In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to an epic cover of the classic song Dream On by Aerosmith. This version, led by Ronnie James Dio and Yngwie Malmsteen, was released on the 1999 Aerosmith tribute album called Not the Same Old Song and Dance. I really like this cover version! (I used the spotify version of this song.)

Think about this - Ronnie was 57 when he recorded this. His voice still sounding great.
And its higher than steven, on verses
He was the thing.
Dio had been to the "crossroads". There is no other explanation.
Lots of people in the comments saying Malmsteen should have held back.
...this IS Malmsteen holding back 😂
And tbf I like his lead parts in this song. He's put his stamp on it. It would be weird if he was on the track and he'd played it straight, we'd all be going "IS that Malmsteen?! It doesn't sound like him...", whereas this way, there's no doubt lol. It's probably easier for me to appreciate his playing on this as I don't know the original well, my ears aren't used to hearing/expecting certain lead parts.
This is the best comment for this particular video.
Dio made him actually have to play the song instead of just throwing totally down, He Used The Special Majyk With Him 😊
yes he is indeed. its the only time he plays so little
A huge fan of Steven Tyler and co. but I m in love with Dio's cover. Malmsteen playing is on fire
i think its something to to with Dio's phrasing.. its just so rock n roll .. ye i agree a great cover version.. better that the orig..
Technically it’s malmsteens cover
One of my favourite songs by Yngwie. He does his thing, but really embraces the song, rather than just soloing over everything.
Dio was amazing, as always
Dio and Malmsteen just perfected a song that was already great. RIP Dio! You´ll always be missed!!
Still waiting for Dio „All the fools sailed away“ (Studio recording, not the video!) and Vai & Devin Townsend (Still my bleeding heart or In my dreams with you).
I'm gonna go listen to that right now. "You're so cold and critical and baby now that's too bad, but my reality will have to come to me in my dreams."
@@jeffreycollins7297 that song was written for Vai by the same guy who wrote Living on a prayer for Bon jovi I think?
hell no, do some less overplayed stuff like something from Dream Evil or Strange Highways.
@@Terminxman „All the fools sailed away“ is actually from the „Dream Evil“ album.
@@agustinalessio That's producer Desmond Child...he co-wrote it with Vai, just as he did with Bon Jovi's mentioned song
Dio influenced way more singers through the 70's & 80's than most others.. he was the benchmark.. he was rock/metal vocals on steroids.. a true master & a legend.. RIP Ronnie J Dio
Sorry but IMO Dio was vastly overrated as an 'influence'. A decent singer, sure but no more.
@@SVSupervox may be? but in the 70s & 80's who were better/more influential singers in the heaven rock/metal scene? Black Sabbath & Rainbow & a few other bands would probably disagree with u.. anyway its purely subjective, each to their own flavor..
@@kochstevens3210 Ian Gillan would be the first and most obvious name - although it would be interesting to discover how many of those he inspired actually reached the heights (pun totally intended!!) he did? I know I didn't (in either meaning of the word).
Although I actually don't particularly like him, the other name that comes to mind instantly is Ozzy. Proof that you don't have to be vocally brilliant to front a mega-successful band and influence future generations.
I'll throw one other name out there - Robert Plant. Although tbf I think it's actually LZ as a band that inspired people rather than the individual members despite all being technically brilliant virtuosos.
You are of course correct that the subject is purely subjective; Bruce Dickinson - one of my own favourite front men - lists Dio as one of his influences. IIRC he was quoted as saying something along the lines of 'he really sings and in a very different way to other guys'.
As you say - each to their own 🙂
@@SVSupervox ye.. i agree Gillan could get up high, but Dickinson didn't arrive till early 80's.. both were groundbreaking true, but i think Dio had a certain phrasing that was his trade mark & distinctive. a style if u will. They were all unique. David Coverdale was another great "feel" singer.. i also loved Dave Lee Roth & his crazy antics & acrobatics as a front man.. he was the man.. so many flavors to choose from..
