Unboxing 2017 Dodge Journey - Why It's Better Than You Think

  • For today's unboxing review we bring you the 2017 Dodge Journey, a crossover that's literally a dinosaur within the industry. How come? Because it's been on the market since 2009 and it hasn't been completely redesigned, rather only facelifted. But those updates have been hugely important, because the original Journey was a letdown. Its interior plastics were cheaper than those found on Tonka toys, and the overall design, inside and out, wasn't very attractive. While there's not a whole lot that can be done about its exterior, the interior today is world's better. We especially liked our sampler's optional 8.4-inch infotainment screen and an abundance of soft touch materials throughout.
Powered by the optional (which we highly recommend) 3.6-liter V6 with 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available on every trim level, a major plus for those living in snow. Fuel economy? By today's standards it's not very good, coming in at 17/25 mpg city/highway. Aside from the base model, all Journeys come equipped with three rows of seats, something not available on, say, the Ford Edge. Dodge likes to say the Journey is the most affordable three-row V6 AWD crossover on the market, and we were surprised by how much we liked it. Enjoy the review!

I Bought a 2016 Journey SXT AWD model on December 5th 2019, it had just under 61,000 Miles and paid $13,850 out the door for it. I drive an average of 3,000 mile per month for my job and now have 73,328 Miles on it. I can say I`ve had no issues with this vehicle whatsoever, I do change the oil every 5,000 miles and did a transmission flush at 70,000 due to the amount of driving I do. I typically drive vehicles well into 250,000 mile range before purchasing something else, and maintenance is key to the longevity of a vehicle. Also to point out the fuel mileage I get is around 25 MPG mostly Highway driven mile, and I cruise around 75 to 80 MPH hours on end without issue. So for me and the amount of driving I do this is a perfect vehicle with plenty of space inside for my needs.

I had a 2010 Journey SXT and was quite happy with it , traded it in for a 2014 Journey SXT , fully loaded at the time and loved it also. I was waiting for the 2020 to come out and now to get the same options I need to upgrade to the Journey Gt. The only option I don't require is the 3RD row seating. I like the available space with only 2 rows. Also I prefer FWD as AWD is not required by me. Driving my 2014 is Comfortable, great mileage and with all the comforts and amenities ( Lighted doors, heated mirrors, GPS, Blue Tooth, heated seats and Steering wheel, 19" wheels, super suspension, remote starting, Etc.) I will be buying another real soon.

My mother had to find a replacement for her rear-ended and totaled 2007 Chrysler Town & Country. She WANTED to look at an "Escape-type" vehicle. So we looked at an Escape and whatever the Chevy/Buick version of an Escape is. She didn't like the cramped cockpit of the Escape, and the salesman said, "Well, I have this Journey..."
$14,000 later, my mother owned a 2017 Dodge Journey SXT. It was a rental out of Kansas City, MO with less than 40,000 miles on it. It still has the original warranty on it.
The pluses: That engine is a bit of a beast. It will bite you off the line if you let it. The storage is nice with the 3rd row folded flat. And in the SXT trim, it's an acceptable looking vehicle inside and out. The in-the-passenger-seat-cushion storage up front and the footwell storage in the middle row are very nice bonuses.
The minuses: Mom's SXT does not have the big infotainment system and thus no back up camera or bluetooth. The step-in. The door sills on these things is WIDE. If you're used to sliding in and out of a sedan or even a minivan, be prepared to long-jump your way in and out of a Journey. No roof rail crossbars. They are available, but they are extra. $200 - $500 extra.
If you can find one for a decent price, you (probably) won't be disappointed with it. You can do a lot worse for a lot more money.

You can pick up one these a few years old(3 or 4) fully loaded with low miles (under 60k) for under 20k. That is a bargain. If you live in a area where you get a lot of snow, rain, have kids, need a daily driver, and do not want to be caught dead in a minivan this is the crossover for you. Spending 50k on a depreciating liability that the weather and your young kids are going to destroy is financially inept. Wait til the kids get older and are more responsible before you buy a luxury suv. Buy it used also. New is for suckers.

Maybe a review for a three row crossover like the Journey is best when it comes from someone that has a family. My wife and I needed a three row to fit us and 4 kids. We looked at all the typical offerings from Kia, Chevy,GMC, Buick, Toyota and Honda. By far the best bang for the buck when it comes to options etc was found with the 2016 Dodge Journey Crossroad Plus 3.6L AWD. And its actually enjoyable to drive compared to my '17 RAM, '14 Challenger and '04 Monte SS. Its got a great engine, 6spd Auto, 19x7 rims with 225/55R19's with a performance suspension. I mean the thing handles real good for a 3 row crossover. I found the storage areas in the floor and under the front psgr seat nifty. All in all after 15k miles and 15mnths of ownership I highly recommend this vehicle. The only thing I added for wknd family trips is a Thule roof box.

