Kennan reminds me why we’ve had at least a dozen BMWs in the family, and why they were all leased. I do agree that this is the best looking M5 built. If money were no object, I might consider one.
You BMW enthusiasts are a different breed, and I mean that as a compliment. I can't imagine dropping that much $ to keep my R129 SL on the road (yes, I understand an M car from the 00s is more special than an R129), whenever I see someone on the road with a BMW M car I salute them, I suppose they're worth it and maintaining them is kind of a badge of honor.
Sounds like the story with my 560SEL. However, I've done all the work on it myself. Was still pricey, but like his car, mine is in like-new condition mechanically. Working on cosmetic restoration as we speak!
Nice video! It's not that much money when you consider that it used to be the fastest limousine in the world. Especially as it really had a lot of kilometers and is in good condition. Leasing a 320d costs just €1000 per month - that puts it into perspective. As a child, my first NfS made the M5 my absolute favorite car. Keep it alive!
Thanks Kennan for making this video and providing lots of insight into your ownership of it. I’ve been interested in an E39 M5 for quite some time now and I’m glad to see you enjoy yours
Hold on to it, sooner or later BMWs will be going up in value. We have had ours 2013 328i E92 straight 6 N51 of smog, but with the 3 stage manifold the results are just😢 vantastic. It's a great car. Say what they may say. Good luck and happy touring.
DAMN! Kennan! That book is bigger than the one I got when I bought my Vette. I thought the previous owner maintained the car before me but you've taken the crown sir. 😊
Gotta level with ya my friend, a lot of these are very self inflicted (chasing oil gremlins, rebuilding driveline, rebuilding suspensions, having a crash). I think the headline here is timing chain guides.
FINALLY some E39 M5 content, bless 🙏🏻. I miss my E39 so much, it completely saved my life when some asshole passed me on the shoulder and crashed into me. Absolute TANK of a car that felt massless on a backroad.
Beautiful car and I applaud you for your appreciation for this car. BMW fan here and I love this era of 5 series. Congratulations for your loyalty to a special auto. Honestly, I think if folks kept track of the money they spend on a car they own after warranty is gone, it would blow their minds how much they’ve spent to keep it running and looking good. Maybe not M car expense but damn close. Over the last 30 years, nothings cheap anymore.
I bought my Ford Fusion about 2 weeks before you bought your M5 (end of October, 2015), and like you, I still have the car. Difference is in that time I've put 170k on the car (currently at 238k)- and its showing its age; I might get rid of it soon, after summer. Your M5 still looks amazing! I commend you for putting so much into it - I know I couldn't stomach it.
Love it! I also own a TiAg E39 M5 which just passed 217k miles. I agree Keenan, it’s the best sedan ever made. I’ll never sell it. Cheers to you for loving and caring for the ultimate driving machine. Keep the content coming 🙌
Hey from Germany and I thought I am that kind of crazy with my cars. Ok, I BET Kennan has also all the fuel receipes and where you took your car, parking tickets and such? I have a binder about that too, but my binder is not that crazy thick like yours (but I did not drive a single German car... to regular to see on the streets here^^). But don't worry, here in Germany the E39 M5 and every other BMW is also crazy expensive.. it must be true love with yours. And for everyone hating: Don't forget that this BMW has over 370 000 km (220 000 miles) on it and is in immaculate condition. Great video!!
Own an E92 M3 that needs a couple odds and ends but drives perfectly. This video is exactly why older BMWs get their reputation - it's not necessarily that they catastrophically fail, but it's because the "while you're in there" list never ends, and parts and labor for these non-glamorous items can very quickly become astronomical. Well done though Kennan. You've done more than I could possibly imagine doing to my E92 M3.
I just sold my f10 m5 and I already miss it. I cared for it like my own children and I hope the next owner does so as well. I'm looking forward to my next fun secondary car -- but I don't think anything will surpass the joy of my m5. It was my dream car, but now I have the memory and not the worry.
I’m 20 years old and about 6 months ago bought an e39 M5 in silverstone metallic with 90k miles and it is an amazing car. I’ve owned bmws before but this is the best car I’ve ever owned.
We have owned a 2001 E39 M5 here in Canada since 2007. It’s a Summer car with only 90,000kms on it, and it’s barely ever been Winter driven. I don’t ever remember that car having any major issues, most of the $$ put into it have been spent on transforming the car into the Eurospec. It is a fact that Canada cars tend to be more reliable than their US counterparts, largely due to the higher quality fuel.
Never stop talking about this car Kennan. My dad had one for 10 years in the exact spec before we he liquidated , just rhd for the South African market, every mention is like a trip down memory lane because he never shut up about it, until it was gone. He doesn't even acknowledge me talking about it now. Never stop talking about this car.
Kennan, just to give you some perspective on the cost of ownership I have had with my 2011 Acura RDX, 4 cyl, 2,5 ltr with turbo. I'm the original owner. It currently has 185,000 miles. Here is my maintenance log: full synthetic oil change every 5000 miles, tires, brakes and battery have been replaced about 3 times each. Only one actual repair/breakdown; last year power steering repair. That's it, sorry to bore you; let me put an Excel spreadsheet together for the next owner.
