Omg. I literally watched one of your videos on queen ants back in August, and walked outside only to find elates swarming the skies! I found so many queens with and without wings. But I could only catch one without wings, as I had only one test tube, which I had made out of to little parts of a container turned around. It was not a very good setup, but I loved my queen so much. When I got some good, real test tubes later, I moved my queen into one, and went out side to find more. But there were no more ants outside. Just the dead bodies of the male elates who had mated. I was disappointed that I had not caught any other ants, but I was very lucky to catch one for my very first time ant keeping. I cared for her in her new setup, and found out she was a Lasius Neoniger. I later read that most queens caught at the end of the year tend to go into hibernation and lay eggs in the spring. I was conserned that she would not lay eggs soon enough, and that she might die. But once again, I was lucky when I came to check up on her and found that she had two eggs! I was so happy! I cared for her and read everything I could find on lasius neoniger ants. A few weeks later she had a larva. I was overjoyed that she had made it this far, and by the looks of how she cared for her eggs so tentatively, she seemed fertilized. Now, in November, three months after I caught her, she has three large larvae. They should be going into the pupa stage soon, and I’m so proud of my queen for how far she has come!
If you read this to the end, thank you for listening to my queen’s story. 😊
Hows it now
I also caught a queen in November 2020
How’s your colony now?
The world needs an update.
My g made a whole story
The best time to catch queen ants is after a rainstorm or on a humid day **lives in a desert**
Lol. I just caught five queens in Arizona
AntsUSA+ lmao
You can always wait the few rains of the year and catch a Pogonomyrmex queen!
Inr
Holy crap you may be right. Today when I walked into work I saw ants swarming the entrance and all around them were tons of queens. I followed them up the side of the building and there were at least dozens of queens.
Cool
Thank u u inspire me so much
One tip I didn't really see here is; Check slow moving water or your friends/public pools during mating season. I can tell you as a pool owner, I find hundreds of queens of many different species in my pool. Also, getting a queen from your friend's pool is like saving a life as pool are a death trap for ants.
YES, this is a good tip! Totally true! Pools are alate black holes!
Same with me
yeah when I had a pool there were a bunch of queens in there throughout the summer
OMG thank you i realized our pool has tons of queen ants 🐜. I have been wanting to keep some ants for some time. Will the Queen ant be okay if i take it out of the pool with it still alive?
Hmmmm so I just messed up a little thing so your talking about nuptial flight season so now I know now that queen ants so I ihave done some research what they are look like on my house there's a lot of kinda. Insects then I kill one those.ah. I so dum I literally kill queen ants because I don't know there were queen ants oh can queen fly through the a solar light is that true 🤔🤨
Now to convince the parents
a
lmao

At least the next Mission Impossible film is sorted

Who's still watching this year
Very useful video, thank you
5 years later and this video is still super helpful
6, almost 7 and still useful
@@sammy_sand_utubeyt69017 I always use it as a chart
Decided to start antkeeping this year.
I live in Europe and I'm super excited because the species I'd like to keep happens to have their mating season earlier than other ant species.
Since it wasn't mentioned in the video - Manica Rubida (the only Manica species in Europe) has it's nuptial flights as early as April with the height in May.
Depending on sources they either continue having flights till Fall or have a second season in September only.
I found a research paper on the Spring flights for the species detailing the weather conditions required.
Basically - they never flight during the days when the temperature is below 18 degree Celsius and preferably when it's around 25 degrees. It is usually a day before it rains.
The height seems to occur between the 1st and the 10th of May but across the three years of research they noted a flight as early as the 20th of April.
Make a diagram of temperatures day by day - when the temperature spikes just to drop the next day chances are the Manica alates were flying and you can go looking for them.
Sorry but I couldn't find any data on the Manica species in America.
Hope this info helps you guys!
Just catched a capenter ant on november
Thanks for the info
I meet flying insects like ant in my room sometimes. Now I realize it's probably black crazy ant queen. I should've capture it
Izutsushi
Same, I've seen them in my house(they were flying and trying to bite me!!) and I've seen them at school, now if only I was interested in ant keeping at that time I might've caught some but I mean black crazy ants literally live in my balcony since my mother keeps many plants so I can find them.
same here and before I'm not interested in ants I always kill them but now I cannot more Queen before there was so many in our house
I had what, when I look back a big queen ant in my room but I beat it to death with a newspaper...
I remember those times when I was little I found huge ants and killing them now I live in a different state and thinking back
I remember how they look and they where probably campounatus
Uuuuhhh😠
If only I was educated when I was that young
Now I can't find anycamponautus
And that's like my dream come true
Only solonopsis molesta
Pogonomermyx
And rarely tetramorium
I've been really trying to get one for 2 years and couldn't yet I see workers everywhere all the time
Anyway I know what you mean

