Good point about Telstra and Optus. Whilst Telstra still have the best overall coverage, you'd be surprised at how many places there are out bush where Optus reception is decent but Telstra reception is non-existent. Not quite the same but I've been using a dual SIM phone for years just because it's nice to have Telstra and Optus on standby, in case I'm somewhere where only one or the other is available and I need to make a call (or be contactable).

Often, like now, tourist destinations like the south west of Western Australia have awful coverage as the Telstra network is almost completely shutdown. I couldn’t even maintain a phone call this morning and haven’t had 4g internet that was usable for a week in Busselton. Optus however has less traffic and is working great! We’ve had this on a. Few trips in busy periods where Optus is working good and Telstra is just congested to the point of being g usless.
Hi Jeff, minus Optus this is my setup. I do use a panel antenna as well as the Omni for my remote camp, depending where and whether I need the gain. A hint for your fellow youtubers: Switch the phone to airplane mode then activate wireless and bluetooth. Stops the phone looking for better signals and makes a huge difference to battery life.Nick
Good point with turning off data, it doesn’t affect the phone with no sim in obviously, but for any others it sure would save battery especially in low coverage areas. I should remove the TV antenna and put a panel phone antenna in its place, bloody great idea Nick!

No intention of having a go at you for making a video about internet whilst camping but I would like to mention that the term WiFi shouldn't be used to describe the internet because it perpetuates confusion. Wifi is one of many methods to connect to the internet, just like a dirt road or highway allows you to reach a freeway (however a dirt road is not a freeway), best analogy that comes to mind at the moment...Cheers

No problem. To mount the antenna onto the wineguard I just used a bit of ally square tube the same size as what makes the main mast and just bolted it on as a slight extension to get the base of the antenna above the tv antenna.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Optus and Telstra use slightly different frequencies so it’s good to make sure your antenna is wide band and can handle as many as possible.

I've been considering something like this, as I too am not a fan of Cel-Fi GO. Will look more into it now. I was a user of Chromecast but found it so unreliable. I've now switched to Fire TV (Amazon). Have you experienced using this on your set-up?
I haven’t used the Fire TV on this setup but it should work fine as it’ll think your just at home. The chrome casts did have a period a year or two ago where they were really bad but the last 12-18 months have been really good, the best ever.

I actually haven't put one on the car as yet. I'm planning to do that, and it will most likely be a lower Dbi shorter style on the roof rack. It will work better up there than on the bullbar. Why don’t you hotspot your phone with the chrome cast. For me it works fine.
