Alright, anime reviews. Yea or nay? As mentioned in the video, they take a fraction of the time a normal video on the channel takes and I could very easily maintain regular full-length uploads in between my bigger projects. Let me know what you think and if you like the idea, which animes would you like to see me cover in the future? Note that the style will be slightly different in the future to avoid copyright issues like this video faced (MASSIVE pain).
Also, I just noticed that the song I mentioned liking in Episode 1 and the song I mentioned in Episode 9 are actually the same. Yeah, I don't know how I didn't catch that.

In terms of anime reviews, maybe do what you've done here and focus on VN adaptations, connecting them to your gaming content logically.
It'd be interesting to get more full series/episode by episode synopsis and critique for regular anime too, but maybe consider a second/separate channel so thr anime content doesnt end up overshadowing or shifting focus away from the gaming content.

For me, I highly recommended Muv-Luv Alternative's best mecha anime of 2021, such as 86 Eighty-Six, Kyoukai Senki, Rumble Garanndoll and even Sakugan. Along with The Genius Prince's Guide to Raising a Nation Out of Debt is my newest favorite anime of 2022.

Just a minor correcti, TSFs are what humanity adapted from planes specifically because of the Laser-classes that were unleashed at Kashgar when the Soviets and Chinese were making headway into taking over the first Hive, rendering air support in most cases fatal. They don't share name designations with fighter planes for no reason, it's because they ARE what fighter planes were adapted to. Tanks, helos, AFVs, infantry, and everything else used in combined arms warfare is still present.

FYI, the anime *completely* adapted from the manga, not the VN (except episode 1 of course). Since you haven't read the manga, no wonder you missed manga only content such as Valkyries battle with Komaki and co. Actually, they did a pretty good job adapting from the manga, every scene has similar shots and angle so when I watched the anime, I can understand why they're skip a lot.
So, before you watch season 2, I suggest to read the manga first so you'll know what to expect.

I would very much like it if you focused on the content you've enjoyed, and left adaptations like this in a shorter video. Personally, as with most fans of Muv Luv, we know that the adaption wasn't what we wanted so a video on diverting anime fans to VN fans would have been better.
As for anime reviews? I'm down for that, but an hour might be too much and better left for longer games like VN.

    • @Adze

I went in pretty much blind and I wrote the script as I went (the words I spoke were legitimately my thoughts from immediately after watching each episode) so I had no idea if I'd like it or not until I started watching. And as far as video length, I tend to just kind of write until I feel like I'm done. I didn't set out to make this video an hour long, it just kind of happened. I know I can be very long winded at times.
Maybe if I do future reviews divided into 2-episide sections, that might help condense a bit, especially if I'm reviewing a fairly mid series like MLA was. I imagine these will get better with practice. I really don't know all that much about anime as an artistic medium just yet

Just really sad to see, I feel like muv luv is such a hard series to adapt, but definetly could of been better than this. A one episode version of extra and the rest being unlimited would of been so much better than this. Muv luv really deserves like a flagship series that's like 100+ episodes long but the way the story is structured it just wouldn't get the viewership. Muv luv is truly art, a lot of the best stuff just isnt popular, to make it popular you have to focus on a few aspects and make it palatable, attack on titan basically did that, a story as complicated as muv luv needed a production team on the same level as the source material to be properly adapted. Thanks for going through it, might watch it just to see different angle but seems like a disappointment.

  • @Frost-01

The problem here is this anime was a homage to the muv-luv franchise and its fans, and they did mention that specific character building details were omitted in order for people to actually go check out the VN itself/manga. The manga for the most part expands on some of the scenes that the VN itself didnt cover, atleast that's what i remembered from it.
Also the music used during the chase scene was from Evan call also, title being: Not Dead Yet.

Total Eclipse and especially Schwarzmarken are far better than this travesty of an adaption. Both of which were animes first then expanded to light novels that were never finished. The First 2 episodes of Total Eclipse are 9/10 excellent, where a constant state of dread is felt throughout.

