Thank you Ana for your guidance in watering cactus in winter. I've been told by every cactus grower that to keep my cactus totally dry in winter but I've been feeling very nervous. My cacti are changing color and shrinking and shriveled. Worried that I may lose some of them, I watched this video and you gave what to watch for when it is ok to water your cacti. I just gave the neediest ones a sip and I feel much better.
Thank you for this! I've seen so many people tell beginners not to water their cacti and succulents during the winter, some even insulting me for advising to water in the cold months. To happy to see someone with such a large and happy collection shed some light on the topic.
I learned my lesson the hard way. I felt guilty admitting at first that I water even during winter. But then after saying it, I found out many (like you) do the same thing. 😉 Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Ana! As you know, we've had a lot of rain in CA so my cacti and succulents aren't suffering from water loss. It's always good to know what to look for though and since it's normally very dry here, your advice is appreciated!
I was wishing we’d get some of that California rain at that time so I can at least collect rainwater. But whatever I collected just evaporated the next day. Hahaha. But the slight shower helped my garden a lot.
FANTASTIC video Ana :-D I will have to water some of my Cacti and Succulents in the polytunnel soon too as I have a few of my Aloes and Opuntias and Echeverias all very shrivelled, our weather in Ireland has been crazy this Winter, as its been so warm for this time of year and on New Years day we had 60F temperatures and now its dropped down to 35F, all of your plants in your collection and your Desert Garden are looking INCREDIBLE. thanks so much for sharing Ana, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and CAFFEINE and PLANT POWER to Las Vegas for a wonderful weekend XXXX
This was a great update on your winter cacti care😁🤲💖I see you give water because it is a dry winter👍I have been trying my Notocactus leninghausii in my unheated greenhouse and it is doing surprisingly well👌You made a great point about watering your cacti☝️They need a bit of water to keep their roots healthy, exactly🤲💖Your Aloe blue elf is winter hardy. I have been looking for one, and your blue elf has flowers coming😁🙌Wonderful! I see your Ferocactus cylindraceus is doing fine👍And that trichocereus turning orange, that's what mine does every winter too🙏No worries there. Thank you for the video🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you. I’m always so nervous when it is the first time I leave something outside to overwinter. I hope your leninghausii makes it through. It will toughen it.
Awesome video, Ana. A few of mine will need a little bit of water soon, some of the smaller ones are a bit dehydrated. Can’t wait for spring as well, hopefully some of the ones I left in the greenhouse to overwinter will bloom well this year. Your desert gardens are looking great as well considering the time of year. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day and weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜☕️
I have yet to experience my collection to have their winter dormancy. 😂 I give them a fake dormant period though by withholding water for a couple of months. It seems to be working as i see some buds on plants that i never thought would give me flowers. Daz is right. Your desert gardens are looking wonderful. Looking forward to seeing your spring blooms again! 🌸🌺🌼🌵💚😍
Thanks to both of you. Yeah, I’m surprised how my desert garden quickly recovered with just a slight sprinkle of rain. A week ago, the Trichocereus were all shriveled and the Opuntia was flopping. What an amazing difference a little rain can do.
@@edithcoliagrandis great idea “tricking” them that it is winter. 😄 I actually envy you for being able to withhold water for months. You get a break from the plant chores. I still have to water some of mine weekly like the Aloes and Haworthias. The fun never stops. Hahaha

Very interesting video, Ana. Here in northern Italy there is a lot of humidity during the winter, so I won't wet anything until spring, on the contrary I have to try to protect from humidity to avoid rot. I only water the plants that I keep in the house in the warmth. Each wrong watering means a dead plant. Sooner or later I will learn not to make mistakes ... I wish you and your plants a good 2022 🌵
Really interesting to watch your videos and I like how you share your knowledge and experience with the audience. Keep up the good work. Love from Srilanka 🇱🇰
I know what you mean about the Tephrocactus, look at them too hard and they fall apart!!! Do you have any Echinopsis growing in your gardens? When I was a kid in Tucson, we had them in a flower bed ,and they with stood snow at least twice!! They are pretty tough!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a wonderful day!!!Peace, Love, Plants!!! ✌💖🌵🏵🌴🌺🪴🌹🌲🌷🌳💐😃👍
Yes, I can’t grow the Tephrocactus any higher than 3 segments. Hahaha. Maybe I should stop staring at them, then. 😄 I only have the big Echinopsis candicans in the ground. I am thinking of making a Trichocereus and Echinopsis section in my backyard this spring. We’ll see if I can make that happen. 😉
Hi Ana ,, Nice video .. I always follow the way you take care of the cactus..My problem is that my cactus died because I watered it too much. I live in Malaysia..hopefully one day all my cactus will super bloom like yours .. thank you for sharing your knowledge of cactus care ..
