E39s are super reliable
@@Codeman785 they definitely aren't. I had one and it spent most of its time sitting in the garage waiting for parts when things broke. I thought that but this guy owns seven cars. I doubt he'll put that many miles on it.
Joe Swanson Matt owns a bunch too. He just had other people drive it. It helped he bought it with most of the miles on it too.
409k is a ton of miles but it’s a long way off from a million, it would be a while. And it already had a new engine in it.

Love the video and ur channel. I’ve never been a tech or master tech at that, but have been a weekend tech on my personal cars and only buy used ones. The past few years, I have only bought high mileage cars. My wife and other close family think I’m nuts and refer to them as “Dave specials” !! Anyhow, most of my high mileage cars have had have been reliable, and the previous owners have serviced them religiously or are cars that are bullet proof. I’ve bought a few older 20 year and 15 year old Camry’s, ‘03 Tahoe (my favorite), ‘97 Bmw 528i with 250k on it, (the worst bmw I’ve ever owned cause it was never serviced by Previous owner). The one that I miss the most was one that you made me a Mercedes believer with. I had to sell it last year after owning it for 6 months. It was a mint to me ‘92 Benz 300e coupe w124 platform. It only had two owners and 170k miles. Everything worked and it just needed struts and quarters recleared. It was a beautiful, solid car. I’ll eventually look for another in the future. Keep on wrenching !!
Congrats on the new car Alex! Thanks for coming by to share the stories. Of course we know the E39 is not as fast across the country as a CL55 but it is still a great car!
Ed Bolian I sense you are proposing a challenge? Cross country trip CL55 VS M5? I’d be all for that.
How about a fox body mustang?? Lol
Next cross country trip I'll be there with the M5 and a trunk full of tools. You know, to help fix the CL when the ABC suspension decides to stop working. Oh and some 10w60 oil for me, Haha.
Please make this happen
Please let this happen
The guy who owned the m5 had great taste not just the car but the mods he did
Also the Paint
The rims are all wrong on the e39.
What mods? I keep looking at the video but its completely stock, just wheels and a sticker on the sidewindow. Its all original E39 M5 parts. Okay maybe the exhaust (not sure anymore, sold mine a couple of years ago)
Mark
To some those I are considered “mods” I guess. Same goes for the tinted windows..even though a nice pair of staggered wheels with a nice and fat lip in the rear looks best on the e39, these wheels just look off for some reason.
Noobmaster69 i agree with you, subtle mods are the best. I was referring to sneaky 86. I think he sees the bumpers and exhaust and such and thinks they are aftermarket mods. The wheels look horrible on this car, maybe im to much of a purist but the stock wheels look the best on an e39 m5. Maybe a muffler delete with original tips, because then the sound really comes to life!

If it looks that good with that many miles you know it was cared for always. In 2011 I fully committed to an ‘00 Neon (my reliable daily beater), whatever it needs it gets without question, initially I was upside down, but by now it’s averaged out to being by far the cheapest car I’ve ever owned and has also never failed me even once in 8 years.

Actually, I think I ///M now.

I found and bought the E39 M5 in this video. It’s currently at 431,000 miles and is my wife’s daily driver. I knew the car when it was purchased new at Grayson BMW in Knoxville Tennessee, and I knew the original owner and saw the car on a regular basis when I’d go to the Sunspot, one of the restaurants the original owner owned. This E39 M5 was a bit of a dream car for me back then, but now my wife and I both drive Carbon black e39 M5’s. I tracked this car down in Las Vegas, messaged the owner at the time, and we made a deal on it. I own and operate a small automotive repair shop in East Tennessee, so when the car arrived from shipping I took it to the shop and made a bunch of needed repairs. Currently it has no cel’s and runs and drives flawlessly. My wife drives this car every day and we plan on shooting for a million miles. EAG ( European Auto Garage) of Knoxville Tennessee did a ton of good work on this car and really deserve a lot of the credit for keeping this car alive when it could’ve gone to the junk yard. Randy Burleson, European Auto Garage, Alex Arias, Mikhail Epelev, Legit Street Cars, Alex Kermani, along with myself, are the reason this car has gotten all the love it takes to keep it alive and well. The story of this car is still being written.
Nice. What's the mileage now?
Can confirm, as one of few lucky enough to drive the half-million mile m5. Still going, still beautiful. It's awesome to sit here and listen to the beginnings of an amazing vehicle that I am fortunate to spend alot of time around. 👍
I recently got a 5 series sedan with the 6 speed, I was looking at a m5 on Monday on craigslist matching the one on your video. Hope to see more about it.
OEM friction plate lasted 225k on mine, spent my 4th (today) pulling it and spending my time after work tomarrow putting it back together. Did note exhaust is two separate 2.25in lines that restrict into a 2in and then step up into a 3 in system right before it exits, I'm thinking a short throw shifter and new linkage as well as after cat cutouts to reduce back pressure down the road.
We own the 400k mile E55 AMG that Alex mentioned in the video! There’s just something about a performance car with high miles! Just like Alex said, if only the cars could talk and tell their story...
Outstanding! >400k is nuts!! I just flew to Dallas on Thursday to pick up my “dream” 06 alpine white ZCP M3. Will be at C&O this Sunday!
Hell yea man. I totally agree. Crazy mileage stuff is super cool. On the topic of Wheel Bearings, recently picked up a 15 Maxima for the wife with 215xxxmi, and it still had all original wheel bearings on it. Im in CT and original owner worked in NYC. Drove down 6 days a week. Plus a bunch of cross country trips. Car has 222xxx now, and just replaced the fronts..... I couldnt believe how good they still looked. One was just starting to hum, but neither had any discoloration, all the faces and races were fine. It probably could've went another 20k. I was really impressed that the original front shocks still werent blown out. NYC everyday for 4 years! Its soo cool to have vehicles with a story....My work 95 7.3 Powerstroke, 5spd. dually, 4x4 has over 330xxx mi! All original engine, but did crack the bell housing and case plowing a few years ago.
I'm watching this from my work at BMW, in my low mileage e39 216k.
In 2005 I sold my S2M5 in Naperville for 55K. The dealership was horrible and his shop didn't exist yet. I still miss the car.
Make it the 1 million mile M5!!! That would be one hell of a story

