Stop Picking & Strumming Like This (I'm Begging You)

- Nobody is born knowing how to properly pick and strum a guitar, it has to be learned. And, if it doesn't get learned properly, chances are you're going to develop bad habits.
One of the worst of these bad habits, is holding the forearm at the wrong angle when picking. This creates poor relative motion between the body and the pick attack and adds more tension to your hand movement. Over time, it can cause repetitive motion injuries in the hand wrist and arm.
If you're doing this - then I want you to STOP doing it - seriously.
When it comes to developing picking, there are 3 areas that need to be addressed, and I’m going to discuss them all for you in this video.
As a matter of fact, I’m going to break down each one of these areas in detail so that you'll have better results without the risk of poor performance and even injury that can often come when you play guitar with bad habits.

Blow me. It's my goddamn guitar and I'll play it however I want. If that offends your delicate artistic sensibilities, that's outstanding.
I hear ya Roger. I say something similar when I run across one that's not my style. Everyone should have his own style.
Rusty Cooley, who is a faster picker than all the guys in the first 5 minutes of this video, and faster than nearly everyone, drops his elbow way down, the way you're advising against.
Playing for 15 years. Totally self taught. No one ever told me this.
Thank you.
My biggest problem is thinking, when I play I feel good and relaxed but tension builds as I play and begin to analyze myself during play and then I start screwing up.....mind please stop lol
Yep. I always wondered why Slash was always drunk. I'm starting to understand. 😬
right right he is a hell of a guitar man. I'm usually 420
I usually just nibble on a piece of *** **** and that gets the job done.
The great jazz guitarist Joe Pass once said You cannot think and play at the same time! =)
@@bradwhitfield3980 I can say that with confidence lol
This video helped me realize what my problem with strumming was. I was too focused on it being perfect, but relaxing and trusting myself really makes me play better
Thank you! I’ve been looking for someone to talk about the right hand. This has been my sticking point even after playing for decades. Now I can lose the bad habits and know what to do instead ie RELAX no anchoring and change the pick angle. Golden
Andrew, thank you. You are consistently right on in your problem analysis and methods to improve. Balancing tension is an area I have been working on for the past 6 months.
Excellent Andrew. Thanks. I will try to put this to practice. Good tips. Thanks for your time spent on a video of this style.
Great tips here. It's great that you take the time to talk about the ergonomics of guitar playing. Thanks!
Great tips man! Helpped me a lot! Thanks!
Fantastic video! I really enjoy your straightforward approach to teaching. Thanks!!
Dude this was the most helpful Video I've seen in the whole last year! Especially the mindset part: Play relaxed, be relaxed, focus on the music not your playing (too much) Thank you
Thank you for the wider description. It is valuable!
Very informative video Andrew... Thank you
I actually developed issues myself from bad picking. Thank you for the information and being the best guitar tutor on UA-cam! I finally learned how to properly pick on my own a little while ago, but after a lot of grief.
You should know that today I finally started strumming successfully, thanks to you. Doesn’t sound like much, but as someone new, it feels like the first time you stay up on a bike. Thanks again.
This was very helpful!! I always had an issue with how bright my guitar tone was but this correct way of holding the pick solved all my problems.
tremendous. I tried everything you said and immediately i was more relaxed less tense and played more smoothly and quicker. I was bending my arm way too much but now that i have straightened it out i can instantly see the improvement. Thank you.
Thank you! The thumb curl was what i was looking for
Excellent videos .I am an absolute beginner and find your videos informative and motivating. Thanks
I never strummed like that but i actually loved it,i am going to strum like that for the rest of my life
Good tips, well explained! Thank You!!
Very informative, thank you so much
I'm self taught, playing for over 50yrs. These are some of the wisest words for self taught players on UA-cam. I was lucky in that I got to play with well schooled guitarists and learned from them. I have had strain injuries, just as you predict, probably more due to "thumb hanging" with the left hand (right handed player).
Thank you sir.
Hi sir I have the same guitar set up like yours dmarzzio pick ups but my wiring is not really as clean as your tone...can you please share any schematics if you have? Great video by the way 👍 many thanks!!!
Nice instructions, thank you. 😊
I needed this lesson. It's gonna be one of my best!! Thanks Andrew!!!
I am getting back into guitar after years of absence but I have never lost my love for it. I want to learn technique and theory this time around; I found this video to be more instructive than I thought and I appreciate the tips.
Thank you for the special video of strumming the guitar it really developed my technique
Nice Video Thank you sir for putting it together , Verry helpful, Your right Ive been anchoring my fingers on the Guitar , But Since Ive stoped Doing it , Accuracy is way better
Thanks I needed to hear this 🤘
Excellent lesson here. Thanks
Thanks 👍 no bad habits allowed!😎
The way they hold the pick and the straight hand wrist are all the same. The opening 0f the arm at the elbows is what changes. Although the more I think the harder it is for me to be clean.