As a swede I've followed Malmsteen's career since '85, and it's been going downhill for the last decade or so. He's still got the chops, but he needs a manager (who's not his wife), a good band, a good producer, and he needs someone to tell him when to hold back and when to blast away. That will never happen.
This however, is one of my favorite Malmsteen moments ever, probably because he's restricted by the song. And Ronnie's vocals are awesome, as always. ;)
I couldn't agree more, sir! \m/
I totally agree too! Yngwie also needs an actual singer on the level of Soto and Turner. Odyssey was easily his greatest album. His wife reminds me of Sharon Osborne!
He's unfortunately needed this since about 1990, Lol. But for good or ill, he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who listens much to what anyone else says
True
Malmsteen has been on the up again lately I've found. His playing is solid and not sloppy at all, as there was a period in the late 2000's through the 2010's where the sound was muddy as hell and he just looked out of it and tired all the time.
Recently, he's been on fire. No more muddiness, he looks energetic and delivers a good show.
His albums have been on the okay spectrum for a while now, usually featuring one or two tracks that are really good and the rest sounding like any Malmsteen track you've ever heard. But then, that's been the case since Unleash The Fury.
Ronnie James Dio .. need we say more ? Then add Yngwie Freakin Malmsteen to the mix and you have the recipe for sheer awesomeness
So glad someone finally did this version, IMO I think Dio just made it his own. To me it just has more feeling. I love the original but this is my favorite version. So glad you discovered this and checked it out.
As soon you hear the first note you know it’s Dio what a voice he had RIP DIo 🙏
Hey Doug - as of this morning I'm all caught up ! I discovered you a couple months back and since worked my way through every single one of your reaction videos. Love the channel and that you keep it real. You've also introduced me to new bands (Nightwish, Opeth). Health and happiness to you brother
Thanks Jon! I'm glad you're here.
I honestly think this is some of Yngwie's most tasteful and emotional soloing here. He may not be the player he once used to be...but in his day no one could come close.
Doug, I would love to see you take on SAVATAGE; go for their song "St. Patrick's", or maybe "When the Crowds are Gone". Late 80's heavy metal with symphonic touches, incredible lyricism and a healthy dose of PIANO.
cheers!
They have excellent 90s albums too. The song Chance for example would be an excellent song for a reaction.
@@Hy-jg8ow A full album reaction to The Wake of Magellan would have me joining the Patreon without thinking
@@MartiCongost Absolutely!
Savatage is tailor made for this reaction channel. Pretty much any song from their catalog from Hall of the Mountain King through all the Trans-siberian Orchestra stuff. Hopefully one day we will get one. If we do, I just hope it's not Christmas/Sarajevo 12/24 not that it's a bad song but it's the obvious choice due to it's popularity.
@@MartiCongost If any reaction channel ever chose to react to an entire Savatage album, my hope would be that they would choose 'Streets'. That album is a master piece and it's got everything that is cool about that band. I like Wake, every song is great but I don't think it holds up as a 'concept album'. Even Jon Oliva has stated in an interview, "The only person who knows what that album is about and can follow it is Paul O'Neil". RIP Paul.
Thank you Doug, yet another great new song to listen to. I loved the way you showed us the close up of you actually playing it. I can work on playing that myself now (clunkilly of course, but a bit of practice...). If you can it would be great if you would do more of that kind of demonstration.
Great version of a classic song. Really enjoy your reactions, Doug.
Thanks, both for the choice of song and the neat piano section. ”Yngwie walks…” - classic! These hard rock and metal videos are so good.
I love your commentary through songs, telling us how the song is constructed and what is actually happening. As a very poor guitar player who just plays for fun you have inspired me to learn more music theory.
Love your reaction vids, thank you.
Wow; I really enjoyed that. I didn't know Dio and Malmsteen had done this cover, and I really appreciated your going over the chords on the keyboards. It's fascinating that something that sounds so simple can be in actuality constructed of such complex chords.
I was also super-excited to see that you'll be doing some Neal Morse (Spock's Beard) on Friday; really looking forward to that! I've been asking for a different Morse track called Stranger in Your Soul for a while; I think it also would make a great Friday episode. I love what you're doing; I'm addicted to your channel. Keep it up, and I wish you all success.
