    I've noticed a lot of comments on here regarding the message that's behind this short film. He is right War is for the most part futile but sometimes just sometimes it is necessary. Think of it like this, If a bully who after being met with and talking things over and over still Bullys those he or she perceives as weak what options are left? Am I saying that we should fight every war every place, no. What think is summed up by Former President and Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, Dwight David Eisenhower "The hand of the aggressor is stayed (Halted or stopped) by force and force alone."

      I think I know what you're trying to get at with him, and when it comes to war you may be right. BUT STILL, the irony is that we have been taught that violenc eis never the answer etc. YET sometimes it is the only answer.
      For example the bully, they will just continue to bully as for now they have gone utterly unnaposed. Lets extrapolate this to a national level. One nation led by its rulers decides that (the rulers decide) that they want to invade a territory thats "unnocuppied" and so they send out their army. Turns out that there are many small tribes in that are who are given a choice to submit into slavery which will lead ot their death, or to be killed on the spot. So the people decide to fight. They get a general, and they organize, and lead the fight to the enemy. After a hard faught war the people have kept their right to freedom and their way of life. Without the interference of any wealthy infividuals. As this was literally just a democratic mass of individuals who understood how pressing the matter of their freedom was and how terrible the threat was.
      Such is the story of Mieszko I and his victory over the german invaders the first time around. Yet this was not to last as the church essentially put out a death sentence nad would have claled on a crusade, so he accepted the church's terms and took up christianity in his country, thereby condemning the ancient laguage and religion to destruction.

      "Peace is a thing of great value and a thing greatly desired. Our generation, bloodied by wars, most certainly deserves peace. But peace, like almost all things in this world has a price, high, but measureable. We in Poland know not the term of 'peace at all cost'. There is only one thing in the lives of men, nations and countries that is priceless. That thing is honor."
      -Foreign minister of Polish Republic, Józef Beck, in response to Hitler's speech from 28.IV.1939, 5.V.1939
      Now, if only some other countries in Europe had valued honor half as much...

      weather war is futile, it's still the most successful negotiating system. through this negotiation tactic, we can further understand our fellow man as well as ourselves. "In war, if you know both your enemy and yourself, then you need not fear a hundred battles, if you know your enemy but not yourself, then for every victory you will lose something. if you know neither your enemy nor yourself, then you shall succumb in every battle."--Sun Tzu. through war, we don't just lose ourselves, but we learn of our true nature. human cost is a negotiation for the government. war isn't pretty, but the choices in war can be beautiful. the art of war is the act of war is the act of righteous murder(if there is such a thing), while the art of war is to change the human soul. "The supreme art of war to subdue the enemy without bloodshed."--Sun Tzu. but we all know that is stuff of fairy tales and nothing more than idealistic nonsense. we live in rapture, the time before the end of times. where the only form of negotiation is to fight. money is becoming irrelevant in opposition to war as a way of *negotiation (dear lord i overuse that word). war is not futile. it is how many nations came to rise, and came to ruin. it is what fuels our society. without war, the nation of the U.S.A. wouldn't exist. the current Japan wouldn't exist if it weren't for the war of 1848 where it cast aside feudalism and was birthed into an empire. Gods country, Israel, formerly Jerusalem, wouldn't exist today without the act of war. to sum up my point, war is a necessary act that has, and will continue to form our society and thus isn't an act of futility. even the Holy Bible tells of war and how it is not an irrelevant act. as a citizen in this modern world, i have the honor to "put on the helmet of salvation, and the sword of spirit, which is god."--Ephesians, 6:13-17. it is how we should live on earth, accepting war as a necessary trade to further ourselves. that is all.

