This is the 5.8GHz Sky Hammer antenna - A true high gain long range omni for your goggles or ground station. You can find it here: www.videoaerialsystems.com/pr...
I'm running 4 of these on my DJI goggles. Best I've tested yet, and that includes the Cyclops. I have Minion Pros on the air unit. Interestingly, I get less signal strength, but more quality( higher Mbit readings).
@@CAGreve1231 I'm assuming the Cyclops does better in a real "long range" test, but my flying is more penetration than distance. I'm about 500ft through a metal building and 3 or 4 large oak trees. But these do better than a Cyclops pointed in that direction.
Hey Alex, thanks so much for your contribution to the hobby and following the Toyota ethos......”Always a better way”. Would these be suitable for the new DJI Digital Air Unit? Maybe have one horizontal and the other vertical? Or....would something like the Universal Vee be more suited for long range? I’m talking about the air side of a long range quad just to make things clear.
The possibility of tossing this on a VTX and getting more range than a doubling of VTX power is certainly interesting. Combine that with possibly using a pair of them on RapidFire and it may be a real long range option that does not require the limitations of a patch antenna. Would be interesting to see an option that had an MMCX connector rather than an SMA to save a bit more weight or give options where we want to eliminate an MMCX to SMA pigtail.
I wanna learn more about antennas &;RF and found your skyhammer. I would like to understand the logic of this antenna. My normal antenna got 50 Ohms. And if i take two parallel, i've got 25 Ohm. How does this work? I think i can't use a 25 Ohm Resistor in series. Or am i wrong at this point?
How about a 400ft version, so I can mount the antenna on my quad? But being serious, what is antenna is best to pair with this for the second receiver? I'm thinking it would be nice to have a slightly lower axial ratio SkyHammer to mount horizontally so that it fills in the area above you - Or maybe a 60 degree patch pointing straight up? Possibly a Pepperbox pointed upwards / front-to-back?
You always want the highest axial ratio possible as this is the ability to rotate the signal. You might opt for lower gain in an antenna like the Mad Mushroom. However, I would probably opt for a Crosshair Xtreme since the Sky hammer has a lobe directly over top to cover above yourself.
@@CAGreve1231 Sorry I always get the meaning of axial ratio mixed up, I meant the angle / gain. Thanks for the advice, the Crosshair Xtreme looks like it would be a good fit. Maybe a product idea could be an all-in-one version for diversity receivers giving full coverage - Essentially a SkyHammer with a Crosshair Xtreme (Or a slightly lower gain version?) physically mounted on top so that the alignment remains the same, with just two SMA connectors coming out of the side for the receivers. I've noticed a few of these SkyHammers with bent cables, meaning that the two Omnis are not perfectly lined up so that could also be something to add physical support to.
Sort of... I have a new technology in the works (still working on the patent) for 2.4Ghz. Give me a little bit of time to finish it up. I don't want to release something that isn't perfect.
The antenna should always be upright with the elements "stacked" on top of each other. I would not recommend this antenna for use on a fixed wing aircraft that banks more than 20 degrees in a turn due to the flattened radiation pattern.
24" is way too long. It will pivot and swivel at the joints. That stated, I will be offering a 7" upright rigid cable based on your suggestion. Thank you ;)
There are a few people who have been using these on the DJI systems and are going 3 miles. However, I have not yet flown with anything but the Cyclops antenna on my own DJI HD system.
We had to use a wrench to tighten the right angle nut so the antenna would stay up. It kept falling down if I moved my head, so I had to be very still.
It looks great 😁👌 is it possible to have that 8 inch length for above the head for my fatsharks to stop my big head getting in the way of the signals behind . Then I would grab 😁👍
it's a somewhat directional antenna in the sense, that it is more of a reception disk, instead of a sphere and you want a near isotrotic radiator on the quad, because that thing is moving, but your head is not
This could work well on Long range quads. Since they typically don't change pitch greatly in flight this would do well for them... so long as you don't plan on doing flips down the side of a mountain 3 miles out.
@@CQCTUMP - It is in the Radiation pattern. The Minion has an inverse reverse pattern which helps with environments like flying through the woods. The Ion Pro is for maximum range in an open area.
@@CQCTUMP - You need high axial ratio on BOTH ends to minimize interference. Focusing on only one isn't going to do you any good. Antennas work together so both need to be good quality with good rotational capabilities.
@@tommcdonald6371 - Like I said: all the tools in the World won't help if you don't know how to use them. If a Split S maneuver improves your signal then you are doing 2 things wrong: 1. This is a RECEIVER antenna, NOT a transmitter antenna 2. You have it mounted incorrectly. It should be vertical like the video shows. This antenna goes 8 miles on 5.8GHz with a Minion Pro on the transmitter without issue. It has been done many times. Use it correctly and you will have far better results.
Immediate signal improvement from these. Love my Crosshair Xtreme, Skyhammer, and Shapeshifter!

