- Just giving a few tips on how to play with a metronome to become better at strumming guitar chords.
Doing a few basic patterns and subdivision at 94 beats per minutes and then doing the same thing with palm mutes! Crank it up and get on time!
Palm Mute Video: • Guitar Palm Muting and...
The first ten seconds of all your videos are hilarious and then you continue to give an A+ tutorial. Thanks for being awesome.
Thanks so much Ezra! I'll keep em coming!
this dude gives the best intros on youtube
Thanks so much!
Top man and top quality tuition. Thank you for taking the time to do what you do!
just the lesson I've been waiting for. thanks again
Thanks for watching Barry!
Been playing all my life, and being less than a natural talent, my playing is less than great. Your lessons are so easy to follow, so I will be spending a LOT of time here. Thank you. I learned a good bit just in an hour this morning. PS, looks like a 415 Taylor, just like one of my Taylors. A very balanced gentle guitar.
So great to hear! Thanks for reaching out! Yeah that's a Taylor GA3, love those guitars.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm 22 years old and I've only been playing guitar for a week now so I am just binge watching UA-cam haha. You explained the usefulness of metronomes combined with strum patterns so well! 5 Stars
Now you are 27. What's changed?
YAAASS thanks man for listening to the suggestion. love your videos.
Happy to help! Thanks for the great idea!
Best strum vid ive found ,nice and down to earth , easy to follow
"More often than not you're just stabbing at pieces of time" sums up the first full two years of me playing guitar.
+Ian Ross Stab no more! Get that counting on!!
Great video to get you up to speed in using a metronome and the different elements of strumming.
Thanks for checking it out!
Congratulations on your great classes! You have a lot of personality, keep pushing and you will be really big! Cheers from Brazil.
Thanks Gustavo! I'll keep em coming :)
YOUR A BEAST MAN !!! Just what i needed....and you're right dude..music is ALL ABOUT TIMING !!! You can play the right note but if its not at the right time then it dont matter that the note was right
Right on Richard!
make it look easy. right hand is underatted. makes the sound. love the video!
This video is a real straight on point awesome choice for guitar players to watch.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this lesson. Exactly what I needed and very helpful.
Great to hear it Ed!
I think you are pro now😊🙂
Excellent teacher, thank you.
Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you Sean, very helpful lesson!
Happy to help Jaime!

Agreed! Awesome guitar teacher!!!
Thanks so much Fredrik!
another excellent lesson Sean this is really helpful man
Thank you man!
This is a really good tutorial. Thought i wouldn’t get anything from it, but i got heaps. Including i have had my metronome too quiet, doh!
Awesome... Live long
You're the man sean, thank you
Thanks so much!
I'm so glad that I came across this video I'm newer to guitar and I don't know where to strum up on a metronome on Beats of four. Like for the song purple rain I've found videos of strumming pattern but I don't know how to use the metronome when to up strum
Glad to hear it helped!
Love your intro!
Great teacher
Great Lesson..
really loved it...
Glad you did :)
Tq for your strumming session bro
Great job. Keep it up
Thanks for watching!
just watching the intros of your videos are amazing the lessons are secondary.
Thanks so much :)
i was just strugglin with a strumming pattern at 70bpm 6/8 tempo, this was very helpfull, thanks
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
love your videos!
Thanks so much!
nice Explanation it help me ,thank's
you are the best for an old man beginner like me. God bless Daniel
Thanks for watching :)
Great lesson. Thanks. I downloaded an app and wow this helps a lot keeping time. ANd the selective cord striking thrown in helps make it interesting.
Strumming practice is what I am doing while finger tips develop. Which is what I suggest to all beginners. If your fingers hurt too much don't skip the day. Simply practice strumming and perfect the way you strike the strings, along with keeping time. No wasted days. No down time.
Even with out using the fret board you can make strumming interesting and fulfilling. Every now and then try a cord out. By the time your finger tips fully develop and no longer hurt, the strumming should be getting natural, so now the focus can be on proper cords and changeovers.
I find that as long as my fingers hurt the cords are just for testing momentarily. By the time I get fingers positioned right so all strings ring clear my fingers hurt too much to strum more then 1-2 times to see how it sounds. That G cord is hell
Good advice! Thanks for watching!