    Mixed response. First the Pros: the incredible amount of research that went into getting the aircraft and landscape accurate was obvious... even the font used for the credits was period for the era, bravo! This was a thoroughly enjoyable vid to watch, and was a nice tribute to the men of The Greatest Generation (as the WWII era was known). Now the Cons: the false equivalency of Midwest America being the same as Nazi Germany, the "There but for the grace of God go I" mentality. My uncle (long since passed... and I'm almost 60) flew on B-17s over Europe. He said it was terrifying, especially watching bombers next to him being torn out of the sky by flak bursts and Luftwaffe fighters They usually couldn't see the targets, flying above 20-30,000 feet, but they knew they were cities they were bombing, cities with schools, hospitals, etc., but also with Wehrmacht training facilities, factories churning out tanks and U-boats, Gestapo torture sites, Nazi propaganda facilities and such. And the overall mentality of our servicemen at THAT time was, "If THIS is what it takes to make that Nazi a-hole Hitler surrender... the guy CAUSING all this hate and misery for millions... then so be it." Once we discovered the true extent of the Holocaust in 1945, this mentality was even MORE justified... Gen Eisenhower even rotated American units (AND German civilians!) though the disgusting scenes of Dachau... where they found lampshades made from human flesh... to reveal to every average person the true extent of the brutal, heartless depravity of the Nazis.
    Less important was the narrator whining, "HOW was I supposed to feel, "dad"? AM I supposed to feel? WHY didn't you TELL me what it was like?" If the son and the dad were both in the same service (both pilots, or both infantry), this question might've made sense. But for a heavy bomber pilot to accuse a guy who fought in the trenches of WWI (poison gas, rats, etc.) that he "didn't tell him what it was like" really made no sense. Other than yes, you'll lose a few friends... something every kid whose ever enlisted knows before going in from all the war movies, even then.
    Finally, the co-pilot's full beard (along with the dad's goatee in the trenches of WWI) was cringe-worthy. Whoever did the impressive amount of research on the B-24 Liberator must've somehow not looked at a single photo of the brave young men FLYING those B-24s, because except for the random Clark Gable mustache, NO facial hair was ever worn (please google it yourself if you need to). I saw the name Skywalker in the credits, so I assume Disney had a say in their look, but there is a line between honoring an era and misrepresenting them. All I ask is that for me, and every other veteran, historian, and/or relative of someone who served in WWII, please show "our boys" as they really were, rather than making them look like hipster X-wing pilots. Thanks, and MTFBWY :)

      -Send help to Europe only when they recovered and are on the offensive and the war is practically won

      @@ykm205, OK, we supplied our allies during ww2 Until we entered the war. Britten and Russia was getting nearly all of it's tanks and planes (as well as some small arms) from us. This would not have been possible without American neutrality. BUT ABOUT THOSE BOMBS! My grandfather got onto a LANDING CRAFT to invade Japan and kill every last one that showed hostility to us. Japan would never, (let me say that again) NEVER surrender under conventional means. The Bushido code was in FULL SWING when we hit those cities. Most Japanese would have DIED then surrender. and I'm not talking about the men The children were indoctrinated on the same stuff to. Think a kid with a slingshot is dangerous, give him a box of grenades and tell me.Child solders are not a force you can negotiate with cuz most are either not smart enough to realize their outnumbered OR they are to traumatized to care. I'm with you on this, we Americans need to drop the hero act. We commit just as many crimes as Russia, we just lie better. But we will not be asking forgiveness for the bombs. We warned them, then we bombed them. They surrender. Russia marched into Berlin on the corpse of "Hitler's Youth" and took Germany. We are not heroes. no body are heroes. The lest we can do is be grateful to the men who learned how to become monsters so that we don't have to check under our beds at night.

      I don’t think they left any bombers decay. After the war most planes where sold as surplus for almost nothing. The fighters where the first to go as the have simpler maintenance. Bombers had to be scrapped as you need a full team to maintain them and fly them. As right now there is only one b24 liberator left that is airworthy.

      They were recycled to fuel the post war economic boom. Everybody wanted new cars and appliances and all that metal had to come from somewhere. These bombers were obsolete by the end of the war so hanging onto all of them wasn’t logical. Turning them from machines of death to machines of peace wasn’t a bad thing.