@@Adze To be fair, the TE VN is RATHER different in perspective and stuff from the anime (which was actually released first, in contravention to normal procedure). Not saying it's different, but you should watch the TE anime first imo. The VN puts things into perspective and adds stuff you'd be headscratching over otherwise. Also the TE anime is only 2/3 to 1/2 of what the VN was. There was also supposed to be routes in the VN but they got cut smh. Whole crazy fiasco over an artist who traced, had to redo a lot of the art.
The Schwarzesmarken anime is good for, at best, an intro to what it's about. The characters and motivations and etc were completely butchered by the director, though the 2nd VN ended up having their issues too. But also TE should be watched first in any case.

    • @Adze
      @Adze  2 роки тому +1

Marimo had no real significance in the anime so far. She's legit just a background character at this point.
If I had to guess, the way they'll handle Chomp is that they'll basically do a really good job with the scene itself, but the anime-onlys won't really feel the impact since they have no real emotional connection with her. That's kind of been the trend for a lot of the big emotional scenes.
Like, the last two episodes of S1 were actually really good in a vacuum. The adaptation could have been good if the circumstances were different

Well, I think a find a place of hard debates.
First of all, I read the VN first, and I was very disappointed by the anime, like many other readers. Everything was cut or missed.
In my opinion, you can't understand and bound many details of the story, because all is only focus on Takeru (& and also Yuuko). Meiya, Sakaki, Mikki, Kei and also Mikoto don't exist. That was a shame. Even I know that the "first season" took place in the 1/4 of the VN (in reading time). Then, the out first episod which was excellent! Interesting things back only to episode 8 or 9, with the Shogun part.
This is not a simple job to put a VN story, when the main character spend half-time in his mind, in anime.
Then, I thought to abandon the anime and clean the MuvLuv Total Eclipse story VN (majority of stories about MuvLuv franchise are on Steam!).
But, the 2nd season came. Now, there are more details, some scene I have watched are remastered. I think this can be a good reboot with better skins for all characters.
Even if the beginning was not that I was expected, I think it's not a failure. I would continue and &end again the story, but yeah. I don't think I'll cry this time.
    Maybe?
(((for those who would know how many reading time it was for the 3 VNs:
-ML Extra = 10-12 hours for 1 way (there are multiple endings for all characters, except Marimo!)
    -Unlimited = 20-24 hours
    -Alternative = 80 hours
There are some many details about the story and the world, but it doesn't feet to everyone to read for a long time. This is a very big world, other story exist with different way.)))
Tell me, I read some comments, and I was surprise to find some people understand the majority of the meanings and the background of the story. I thought that was impossible.

If it’s any consolation I immediately understood the 3 different timelines of Muv Luv in the first few episodes of this series despite never having touched the VNs. I actually enjoyed the story of the anime and thought the anime was great. I had no trouble understanding the idea of the VNs from just the anime. And honestly I actually prefer this adaptation cause the first VN seems like it would put me to sleep, I am less interested in the characters dynamics then the post apocalyptic alien invasion though so.

As someone who read the VN (liked but not loved it), and after hearing all the expected anime adaptation HATE that VN fans always have, I appreciated this being a pretty fair review despite your middling opinion on it. Taking into account both as someone who loves the VN and trying to understand an anime-only viewer (one thing I think a lot of VN adaption haters dont take into account, or for some reason expect always 1-1 adapations.)
Also I probably wont watch the anime till its fully adapted. Also I actually like the anime adaption's character designs and think the original 'gundam haircuts' looked silly to me. But I guess I'm in the minority and Im the fanbase the anime adaptors were trying to appeal to.

It's bizarre that we live in an era of adaptions for various classics with attention and care to preserve the art style of its source, regardless of adaption's quality, just to have Muv Luv deviate away from its source this much. Why even bother adapting it in the first place if your show is going to resemble a skinwalker.

    • @Adze
      @Adze  2 роки тому +1

If I had to make a choice, I'd say Muv-Luv did it better, but it's really an apples to oranges comparison since Muv-Luv went with a time loop system whereas Chrono Trigger made it so you could actively move back and forth in time.
Muv-Luv's time travel was definitely much more logically consistent (CT had a few continuity errors) and it has a basis in real life science, which I appreciate. Chrono Trigger's time travel is really tight as a gameplay mechanic and as a core gimmick. Even though the rules for time travel kind of changed whenever the story needed them to, it was done in such a way that it was easy to ignore the inconsistencies. I kind of view CT's time travel on the same level as Back to the Future. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's fun so who cares?
Overall, they both achieved their goals, but I'd say Muv-Luv is easily the winner on a technical level.

this portion of the series needs to be a long episode run, like 20 - 25 episodes, with an equally significant run given to the following arcs, with a total runtime about 100 - 120 episodes to properly flush the characters in detail.