I agree with you on what you were explaining about the picking,& strumming ! Also about the positioning of your elbow makes good sense, because of it putting strain on the different parts of your ligaments!! Wrists, hand ✋ , forearm, elbow ,Etc....!!! It's best to already know or or ask someone ,what's the best and or easiest way to play an instrument depending on what you. Really like to play, because a person can really like an instrument doesn't mean they can play it that well !!! Than didn't like something but could play it with hardly any effort!! I like the way you teach and also giving theory on why and reason and make it more fun to learn from you
Great tips thanks!
To add some detail to the position of picking, a lot of it is the players physical set up. IE: how tall/ small you are, are you wide or slim, thick arms or thin arms and the actual guitar you’re playing. I often wondered how some guys play the guitar hanging so low (slash, Kieth Richards) others have it high. I think, crazy as it sounds you have work backwards. From the picking suggestions you made (FYI Duane Allman used the round sides of the pick a lot) then figure out the area of contact, wrist, arm etc. I change s but depending on which guitar I play. Strats, teles, must Ibanez, a PRS are sort of the same but a LP or SG or 335 shape are all going to be different. Well that’s my 2cents. Great topic!
What do you mean that their elbows were only bent slightly? It look to be about 90 degrees, considering that one can bend their elbow about 135 degrees bending it near 90 seems quite significant. Were they doing it wrong?
Great video! thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, I think I am doing it right, but this a great video for those picking up the guitar the first time,
Fantastic lesson! I really enjoyed this and can totally promote this as a good lesson for all types of guitarists.
Thank you for the content!
love the content
Excellent video. Intermediate player here and I found a step change in my sound immediately after watching
I've noticed that when the pick is angled so as to "slice", it produces a lot of extra noise from the amp especially when playing fast scales. This is abundantly heard in Van Halen's Live Without a Net video. Any suggestions on how to eliminate that noise?
I have so many bad habits. Living in RV , not a lot of room. I always sit to play.
Great info on technique
I have had five teachers that let me play the guitar this way. Never able to play properly. Now it gets better.
Good! Very informative! ☺👍👍
Excellent advice.
in first 10 minutes of the video i learned to hold a pick and drum perfectly.i litteraly searched on youtube "why i suck at using a pick" lmao :))) .thank you very much sir
Wow best advice I’ve gotten so far and I’ve been playing for 3 years now lol … been playing way to tense with my thumb and fingers
this is helpful thanks a alot
Thanks, mr.atkinson.
That's the type of video I wish I had seen when I started playing.
Literally man, a year in, just watching this lol
If only who would have gotten to the point instead of the needless rambling.
My arm just slides down the body of the guitar, causing me to keep tension in my shoulder to support the arm. It gets pretty bad, not sure what to do.
What is that on your bridge?
Good info.... espically for beginners.
Thanks Mr. Atkinson
I watched this to see if I was doing something wrong. I don't think so, but I can't really tell because I have no idea what I look like when I play.
I hold my pick so loosely that it rotates in my fingers..no, I have never dropped it..Also I use the curved edge of the pick NOT the pointed one..Why? I have no idea but it's what I do and it works for me. Like I said, if I'm strumming, the pick rotates....kinda weird but it works for me also...lol
Thank you!
I totally agree, about hand position, and pick angle. Finding the most efficient way to move the wrist, and minimize tension, is vital. Tell that to Marty Friedman, though, haha.
Have you listened to cacophony?
Well I've been anchoring my picking hand this whole time (a few months) now I can't find my strings while hovering lol...great
Love your guitars sound. What are the bridge and neck pickups? Thanks for the video's I really get a lot out of them.
Thank you so much ❤️🌹meant a lot to me ❤️❤️❤️
Thankyou !
But... didn't John Lennon and George Harrison play like this quite often (with their arms horizontal to the strings)? I think I have noticed that it was usually on acoustic guitars. Is there a difference?
Thank you Andrew. Been looking lesson to cure my wrong picking. Wish i could donate something. 😔
I get pain in my fretting hand not my right arm. I don't always get it. I tried changing the length of my strap and it helped for a while but I still have some problems from time to time. I'm not sure if it's simply from playing too much or not.
Don’t play through the pain! If your hand starts to hurt or cramp, take a break, shake and stretch your hand gently, and analyze what you’re doing that causes that
i had one instructor who told me to hold the guitar pick with (3) fingers! Imagine you were writing with a pencil etcetera.. That may be ok for Buddy Guy but it's not for me. Now one other important thing i wish could be discussed is playing with some movement from the elbow. You can see some guitarists that play from the wrist exclusively and you can see the picking hand, " Bouncing " up and down. I found for myself that if i relax the elbow joint enough to allow the forearm to roll just a bit i can keep the wrist more quite. I have the proper arm and pick angle i just am curious what you have to say about movement at the elbow joint and wrist..?
Ah the James Hetfeild method. The 3 finger pick method was re- popularized in the 90s......so horrible.
I use the elbow move if I strum and the wrist if I pick a single string. If you want to mute the strings while playing (like blues and metal) you have to play strumming with your wrist too.
