Let’s get ready for Shabbat! In this video I’ll be taking you through what starts as a day in my life but ends up turning into a cooking video since I was making so many new dishes as I was preparing for Shabbat. In this video we make Cholent, deli roll, and Olive dip. Thank you for coming along as I cook these dishes for Shabbat!
Mr. Firefly’s Cholent recipe
• Orthodox Jew Rosh Hash...

Deli Roll 🥖
Thaw out one sheet of puff pastry. Spread a layer of dijon mustard over one side. Add a layer or two of deli meat such as Turkey or pastrami. Roll the dough over itself into a roll. Place seam side down. Brush sweet and sour sauce on top. Bake at 350 for anoit 40 minutes. Serve room temperature or warm. Enjoy!
__________________________________________
Cholent 🍲
Chop 2 onions and sauté with some avocado or olive oil until cooked. Add onions to crock pot. Peel 4 medium potatoes and add to crock pot. Add one cup of brown rice, 2 tbsp cumin, 2 tbsp coriander, 3 tbsp paprika, and 3 tablespoons salt. Add water until everything is covered, about 12 cups. Stir. Add meat (I used boiled chuck roast, but any red meat will do. I like to wear or boil first. Flanken is a fabulous and traditional choice). Set on low overnight. Enjoy! Optional: add eggs to cook along with your Cholent. Beans or chickpeas are another great addition (soak first if using dry). Enjoy!

Olive Dip 🫒
Add one jar of olives (drained) and 1/2 cup Mayonnaise to a blender and blend well. Enjoy!

Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and we have four wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This video is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) You can see how this particular Jewish homeschool mom sets up her days, rolls with the punches, and gets it all done. Thanks for watching!