So my first introduction to the franchise was the anime. I found it compelling enough that rather than waiting for the 2nd season, I picked up VNs.
I actually prefer the anime. I found VNs too verbose and extraneous. Characters I liked and found compelling in anime, in VNs completely insufferable (especially Takeru). I found myself holding down return key for large parts of Alternative and Unlimited, and I could not finish Extra.
I can see why people who are enamored with VNs being disappointed by the anime. With all the conversations and expositions in VN, the readers could literally develop emotional ties to the main cast of characters, and then come to feel like they are personal friends. No 3-season ensemble cast epic TV show is going to deliver that. When a character dies, you are not going to feel like a friend you’ve gotten to know after many hours of interaction has died.
But I would argue that ML has a lot more to offer than just viewer building friendship with the characters and feeling profound sense of loss when they depart. It has a very interesting and well constructed world of alternative history, metaphysics, politics, sociology, cultures. Extraordinary set of events that are not completely magical ‘deus ex machina.’
Then you have a cast of characters with distinct personalities and backgrounds, who you can watch reacting and trying to cope with extremely difficult circumstances arising from this world. You don’t necessarily have to feel like they are personal friends to be able to relate to their plights. You just need to have the characters’ situations be plausible and their reactions convincing. In ML story, they do indeed. And in the anime, in my opinion, they do as well.
So you should not expect something that the medium cannot possibly deliver, and if you cannot escape this bias, then should recuse yourself from passing a judgment.
While not perfect, I think the anime stands on its own, has picked up only the necessary elements from the source material. In fact, they should focus screen time on key main characters (Takeru, Yuuko, Kasumi, Sumika, Meiya).
On a completely different note, soundtrack of VN is superior to that of the anime. I hope they use more of the original themes in the next season.

As an anime only (TE and Schawrzesmarken and some TSFIA), I literally couldnt give a shit about episodes 2-8. This show is a lot more enjoyable when the story is more on the war against the BETA and humanity's desperate struggle to exist and far less on the harem / dicking around at base

    • @Adze
      @Adze  Рік тому

Unfortunately, Muv-Luv Alternative's purpose is to be the payoff for the dozens of hours of buildup that took place in Extra and Unlimited (eg: the volcano scene was this whole big thing in Unlimited that served as both a showcase of Meiya's character and tied into the themes and philosophical questions the trilogy explores. It was referenced in a single line of monologue in the anime).
Most of what's in the anime is only compelling if you've experienced what came before and I do not believe it's possible to adapt Alternative without at LEAST adapting Unlimited first. Muv-Luv is ultimately about the characters and how they react when thrust into this apocalyptic setting and about Takeru's growth from an immature kid to a dependable war hero (and of course, a big part of that growth happens in Unlimited, which they didn't adapt).
If you get the chance, I would highly recommend trying out the VNs. Pretty much the only saving grace the anime had for me is that there were a handful of scenes that were actually pretty faithfully recreated and were surprisingly good in a vacuum. It's just a shame to see what they did to one of my favorite pieces of media.

@@Adze Honestly, I really don't get why Adapting the Muv Luv Trilogy has never been done before and even less why they are having so much issues adapting it now that they finally got to it. Extra and Unlimited could be done in a single Anime season. Extra being 5-6 episodes and 6-7 for Unlimited (Standard anime season of 12 episodes). Then have Alternative be about 2ish seasons. 30 to 40 episodes. You have series like Jojo with seasons lasting up to 39 episodes, or ones like Higurashi or Attack on Titan that are several seasons of 24 episodes each. So it's not like long series can't be adapted into an anime.

Yeah, that story beat makes way more sense with context from the Unlimited VN where that scenario was the crux of the philosophical question of ethics vs pragmatism. But since they didn't adapt Unlimited, it holds zero emotional weight in the anime
Also, IIRC it was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back where the rebels viewed the elected government as having systematically betrayed the people and the shogunate.
It was a complex issue that they were unable to adequately explain in 22 minutes. I strongly recommend checking out the VN trilogy. The anime doesn't even hold a candle to it