Guys, also remember to watch this AC Tutorial on how to tell Queen Ants from Males and Worker Ants: ua-cam.com/video/XccAZls7Hns/v-deo.html then watch this Test Tube Tutorial ua-cam.com/video/HfzUILyCz8o/v-deo.html and Queen Ant Care Tutorial ua-cam.com/video/JMWxDHBu0c8/v-deo.html for instructions on what to do when you finally find your queen!
+AntsCanada ohh i have a lot of diffrent ants however they are only workers can you do another video on how to find or the state like petalingjaya to find the queen
When u have got a queen ant how does the colony start do u need other worker ants or do u wait for the queen to give birth to them? 🐜
+matt brady Yes, just watch the video links we posted above and it will answer all of your questions.
Can i ask how long does it take an odontomachus sp and formica, egg to hatch into a larvae, and aswell how long does it take to turn into pupae, and last of all to hatch into a worker.
Please help me i got both of them last. Week during the begining of the our rainy season (April),
Both of them have multiple eggs ( >5), and the odontomachus has been fed a diet of the recently fresh termites who also have their naptiul flights during the HEAVY rain, (around 2-4 different species of them).

+AntsCanada i m from india can u plz let me know about the nuptiual fly season
Expectations: I could catch black crazy ants in summer
Reality: I caught a red tropical fire ant🇵🇭
a queen or a single worker
thats true if they mated and are still alive
You caught the ant species that stung my mom? Unbelievabley crazy.
Thanks for doing Australia
Thanks a lot!
When it said take a screenshot I did
i wrote i down
A few minutes ago I caught a queen and it broke its wings of in my hand.
That must be awesome
Delightful Genius It depends on the species. Some will chew them, some will chew them off then eat them, some will rip them off with their legs.
Delightful Genius I’m not sure about Lasius Neoniger but it isn’t uncommon for a queen to keep her wings.
Gotta catch em all antkemon!!
THANKS!!!
Are normal pokeballs good enough to catch the queens?
lol
Net balls work best
"Gotta be
the very best
like no ant ever was
Gotta catch em all!"
You mean test tube ball
For good luck, I like to use nest balls.
I was watching this and went outside with a container and was like “I AM GOING TO FIND A QUEEN ANT AND I WONT COME INSIDE TILL I DO” I went outside 2 minutes later I was freaking out bc I actually found one-
Lucky ass
Ur so lucky! All i see are workers
Wow
I come out and i have to use my bike to get to place where i see only workers but i found a male alate so surely its nuptual flight
i got 2 pavement ant queens lol
finally! thank you
thanks so much
I live in Africa does anyone know when Tetramorium ants fly in the year
I didn't even have to hunt for my queen ant. She managed to find my home perfectly fine on her own, and has now unleashed her armada of sisters into my kitchen from a crack in the kitchen floor.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm trying to start my very first colony, but I'm finding it hard to come across the information in this video (in particular Australia).

