember him as a polite and friendly person. Treasured memories.

    Ronnie's early career:
1958-1960: Ronnie and the Red Caps
1961-1967: Ronnie Dio and the Prophets
    1968-1971: Electric Elves
    1972-1974: Elf
There are recordings available on UA-cam as far back as 1958, though the earliest available vocal by Ronnie is from 1960 (the 1958 recording is an instrumental where he plays lead trumpet).

Certainly not the most complex song, but really powerful, as usual. His lyrics are always excellent, and, of course, his vocals are almost untouchable. There were actually a number of bands before Rainbow, including The Vegas Kings, Ronnie and the Rumblers, Ronnie and the Redcaps (e.g.: An Angel is Missing), Ronnie and the Prophets (e.g.: Walking in Different Circles) - which are all sort a mix of swing/crooner/early rock/whatever you want to call them, and then the The Electric Elves > Elf. You should really check out something by Elf, in which his style became much more Blues and heavier than previously, like “Wonderworld”.

I noticed how you thought the keyboard melody in the intro was "interesting". Well.... There's an "interesting" story to how it came about.
Ronnie's bassist Jimmy Bain (who played with Ronnie in Rainbow and had a reputation for being buzzed but completely functional at the same time) was in the studio with the band recording the song and they were toying with ideas for the intro. So they're trying this, trying that and Jimmy walks up to the keyboard with a Jack and coke in one hand, & a cigarette dangling from his lip & starts playing the simple melody you hear on the recording and Ronnie goes "that's it"!....and that's how it came about.
If you watch this interview with the members of Last in line (a band that features the former members of Ronnie's band with a different singer) you'll hear them recall the moment starting at the 4:15 mark.
    Enjoy 👊😎🎸

Was listening to We Rock before this. Rhythm section was tight. Vinnie Appice was locked in, with some great drum fills.
Rainbow in the Dark teaches how to write without being complicated. Another link to Iron Maiden was going beyond standard blues licks in the riff writing. By design or accident, you can hear the Aeolian mode (a) and Phrygian (e), which gives it a darker sound.

I have seen a rainbow in the dark. I was heading south out of Knoxville, Tn, just before sunrise. There was a drizzling rain falling, the mountains were to the east, and a slight glow of sunlight could be seen touching the mountain tops. I looked to the west and an incredibly bright rainbow was against the pitch black sky. I have never seen colors so vivid and bold. Other drivers were pulling to the side of the road and we all kind of sat there completely mind blown, untill the sun crested the mountains behind us and faded out the rainbow. This song always takes me back to that Tennessee roadside and the vision that i was blessed to see that morning.

Just like Iron Maiden uses to do...and that's one of the reasons for being so good! 😅 Whoever listened carefully to Maiden's songs know how good they are, no matter how many chords were used to compose them! And both Dio and Iron Maiden mean excellence in heavy metal, in rock! I've been Dio's fan for decades - for me, the greatest heavy metal singer ever, one of the greatest frontmen in rock'n roll history! And, yes, you're right, I've noticed you've reacted to Dio's songs only a few times; and that's why I'm gonna help you by suggesting some of his hits for you to react to: "Don't talk to strangers"; "Sacred heart"; "Like the beat of a heart"; "The last in line" (official music video); and the beautiful but underrated "All the fools sailed away" (official music video) - I don't know why people don't use to react to this one. Great songs that become even greater when they're sung by Dio. R.I.P., Ronnie!

It was 1 year ago that you reacted to Heaven and Hell and I am hoping you might consider reacting to a band that just did a cover of it. The band is Liliac pronounced "Lilly-Ack". It is 5 siblings ages 15-24. They have 3 original albums but started by doing cover songs 8 years ago. They occasionally add a new covers and their tribute to the song Heaven and Hell, as well as Dio is excellent in my opinion. Dio is Liliac's singer's idol and she is friends with Vinnie Appice. Dio's widow Wendy ask Liliac to perform a cancer fund tribute of The Last In Line. Vinnie gave them an un-released version to perform. I don't think you can go wrong by reacting to any of their music. Their cover of Heaven and hell is the newest video other than Carol of the Bells. I wasn't sure how to request a reaction so I posted here.

The genius of the composition of this song is that the whole song is only made up of two guitarriffs, the chorus is just adding the keyboards onto the verse riff. Although it is dirt simple it is a great catchy song and his biggest hit that probably made his career under his own name to a large extent.

Please do DIO - As Long As It's Not About Love.
A lesser known song from the Magica album, but that together with Rainbow In The Dark are my 2 favorite songs from him.
And he's my favorite vocalist of all time. By far.

Ronnie did some great stuff with Rainbow as well. Gates of Babylon, Stargazer, Kill the King, or Man on the Silver Mountain are a few you should check out.
And yeah I agree with the comments about how you missed a great guitar solo.

The metaphor is also much more simple:
He had been in Rainbow, & then in Black Sabbath… he had become a literal (member of) rainbow in the dark (of Sabbath), & then emerged on his own

The bright color of the synth emerges from the heavy metal sound just like a rainbow in the dark--where, likewise, you just never find one.

You should come back to Megadeth, since they're one of the seminal bands where you still haven't really seen all they have to offer. I would recommend "Hangar 18" or "Tornado of Souls"