Thanks, struggle with timing and was told to get a metronome a while back. I will now 👍
Have at it! Rock on!
helpful teaching. approach is interesting. thank you.
Thanks for checking it out!
thank you sir you
you tought me great secreat I am going to practice
That "stabbing a piece of time" if done correctly goes pretty good when a Marine Band A warp kicks in :)
Great intro lol. Love this guy
Thanks so much for watching!
You are the baptist of guitar players.
Thanks very much you rock😎🎸
Happy to help!
great lesson again, harder than it sounds this slow mo. but worth the effort. cheers
Right on man, thanks for watching!
You've got the same Korg metronome I do. Since I got a looper pedal, though, I never practice with the metronome. Instead, I use the metronome to record a rhythm track into the looper, then practice to that. Way more fun.
How come you hardly ever play my GPCPA4, you always have that Taylor?
I always enjoy your videos, and often get something out of them, too. Thanks, Sean.
He's the best.. i started 4 months ago.. and feels so pro already lol.. thx to +Sean Daniel
So great to hear!
I learned chords, barre chords and progressions but always had problems with timing on the guitar.Maybe its because i am really impatient and dont want to listen to the story about the tree that a guitar wood came from like most online guitar tutors and just want to know how to do whatever it is on the guitar.Thankfully there people like you on youtube Sean (Thats Irish for James incase people dont know). Thanks for getting my playing up to Clevel as my strumming was at the bottom of the ocean.
Haha, I love the fascination with tree stories, riveting :)
Cool video
Thanks so much!
Very helpful :)
Thanks for watching!
Best guitar tuition videos I've found. "120bpm - America's favourite tempo" made me chuckle. Is that the same as Moderate Rock, to quote Nirvana?
Haha, I think moderate rock falls anywhere between 115-125
I like when you mentioned about timing in another fields too.
"stabbing at pieces of time" is a great characterization. kudoes.
Have you ever tried using konnakol for counting? I find it very useful as the syllables are almost identical in duration. Using ta-ka-ta-mi for 16th notes and ta-ke-mi for 8th note triplets helped me out with rhythm, also changing between one and the other.
Never tried that actually, thanks for the suggestion!
Great 👍 sense of humour 😎😎
Thanks so much :)
Best INTRO!
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the suggestion. You see I can catch the beat of any song but can't really convert into rythm pattern in my guitar. Hope this will help
No problem man!
Thanks for all of the videos, they're extremely helpful!
Can you please make a video on the ideal arm/wrist/finger positions, and more importantly, pick angle and motion when strumming? I've been learning acoustic guitar for 2 months, and I'm struggling with the strumming, mainly upstrokes.
I've watched your other strumming and pick videos, and although they have helped, I can't seem to get the upstrokes good. I either miss the strings, hit only the high E, or scrape my fingers on the way up. How much should I angle the pick on the way down and up? Is the wrist motion supposed to be like turning a doorknob (twisting) or more like dragging the pick like you're sweeping the strings? Thanks again!
Great question! I might need to make another video on this but in the meantime try and focus on changing the angle of your pick slightly on the way up without actually changing your wrist movement. I'd say it's more like a handshake than a doorknob turn, maybe try focus on the pressure of your thumb more and relax it on the way up. That should make it a little easier.
John Whitworth I got better by hitting all up strokes then eventually just dududu all day
Shame you don't live in the UK ,you seem like great teacher
Thank you for your video! I don't understand why you dont have 1 million views already.
I find the 4 notes subdivision to be too difficult at 94 beats and have to slow it down to 70 75 not sure if people have the same problem? Also I used to strum with my fingers rather than a pick. But at a higher speed I find its hard to do with fingers and have to switch to a pick.
Oh lots of people have the same problem. Just find what's comfortable for you to do and keep challenging yourself. You'll get better quickly :)
Ohhh.. I want to learn how to play guitar.. Strumming.. Thank you
I'll have some more strumming vids soon!
Hey Sean, love the channel man. I see that like me, you let the other 3 fingers on your strumming hand hang down. Do you ever, or have you ever, had a problem with them hitting the guitar and making unwanted noise? I get it a lot, mostly at higher speeds. Tried to tuck them but it does not feel natural at all. Any suggestions?
