Have you ever noticed in Shane’s lessons, he can play a few bars and we hear the song right away. This lesson tells us why , just an extraordinary sense of rhythm. So much talent no doubt but also hard work over many years . We are lucky to have him sharing his techniques and love of the instrument. It always comes through. Thxs Shane.
Thank you so much Rick - really makes my day to receive a comment like yours. I always have fun making these videos and am very glad you enjoy them. My best to you! Shane
Thank you. Would appreciate continuing to do additional strumming videos. As a retired band director I love the "walk-a-chick-en" for 16th notes. Will add that to the list 🙂
I think he's one of best online teachers I've seen, maybe the best. Justin is very good too. It shows a great drill and really demonstrates that rythmic ability can definitely be learned for those that don't have it so much naturally. Well done Shane, thankyou! a great drill. 😊
I’m a beginner lefty bought me a inexpensive acoustic guitar. I have watched many UA-cam channels and videos of lessons and lyrics and chords. By far your channel is my favorite! Thank you for inspiring me to learn how to play the guitar.
Thank you for sharing such amazing lessons. I have definitely noticed a big difference in my playing experience since following your lessons. I’m looking forward to playing my first live show. A bit nervous but I’ll have your voice reminding me of what to watch out for. Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us.
I've been looking around for a guy to teach me how to strum with a pick and you're the best I've found and I will stick with your lessons. I always played with just my hands and I am just starting to force myself to learn how to use a pic... the trouble has been holding on to it without having it fall inside the guitar hole. I decided to start learning how to hold the pick and get used to it. I like the way you taught your first lesson, I followed along and made me subscribe and give you a big thumbs up😊
Thank you so much, Shane! This really helped me fill in some gaps. I thought it would just help with strumming and you ended up helping me tweak a few other problem areas as well! Love your lessons!
Dig that lesson, such a great focus on timing. A great strumming timing exercise. I dig these exercises, it sharpens your right hand, which always suffers after a long break away from playing...
Awesome Shane! This really helped me! I had a breakthrough moment when you blended 8th with 16th pattern. I never thought I could do that. Thanks a ton, sir!
Its crazy sometimes how one little thing can nake a big difference.... Changing the angle kn the up stoke definitely helped...also im left handed and learning left handed.
Hey Shane, hope you're well my friend. Been offline for a while as we've had lots going on here this past year. Back now and have dusted the 'geetars' off and signed up on Patreon again - perfect timing with this strumming session - awesome tuition as always - walk that chicken!
Really informative and entertaining video. 😊 I play a nylon string classical and work on folk/ballad type songs. No pic, use my thumb. Works reasonably well but my strums are relatively simple; just recently began 'getting' patterns that contain up/up strums. This video is very helpful.
A big thank you Russ - you’re incredibly on top of things. Last strumming video was at a cottage. It persists as a worthy topic for sure. Hope you’re well as can be. Shane
This lesson in strumming is so valuable. I tend to hold the pic too harshly. This lesson might solve my problem. If my eighth note strumming is uneven, then I'm going to rush when I go to play a song like Wonderwall for example.
Excellent. Thanks Steven - you might as well get used to learning from right-handed players as they are the overwhelming majority. You quickly learn to do the translation. Cheers, Shane
All that strumming on the G reminded me of Pink Houses by John Cougar Mellencamp. So now I have to go work on that. Luckily I know a great UA-cam guitar teacher who has released a pair of videos, one that teaches the technique and one that lets you play along... 🙂 I just wish I could switch from the G chord to the C chord with any kind of reliability or speed. My fingers stumble all over each other in that switch. Literally have to do one finger at a time. Very frustrating. Any possibility of your making a video about chord *change* techniques? I can play any chord you show us, but it's the switching between them that often flubs me up.
Thanks for the great lesson. Trying to not overgrip the pick and finding it starts to move out of position and then I have to stop to get back to the right spot. Any suggestions on how to hold the pick loosely but not loose is altogether? I assume it's just practice and finding the right level tension?
Thanks, David very glad you enjoyed. Yes it’s all about practice for sure and I struggled with the same thing you are struggling with. The biggest thing for me was making sure to arc the right wrist on the upstroke so the pic does not collide with the strings, but merely brushes by. It’s usually the upstroke causes the pic to move. Keep at it and have fun with it! Shane.