My car broke, negative in my bank account. Traveling For work and stressed to the max.
JOF videos = 20 minutes or escape from the world ❤
Oh I’m so sorry things are not going as planned!!! Sending hugs!
That is stressful!!! Praying things get worked out quickly and you can have peace in your heart! Hang in there!! ❤
"...And Calm Tea, because...calm...and tea..." Like, of course! That made me laugh...so true!
So happy you got a chuckle out of that ❤️❤️❤️
Chana! Your videos overflow with information and kindness!! Thank you very much!!!
Thank you so much Sharon! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Today is going very good❤❤❤
Glad to hear it!
💚
My pockets always do that too! 😊
I was laughing when I was editing lol I didn’t notice for so long!
This gluten free roll looks like it would fit perfectly in an aluminum loaf pan. Would that work so you could bake all at the same time?
Oh, sweet baby Firefly!! Sweet little head! ❤
Wow baby firefly has gotten Sooo big!!! 😍 😍
It seriously seems like last week I was filming the birth story!
@Jar of Fireflies I felt the same way... but then again I didn't get all of the long nights and newborn stage 😉
@@Sammysam44 😁😁😁
The food looks yummie!
Congrats on 5 years of homeschooling!🎉
Thank you!
Love love love the flowers, especially the tulips, some of my favorite flowers. I chuckled when when you said baby Firefly has a penchant for deciding where he feels best the tripod should go, seems you have a little budding assistant director of Ciematography in the house 😁🎥 🎬 The Deli rolls looked yummy, and I'm sure the Cholent was delicious. Colds can certainly go through families, I know that first hand , having worked a preschool and the kids that had older siblings in Eliem, School would come to school a bit sniffly and well it was a preschool so colds ultimately would filter down to us teachers. My first six months, I had a cold nearly every other month. My mom took me to Urgent care because I had bronchitis, and when I told the doctor I worked at a preschool, she looked at me and said , "Oh you catch everything" , all I could do was laugh because it was true.
Thank you for your lovely comment Danielle! ❤️❤️❤️
I SWEAR by crockpot liners since watching your videos. They've seriously been a game changer in our house with meal prep etc! (Plus one of us is a very strict vegetarian and it gives her peace of mind to know there's been an added level to avoid cross contamination between a batch of Pot Roast and Vegetarian Chili or Potato soup). And those Flower Arrangements were AWESOME! Congrats on 5 years of homeschooling and hang in there for the rest of the school year! :)
Thank you Linda 💜 So glad the liners are working out for you!
You got new ovens! Nice i love your kitchen colors too
Thank you 😊
I’m not of your religion but I find your faith and love so inspiring! Please keep posting , I search for your videos first thing
Thank you so much Sue!
I often make deli roll but very different. I mix tomato ketchup with mustard put on puff pastry. I then take 2-3 different types of salami usually breakfast salami, dark turkey or chicken salami and beef pastrami.layer one salami on top of each other adding a very thin layer ketchup mixture inbetween so they stick.
Thank you for sharing!
I stumbled across your website and I have been watching several of your past and present videos ; I am now subscribed to your channel. My background is my father was Jewish ( his mother from Austria /Poland/Prussia, depending on which census you look at and, I believe born in Galicia, and his father from Cahul, Romania) and my mother Native American and British. I appreciate the information you share about your family and Orthodox Jewish lifestyle. I am not orthodox but I do practice aspects of Judaism and Native American culture; surprisingly many values, customs and behaviors are the same. Anyway, thank you for sharing because you have enlightened and enriched my knowledge of Judaism.
Thank you so much Lisa! And welcome! Im so glad you are here 💐
Hi Chana! So excited to see Baby FF sitting so nicely! Such a big Boy! Glad you are feeling better. We had this in our neighborhood on Pesach. A nasty virus hitting all the neighbors and getting passed around. I want to try the Olive dip for this Shabbat. Sounds yummy! Hope everyone can rest up over Shabbat, have a fun time together.
Thank you so much Rochel! Enjoy the Olive dip and enjoy your Shavuot!
Thank you you make your you tube very interesting thank you,
Thank you for being here April!
❤Love, love, love that dress. So cute. The frill of the hem and the pretty flowers. I would wear this with my gladiator sandals. They would look perfect together. Wow, I don't know where that came from, so well good morning! LOL❤jenwhite
Aw thank you so much! It’s from April Cornell, they have such comfy quality feminine dresses! I added the lace trimmed slip underneath to complete the look :)
Hi Chana! I am using these recipes for family gatherings! I think that olive dip will be a great success and puff pastry rolls are always welcome in our house. I have a family member that only eats poultry, another only eats certain vegetables. I can customize each roll and it can all bake at the same time. I love the idea of using the sweet and sour sauce instead of an egg wash! As always a pleasure to watch and learn......
Amazing! I am so happy these recipes will be so useful to you! Enjoy them and have a great week!
I make olive dip just a tiny bit more complicated. I grind up the olives with a big hank of cilantro and a clove of garlic. Outside of the food processor, I add 2 or 3 tablespoons of mayo, just to hold it together. This is great for people who don't hate cilantro. I guess you could use parsley instead.
That sounds delicious! I love cilantro, I want to try that!
You encourage me so much in the importance and privilege of my own life as a homeschooler and SAHM. Thank you for sharing your beautiful and blessed life.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that and it is so encouraging 💜
Oh my, I love Olives and Mayo... I am going to have to try the dip. Thank you for that recipe (and all the recipes) Hope you had a lovely Shabbat.
Thank you Emma! Enjoy!
I sympathise with being sick. I’m in Australia and we’re going into winter and all sorts of bugs are going around. I’ve now had a bad cold for 2 weeks. So frustrating. I don’t like olives but I really like the idea of your dip. I will definitely give it a go. Stay well.
Enjoy and stay well 💐
That reminds me, I need to start cold brewing coffee for the summer! Yours look so good!
Thank you! I love my cold brew lol
My almost four year old daughter wants me to say: I love your videos! -Z. :D
Aw thank you! Please tell her thank you from me 💐
Thank you Chana
Thank you for being here!
Chanita! Congrats on having accomplished 5 years of amazing homeschooling. You are an awesome teacher! Baby FF is no more, a little lad sitting so upright! It's always a good time sharing times/you, Señor FF and young FFs. Happy trails.....
Thank you Maria ❤️
Look at baby sitting up. Ok , he’s not a baby, what is a not a baby but not yet a toddler called? I’m a mom and never could figure that one out. 💜✌🏻💐
School is almost out here, I don’t have grandkids, but am going to the litte guy across the streets pre-k graduation. I got him a shirt that say goodbye pre k, kindergarten here I come. Poor guy is in special ed, he is autistic but making great progress. He’s in the middle of the spectrum. His brother will be going into 5th grade, we are going out to lunch with his family after school gets out. Pre-k graduation is at 10am, we should be able to go to lunch by noon. Afterwords, we are having a swim part for their friends, they are the only house without a pool, there will be 6 adults to lifeguard, we are always keeping an eye on them. The hardest part is constantly yelling “ no running “ we put out snacks and let the kids have fun. Monday, Memorial Day it will be just us two families. Like I said we don’t have grandkids, I don’t think it will happen. I get to spoil the boys across the street. The younger one gets into a lot of things he should not, I try to keep him out of the house, we have “ do not touch” items in this house. He likes to spend time in Mr. Pete’s office, my husband is home based, but always takes a few minutes to give Dean special attention. He pulls on Mr. Pete to drag him into the garage, he is obsessed with our car, he says “white tessi” Mr. Pete’s car… lol I’m no one. He likes to have him pop the frunk and sit in it. That was a mistake my husband made once, being autistic there are things he could care less about and some things like the office and the car really turn him on.,Then all of a sudden, he remembers there are kids out in the pool. He needs swimmies and constant supervision.
love it!
Very Scottish looking Flowers ! Enjoy your Shabbat
Thank you! 😊💜
Such beautiful flowers
Thank you!
Oh Channa, I was trained as a teacher and worked for years teaching, you NEVER get on top of things if you are doing the job properly. I have a couple of recipes for you if I may be so bold? Cheese straws - puff pastry, spread with Dijon mustard, score into 'straws' so about every half inch, then cover with a finely grated strong cheese - I use parmesan but I don't think that is kosher. Bake for 15 mins, once cooled use your hand to snap them in to straws. The other is a garlic dip to dip your straws into, equal quantities on Greek style yoghurt and mayonnaise, and then add fresh crushed garlic, as much as you like. I realise this would have to be a dairy meal and my apologies if I'm giving you a recipe that can't be kosher.
I'm going to be making the garlic dip you made so I feel I should reciprocate a recipe or two.
Thank you for your kind words and for the recipe suggestions! 💜
My mouth is watering after seeing the olive salad. 🫒🫒🫒
You should make it!
Hi, good to see you. Love the crockpot dinner you where making yumm. So glad that your kids love your cooking n there dad's. Hope you had a wonderful Friday n weekend. Take care until the next video. 😅🌻