Good question. I've never actually had that problem. I think my thumb and forefinger actually dig in a little further so as to keep the rest of my hand out of the way.
Sean Daniel
Thanks for the reply Sean. Looks like they kind of rest on the guitar after your downstroke. Do they touch it? It’s hard to tell from here, but if they do it doesn’t make any noise. If I do that, it sounds like I’m hitting it with a hammer. What do you mean by dig in?
Hey Sean, been watching a few of your videos for strumming etc. I have found that now I'm trying to do things properly, I'm struggling to get comfortable on the guitar as I have quite long arms. Some people say you should 'cradle' the guitar a certain way but if I do it the way they say, I'm strumming on the neck! I have a full size guitar so it's not like a 3/4 or anything!!
Could you (if you haven't already) do a video on posture and guitar position while seated, including arm position and movement for simple strumming. Cheers
I haven't done a posture one yet! Great idea!
I'll keep an eye out - I'm 6' 1 and I get really uncomfortable sometimes. Long arms too!
I wish someone would teach how to practice striking ONLY the strings needed for a given chord, especially on the upstroke, whether it's 3 strings only, 4, or 5. Depending on the chord, the downstroke has you omitting certain strings at the beginning or top of the strum, i.e. either string 6, or 5 and 6, or 4, 5, and 6. But all remaining strings are strummed down to the 1st string. If this isn't difficult enough, the upstroke is even harder. In chords that don't use all 6 strings, you must stroke the first 3, 4, or 5 strings (which means strings 1, 2, and/or 3 depending on the chord), then avoid having the pick strike strings 4, 5, and/or 6. This seems very difficult, yet no one talks about it. It's overlooked in all the many lesson videos online, yet it's a required ability to keep from including notes in chords that aren't suppose to be heard. In fact, I have yet to find even ONE lesson video that discusses this. The most I've seen is how to wrap the thumb over the 6th string to mute it, thereby allowing the player to keep stroking all 6 strings without worrying about not touching the 6 string, but this seems like a cop out. It doesn't solve the other problems of 3 and 4 string chords, and a muted note is still a faint sounding note that shouldn't be heard at all. Why doesn't anyone talk about this and how to practice it? It seems to be the most difficult aspect of strumming.
Great idea for a future video!
please do a video on this asap
got it.. now next video please spanish flemanco i guess... if i am wrong
Good suggestion!
I just started playing guitar a few days ago and try to learn my first strumming patterns. I have got a question, When I am strumming up i thought i should play the same strings from the chord, but it seems it is not the case. so what strings should i play for example if i am playing a D chord, in the down strum i will play #4 - #3 -#2 - #1 strings, so the strumming up would be #1 - #2 - #3 until #4 again, only 1 string or 2 ... what is the rule?, i am bit confused.
Well there’s no actual rule. But for some chords, you might want to try just hitting the actual notes your fretting with your hand. Being able to focus in on certain strings is the mark of good strumming!
understand.... thanks for your reply...!!!
Great lesson , It'll help pick up the speed. But do you have a lesson on the proper mechanics for fast strumming. I'd like to be able to play Peggy Sue as fast as Buddy Holly did it. That's what about 400 bpm?
Great idea for a video! I haven't made one on that yet but I'll put it on the list!
Nice lessons. Where you from, man?
Thanks Steve, born in Chicago but live in Florida :)
W H O A ! SEAN ? Some of the things you say in here ""Are Exactly Where I am At & the Things I am Doing "" west
So cool to hear!
what practice schedule should I follow when I'm practicing?
That's kind of tough to answer, it's all about your goals. Definitely try to incorporate scales, chords and arpeggios whatever you decide on.
Hi from Chile :)
Anda a una fonda wn!!! 😁
Hey hey from Florida!
1st! Dammit! Early again, where my metronome?!?!
Can't miss that downbeat!
No one likes this lesson and everyone needs it!!!
Were you rushing or dragging?!
I am not really that advanced guitar player yet, so I am randomly clicking on your videos to watch the intro jokes, hoping I could learn something out of it.