Fantastic to see you enjoy yourself so much... Your love for this song shines throughout the video... keep it going ... Great music great breakdowns great insight and GREAT Channel 👍
Your enthusiasm is fantastic. Really great to see.
What a cover this was OMG …. Rip RJD you fucking legend
Loving the view of the Piano, please do more of this Doug, from a piano newbie, it's great to see what's happening
Love this cover. Been on my Spotify playlist for years
I love the added piano close-up. Please add more of these for future videos (especially Iron Maiden!!!)
It's so cool that you don't go down the road of the comparisons. That shows highly respect for all those incredible artists. That's class, man! Très chic!
Cool little masterclass! Thanks!
I never knew this cover existed ! Thank you for this ❤
Didn’t know this existed. Thanks for sharing. Enjoying the videos.
Killer cover. Both Ronnie James and Yngwie bring their own flavor and pull it off very well. They make a good team. Cool bootleg of them doing man on the silver mountain together.
Recently discovered your channel. Great content, and you have great ears. Appreciate your insight. Thank you.
OMG I can't believe you covered this!!! He did a Christmas song, too!! He TORE it up, just like he did this!!
Love the added keyboard breakdown, going to practice playing that and I hope that the keyboard makes many appearances
Wow! Just listened to this Doug! Have followed Yngwie for a long time (My favorite: "Black Star") and with the addition of Ronnie James Dio, this really rocks! "Dream On" has always been my favorite Aerosmith song. Thanks Doug, and Hi to Megan 👍✌
Another outstanding reaction video Mr Helvering. The song is an all time classice. The cover version is my favourite cover of them all. Originals are nearly always best, nearly. Dio and Malmsteen really shine on here but its the Music Theory that impresses me most. How you can pick key's, chord progressions and the like is very very impressive and educational also.
love your videos and cannot wait for the next one. Thank you again
I suddenly saw this on my Spotify and it's awesome to see it get the recognition it deserves.
That was cool!
What a really cool pairing and just a fun cover.
"Last Action Hero" was one of my first CD's. I had 10 for about six months and that was one of them. Also did not know of this version and have a ton of Yngwie and Dio. So excited.
So much fun to watch you react when your moved by the music.
Speaking about Malmsteen, Doug, I strongly recommend his amazing rendition of Mr Crowley with Tim Ripper Owens on vocals.
You might want to check out the song "To Live for The King (feat. Ronnie James Dio)" from the album "Seeds of Change" by Kerry Livgren (a main songwriter on the first few albums by Kansas). Interesting combo.
Great song .... many don't know this and the " Mask of the Great Deceiver". Nice choice.
Doug since you brought up the progression in Whole my guitar gently weeps. Yngwie did a cover of that song in 2019. He actually sings the vocals also. One of his best vocal efforts for sure. Plus you can hear Yngwie playing very bluesy in his own way. It is a great cover. He also had an album called Inspiration which he did covers of his most influential songs for him when he was young. Some great covers there also. Really enjoy your channel - break down of songs and your reactions.
I had no idea Dio covered this! Malmsteen is Malmsteen - one gets exactly what one expects, lots of noodling, generally too much noodling, but always played with insane intonation and clarity. The only time I saw Malmsteen live was when his band opened for Dio in 1990 or 91 - boring as hell, but technically brilliant. Dio, of course, was awesome, as he was every time I saw before then... but anyway... great cover!
So good to hear Dio's voice again. For my money, he's THE voice of heavy rock and roll/metal. A god of delivery and artistry. Lots of other great singers, of course, but Dio gives me goosebumps.
And Dio and Malmsteen together on this - just wonderful! I have to say, Malmsteen offers some guitar work here that works. I wasn't sure I'd appreciate his role in this cover, but I do. And while listening, I could hear Joe Perry saying, "Dude, I don't play that many notes in a whole concert. Impressive!"
Well said. Dio is/was/will always be the greatest voice in metal. 🤘❤️🤘
Yngwie gets paid by the note.