That’s exactly the approach I am talking with my old 2005 VW Golf. Please bear in mind that I live in Poland and service prices are much lower here (not necessarily parts). Anyway I bought my car for around 4000$ and in the last 17 months I own it spent somewhere around 2000$ for regular service and repair. On top of that another 2000$ to repair some minor collision damage but that came from insurance of nice lady that decided to turn right straight after she heard a command from her sat nav. By the way your BMW service is at the level of service done to metro buses in the company I work for (with that exemption that bus service is rather reactive than proactive). So when somebody buys used bus from us they literally bring them pallet on the forklift with service records.
I have had to settle for a 540 E39 6MT because I just cannot afford anything "M", even my E60 and F10's are 535i M-Sport versions.. They are both FBO, but still not M5 experience levels.

Gotta like Kennan. A true car nerd, and his presentation abilities have improved so much over the last year.
I commend you for putting so much into it - I know I couldn't stomach it.
this video helped me realize the key to owning an aging german sports car, just focus on one car. such a great video
Love it! I also own a TiAg E39 M5 which just passed 217k miles. I agree Keenan, it’s the best sedan ever made. I’ll never sell it. Cheers to you for loving and caring for the ultimate driving machine. Keep the content coming 🙌
This car is going to be the ship of Thesseus by the time Kennan is done :) Great to hear of such passion for a car, especially such a noteworthy one.
There's keeping records then there's keeping records. Whatever brings you joy in life.
Good for you, Kennan. Don't let the hate in the comments deter you from owning and enjoying something you clearly love.
True fans of Kennan will remember his first videos and the support he got from us. Glad to see him confident today
I just sold my f10 m5 and I already miss it. I cared for it like my own children and I hope the next owner does so as well.
I'm looking forward to my next fun secondary car -- but I don't think anything will surpass the joy of my m5. It was my dream car, but now I have the memory and not the worry.
I appreciate the soft wall adornments for echo control! Cheers!
This was a good video. Keep it up Kennan.
I very much respect how much you care for your car and how you proceed to sustain it
I’m 20 years old and about 6 months ago bought an e39 M5 in silverstone metallic with 90k miles and it is an amazing car. I’ve owned bmws before but this is the best car I’ve ever owned.
As insane as it is to see these maintenance bills, I love seeing someone else so enamored by a car even after so many years and pain of ownership.
I don’t know that crashing the car and repairing it is considered “maintenance”
You really can’t expect to use a car on a daily basis and never, ever, meet other bodywork. Accidents do happen if you drive, just accept it.
@@raulsalanaranjo6565 Ok, that still doesn't make it maintenance.
@@kuebbyhe said the 3 most expensive years of ownership
Enjoyed this video a lot, Kenan, good stuff. Can't worry about the cost too much when it brings you that much joy.
I’m loving these Kennan vids!
4:48 Kennan put a FERRARI sticker on BMW rear window. LOL
From what I remember he owns a Ferrari, so why not?
He owns one so yeah he can put it
He sold it though.
its a memento from hiim having a 355
Fender/front clip been repainted?
Very cool ,and wow you don’t cut corners Ken. I’ve owned many M cars but never an e39 M5. My favorite is also anther V8 manual M car- the e92 M3.
That poor paint match would drive me insane. I don’t know how he hasn’t went for a full respray yet.
So when somebody buys used bus from us they literally bring them pallet on the forklift with service records.
when you find something to do with your money that brings you this much joy, it couldn't be more worth it
Really looking forward to watching this video! Nothing I love more than hearing a car enthusiast talk about something they're passionate about.
I understand why you like it as i like my e34 530. It really puts a smile on my face!
I know it's pricey but fuck I still love these
I have had to settle for a 540 E39 6MT because I just cannot afford anything "M", even my E60 and F10's are 535i M-Sport versions.. They are both FBO, but still not M5 experience levels.
Absolutely magnificent specimin, Only a 'Kennan' could keep one of these at the level of maintainance that these masterpeices of automotive excellence that are the e39 M5 - undoubedly peak bmw. What people dont get about owning a car like this, is its less an ownership than a stewardship - those that take on the responsibility treat it as that - a responsibility an honor - to keep something truly special in perfect working order, for themselves, and future generations to one day enjoy.Full respect Kennan, youre a true enthusiast and gentleman.
Kennan, don’t be afraid to upgrade, someday. Drove my 98 Camaro SS 18 years, then into my c7 grand sport. I will keep them both until I can’t push in a clutch.
I absolutely love your car. My husband and I were going to buy one new, years ago. We now have an E30 vert and an E30 coupe. Love the wheels on your car.
I sincerely thought it would cost more to own/maintain one of these. Iv yearned for one for a long time, though they aren’t on my immediate radar, this video was helpful and informative on a real ownership experience 😌 thanks Ken
The stack of receipts was a shock for sure. Kennan’s dedication is admirable. Like a captain going down with his ship. ;-)
i can see why kennan is a good employee for a company like cars and bids
What was the original purchase price? Need to add that to the repair total to truly show the cost per mile.
That's probably the most sorted, well maintained, well preserved and best example over all e35 M5 in the world.
It's a very nice high mileage example, but there are lots of near-perfect, all original, lower mileage M5s is circulation.
Will you be at Monterey Car Week this year? I'll be there drooling on all the awesome cars that will be there.
was looking for this exact vid recently lol, couldn’t find a dedicated video
I’m in the process of buying one rn
Wonder if the almost 60k factors in the original purchase price and if not how much was that?
Did you use the Beisan saels on the vanos repair?