Lol that intro, I was pretty excited for a mad mush with extended cable xD
We are happy to do it, but not that long. That length of cable would cause the antenna to run far out of balance and kill performance.
Same ibecrazy as powertoy?
You're a fucking legend.
What’s up Alex! Any chance you worked on the ground skip? About to pick up a sky hammer!!!

Never horizontal. Two vertical or slanted ~15-20 degrees to the side would do well, though.

Issues with null zones are a big thing here
I would love one of these in LHCP for my DJI FPV system. Maybe I should keep dreaming.
You need to put a video out for the best antenna setup for the DJI FPV system and they would sell like gold bars.
Awesome.
Lol you always remind me of those cheesy lawyer commercials every time you point at the camera.
Attorney Edgar Snyder ;)
I think I'll run two of these on the TBS Fusion, pretty much ought to be at the apex of omni reception at that point, yeah?
Just be sure you have enough battery to make it home ;)
looks legit

Lmfao awesome work!
🥃cheers🍻
That makes 2 of us ! Lmfao 🥴
For sure!
I need 2 lhcp please! Any way to get notifications when they are available?
How does this compare with a traditional CP cloverleaf omni antenna?
Are there any 'drawbacks' so to speak?
It "squishes" the radiation pattern, so while you gain horizontal coverage, you lose vertical coverage. The nulls are bigger on the sky hammer.
@@KevPV Nailed it. The axial ratio is much higher (which means better clarity) but the pattern is flatter.

White wood be nice like the new pepperbox...
Just what I wanted. I only need a couple hundred feet upwards and there's rarely any objects between me and the sky.
If there is an object between you and the sky, just step outside ;)
Any updates as to the best usage for DJI FPV with these..? I'd like to know that there is a real world gain in penetration when using them.

@@CAGreve1231 I'll let you know I just ordered 2 of them.

Maybe a follow up video with it on a rapidfire?
Why bother, it would never switch off it XD
The antenna works the same on every module, so there is no need to worry about compatibility.
Man that's a lot of explosions in this video lol
All right i will take 5, send them all already :p
P.S.: Oh man, already sold out, i'm too late...
More on the way. The guy who did the animation is the same person who is building them. His name is Zander.

It looks great 😁👌 is it possible to have that 8 inch length for above the head for my fatsharks to stop my big head getting in the way of the signals behind . Then I would grab 😁👍
Absolutely! We include an extension cable, but ideally you would use a right angle adapter on either end of the cable to get it above your head.
@@CAGreve1231 yep got one now on my tbs unify & a mini patch underneath 😁👍 tell us when you get them on the market 👍
Does this work well on say a fixed wing, flying mostly level as the vtx antenna?
Flying mostly level, yes. I do not recommend it for sport planes or stunt flying. You can use it for added range so long as you do not bank sharply.
On Rapidfire would you run this with another omni like a tbs triumph?
Possibly. I might opt for a directional antenna like a Crosshair, too.
you may be crazy. and maybe I am too, I'mgoingto order one of these for my airplane
When will you be restocking your online store
As soon as we get the dealer orders filled. Zander is just finishing up a batch of these.
I can't find these for sale in stock, where can I purchase???
Check Heli-Nation. Zander just finished a batch of 80 today, so we should have some stock tomorrow.
Can this be mounted wrong?
Yes. It needs to be vertical as I hold it in the video (not sideways like the animation)
them ethix mad mushrooms are pretty close to that 24" mad mushy lool
On my rapidfire do I run this with a other omni or patch?
You can run either. I would run a Crosshair Xtreme, honestly. I avoid patch antennas as they do not perform very well.
For reception only? Couldn't mount it on a VTX? Just curious.
Actually curious about this too. Alex? Why would it be a bad idea for a VTX?
probably just a lot hanging in the wind / might be fragile.
Yeah it's says you can on website.

It's not a very good omni if you have to mount it a couple inches away from a watermelon. Or, like, a human head.
A lot of people run ground stations for LR so it's not necessarily always going to be stuck to your head :-)
Feel free to use the included extension cable to fix that problem.