Happy Monday! So good to see you!
Happy Monday to you too Cheryl! ❤️
I tried Mr. Fireflie's recipe last Shabbat and it was super good! SO this is perfect timing. Will prob try this one soon!
Oh wow that is perfect timing! You’ll have to let me know which one you prefer 😁
Enjoy your relaxing , entertaining videos. It gives us lots of ideas to work with , as housewives. I want to add a little something to the deli roll
First of all , you can put 2 different types of meats , instead of two layers of one type of meat. Another thing is before you roll it up, put a layer of ketchup or barbecue sauce on top of the meat. That gives a mustard ketchup combo. Also once it is rolled up , cut lines thru the dough at the top level, at equal points a few inches apart. That way , once it is baked, it is easier to make clean clear slices to serve. Also it can be made in advance and frozen before it is baked. Or you can make it and freeze it. I don't think it will make it to the freezer unless you quickly hide it away. Enjoy!!!
Thank you so much for your suggestions and for your kind words 💜 I never thought of ketchup but I know barbecue sauce is delicious in deli roll :)
So lovely to see your video today , Chana. Your video is a lovely end to a very very nice holiday Monday. Feel better Firefly Family !
Thank you! 💜
Loved it ❤and learnt olive dip today
Yayyy!
Another informal log, food looks yummy, definitely going to make them. Enjoy your family time, it’s precious, children grow so quickly.❤
Thank you Lin! Enjoy the food!
I am going to try both recipes this weekend. I really love these really simple recipes with minimal chopping!
Hope you enjoyed them!!!
I love your dress
Thank you Nicky 😊
How amazing. I needed a dip for a get-together and will try your olive dip. Yum. Thanks for this video. Good to be with you again.
Enjoy! It’s definitely a favorite around here :) You can try different olives too for different flavors like kalamata!
Hi Chana! Delicious recipes! My husband makes our cholent, and he adds barley instead of rice, very much European style. I like the idea of a sweet sauce on the deli roll, and I plan to try that next time I make it. Lovely flowers, and speaking of flowers, I hope you have a beautiful Shavuot.
Be well. ❤
Thank you! I hope you have a beautiful Shavuot as well! We used to do the barley, but since barley contains gluten we started experimenting with rice and found the brown rice is a good replacement. I still get to eat it with barley sometimes at kiddush or other peoples homes :)
Your tulips were so pretty, such a beautiful lavender color! Love your videos ❤😊
Thank you Cheryl! 💜
I'm definitely going to try olive dip made my taste buds excited 😂😋😊
Our family has been sick too so I sympathize. Hope you all feel better soon! The food looks amazing! I'm going to try the Deli Roll! 😊
Thank you! Enjoy the deli roll! It’s a family fav for sure!
This looks like a wonderful dish!! .