I assume the Beat Buddy is going through an amp ? Is there any recommendation ( for us with just an unamplified acoustic) for a similar app for an iPad / phone or computer? Your videos are always clean and your repetition of steps make your lessons achievable for us “not natural musicians”. Many thanks from an elder Australian guitar player/ learner.
Thanks for that - glad you’re enjoying. The BeatBuddy is plugged into a little mixer here and the mixer goes out into two small speakers. You could also plug the BeatBuddy straight into a small amp as well. Cheers, Shane
What would you suggest you she get with a beat buddy.(what does it lay threw . Don't want to go too crazy) Home use only. Have modelling amp. Need a separate amp ? Board etc.
Ideally a small mixer. 4 or 6 channel so you have some room to expand later on. A pair of small, powered speakers to connect to mixer and you’re in business. You can plug it directly into an amp if you have to - but better in stereo through a mixer. Cheers, Shane
Hey Glen - I totally get that - but with guitar, you’re stuck in a right-handed world more often than not. Be sure you can do the conversion in real time or you might fell behind. Cheers, Shane
Hi Bill - I have the full version which I do recommend because it has MIDI and can be easily synched to a looper that also has MIDI. You can also add new sounds and patterns to the SD card. The other BeatBuddy versions are also excellent if you don’t need those functions. Cheers, Shane
I am way older than most beginners. I have just started working on strumming technique and speed. How much control is in arm vs wrist? I see strummers wrist moving a lot, mine doesn't. Can you offer any advice....
Great question indeed. It varies from person to person - but generally speaking, anchor your right arm just below your elbow on the guitar. Then strum with a combination of forearm and wrist. Hope helpful. Cheers, Shane
The51Jasmine -- don't worry too much about being "way older" than most beginners. I'm 74 and manage to get along alright. But Roy Clark wouldn't have anything to worry about! 😅 Relax, breathe, and have fun.
Question Shane: been playing for yrs...no lessons....still can't play without looking...always felt I should have started playing by being blindfolded...have you ever recommended that?
Hi Erik, great question. We should eventually be able to switch chords without looking (for the most part at least….except for big position shifts where you’re jumping multiple frets). Give it a go with some of your easiest chords. And, if you make a mistake try to keep strumming and ‘fix it on the fly’. We all need to get used to doing that. Cheers, Shane
When I was trying to learn "if I had a hammer" which strums rather quickly I started holding my pic sideways to enable me to brush over the strjngs quickly, seems like could never strum quickly with the pointed end of the pick brushing the strings, am i missing an important technique?
Have you ever noticed in Shane’s lessons, he can play a few bars and we hear the song right away. This lesson tells us why , just an extraordinary sense of rhythm. So much talent no doubt but also hard work over many years . We are lucky to have him sharing his techniques and love of the instrument. It always comes through. Thxs Shane.
Thank you so much Rick - really makes my day to receive a comment like yours. I always have fun making these videos and am very glad you enjoy them. My best to you! Shane
yes - blessed to have a great instructor
Thank you for very special drill..Sir
Thank you. Would appreciate continuing to do additional strumming videos. As a retired band director I love the
"walk-a-chick-en" for 16th notes. Will add that to the list 🙂
Fabulous - thanks for that and glad you enjoyed. More coming for sure. Best to you and keep walking the chicken! Shane
You have come perilously close to persuading me that I need a BeatBuddy. This is a great lesson. Thanks.
Thank you Kevin - hope you grab one. They’re a ton of fun. Cheers! Shane
So many little jewels in this lesson - a lot more than the title would suggest. This is so helpful to those of who are rhythm impaired. Thanks!
Thank you Frank - much appreciated! Shane
I think he's one of best online teachers I've seen, maybe the best. Justin is very good too. It shows a great drill and really demonstrates that rythmic ability can definitely be learned for those that don't have it so much naturally. Well done Shane, thankyou! a great drill. 😊
Thank you Simon - very much appreciated. Glad to have you here with us. Cheers. Shane
A great “right hand” is a gift and YOU have it. You and James James have the best strumming on the web!
Thank you Shawn - very kind of you. I enjoy James too. Cheers, Shane
Sean, great drills. You’re a great teacher. Thanks for everything you do.
Thank you Tommy - very encouraging. My best to you and thanks for being here! Shane