@@josephbarr1659 Bruce Dickinson in my eyes/ears
Both great though
Thanks for the vid, Doug! Recommending: Diary of a madman by Ozzy Osbourne (ft Randy Rhoads)! Cheers!
A perfect circle did a mashup of love song and diary of a madman called Diary of a love song. You should check it out if you can find it
YESSS
It took me a month and a half to learn the intro to this, I taught my daughter how to play it in 45 minutes
Doug did do Diary recently, if you didn’t catch it!
I did! Thanks, man!
Alice Cooper said 'When Dio covers a song it becomes his'
SKY OVERTURE by Uli Jon Roth!!!!!!
I have that album but haven't listened to it in forever. I forget what's even on there. Time to revisit it.
I really liked Dio's singing, he gave the song his own tone without differing too much from the original. Also i thought the drums were great on this version, giving it lots of energy. I couldn't however find a liking in many of the overlaying guitar parts. While played in a masterful way, i think they didn't really fit the overall mood of the song - but maybe that's just my personal preference.
At least he didn‘t play into Dio‘s singing. But for Yngwie every „free space“ is Yngwie-Shredding-Space - always. And he didn‘t mature in that respect, because his die-hard fans love him for that.
Less is more.
Yngwie “no, more is more”
I mean, it's just an opinion
In my opinion I think it was really good... I don't like when he overplays too but here it's cool
@@Macloud2 I count myself as a diehard fan, but of the pre-accident Yngwie. He actually used to leave space and had pacing and interesting phrasing prior to running his Jaguar into a tree in the late-80s.
My suspicion has been that something in his brain changed and that he may possibly be suffering from CTE, because, to me, he is a very different player than when he first emerged on the scene. His playing used to have twists and turns and now is largely just streams of notes with little regard for the progression or rhythmic motif in the background.
There are things that he has done since that I like, but most of it is things that he actually composed as a teenager in Sweden that didn't make it onto a major album release until later in his career.
I wish he would do more work with symphonies. Something about that format seems to make him more focused and disciplined, and if anything possibly affords him the opportunity to add to grow and to add to his legend since he has pretty much done the neoclassical rock shredding to death.
I did not know of this cover, thanks.
Dio the best metal voice ever, Malmsteen the best guitar ever.. Result.. The best cover ever.. That simple
Love this recording
The best collaboration ever!
Doug, As a classical composer you owe it to yourself and to your listeners to listen to a classical album by the band Camel "The Snow Goose" from 1975 and re-recorded in 2013 no vocals and it's one long song!
Mother of God.... Never heard this version before. Thanks for doing this one.
I love this version of the song
Never heard this before. Very enjoyable...
This will be a treat for me, love Dio and 70's Aerosmith, never heard Dio's version of this song.
Love this version of the song!
"Dio just rocks!" - Right on! Such spirited analysis!
That's a vocal/guitar combo I never thought of....but maaan did we need it
Ronnie was an unbelievable talent as a rock singer
King Diamonds, sleepless nights from the album Conspiracy. There is a really nice live version on youtube
Best cover ever...
P.S. please do voice of the soul - death
hell yeah
Hi Doug, I think you’d enjoy some of the Bruce Dickinson solo work. A little different to the Maiden vibe. There’s an excellent video of him and Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull fame) performing Jerusalem in Canterbury Cathedral! Something a bit different! Thanks for everything you’re doing on the channel, I love tuning in and finding news earworms!
Yes! That's a great pick!
My, that was quite a fun ride.
More Jason Becker! How about the title track from his debut?
Just found this great orchestral arrangement / cover of Jason‘s Air today… ua-cam.com/video/Vt4YHlSbuk0/v-deo.html
love this version best
Ronnie's voice sounds absolutely amazing on this.
The MTV 10th anniversary live performance was a full orchestra is one of the most amazing pieces of rock/orchestra performances in all of history. And I got to see Emerson Lake and Palmer live with orchestra on the last performance of the Works tour. But that MTV 10th with Arrowsmith is still the greatest live rock/orchestra in history.