Soo happy you essentially had so much time to relax before Shabbat came in!
Thank you!
Baby Firefly is getting too big way too fast! The deli roll is going on my list of super easy meals. The flowers are beautiful, especially the tulips. They are my absolute favorite flower! Forget the roses, give this girl tulips!!! Feel better soon and have a great week. We ended school for the most part last Thursday. ( We will be doing some bridge work from 3rd to 4th grade a few days a week all summer.) A little sad about the school year ending, as our homeschool journey is also ending (for now, at least) -life changes. Have a blessed week and wonderful Shabbat. Until next Monday!
I also love tulips! I forgot how much I love till the past few weeks lolol
Good morning Chana and Firefly kiddos ❤❤😊😊
Good morning Kristin ❤️❤️❤️

It’s very delicious:)
I always look forward to your videos. In case no one’s told you lately, you’re awesome. My teen came home from school today with a cold and fever. 😫. We shouldn’t be sick now! It’s almost summer! ❤

You're super woman! I could never be that organized! It would be a dream if I was! My cooking is more island style. Just throw stuff together and call it delicious! Haha! My cleaning is the same way. It's not perfect but it gets the job done. I admire you. You have all the patience in the world. That's so cool.

Thanks Chana. I'm making that olive dip ASAP!
Enjoy it!!!! You can try different kinds of olives for different flavors too :)
You’re such a doll Chana! Love the video love all your videos!
I make that olive dip from time to time. Yours looks delicious. I also add a little garlic and cilantro. Shabbat shalom.❣️
Forgot to say you’re cholent and the deli rolls look delicious!
Thank you so much Cheryl!
Chana, I saw you at the store several months ago (don't worry I won't say where)! This confirmed that you live near me. I didn't say hi because you were out with your children plus I'm very shy. So I can be confident when I tell you (since I know we live nearby), Central Market is a great place for gluten free items. That's where I've gotten that gluten free orzo before. They also have a brand of madeleine cookies and raspberry jam cookies that are gluten free and amazing! The brand is Natten. :) Also, I've seen those graham crakers at the big Target. :) Hope that's not too vague. lol
If it happens again please say hi! ❤️ Thanks for the gluten free tips!
I am going to try that deli roll at our next gathering of friends. I might even make an excuse to have a gathering just so I can make it! Thanks for sharing another good video.
Enjoy it Shelia! I’m sure it’ll be a hit!
Very pretty dress.
Thank you Becky!
Always enjoy your videos 😎 also when I was shopping this week I came across a gluten-free high protein wrap bread called bFree Low carb high protein Wraps it is also Kosha if you ever come to Australia ps not the nicest on their own but with fillings like salad or other not too bad thought share 😊 ps it is all vegan friendly and no dairy in the wrap also I was excited when I noticed it was Kosha 😊
So fun! Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos, thank you! My family is gluten-free and vegetarian/vegan, so if you ever have any appropriate Shabbat recipes, we would love those! Also, it would be so nice to hear your ideas for shalosh seudah.
You are so welcome and thank you! For third meal we do salads and bread and our Moroccan fish. I have a video of the fish and several salad recipes, have you seen those videos?
I’ve never seen ice cubes in a vase of flowers! Why does one put ice cubes in the water? Also, olive dip sounds like something g I would like-I’m going to give it a go!
Oh great question! It’s helps to tulips perk up and helps them last longer. Enjoy the Olive dip!
I was wondering that too (about the ice water)

So funny your head covering changed three times! Lol

I'm going to try the olive dip to go with my Challah!