@douglas ruopp You shouldn't talk trash about something you don't understand. The base model with 4 cylinder Hyundai engine and 4 speed transmission is the one that earned Dodge Journey its terrible reputation. The powertrain is both underpowered and unreliable. The 3.6 liter 300hp engine, on the other hand, comes with 6 speed transmission. It's statistically more reliable than most Japanese truck powertrains, much less a Ram. The power to weight ratio is far more favorable compared to a ram unless it has the hemi, or most other cars. Btw, no passenger car or truck in existence will have "twice the room" as a SUV with longer wheelbase than a Lincoln Town Car. And "10x more reliable" isn't close to being true even for the 4 cyl 4 speed powertrain, for the 6 cyl 6 speed one, it's statistically less than 1x. There are things to doubt in OP's post, namely it "handles real good," which would be a highly unlikely achievement for a car with longer wheelbase than the Lincoln Town Car. But instead of picking on that, you decided to go with some hyperbolic and outright impossible lies.

I bought a fully loaded top of the line 2014 Dodge Journey and I use to own a 2011 Hyundai Tucson before it and I feel like I went from a cheapo slow small suv to a fast high end suv lol. I happen to love the old school mean boxey look of it as well. The sticker price of my Dodge Journey rt is 40k Canadian and to be honest with you I wouldn’t have bought it new for that price, but for a used crossover only costing me 12k Canadian its a bargain, infact it’s the best you can get for that price. To be honest though if I had 40k to blow on a new suv I would have went Toyota for sure lol. I refuse to finance or lease, i buy my cars out right.
I wouldn’t call it boring to drive though, it has some nice power in the high rpms.

In August of 2017 I bought a used basic SE Journey 2017 4 banger with 3100 miles for $15,321 out the door. As i don't carry a lot of people I didn't need the third row seating. Living in So. Cal. not much of a need for 4 wheel drive. I have over 60,000 miles, replaced the tires and battery (poor design placement) and had no other problems. I do my own maintenance like oil, filter, fluids, spark plugs, etc. changes myself. Use synthetic motor oil and high quality plugs. Front brake pads replacement due in the next few months. With a four banger, not a speed demon by any means, but gets the grand kids and me where I need to go. Mileage from LA to Vegas at 65 to 75 MPH about 30. Street mileage is poor. Street/Hwy 24.5 MPG, below average considering its a 4 banger.

I want a good, affordable SUV that will get me to and from work, as well as functional for road trips, and I need AWD for winter driving as well. If you are watching this in 2021 a note to add to UConnect. There are a lot of software issues with iPhones, for example USB Music playback no longer works. This is due to software changes in iOS over the years, and there has not been a UConnect update to fix this. This has been a problem for a couple of years and I doubt we will ever see an update to fix it. Bluetooth playback works fine if it pairs which is another issue, AUX works without issue. The UI is fine but the vendor seems to have stopped releasing updates within about 2 years of moving to the newer radio, so just be aware of that folks with iPhones.

I have a 2017 Journey Crossroads AWD. I love it. I bought it for a few purposes. I always have the third row folded and so there is a lot of trunk room. The standard roof racks are perfect for my Kayak. With the passenger seat folding flat I can sleep in the car comfortably. It's good on fuel. I don't have to worry about anyone stealing it, lol. (Who would steal one?) They sell for a good price second or even third hand in my area anyway. I had a ford edge and I think the space is comparable, but Ford is too expensive nowadays. Ford Escape is too small. It's sporty looking enough that my husband doesn't mind driving it. I will get the windows tinted when I am ready to sell and hoping to get about $18k for it with 150,000 km. The only thing I don't like is the passenger seat being manual. It sits too high for me. Air conditioned seats would have been nice also. But I love my car.

Wow, what a horrible review. This guy knows nothing about this vehicle. "You're not buying this because you love driving"? How are you going to tell someone what they are buying a vehicle for? I'm a single guy with no kids and I'd buy one, why? I like to sit a little higher up, would have the 3rd row if perhaps I needed it, optional V6, great features even in lower models. Dude you need to review a lot better.