I’m glad you agreed that they’re important. They really do help my best to you Shane.

Dig that lesson, such a great focus on timing. A great strumming timing exercise. I dig these exercises, it sharpens your right hand, which always suffers after a long break away from playing...
Wow this really helped me! Thanks😊
Very glad - thank you! Shane
You 🎉Rhythm . This is guitar 🎸 Medicine
Awesome Shane! This really helped me! I had a breakthrough moment when you blended 8th with 16th pattern. I never thought I could do that. Thanks a ton, sir!
Great lesson, most students and learners skip basic stuff that haunts them afterwards.
Great teacher

Where is the lake 🎉mate. I enjoyed that video as well as this one. A good change up.. I hope all is well in your world Shane. 🍻 cheers mate.
A big thank you Russ - you’re incredibly on top of things. Last strumming video was at a cottage. It persists as a worthy topic for sure.
Hope you’re well as can be. Shane
Great lesson…appreciate it.
Excellent...
Thank You. Really appreciate your videos.
Could you please record a video showing the correct strumming for BE MY BABY by The Ronettes?
Thank you Bill - glad to hear you're enjoying - happy to have you here with us and thanks for the song suggestion. I'll have a listen. Cheers, Shane
This lesson in strumming is so valuable. I tend to hold the pic too harshly. This lesson might solve my problem. If my eighth note strumming is uneven, then I'm going to rush when I go to play a song like Wonderwall for example.
I know your playing a taylor brand, but can you tell me what model guitar you have? I really like it and am looking to buy a Taylor soon
Sure thing Mark - it’s an 814CE (2019). Cheers, Shane
I am left handed but watching you vids is working. 😊
Excellent. Thanks Steven - you might as well get used to learning from right-handed players as they are the overwhelming majority. You quickly learn to do the translation. Cheers, Shane
😎

@@GuitarAtWork Great, appreciate the reply!
Another great lesson as always. What model Taylor is that?
Thank you Dan - glad you enjoyed. I’m using a Taylor 814CE (2019). Cheers! Shane
@@GuitarAtWork thanks Shane. Sounds gorgeous.
Hi Shane, just got myself a beat buddy. What settings are you using in this lesson? Great channel btw.
Fabulous - the BeatBuddy is a ton of fun. Use the Blues 1 pattern at 76 bpm. Cheers, Shane
I'm gonna make a Tshirt "rhythm impared but not forever thanks to Shane and Beat Buddy", lol
I assume the Beat Buddy is going through an amp ? Is there any recommendation ( for us with just an unamplified acoustic) for a similar app for an iPad / phone or computer?

Are using a beat buddy mini 2? Is it connected to an amplifier?
Hi Paul - I’m using the full version of the BeatBuddy. You can connect to an amplifier for sure. I use a small mixer and speakers. Cheers, Shane
I guess hooked on a feeling is ooga chaka... I think you could probably practice that w/o a guitar pretty easy
Absolutely - great idea. Cheers, Shane
I can’t play with a pick, always ends up on the floor or in the sound hole 😢
Gotcha. Hard to hang onto it.
What would you suggest you she get with a beat buddy.(what does it lay threw . Don't want to go too crazy) Home use only. Have modelling amp. Need a separate amp ? Board etc.

Left likes strumming hand and fretting hand
Hey Glen - I totally get that - but with guitar, you’re stuck in a right-handed world more often than not. Be sure you can do the conversion in real time or you might fell behind. Cheers,
Shane
While strumming my pick always started to rotate in my fingers. Could you touch on how to help fix this?
Must admit that Shane is great teacher. But do you strum each individual chord with the same 8 notes or when you are strumming 16 you do the same?
Which beat buddy would you recommend ?
Hi Bill - I have the full version which I do recommend because it has MIDI and can be easily synched to a looper that also has MIDI. You can also add new sounds and patterns to the SD card. The other BeatBuddy versions are also excellent if you don’t need those functions. Cheers, Shane

Are there 1/32 notes?
Yes there are John. Cheers, Shane
Great as always except for my heart attack every time the Taylor comes within a half inch of the corner of the desk😥
Ha! You’re not the first to mention that - I’ll move over a bit next time. Cheers, Shane
Thanks for your videos. Hoping you will give us Chris Rea’s “Road to Hell”
Thanks John. Glad you’re enjoying. Great song suggestion! Shane
👌😉
Thanks Peter! Shane