Just perfect
This lesson is gold!!. By the way, I expected jazz guitarist as examples but never expected metal guitarist (even when I love metal).
Also about the way you hold a pick etc....
Wow I really wish I watched this from the start cause now I literally cannot break the habit. I think I always do this because my brain thinks the guitar is gonna flip forward off my lap if I don’t have the body of it pressed against me, with my right arm holding it for support. It’s also probably just hard for me to try and use my wrist as an anchor instead of my elbow since our elbows are used as anchors in every day activities much more than our wrists.
Most of us really did just do it un-schooled. I think over time, the best thing is that we FORGET about the pick and just "let-it-happen". Self-consciousness will screw you up as a guitar player, golfer, bowler, skeet shooter, fighter pilot, etc. Instinctive moves become the best ones, but this lesson does address all these issues that we don't really think about after playing for a few years. I enjoyed the presentation despite the barrage of verbiage....I got the points you made, but as an ex-flight instructor I would advise trying to economize on words....too much "streaming" hinders learning. Just a thought.
The fuck
3:30 optical illusion! When you look at his picking hand, it looks like his left leg is bouncing up and down (HIS left, not yours). Maybe my eyes are just fcked, let me know if you get it to.
Great video content Andrew.
Don't read the comment section though, it's full of negative BS'ers and rookie no it all's, trying out their stand-up routines.
Marty Friedman seems to have watched this and completely disregarded everything, lmao
On a serious note though, his weird picking technique caused to him to spend his time recording "Rust in Peace" in a sling. He later developed tendonitis. I have his picking style, and it's recently caused my hand to stiffen up significantly. I'll have to reverse two years of picking technique in order to prevent further injury.
Better start doing it right early.
Thanks I struggle with Tension building up.
Iike the pick tip
Whatever works
I love how whenever I tell anyone to stop picking incorrectly, they shake it off as bad criticism
why do you love that?
@@nimbus9373 Sarcasm, my friend.
Being relaxed is huge. I've been playing professionally for years and I've noticed issues with my left arm getting tense and some guitarists elbow. I do stretches for the left arm and that helps, but what about preventing the problem altogether? Would love to see you address left hand relaxation/tension balance. Thanks, Andrew!
Swear I read about curling the thumb somewhere else but its the one thing that changes your strumming immensely.
Jeff Hanneman: *Hold my Beer*
How do you learn not to look at the fret board, when watching you play it looks like you could be blindfolded and still be able to play
Turn out the lights close your eyes and listen. Practice, practice
Simple...time. Eventually you'll get so comfortable with the neck you can use feel as a way of orientation on the neck, such as varying fret width however different guitars have different fret sizes (J, XJ, etc.) so it really comes down to getting comfortable with your guitars and is something you'll develop into a stronger suit the more you play!
The worst part is no guitarist are the same.. everyone is unique... best example is marty friedman.. how on earth that handpicking style never taught in music school?
Matt pike does that sometime to do solos..it's not wrong .
Hi
Is Morse really planting his pinky here. Or does it just look that way?
i like the GK3 mounted on your strat :-) but you didnt mention anything about it :-)
This video could have been 10 seconds long (and much more relevant) - 'Just relax'!
All decent musicians play relaxed. That is the goal. Simple.
The J C Quartet I don’t know about you but when I hear someone say “just relax” I want to strangle them, it’s more than “just” anything. His comments about listening are also valuable to thos of us without a band the balance of listening. I’m not arguing with your point just saying the rest is valuable to many. Cheers
@@phyleneamuso1051 O.K. but I never said 'just relax' was easy. It can take years. Your second sentence doesn't make sense. Ultimately, and eventually, relaxing creates 'good technique' all on its own, without always trying to copy exactly what some teacher is telling you that you should be doing.
@Rock Landers You idiot.
Literally everything I do wrong in one video. If you've ever seen Glenn Gould play piano - and no I'm not in ANY way comparing my guitar playing to his piano - that's me...scrunched up in a chair, arm pressing the guitar into my body, wrist pressing on the bridge and my pick is an extension of my finger...a wonder I can find a note at all...
MANY of the greats Anchor AT TIMES when picking leads.
It only makes sense that Steve Vai and Yngwie Malsteen have a similar style as Joe Satriani, since they both took guitar lessons from Satriani.
Malmsteen haven't learned from satch only Vai
and this is why I play the tuba
My pick often slips out of my fingers. Nothing seems to work.
Use a nylon pick with grip
Have the image on the guitar pick towards you
Flatsa Savior Sorry. I’m not sure I understand what you mean.
@@Anarcath the picture on your guitar pick should be on the same side as your thumb.
Buy a thumbpick.
What about Michael Angelo Batio?
There's a topic of my interest , because tense very fast ,specially if I need to speed the strumming,Andrew as usual great tips
But it looks so cool to play a Flying V that way.
Steve Howe wept😂
Good tutorial.
