Filmmaking With Fujifilm's Most Overlooked Camera - Another Life

- "It didn't make sense not to tell her." "Then why didn't you?" "I don't know." He swiped through another memory. "I guess some things just don't make sense."
Fujifilm remains underrated for video. I think I get why, but I also don't understand. (Paradoxical?) Regardless! For the time being, I shall continue to use what may be Fujifilm's most underrated camera - the XH1.
This one has been on hold for a minute. I had this idea when I was thinking of ways to keep doing things by myself, because I basically had no one to work with (more on this later.) Fast forward to having extra footage on the hard drive, some older shots that fit the idea just fine, and some chill music - and the result is pretty okay.
Shot entirely on a Fujifilm X-H1, with a Zhongyi Optics Mitakon Speedmaster 35mm 0.95, and a Fujinon XF 50-140 2.8.
The audio was the biggest challenge by far. I'm convinced I focus on details literally no one else notices, or cares about. But I might be wrong.
Even though I usually have to work by myself, this video had help from three amazing ladies - and I can't thank them enough. So - Thank you. Allie, Roshely, and Chloe - you are the best. I don't deserve such talent. God bless you.
Many thanks as always for watching!

Anytime I think of upgrading my xh1, I come back and watch these videos… You’ve saved me a fortune sir. 🙏🏾
Bro! This is a huge compliment. Praise God! Thank you very much for the kind words. The next thing I want to do to get better footage from the X-H1, is get an external recorder so I can record 8-bit 4:2:2. I only recently learned that internal SD recording is 4:2:0 - so this is not insignificant.
How are the pixels holding up on your camera? I've always had dead ones in mine, and I'm getting so used to where they are, I always see them now. The patch in Davinci is pretty good, but some footage with certain patterns is not conducive to a pixel fix.
@@nigelianzamora Pleasure brother, keep doing your thing. Haven’t seen any dead pixels at all on mine. Although I’m using it mostly for event photography… I’ll have to check video and get back to ya
@@TrapPhoneLoveMelodiesss Many thanks as always! God bless you, brother!
I love your videos, and always want to watch them again!!!
Really enjoyed that one, it felt brilliantly cinematic with a good balance of dialogue. For such a short clip, you encourage, and almost lead the viewer to fill in the back story. This was very cleverly written and as good as anything out of Hollywood. Bless you 🙏
Praise God! Thank you so much! You are too kind! I'm really glad you enjoyed this, and I very much appreciate you giving me feedback! I was thinking about doing a couple more videos with these characters. Thanks again, man! God bless!
Nigel your work shows me just how capable the X-H1 really is. You've inspired me to shoot my next film on it, instead of my cinema camera.
Glory to God! Bro! Thank you so much for the kind words! Let me know if you have any questions about how I use the X-H1 in my videos. It punches above it's weight, and, in my opinion, is underrated for video. I'll be interested to see what you make! What cinema camera have you been using?
@@nigelianzamora I'm very well versed with the X-H1 now, has been my workhorse camera for photography for roughly 10 months. When it comes to video tho, I typically shoot on a C200 or a RED Scarlet W depending on what I am filming (I am a film student, so mostly crappy student films haha). Mainly I have only used the X-H1 for a few travel vlogs for family instead of short films, however I'm so excited to film a serious project with it. Starting filming in a week or two once I have prepared everything.
@@setheon Bro! That's so cool! I can't wait to see what you make! What's the upcoming project?
I’m stunned by your artistic vision 😮
Praise God! Man, thank you for kind words! Thank you for checking this out. I appreciate it, bro. God bless!
👏🙌 Amazing as always. Truely inspirational.
Glory to God! Thank you so much! And thank you for taking the time to watch this! I appreciate it! If you have any filmmaking/video questions, let me know! God bless!
I was hesitating to buy a xh1 but your video showed me what this camera is capable of. This is some next level of cinematography! I look forward new great stuff from you
Praise God! Thank you so much for the kind words, and for checking this out! The X-H1 is a really great camera - capable of beautiful photos, and videos. It's definitely worth a look. Check out my latest video, Sequence, and let me know what you think! It's also entirely X-H1. Thanks again! God bless!
Congrats on uploading this piece to cyberland! Audio feeling crisp!
Praise God! Thank you! Audio is a constant struggle for me - and this one took some work! I appreciate you taking the time to let me know what you thought! Thanks again, and God bless!
Soooo good!
Praise God! Thank you! Thank you so much for watching! God bless!
this is a great piece of art Nigel! really inspirational, the ligthing, the acting and the audio is impecable, I find it very engaging as well, congratulations! Do you record everything in 4K at 8-bits and F-log format? How do you add the glow effect for example in the scene at 01:11? Which software do you use to edit? Thank you in advance for the answers, I really appreciate your work.
Praise God! Thank you so much! I was inspired by your work too - I actually started considering picking up that 18 - 50mm 2.8, because of some of your shots! Have you tried that lens for video?
So - I record video in 4k, usually 24fps, with Classic Chrome film sim most of the time. I've shot in F-log, and it looks great, but for now I just stay with the built in colors.
The only additional effect in this video is during the flashback footage, where I added a damaged film effect, and some extra vignette on the water. The glow that happens is light spilling across the lens and filters (polarizing filter, and sometimes an ND) because I don't have a matte box, or lens hood big enough. When the light source gets close to entering the frame, that look usually just happens. I found that out by accident, and liked it a lot.
I edit all the footage in Davinci Resolve, the free version, and some of the audio editing in Logic - although a lot of the audio editing features in Davinci are easier to use. Thanks again so much for checking this out! Much appreciated! God bless!
@@nigelianzamora amen! thank you, it's such an honour to inspire an artist like you. The 18-55mm is a stabilized lens that works great for photo and video, I like it's construction, even if it's a kit lens it's very solid and not the plastic lens that you can get with a Canon or Nikon kit. it's also very affordable, I bought it second hand by 200€ or so. When doing video most of the time I use only the 18-55 lens (besides that I have the XF 55-200 and a 7 Artisans 12mm f/2.8), and it works just fine. I would like to get a 35mm lens, I've seen that 7artisans has its version of the f/.0.95 that I think it's the economic alternative of your Mitakon (btw, is it also manual focus? is it sharp enough at open diaphragm?)
@@joshuaorrillo1728 The OIS in the lenses makes a huge difference - even using longer focal lengths, like with the 50-140, I've gotten stable looking footage. The Mitakon is my main lens for video, and it's really soft wide open. The edges of the image can also lose contrast depending on the light - but the look is really great, just maybe not for everything. It reminds me a lot of the look Zack Snyder gets when he uses the rehoused 50mm Canon "dream lenses." I try to shoot most footage around 2.8 or higher now - but I do love the look wide open, or just barely stopped down to eliminate that wide open look I mentioned. The Mitakon is manual focus. I think I've seen a video by GX Ace, where he talks about the 7 Artisans lens you mentioned, and it looks great! For photos, I've been wanting to pick up the XF 35 1.4 - it looks really cool.