I liked your piano take on the chords ! Nice playing btw ! U should do that more, it's interesting :)
Both Ronnie & Yng ruled in that cover. In many ways I now prefer this compared to the original...
Sounds so good! R.I.P. Ronnie! \m/
Thank you for bring this great cover versions to my attention. I had never heard of it. Dio... Great presence as always.
Yngve... He was more like a butterfly that fluttered by...
Ps. You should look into live version of the song Hocus Pocus by the Dutch rock band Focus.
That's something you don't hear everyday.
Tanks again for your channel. 😊
Goosebumps from start to finish... 💖
I just watched this while the internet is filled with the news of Dusty Hill's passing and with all the tributes to him, and with all else that is going on in this world right now, the segment at 06:42 seems to have greater relevance than ever before. RIP Dusty. Thank you Doug...
A band called Sons of Apollo did a really good cover of this song too. They do a really good job covering Comfortably Numb also
this is the BEST version of this song ever
I'd love to see Doug team up with one of the vocal reactors (Charlie Collatta [BigBrainSinger] or Elizabeth Zharoff [Charismatic Voice] come to mind) for some of these works where there's just as much to analyze and comment on between both the vocal and instrumental performances.
I really hope that happens...
On the flip side, Id LOVE to see him collab with David Bruce, Adam Neely, Nahre Sol, Ben Levin & Tantacrul or another awesome lineup composing over a theme)
Hi Doug, you mentioned that you'd like to react to full albums on your Patreon. Well, as you'd like to do more Dio, you won't go far wrong with his album 'Magica'. It's pretty epic!
Other great Dio tracks you could consider include 'Holy Diver', 'Don't Talk To Strangers' and 'The Last In Line'.
Best cover from yngwie malmsteen : 1 dream on aerosmith 2. Gimmie gimmie Abba 3. The sail of charon scorpions 4. Child in time deep purple and more from album inspirations...
This is the only version of this song that I know... and I love it!
awesome
For so many years I loved this version of this song!!! So glad that you check IT out.
I personally prefer Dio in this ... IMO is a far better singer than Tyler.
And Malmsteen.. well .. amazing performance
i love your Yngwie videos so much. Overture 1622 is a take one of Mozarts Symphony. Overture 1383 is Greensleeves
Dio never forgotten best singer ever Yngwie living legend perfection from both
I’m playing catch-up, and enjoyed your reaction. Showing the chord progressions on piano was interesting. I read that Steven Tyler got his inspiration for this song from sitting under the piano, listening to his father play classical music. This was from a 2006 album, A Tribute To Aerosmith: Not The Same Old Song And Dance. If Aerosmith is your thing, you might enjoy the other tribute songs, as well. 😎
In terms of delivery, I PREFER Dio's to Tyler's. His diction is better, he's more dramatic with his pitch control and embellishing note choices and vibrato, there's just so much to love about this performance for him. And he SMARTLY just skipped over the part where Steve goes into the whistle-register scream, because he knows he doesn't have that gear.
At the bare minimum, he paid a proper homage to the original while still making it distinctively his own.
I... won't talk about Yngwie's performance.
Malmsteen rocks!
Well said.
Prefer Dio singing this. Ronnie doesn't do the screaming that Tyler does on the original but Steven hasn't got the control and range in his chest voice that Ronnie did, and this wasn't even Dio in his prime! Hated Malmsteen's input, waaay too many notes as per usual.
Why not? Yngwie did so good in this cover. I loved the style he gave to this piece.
@@ronnienose8608 Nailed it. Every aspect. Including Yngwie playing way too many inappropriate notes and walking all over delicate parts.
I never knew this existed. Sweet!
It's been 11 years since Ronnie James Dio passed away. 😥
Love it ,
yngwie's closest album to a rock album was the one he did with joe lynn turner odyssey to bad they didn't stay together longer. i got to see them live and it worked

Thank you! I've never listened to this version....and now I'm addicted. Great!
I agree the Aerosmith MTV anniversary version is awesome. It always gives me goose bumps and Dios version of this is definitely not a disappointment.
Great review! I think Malmsteen was insanely great here, but I’m a fan!