I've always made deli roll with challah dough, but puff pastry sounds like a great idea and looked delicious.
Oh wow that is a fun idea! I might try that!!!
Olive dip and deli roll sound like the perfect picnic dishes for anyone Thank you.
Yes absolutely!
Oh my gosh, Chana! I want to try ALL of the dishes you made today. My husband and I go grocery shopping every Wednesday when the Vons flyer/coupons hit. I'm definitely going to do the deli roll! That looks scrumptious and the olive dip... let's just say you are ruining my diet! LOL no worries. Love the morning shots of you and Baby Firefly. Sorry you had the plague make a run through your home. Glad you're all on the mend. Have a wonderful week. Sending love and peace to you and yours. 😘💚 P.S. Did you ever tuck in your pocket?
LOL I must have eventually tucked it in but I may not have because I didn't notice till I started editing the next day LOLOL! Enjoy the recipes!!!
I love all three recipes although crocpots are hardly found here while air fryers are a hit. (hopefully the new generation will start using it since it's time-saving as well as eco-friendly).
Air fryers are definitely popular these days!
Your cold brew coffee (if that's what it is) always looks amazing. Any chance you'd walk us through how you make it?
Thank you! It’s just cold brew coffee I make from Black Rifle Coffee, and I add milk. Super simple!

Enjoy the Olive dip! Celiac is an autoimmune disease that does not go away.

You are so welcome! Changing the olives just changes the flavor a bit :) Black olives are fine! You should try kalamata, it’s delicious!
@@jaroffireflies will do
All those recipes look amazing. I totally understand why you prepared and cooked the gluten free deli roll first. This is a weird question but after the rolls are cooked how do you know which is which? Do you label what you store them in. I was watching the video and thinking how do they know the difference? I have never had someone who was gluten free for medical reasons in my life that I had to be concerned.
That stew looks delicious. I want to come and eat it. But I don’t worry, I’m kidding.
I’m not a huge olive person but I’d try that dip.
Thanks for another great video. You make me look forward to getting home on Monday’s to watch them. Good day
Thank you for your kind words Michelle! And great question. So the deli rolls are different sizes, and I also label the wrapper with gluten free on the gluten free one. When we serve them, I use a completely different style of plate and serve the gluten free one directly to my kiddo with celiac.
Channa I have never seen anyone put eggs in their stew with the shell. I would love to know the reason why. Ireland.❤️🍽
Me too! 🥚
I’m not sure the reason other than that they are delicious! They end up soaking up the flavors of the Cholent and the color. They are delicious!
By my in laws,we had white eggs ( as an egg salad) or brown eggs (cooked in the cholent). In my house, we only do brown eggs.
Congratulations on 5 yrs of homeschooling your children..The the two items you prepare looked so good. I have 2 questions. Are you able to keep your slow cooker during shabbat ? And the choulan can you substitute beef with chicken or fish.?Have a good week and a peaceful shabbat.
Slow cooker plugged in
Thank you Susan! Yes, we can keep the slow cooker plugged in on shabbat. I have seen the meat substituted with chicken, but not with fish. Chicken works great, though I have never personally made it that way , I have eaten it. Never seen it with fish.
You aren't slow potatoes Peeler, the Peelr shape thet you're using is not argonomic and make it really hard to peel. Try the other shap of peeler and u'll see the difference!
Like Always everything looks amazing and delicious!
Thank you 😊 Hope you have a wonderful Shavuot!
Thank you for the recepies I will trie them both, but like with al recepies I will do it my way. I love to cook so recepies are always an inspiration but I almost never follow them, me as non jew my first thought with the deli roll was o add some mozerella and red pesto instead of the mustard. ( sorry, now in belguim they have vegan Mozzarella so that would be an option I guess) . I am very curious how the stew looked when it was cooked. 5 years of home schooling very impressed! Very curious what you gonna do next year.
Enjoy the recipes!
Sorry if i missed this or its a silly question, but on shabbat you can crack and peel eggs, correct? The whole boiled eggs in the cholent? Cause it's breaking something.....i m sorry for the silly question 😬
Great question Lisa! Yes, I can peel and crack eggs on Shabbat :)
Your cholent seems just like my Ashkenazi cholent. I would use barley and beans. But you should show a finished one (I know you can't film on Shabbos). The audience would be surprised how much it expands! I don't have crockpot. I just put a regular pot in the oven overnight on low heat.
How do you serve the deli rolls for Shabbos lunch? Do you just eat them cold? Those look good, and I'd like to try them.
We warm up the deli roll on our hot plate :)
You have someone w celiac disease in your home? I didn’t know there was GF puff pastry! TY for making me aware 😁
Yes we have celiac in our family. Gluten free puff pastry was a fantastic find for us!