So lucky caught a Velvet Ant queen excited to raise the colony
Thanks antscanada my friend got 1 carpenter queen in my school
Really nice guide, thank you for sharing the European Species :D
+AntManUK Hope it helps! :)
So guys, let's goal set! What species of ants are you hoping to catch this Nuptial Flight Season? GO!!!
Alternatively (if you're from Australia), did you catch the queens you were hoping to this anting season?
I'll start... I hope to catch queens of Paratrechina longicornis (I hope I didn't miss the nuptial flights and I'm not too late).
+AntsCanada I Agree, I Have Watched Many Video's On Them And Have Just Been Fascinated By Their Activities And Feeding Habits. When I Was Younger I Remember There Were Hundreds Of Them In My Garden But Haven't Seen Any Recently. Would They Move From An Area Entirely Or Have I Just Been UnLucky In Not Finding Any?
+AntsCanada Id love to catch a Formica SP in the UK they have thus far proven elusive :D best of luck all
+AntsCanada A sidenote to one of your tips is that I would highly recommend keeping multiple queens in one test tube for Solenopsis Invicta. As long as the test tube is placed in an outworld and opened when the larva starts to pupate the colony should be safe. Yes the queens will bicker but the victorious queen will come out healthier and better off than she would of by herself. The nanatics will be better off too. The loser queen will leave the test tube which is why it must be open otherwise they will pretty much fight to the death.
Alternatively you can have a bunch of opened test tubes in an outworld and setup an artificial brood raiding event. Eventually all the colonies will merge into one large one. This happens all the time in the wild and I managed to do this successfully in captivity. I, unfortunately, did not see it happen in person other than the fact that the colonies merged when I was away from them.
+AntsCanada Anyone in PA USA finding any ants?
+AntsCanada I am looking forward to potentially catching Prenolepis Imparis or Camponatus spp. Very excited as this will be my first colony!
*heck im from chile*

walk a block away
it's so fun to say
why its so you get a ant that has already mated thats not funny
Yeah right like I'm gonna get a permit to pick up an ant off the sidewalk lmao.
Saying that makes it so if on the off chance someone does get in trouble he isnt responsible
....you dont need one... dumbass. he said on private property or gov property... nice way to ruin the vibe.
Catz Gamez
He said public or government property actually. Dumbass.
Backwards he said private
but in here in Philippines you don't need permit and there's a lot of alates flying during night
im a year late from this video but im trying to find queen ants here in the philippines, i currently live in a village , and its hard to find queens or its either im just a noob. Any recommendations to where i would find queens?
easy you probably live near a forest go there at noon time and find some ants follow them to their nest and pour some lime mix with water solution into it and soon queen will come out soonly after 10 or 15 mins or so then voila! u have your own ant queen and it`s easy to find ants colonies at ur place its hard for me i live in a city i am from Pakistan and i am currently living in Karachi and it`s *d*ucking hard to find a ant colony near my place and even far from my place i can`t find any colonies so if u have some info help me please !!!! -____-

I just watched a lot of your videos.. I didnt know ants were so interesting. I was killing them all the time for no reason and I feel bad now lol
ants are just misunderstood its sad to think there being killed every day it makes me sad
I caught 2 queen today with now wings do they need male, I live in North America
First one was crawling around my parking lot ant the other one climb on my leg
Do not try to give them a male, just keep them until they either die or produce workers.
The shadow Lista aka Lucas ok thanks
The shadow Lista aka Lucas if she start laying egg should I start feeding her
No, wait until the workers start trying to get out, she will surive until the workers hatch and while they grow up.
In a month or something the workers will hatch, then you have to wait a little more until they try to get out, then you can feed them a little honey.
I also love ants and I also live in Canada
Im new to ant keeping and today on my first day looking for queen ants (4/24/17, on my birthday :) ) I found two queen ants (They are red). I do not know what the Species is though so I should get on that. Thank you to AntsCanada for all the help your awesome my little brother and I couldn't do it without you. We order 50 test tubes but they come in two days. hopefully the ants don't get stressed out. We just have them in a small Tupperware container.
Permit to catch an ant? :-D haha
