Bear with me on a ramble. I think the most touching part about season two is watching somebody mentally as mature as a highschooler suffer through a heartbreak of catastrophic proportions and gaining a suicidal ideation and depression. That’s so hard to come out of, as who suffered through that it is a real depiction of said ideation, and how far you can fall. The end of season 2 especially that love rudy gets hits all the notes of what I personally wish would happen to me but i may never have. Trauma is a bitch and this season really defines it.
Also wanted to say another good example of trauma of season 2 was the shear fucking terror rudy has when seeing Nanahoshi was intense and absolutely heart wrenching to watch
Loved your first video on this topic, love this one too. I agree that Mushoku Tensei treats mature topics with a certain naturality without it ever feeling out of place. It is a gem.
I would say it’s more of a matter of ‘authenticity’ over ‘naturality’. It’s a very profound telling of a guy’s serious take on (re)living, in general. Without downplaying and with confidence from the author.
What is mature about moving on from a relationship by sleeping around and then marrying all of them, including the first one? From what did he move on?
@@ThatAnimeSnob firstly, thank you for the spoilers, secondly I said the topic is mature, not Rudy's approach to it. The sexual life of people is important to that person's development and impacts their other relationships and not many anime chose to approach these themes.
The relationship with Eris struck a chord with me personally. I had a relationship that played out in a way that made it a real world parallel. We met in an unfamiliar place, taught each other so much about life that we fundamentally changed each other as people, planned a future and fell in love , and competitively pushed each other to be better. Then one day we split because we were a "bad match" at the time with a loose promise to reunite later. It hit me so similarly to the way it hit this fictional character that it was uncanny. Fake smiles, over polite kindness, being dead behind the eyes, ED, and suicidal risk taking. Watching this character cope felt like looking into a black mirror fantasy version of the past 2 years of my own life. Right down to meeting an older wiser friend that big bro'd me to try and help me through it. I don't know how to explain the way watching it unfold affected me. Though I can say that watching it gave me the inspiration to take my own step forward.
This series is certainly a gem, chock full of aspects and story writing that makes a much impressive and engaging plot despite Rudeus being a very easily unlikable person, his gradual personality development, experiences in this new world, and much more makes this story about Arthur from another series quite something, they even made a very BASED character in Eris as well as Ruijerd and it just makes a neat watch
9:59 Yeah, that's what annoys me with mainstream stories the most. It's only about getting the a relationship (every romantic comedy). In most anime, the relationship never really starts (Naruto I guess). A story usually ends once they get into a relationship. Or the relationship breaks apart again (Korra S2). Or the relationship is portrayed as rather negative/annoying (Dragonball). Or the relationship just fades into background (Big Bang Theory). And when it comes to sex, it's usually not shown, or it's porn (MT hits a good middle ground there, just like Katawa Shoujo, which is a little more pornographic). And when they talk about sex in popular media, it's usually just a joke. It's never about real intimacy and trust. And they never show the consequences of sex like pregnancy and raising children. Another story, which mostly is about a positive relationship is the Haven game. I can really recommend it. It's also a story which takes place AFTER their adventure is basically over.
If your interested about the psychology behind the series i recommend a UA-camr named Psycultrist he explains in insane detail about characters' behaviors and issues. he's a real psychologists that loves to dissect characters and their issues and the origin of these issues
Mushoku Tensei reminds me of those old early 2000s Visual Novels that while deep in their dark themes, are not afraid to tackle many taboo topics like in Phantom of Inferno, Hourglass of Summer, Kana Little Sister, Yume Miru Kusuri and of course School Days. Many of these visual novels I remember playing years ago in the late 2000s early 2010s long after their Japanese releases I loved them because of how they were never afraid to tackle these dark and mature themes.
There's episodes where Rudy suffers trauma, abandonment, depression and even contemplates suicide. Then there's ones where he sees beast people marriage. Rudy: What's going on here? Them: The two fight one another and the stronger one beats up th le weaker one then they bang. Rudy: That's stupid... although my childhood with Eris is now making a lot more sense.
As I read the light novels I realise that Mushoku Tensei has something for almost anyone at any stage of life to relate to. Weather lonelyness, friendship, marriage, parenthood, bitterness, regret, dimentia, betrayal, inadequacy, self doubt, nostalgia, Mushoku Tensei covers it all.
I agree with the point on marriage. Even in Western shows and media, couples are usually perpetually stuck in a "will they, won't they" type of relationship where the couple wants to grow closer but circumstances or their own feelings keep getting in the way. In contrast Mushoku Tensei is not even half way through its story yet, and the MC is already getting married. With the format of a fictional biography, who can tell what kinds of developments this kind of relationship will bring? (Except for novel readers who already know the whole story) Edit: Someone dropped spoilers to future seasons in the replies. Don't read if anime only.