Malaysia has humid weather. Go easy on the watering. Your cactus can absorb moisture from the air so unless it is shriveled, try not to water it too much. Thank you for watching!
I completely stop watering all my cacti in winter because humidity here is very often above 90%, currently its raining all day today and 96% humidity 😂 and they still dont properly deflate as yours have
Wow, 96% is very high! With that humidity, I’m sure your soil absorbs some moisture too. I envy you though in the sense that you get a long break from watering chores. 😉
Dear Ana, Happy New Year and many greetings from Croatia, I adore your video clips and have been following you for a long time. Thank you for your hard work.
Great video Ana, I love seeing your collections doing really great this winter , The aloe that flowers they love outside, I have the same one and it just sitting in the corner and they are growing so good.
The tips turned a little pink from the 3 nights of freeze that we had but it sure stressed it enough to flower. So I don’t mind the pink tips. I actually moved some of my aloes outside today. I’ve been babying them too much. Hahaha. Thanks for stopping by!
Learn so much from your videos. Thank u. a few of my cactus have a tan coating growing up from the base. Is this a fungal infection it doesn’t look like scale pictures I have seen. If it’s a fungus what should I use for treatment. Have u already made a video on this?
Check my video on whether it is a cactus rot or not. It explains and shows samples of some markings on a cactus. 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/Ht1HsR1h0Ew/v-deo.html
I live in the Deep South and my cacti still need a little water in winter on sunny days but be careful to never get water on the plant itself or it will often rot.
My plant room is like yours. I get the south facing window sunlight and it gets cold at night. I do have a space heater in the room. I only have the ball cactus and it's pups in a separate pot. But yes I give them a little drink once a month.
Your videos are always so helpful and enjoyable. Whether or not to water in winter always presents a dilemma for me. I like your idea of misting some of them instead of actually watering them. I live in the Pacific Northwest, on the upper Olympic Peninsula, where everything grows mold. I keep my plants indoors with normal household day/night temps and naturally constant humidity of 60%. My cacti did better in my solar adobe house in New Mexico which was always flooded with sunlight & the humidity was a constant 40%. I recently acquired a lovely little Echinocereus Rigidissimus, 'Rainbow Hedge' cactus in a 2-1/2" pot. I noticed that the soil was bone-dry and had pulled away from the sides of the pot. So I watered it. Now, a week later, it has shrunk and become mushy. Is there any chance that it will recover?
Oh no, mushy is bad. You can try to cut off the bottom mushy part, let it callous and try planting it. Though I doubt that you have enough left to plant considering your cactus pot is small, means your cactus is also small. 😔
@@CactusCaffeine Thank you. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I will cut off the top & see if it will callus over, but fear it is just $20.00 in the trash.
OMG, I tried that. The instant I touched it with the knife it came apart, semi-liquified mush all the way through. I've never had a cactus rot before. It was disgusting, shocking, and rather sickening. I'll get a new one in the spring. In fact, I have one on order from High Desert Gardens in Santa Fe to be delivered in April. Since it is one of the most "desert" of desert cacti I will hardly water it at all. If it can survive with almost no rain for many years in its natural habitat, underwatering will only do it good.
Thanks for this great video. What an amazing variety. it’s my First winter with cacti and I can’t stop watering them. It feels mean. I hope I don’t kill them
Very useful Ana 😎 I've recently got a few Tephrocacti so I'll give them a drop. A bit nervous about most of them as it'll stay cold and damp here for a few more months and I don't want the soil hanging wet 🙂
Those Tephrocacti are making me so mad. 😠 I can’t get them to get higher than 3 segments. I actually have a lot of one segments rooting. Either I bump them or they drop by themselves during winter.
When did your Echinocerius Rigidisimus first bloom? How old/what size? Mine has doubled in size and I think she may be big enough this spring, she is about 3.5 inches tall, totally maroon spines, gorgeous. Thoughts???
Such a beautiful cacti collection! Thank you for sharing. I wanted to ask you about the monkey tail. Does it produce pups on its own? Or I have to cut off the stem?
Hey Ana! thank you so much for all of the good information on watering I have been wondering this as it’s my first winter with a big cactus/succulent collection and I have been nervous about what to do. I live in Pennsylvania it has been snowing and raining nonstop and I keep my cacti enclosed on an unheated glass patio That I heat at night time if it goes below 35 degrees Fahrenheit. do you think with all of the rain that I am having that I should just continue withholding water? none of my cacti look too wrinkled so I have a feeling there’s a lot of moisture in the air. thank you in advance!
Unless they are too shriveled, no need to water. High humidity is helping them and your soil get moisture from the air. Let them rest for now. And you get a break as well. 😉
Oh, it gets very cold where you are. My morning temps goes up to the 60’s that is why I can still afford to water. How’s your outdoor desert garden doing?