      Thats always the answer, the excuse for our actions. "Better them first than us."
      The paranoia that they will strike first or be the ones to fight first is what fuels the worst of aggression. if we must fight so be it. But justifying it so thinly is a poor excuse. Don't forget, it was we who brought war to the Japanese in the 1800s that turned them into the power that attacked us in Hawaii years later.

      well when they did bombing runs in the heart of Germany the fighters couldnt carry enough fuel to make it all the way, so they would escort the bombers half way to the target. by the way the formations are also known as box formations to maximize the usefulness of each bombers turrets.

    • @willyvereb
      @willyvereb 8 років тому +2

      Like +Anthony Nguyen said at the beginning they lacked fighters with sufficient range to escort the bombers and as you expect it was a horrible affair. Probably could've been more realistic to show the protagonist's craft shooting at enemy fighters but like others said this is just short film/cartoon so realism was secondary intent at best. Also for most of the time the bomber didn't fly alone here albeit they sure didn't have much of a proper formation, either.

      You guys don't know much about Vintage B-24s or B-17s I guess. There were B-24s that had their nose peeled off by flack and 3 engines feathered and still made it back. Flack blew holes in their Fuselage all the time like that. Plus all the crew survived. He was the pilot NOT the Co-Pilot. The Pilots Log book which is what that was stayed in the plane with the Check lists. It was not at all uncommon to have your plane blown to hell and be grounded till they got you a new one or assigned to another crew till they repaired yours. Yeah they lost guys but contrary to popular belief those bombers were just as deadly to land as they were taking off and going over the target. Lots could go wrong on the landing so the pilot had to be up to par. You didn't get hit by flak and land the plane. Flak if it hit you killed you. Shrapnel wounds were different. But Flak rounds no.
      Flak wasnt just deadly because of the main shell it was deadly because of the implosive charge that sent shrapnel into the planes and in high concentration would obliterate a planes alluminum skin to the point it would structurally fail. However many times though hammered with flak and their plane looked like hell they would make it back just fine. If he had actually been killed by shrapnel wound that plane would have been shown skid off the runway not on the Apron or Tarmac line up. Planes with too much damage were not placed in the line up they were parked and pulled out of the line up. You guys talking about Storage depots are you serious? Do you know how fuckin big a B-24 Liberator was? They didn't place them in small hangars like you see Spitfires in or on occasion small fighter planes. Very few large hangers like that existed on main bases of England.
      Those were maintenance hangars not storage depots. You dont put a damn plane in a storage depot especially not a B-24. All that aside had he been killed there would have been blood all over the glass of the cockpit and in the seat. It was symbolizing he made it home. Another thing too if you know anything about those bombers they crossed the english channel often from bases dotted across the UK. It shows him coming in low over the channel completely unscathed. He made it back and his log book would not have been in the center console neatly if he had been killed. It would have been laying in the floor with blood on the letter or it s carrier. Former Aviation Maintenance and Aviation enthusiast here mainly of WWII aircraft and Military Aircraft. Ive been studying WWII Planes since I was about 12 years old and speak to their pilots and crew all the time online. Ive done lots of research on many planes lost and many famous planes.
      Operation Tidal Wave Ive read a ton about those were Majority B-24s. The guy who made this bet you anything had a family member who flew B-24s or was an Air Crew in WWII. Because he knows his shit.

    • @Nezumis
      @Nezumis 6 років тому +3

      I think he made it because otherwise, the soldiers that would've carried him home would've checked the plane for any final possessions of his and made sure that they got passed along to his father. The items would've then been presented to his father by an honor guard at or before the pilot's funeral.

    This was a wonderful film. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't think that it's fair for everyone in the comments to jump the gun and say it was propaganda. People assume that the message is trying to display is that "America sucks for being in the war." All it's showing is what almost every soldier thinks of at some point in any war, be it the Iraq War, or World War II. I think it was a fair message. One showing that no matter what war, fighting will always tug at the strings of the hearts of those that lived through it, (especially those that took a life).
    I personally think that World War II was a war that needed to be fought. Countless things could have gone wrong if the United States did not enter. And, no I am not giving the US all the credit.
    Also, not all German soldiers were Nazis just so you know. But that is a whole other debate.