Season 2 was slower but yet so good. Still the best isekai till date. It's impressive to see real character development throughout the whole history. But man, as you said, the did it the right way. You just have to give it a chance. It's not only about erectile dysfunction, it's more about what's causing it, a mental block...and the relationship with Sylphie is the best part. Also I love how the story is not predictable at all. Like, it feels things happen and somehow the story progresses toward somewhere that you don't know what's going to be but it is still entertaining to watch and experience it. I was just remarking to a friend about how much I hate people bashing the second season part 1 as just the ED arc and not seeing the bigger picture. It is really frustrating for people to go oh now Mushoku Tensei is mature and deep with the start of part 2. It always has.
What I find more annoying is that there's always some convenient reason he gets away with being a Muten Roshi esque persona. There are few instances where people close to him get put out by his behaivor(especially the Muten Roshi esque persona) which feels like the writer was afraid or didnt know to explore the otherside rejection that kind of behavior usually gets. He just never grows out or matured instead of being a creep. MT is subpar in tackling the issue within their wordbuilding compared to other better, mature and well written isekai like Twelve Kingdoms. Twelve Kingdoms is much grounded, better take on the people transported from other world trope I dont really hate or dislikes to wish-fulfillment narrative, but it is what makes the series notable. And it uses the premise that is mostly for wish-fulfillment be i5 negative and positive way and mould it better and realistic narrative.Twelve Kingdom journey is much mature take for any isekai protagonist without delving deeply into pretension path like MT did.

The LNs have different lead character for in each books. And in anime though, the main character is used as a framing story for the books that's been adapted into short anime series. If you ever want to learn or understand why it was better than MT,and try to watch it, and you are unaware of that, the anime may seem like the key story is being sidelined by these "side" stories. While the main character is the primary protagonist of the entire series, it's not to the degree of the anime, the other characters also got more spotlight at certain part. This difference makes the official entries in the series feel more like side stories in the adaptation. Hopefully, being aware of this will make the changes in pacing less bothersome, if you happen to be one of those people who might be bothered by it when you try to watch it and read them.
You know what, I actually wanted to write a longer comment here, but it just isn't worth it. You are indeed correct. Now you need to bring the fact to mind, that there are people who have watched ALL of the currently available episodes of MT, but they still tell themselves, that it's just "a story about an incel getting transported to another world to live out his s*xual fantasies". After having seen the ED arc, mind you! With great sadness, I have to observe that a significant part of people are just wholly media-illiterate.
This whole cour is the romance central of the series. Taking Rudy from what could arguably be the lowest point of his emotional wellbeing, through his salvation at the re-falling in love with Sylvie (while recognised as another person). However, this is also the cour for the meetings of many other fundamental relationships. Not only the romance of love but the romance of youth, bros 4 life, and the cherished relationships in one’s innocence. Far out, Julie is a brought slave in name, but adopted sibling in practice as Zanoba tries to grow.
I gotta ask, why do you keep insisting MT is not a romance series? It absolutely is one, the "coming of age" part of MT tags inherently includes romance as a genre in it.
And why does he not say anything about said romance being based on grooming and polygamy, or how to get over one relationship is to start another with a girl you already were into.
The MT novels are my favorite story every told it shows the crapy moments in life make the good parts even sweeter and that if you give up on finding the good parts they'll just pass you by even though with just a few more steps you could have seen the good stuff
Differnce between it most isekai is the main character never develops a personality and life in new world. What happens is just go with the flow. This series the main character wants to not just explore this new world but be partial f physically and emotionally. Romances are not fake harem I save you bull shit. They are real depictions of relationships. All characters have distinct characteristics that build them up. Reason I hate isekai is because even though a guy is main character he usually pushed out by all female protagonists. This series females grow with our protagonist. Help him grow as an individual. Rudy does connect to his past but he trying to move on from the neet and actually become someone new. Main differnce from all isekai from this series is How much is not just adventure but epic struggle to discover who are ad who will be. This is should new phase towards all isekai. Cancel out all the harems and revenge stories and focus on work building where character don’t play around but fight to live another day.
Honestly, nowadays is kinda a great time for such topics to began. Young people choosing not to marry or have kids, gender-fluidity, queer and the rise of non-conventional companionship is something that will sway the near future. People being together, romantic or otherwise in life, need not adhere to the traditional family unit anymore. This is as much as a shift in perspective as with gay-marriage. Remember, a part of marriage is for legality needs and for easier management of family units (for the government). That being said, there are very sensible reasons for avoiding polygamy (that are not bigotry), for the times, culture and class of people. For some, monogamy and marriage is simply enjoying the convenience of the accepted standard, rather than a conscious evaluation of union.
I fully agree. This anime is incredibly mature. I grew so tired of the same unrealistic romance you see in every anime. Either the guy has a harem but won't do anything to them, or the guy is a pervert who won't get any. It's always blushing and playing off romantic feelings as a joke with no sexual tension between characters. Sexual tension is necessary for mature relationships, it's not like you need a sex scene but you need to show off the attraction and build up real relationships have.
I think the issue people have with the series is the underage relationships with the protagonist. Even though Rudeus improving, it is still shown time to time scenes of his immaturity (which is to be expected as people don't change these habits with ease) to the point he still got his underage sexual intercourses. He was still like 15 in his academy and even if there cultural differences in the story and real life but that is not enough from people from pointing it out and be disgusted. As Rudeus and as the other females love interest also grow physically and mentally this issue will be less prominent but because it is shown so much at the start it is off-putting for many.
I say those people need a reality/history check, most teens around the world have their first sexual experience in their teen years (hell I got my first sexfriend when I was 13) and this was much more common in a middle age setting like Mushoku is, specially with marriage engagements.. so many woketards trying expecting modern western-world morals into a medieval fantasy stories, smh
*major spoiler warning for the future series beware!* If the man-god really wanted Rudeus to fail and prevent the future, he should have just left Redeus impotent instead of helping him 😅

