I was literally thinking about exactly this yesterday, people just say 'play with a metronome' without actually telling you how you're supposed to use it
Brandon does a good job of teaching while being condescending but funny. It's such a neat way of teaching lol. He's one of the most helpful UA-cam teachers I have found!
I mean, it's kind of obvious if you've ever heard music before. You hear the clicky thing? Click along with it
@@bobwilkinsonguitar6142 show me one song that plays perfectly to a metronome. This is about how to use a metronome practically to actually learn something musical. Ofc I can figure out how to play a scale to a click, but where do I go from there? How does that apply to real music, and how do I practice properly and effectively.
no name verified musician try not to be a condescending asshole challenge: impossible
@@kiituriito play devils advocate seems no named asshole on internet in fact has a name its bobwilkinsonguitar6142
@@kiituriibro every song plays perfectly to a metronome, you just need to know the bpm of the song. Google the bpm or use your daw to detect the bpm. Turn the metronome on and play
Playing quarters to an eighth note click is really helpful. Start around 75 bpm.
Bro you forget to yell us to just LEAVE. Now I'm stuck in this short forever
Guess this is where I die. This video will be on loop for the rest of my life.
This dude just baits the hell outta small ego players and i love it
The bro really tried to play with a horrible timing but still played some notes right onto click😂
You should still use metronome when practicing speed (that's when you may want to set the bpm to something a bit more than your comfort zone), not just when practicing timing/rhythm feel. You should probably use a metronome for almost everything you practice.
This was weirdly helpful😂, thank you!
Thanks bro your videos makes me so effective at playing guitar
I've been playing for a little less than a year now and never really knew how thank you
I wanna learn how to use it when you're playing rhythm guitar
This is the most helpful channel ive seen bcuz doesnt overlook simplicity and practicality
So many channels over complicate things n make it hard to understand
I never comment but your method is awesome and entertaining bravo for all your videos
Dude you are a genius I understand everything now ugh I wish I spent more time on theory and rhythm when I first started playing instead I just played covers
Bro lives the metronome so much he can’t play without it
This dude's awesome. He cracks me up too always cursing at us 😂😂
First two instructions: "hmm, yeah I can do that."
Last instruction: "Eh, learning rhythm can wait."
Syncopation is basically playing notes off the beat in the metronome’s case, you play the note ahead or after the ‘click’
Edit: It depends on the song/piece on whether you play the note ahead or after the click or pulse. Just wanted to make that clear.
I think I love you 😂😂😂 but I do love your approach… thanks for being the nicest guy in the world
Yah! He was honest he is the nicest guy in the world...
I'm not wt the motivation to join something like a course, however I do find my guitar once a week due to these videos. (I play different instruments)
Actually good advice on how to use a metronome if you're new to music 🤘
As a drummer, when I started to play guitar a few years ago, I found I didn’t have much trouble with keeping time and tempo and falling behind or getting ahead. The metronome was more useful as a drummer just playing in the background for when I want to “doodle” lol
God im glad i was in band and i can atleast be good at one thing at guitar
i don't like how you made this video right after i commented on how i could never figure out a metronome, but this is nice😂
Someone once told me to drop down to 80 bpm and try it there and work your way faster until you cant keep up anymore. The as fast as possible should really only be done when your plateauing to break the frustration.
The fact that you successfully played off beat with the metronome proves you’re a master musician 😂😂😂
I’ve been playing sax for 10 years and guitar for 1, it’s to the point now where I don’t need a met because the best is so engraved in my head and I’ll still use one from time to time.
But yea, if you have no music experience, having a met on pretty much every thing is important at first. Build that beat into your head and you won’t have to worry about speeding up or slowing down accidentally
Thanks mate
Ey brandon can you make a video extending the topic about how to use the metronome?? I would love that more than i love cigarrates
Thanks so much!
I've always had a very steady sense of ryhthm so I usually don't play with a metronome unless im recording. For whatever reason it almost always feels a little faster with that click going
the main problem i've had with using a metronome is playing when i hear the metronome instead of lining my playing of the notes up with the metronomes clicking. it is really simple to fix this issue, just acknowledging when you're doing it and stopping is enough to fix it
I said come on, how hard can it be, and I tried playing quarter notes at a medium speed, I was really out of rhythm! Thanks, now I have one more thing to work on
I have always treated 8th and 16th notes like quarter notes when using a metronome. Now I understand how to ACTUALLY use it
Another thing to try is setting the metronome to half the speed you want to play, and feel the clicks as a snare on 2 and 4.