I bought an e39 M5 for 3500$ with a noisy vanos 10 years ago CHEAP
It's a 400k mile car, who cares if it has been painted?
I have a 70k mile e34 and it was repainted a while ago. Mileage and paint quality really have no correlation because if you really care for your car you can have 400k paint that looks brand new
@@benr4677 Well, rockchips etc. definetely multiply with mileage.. But I see your point. What I was getting at is: if you buy a car as a collection item, I understand that never being repainted is a bonus. A 400k car, you don't buy for your collection, you buy it to use it.
Whenever I think of an E39 M5 I think of top gear and Jeremy clarkson calling it “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”

original parts are the water pump, starter, Alternator and engine got a rebuild transmission at 260 000 the interial is like brand new what surprises me the most and so is the paint beside stone chips on the hood
8k 😮 ummmmm idk how I feel about that price
Yeaaa I feel like that's still pretty steep for 409k miles, not original motor, not original paint but hey it's in investment since hes making money off it through yt videos so not too bad
@@ZHGAmingAllTheWay I guess for most people i know. Having a high mile good body with a replaced power train or at least motor alone is a go to for cheap semi reliable vehicles. all the people saying it is unreliable... it has still ran 400+k miles
Any car will last, as long as you spend.
Adam Manning Yes indeed but the amount you spend is also relevant
@@oliverlarsen6768 sometimes the amount you spend is irrelevant. Not everyone is lucky enough to have had "that car". I have mine, and that is all that matters.
Granted, mine only has 240k, but the only major work done has been a transmission rebuild. But not many transmissions will last 235k towing illegally heavy loads up and down mountains in Colorado. Couple of wheel bearings, lots of tires and brakes, but no internals or even things like alternator, water pump, or AC. The thing is a flipping beast.
I would have gone for a 2001-2003 model. The first year of the facelift model isn't usually as reliable because there are design and manufacturing kinks to work out. Unless your car was made towards the end of the model year run. The reliability should be a little better.
I love my '98 e39 540i/6. I got it as an abandoned car from a lot that went under, so... free, essentially. Put about $3k into getting it running/licensed/registered (someone had managed to strip parts off it while it sat for 3 years) and replaced a few cosmetic parts that were broken and new Pilot Super Sports. Since registration/smog is coming due again, I decided this time to have the timing chains and guides replaced to address part of an oil leak (she has 180k miles) as well as some door lock issues which is about another $3k. So, ~$6k in total for a well sorted car that I am absolutely in love with seems like a bargain to me. Part of those costs were upgrades such as front/rear BlackVue dash cams and Dynavin N7 head unit.
The timing chain guides were in decent shape and was told they looked original. The clips were broken and the chain was stretched, but all-in-all they were still good for a few more miles. I wanted to get them changed for the peace of mind.
My e39 was traded in by the original owner at Livermore Audi then sold at auction. Some local dealer picked it up but couldn't get it to start because of a fault. The shop they took it to couldn't figure it out, so the car sat. In that time the used lot went out of business and the car just sat. One day, my brother goes to a BMW mechanic seminar or something and the guy that had the car asks if my brother wanted it. My brother has a '03 e39 540i MSport Auto. My brother said sure then asked if I wanted it. All I had to do was the lien sale paperwork. So, technically I am the third owner since the out-of-business car dealer never registered it and the last reported owner was Livermore Audi who sold it at auction.

High mileage means that every time the car was turned on, it run a lot of miles. Therefore most of the miles were with the engine hot. Cold engine running is what puts more wear on it. High mileage a lot of times is better than low mileage.

I will say...The e39 is the BEST car i've ever driven. Best friend got a bargain on one at $2200 for one with 189k. Drove it through that winter and the power steering went out. My friend only trusted himself and me to drive it at that stage, not even his parents. We were working with high school budgets thought so we made the most of it. What a smooth car though. First time being in a car breaking 135mph was an e39, and if felt like it belonged there.