SubaHibi first came to mind. A real life changer VN right there.
Because mushoku tensei light novel(the one that the anime adapted from) started at 2012
@@ietdkvd My mistake, but I always thought of it being one of the earlier ones going back when SAO was originally a web novel.

Tbh I appreciate this story for what it did with legacy and familial bonds.
this video just described mushoku tensei (my fav anime) in the most beautiful way possible so thanks
Another amazing video on Mushoku tensei this anime truly is amazing 🤩
I agree with the point on marriage. Even in Western shows and media, couples are usually perpetually stuck in a "will they, won't they" type of relationship where the couple wants to grow closer but circumstances or their own feelings keep getting in the way. In contrast Mushoku Tensei is not even half way through its story yet, and the MC is already getting married. With the format of a fictional biography, who can tell what kinds of developments this kind of relationship will bring? (Except for novel readers who already know the whole story)
Edit: Someone dropped spoilers to future seasons in the replies. Don't read if anime only.
He is not even getting married once. He marries three times, including his first break up, so he never really got over it.

You have a good way you convey your stories that I got pretty invested in from this being your first video I watched from you (Actually part 1 was the first video but I watched your part 1 and 2 back to back)
Spot on! I dig your analysis, but I wish you made more stuff because I think your takes are as good as any out there.
Loving your content, the way you talk is awesome too
Season 2 was slower but yet so good. Still the best isekai till date. It's impressive to see real character development throughout the whole history. It takes it's time to make every special scene pay off.
And yet, when you try to sell this you have to say: this entire season is about erectile dysfunction..kinda. It's a hard sell, I know.
Not many shows can pull this off.
Twelve Kingdoms is the best isekai till date.

I recognize that the music from ff but for someone know which game it’s from I can’t think of which one
Twelve Kingdoms is much grounded, better take on the people transported from other world trope
I dont really hate or dislikes to wish-fulfillment narrative, but it is what makes the series notable.
And it uses the premise that is mostly for wish-fulfillment be i5 negative and positive way and mould it better and realistic narrative.Twelve Kingdom journey is much mature take for any isekai protagonist without delving deeply into pretension path like MT did.

Difference in light novels,12 Kingdom mc not the only protagonist.
If you fail to see Rudy's character developement and and fail to understand, why Muten Roshi's behaviour is just comic relief, whereas Rudy's is not; then I can only diagnose you with media illiteracy.

The Sara scene was tragic
Peak fiction
5:10 "This isn't actually a romace series"
Oh, it's not? ;)
Unironically a deeper and more emotionally complex story than Frieren
Cancel out all the harems and revenge stories and focus on work building where character don’t play around but fight to live another day.
ngl season 2 was bad, the ln did the whole school arc way better

stfu, you guys aren't slick. Why do you feel the need to spoilerbait like this, it's so obnoxious.
So you find it mature because he has sex with multiple women, but the woman only do it with him?
Harems are lazy writing.
I say those people need a reality/history check, most teens around the world have their first sexual experience in their teen years (hell I got my first sexfriend when I was 13) and this was much more common in a middle age setting like Mushoku is, specially with marriage engagements.. so many woketards trying expecting modern western-world morals into a medieval fantasy stories, smh
and because the story is going through his life, it has to appear at the start of it.
so a shutin gets reincarnated and actually get's a real wifu?
*major spoiler warning for the future series beware!*
If the man-god really wanted Rudeus to fail and prevent the future, he should have just left Redeus impotent instead of helping him 😅
You're forgetting Roxy, if Man God didn't interfere he would have gone to the Labyrinth city, met Roxy, and got cured that way.