Very helpful for learning improv and practicing phrasing, if you’re already using a metronome to practice then it probably should be done after you learn how to count quarter and eighth notes at least lol
Also try to reinterpret the beat, my teacher for example would tell me "imagine every beat is the 2 an 4" or you can try the 1 an 3, or maybe every beat is the upbeat, that's a really challenging one, pr maybe put the metronome in 40 bpm and try to imagine that is the 1, so your brain tries to follow with the "phantom" beats. or maybe change to 6/8 without touching the metronome, there are many interesting challenges you can try, this type of exercises will allow your mind to be more aware of the rhythm. Is a really good exercise
Thank u
I know how to use a metronome but I still stayed and watched the whole thing for some reason…
Holy shit! This is the 2nd time you didn't yell at me to leave!
Inconsiquential is my favorite 5 syllable word, thats what he said right??
Learning a song called clay and as an intermediate player playing 2 notes per click is a pain when I'm doing alternate on 3 stringsss
Song is clay by eye of the storm
Remember you have to play .09 seconds before the note comes up so it can be hit and resonate lol
u know me so well
As someone who played drums and then started learning guitar, i never understood people who didnt just understand rhythm. If i can play it in rhythm entirely depends on how well i can the notes, the rhythm is super easy once ive heard it. Guess this is just one part i cant understand.
Make it click on only the 2 and 4, if you want it to swing.
he didn’t tell me to leave so imma stay here
I'll hold you for a quarter note
Me who has played with a metronome for 3 years
I'd say I'm a pretty experienced guitarist. I've spent timing writing and recording my own music, recently I've been learning Marty Friedman solos. I have never practiced to a mtronome in my life, and I can say if I went back and actually tried it I would probably be pretty bad.
You should work with a metronome because it will give you a good foundation for your time.
Ive been playing for 25 years never once used a metronome. I regret it.
UOOOHHH TSUNDERE GUITAR HUSBANDO 😭😭😭
“Nicest guy in the world”……
I learned to use a metronome before I started kindergarten but it helped me to read better and faster. Now I average a 350 page a book a day. Also later used the metronome for a few instruments in life. Great lesson and sarcasm.
I used the metronome for a few minutes, then I forgot that I needed a cigarette.
Nice
Perfect meet, moment. T Y
God does being a band kid really help
the third exercise is a huuge leap
Omg I hated syncope. I didn't understand that at all. We learned it in school (art school), plus we have a lot of that in our folk music (Bulgarian) but it's so hard
Still a noob, but I always use a metronome. I find it odd that some people just don’t even use it.
the problem i have with metronomes is that i can't multitask listening to the clicks and focusing on what i'm playing, especially with 8th and 16th notes
😅 learning how to count half beats to play naraka
i play on the upbeat LOL
Using a metronome to learn thunderstruck and quickly learned it’s picking, not fingering that’s the biggest challenge. Up to 190 bpm but good god it’s not nearly fast enough still….
Teach us how to make harmonies pleasee
Hi
i’ve been playing flute for 5 years and i still hate syncopation so much😭
hey bro… there’s this thing called blinking… i think you should try it
I personally prefer using some software like garageband to program in drums to practice along with instead of a metronome
I hate you, but I love your knowledge .
I feel the same way about members in my family
My dad has recently started playing guitar and I keep telling him to practice with a metronome but he’s too stubborn.
Song: the Metronome, by PineGrove.
When people are confused about how to actually use the metronome they are NOT talking about clicking along on a scale. Show them how to use the metronome in a musical context by singling out a lick/riff/melody and showing them how to actually *count* that lick.
This is just an abject error in reasoning on your part.
Syncopation definition Websters :
musical timing designed to cause brain damage and mental torture.
The 8th note can be slightly off timed they're so tricky if youre playing a quick fingerstyle progression. I'm struggling with that in a song im recording
Ah yes, the “war on drugs” was so successful. Let’s pay to ratchet that up again.
I would say: Use metronome to make your own groove using metronome as a beat
Will a metronome help me with picking up say songs I'm learning outside of theory, like having used a metronome in the past make me be able to pick up the rythyms better?
(It probably does and I'm just dumb but idk maybe you could offer some wisdom)
Why do you always sound so pissed, like dude chill..
thanks and funny thing is i am a drummer
I use my foot
I can do this but trying to play actual songs with a metronome where the lengths of the notes and the rhythm change. I just cant do it.
He didn't tell us to just leave :(
So when I'm playing through a song, how should I be thinking about it then?
It feels good to be treated like you deserve
First second and a half be like ☝️🤓
💀
If you sound off (like his xample) playing quarter notes? Either you need to memorize the scale, Or you need to shot
I appreciate your humour 😂
Just play guitar and sound good. It’s literally that easy! A good drummer will play at your rhythm! And if it sounds bad always blame the bassist!
Who knows a free app for a meteonome
Now just.. leave..?
I don't know how to spell insurmountable?
☝️🤓
I hit in the clic or between the clics?
If you can't play with a metronome you can't play with feel
drummer in Nova Scotia... if your still here, need a drummer?
ps. nice X ring pal! :-)
