Love these videos, mate! ^^ Rance is such a fun series, glad to see it getting the recognition it deserves. Even if not every installment is exactly master-class, there's always something fun with these games, and I look forward to seeing what you make of the others. :) PS: I heard Rance 03 is finally confirmed to be in translation by MangaGamer. It'll take a few years no doubt, but that's a pretty exciting prospect considering how long the game has gone untranslated for!
It's actually pretty interesting. This was Orion's first time being in charge of Rance art and there are a ton of notes in Alice's Mansion and the CG gallery where he talks about how he approached the design of all the characters in 5D. So a lot of the design decisions were very experimental and I find it all fascinating.
Its almost fun how this game was made when Alicesoft was borderline in bankruptcy. Even if you dont like the title, at least give it a shot for Rizna and Copandon.
Yeah 5D is mid for me (mostly because I have bad luck and barely have enough luck to even finished it) it was not a good time but even I have to agree with your points, fortunately VI onwards is where they got their footing I do hope you enjoy the rest of the games have to offer
This is the only Rance game I’ve finished. Very unique but I enjoyed the experience overall. It’s far from perfect but the aesthetic and charisma the game has really pushes it forward. I like RNG so I had not problem with that. There were like 2 battles that made me rage a couple of times but if you keep trying you’ll eventually pull through. The story and dialogue are hilarious, especially the interactions between Rance and Sill. Everyone who’s a fan of the series has to atleast try it once.
Yeah, Rance 5D is the only canon timeline game that I've only played once. It's not a bad game, but I never felt any drive to go back to it, even though I'm a huge Rance fan.
I myself am not big ban of 5D mainly because I find the gameplay intolerable but both kikichikou and VI are absolute bangers and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Rance 5D really is only worth playing if you are already deep into the Rance rabbit-hole, so somebody can understand the origins of Rizna/Copadon. Otherwise, to get somebody into the series I would recommend any of the later games (6-9,) over this, depending on the taste of the person I'm trying to rope into Rance.

I will cover the entire series eventually, but I'm currently on a mini-haitus, at least for "big" videos due to real-life stuff eating all my free time. No promises as far as when the rest of the Rance games will get videos, but unless I get hit by a bus or something, they will happen.
Is this the Unlimited SaGa of the series? Hot take: I think Octopath's art style is a mess of overdone blur/lighting. But I'm pretty sensitive to post-processing effects.
Gotta say 5D was easily my least favourite title from Alicesoft repertoir. Lots of RNG with not much strategy and a story you could honestly easily skip , especially the black orb stuff, as someone who never played Rance 4 I really couldn't care less, about those creatures and it felt like a lengthy filler, between overall more interesting and funny Rance shenanigans. Best parts were easily the characters and a fair share of humor, introducing one of my favourites, being Copandon and giving some spotlight to Feliss. Rizna was fine, nothing too special or bad just fine and I never was a big fan of Athena, but that's just my personal preference . In the end I'm happy people can enjoy this game much more than I did , especially since it gets A LOT better from this point on. Take your time with Kichikuou Rance , it's a big one and the only gripe I remember with it, was that it's mechanics were a little too simple and got repetitive after a while, also playing it without a guide can be a bit confusing, with how to progress certain characters stories.
Good Rance shenanigans and all but man what a baaaad game from a gameplay perspective. I got locked out of finishing this game because I was on the last bit of that giant countdown on top of the screen. I was on chapter 5, literally before the final event, and as you'd imagine I couldn't even get to the dialogue before the final boss (shoutout to some dude for uploading the ending lol so I can at least see what happens at the end). But yeah this is one of the few games that made me genuinely angry while playing it, what were Alicesoft smoking when they were coming up with the mechanics for this game, because let me tell you an RPG based entirely on RNG is a terrible terrible idea and not fun at all. Especially with that giant countdown that actually limits what you can do which paired with the randomness of your actions just made for horrible experience. I am aware of the troubled development of this game but that does not excuse the terrible game design choices made here. You can have a troubled/limited production and still come out somewhat decent or great even. The story was okay-ish I guess but when it comes to the overall Rance canon not all that much actually happened. However I since the gameplay was so ass I couldn't even enjoy that. And y'know I'd imagine the gamePLAY part of your GAME should be the most enjoyable otherwise I'm not gonna care for your story not matter how good written it is since I am already so bitter from playing your stupid game. I had to start a new game like 5 times, on 5 different occasions because the game would find a new way to soft-lock me out of progressing because the terrible RNG I got dealt. I do NOT like this game. As much as I love Rance I genuinely had a better time with the PC98 titles.

Way I can figure out this is an earlier Rance title: Rance has a serious face in his HP card instead of his perpetually smug face.

Kinda messed up that my endgame party consisted of Monster Girls instead of human party lol. That's how broken they were once captured.