The intro jokes are pretty legendary :)
I wish someone would teach how to practice striking ONLY the strings needed for strumming a given chord, particularly on the upstroke. Depending on the chord, the downstroke has you omitting certain strings at the beginning or top of the strum, i.e. either string 6, or 5 and 6, or 4, 5, and 6. But all remaining strings are strummed down to the 1st string. Since I haven't found a video on it anywhere, I've developed my own practice method for avoiding the top X'd out strings on the way down, trying to get muscle memory for where the pick has to be inserted between strings to strum only the strings I need for that chord.
If this isn't difficult enough, the upstroke is a lot harder. In chords that don't use all 6 strings, you must stroke the first 3, 4, or 5 strings (which means strings 1, 2, and/or 3 depending on the chord), then avoid having the pick strike strings 4, 5, and/or 6. This seems very difficult, yet no one talks about it. I've practiced sweep picking style up strums with a metronome, but that's not helping cause the strings aren't being hit at the same time the way a fast strum has to happen. I have yet to find even ONE lesson video that discusses this, yet it's a required ability to keep from including notes in chords that aren't suppose to be heard. The most I've seen is how to wrap the thumb over the 6th string to mute it, thereby allowing the player to keep stroking all 6 strings without worrying about not touching the 6 string, but this seems like a cop out. It doesn't solve the other problems of 3 and 4 string chords, and a muted note is still a faint sounding note that shouldn't be heard at all, especially for recording studio work. Why doesn't anyone talk about this and how to practice it? It seems to be the most difficult aspect of strumming.
Great idea for a video. I'll try and make one soon, it does seem really impossible at first but it's just like anything, practice enough and you won't even have to think about it. In the meantime, just try and build your muscle memory by aiming for striking just 2 strings at a time, and if you get that really well, up to it 3, etc etc. Like i said though I'll make a vid soon!
Great .... normal service has definitely been resumed!!
You know it!
Hey, helpful stuff Sean, thanks... I’m constantly looking to add classic songs for Care homes. Music, especially singalongs are so good for dementia patients. Recently added a new song (blanket on the ground).. but I’m not getting the pattern right.. can you help?.. please?
I'll have to listen to it. Awesome that you're finding success with the music!
Great lesson...timing is, something im struggling with
Keep at it Chris, you'll dominate in no time!
Sean Daniel if you please pass me the pork roll egg and cheese.. if you please on a Kaiser bun.
Coming right up!
i don't know how many of these videos im going to see and i may be a bit worried that i won't get it right
You'll get it!
Mr Daniel. are there things people with small hands can't play in guitar?
Nonsense! While it can be an advantage, there's no reason you can't be an excellent player despite the size of your hands :)
mustafa hasan i
robbiebrenton thanks bro. boosted my morale
Which guitar you using ?
That's a Taylor GA3 :)
Sean Daniel okay
masha allah👍👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
Whattaaa??!? I've been playing guitar for 17 years, but I never took lessons, I taught myself. Figured maybe some basic videos on strumming might help me get better, but I am so lost right now. This video made me feel so stupid. As if I literally know NOTHING. 😭 It's like you're speaking another language!! 😭😭😭 ugh
I'm sure it was a great video for people who speak this "language". Do you have any videos you can recommend for tools like myself who play but know none of the terminology?? I can't believe I've gone this long without properly learning these basics. Have even had paying gigs lmao I feel like I'm the punchline of a really bad joke.
Hey no worries! Maybe watch this video and let me know what questions you have: ua-cam.com/video/azs0DtQtJLo/v-deo.html
a good song to learn is Zombie by The Cranberries
I have no rythmn and no strumming patterns
trepole chepole chepolet chocolate😆
:)
Oh dear I despair. so much useful stuff but too fast to take it all in.
Hit that half speed button :)
It's so much easier to do something slower and gradually just crank it up than really just try to like do something superfast . ;) Ladies....!!!
I win again
Champion!
he loooks drunk af at 0.5x speed

Thanks for watching Keith!
Are you Lionel Messi in you free time?
Man I wish!
Jesus loves you so much, no one comes to the Father except through Him, cry out to God! No one is too far for Gods hand to reach and He is not deaf to our cries but is faithful to hear them! God bless!
The worst possible video to have the visual and audio out of sync.