  • @claudyfocan731
    @claudyfocan731 7 років тому +19

    Sadly the US is given, so much credit for all they do, while really. In WW1 we were the ones that kept going. Even after being pushed to the edge of the sea our men kept going. They held on for 4y with their boots in the muck. Men like my great grandfather's brother. Who was a lewis machinegunner.
    Walking over the fields while hipfiring that beast. He died during a defense.
    He did some assaults over the top. Slowly walking towards the enemy. While spending drum after drum firing at enemy lines. That was considered the most riskful thing to do. Walking towards the enemy and supressing them while the rest charges forWard to run into the enemy trenches. Bcs you have to keep walking. Not rushing and taking cover.
    He died during a defense of his trench. He was in front of the first line in his pit with his lewis gun and his assistant gunner. He crawled back to drag a case of drums to the pit, to keep the gun running. But he got hit by a mortar shell.
    Dying in a 50cm deep ditch in the mud. A sad way to go.
    The fact that people like him are forgotten while they held on for years, and the US 'solved it' and 'rescued us' kinda pisses me off.
    Belgium, the Brits and the French. We were all exhausted. As were the Germans. But research showed that the german army was inches from breaking. Closere then we were. So we would have won anyway.
    The only war the US did a good job and should get it's respect is WW2. Hats off to you guys. Takes guts to walk up a beach like that. Almost as much as walking into the enemy while firing a 10kgs LMG At 500rpm. On that beach you people did what we did for 4yrs.
    But there was better equipment and medical technology. And it was easier. The problem with no man's land was the terrain. The beach was easier to cross. Yes it was heavily defended. But so,were the german defenses we faced during 1914-1918.

    I think the greatest tragedy of the Allied bombing campaign was that if they dropped 1% of the bombs they dropped on Germany on the German electrical system they could of crippled the entire German war industry. Officers in both the RAF and American Army Airforce knew this, many preached and tried to convince the top brass this, but in the end they chose a considerably deadlier more destructive course. The single Dam buster raid for example did more damage to the German war time economy than any other and it involved only a hand full of planes.. Same problem happened against the Japanese as well. A Negotiated peace with Japan could of saved millions of lives across all of Asia, and personally makes the atomic bombing raids on Japan 100% unjust, and done only for the sake of politics and that "Unconditional" surrender, which we still didn't get after... as we finally realized the Japanese would never agree to a unconditional surrender.

    • @username1660
      @username1660 8 років тому +23

      Peace with Japan wasn't an option at that time. The military was too fanatic to give up, and the civilian population was too saturated with anti-allied propaganda that they would've never willingly surrender to an allied force. The only way to subdue Japan was beating them, and that would've meant an invasion.
      I can't remember the specific numbers, but projected casualties for a land invasion of Japan were in the hundreds of thousands of Japanese and Allies both.
      Now compare that with the relatively few who died in the nuclear strikes on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Those Atomic bombs, while terrible weapons that brought so much pain and misery, ended the war and saved thousands of lives on both sides.

      Jiraiya_Ero_Sannin You can't just twist facts or completely rip them from history to fit your *historical* film. That's why it's a history movie, not a science-fiction film. This is a good representation of the pilot's experience in ww2. There is no other angle (except maybe the German point of view, or any other country) because the angle they were going for is preset in history.

    That totally sucked. It shows that you see every war through the lens of the desert wars. Totally different time and you do not understand that time or that war.

      Glitch Girl What? Wait wait wait.. are you saying World War 2 *wasn't* horrible? Because that is what this film is attempting to portray. This isn't through the lens of the "desert wars" (referring to Iraq & Afghanistan?). This is through the lens of a regular civilian turned pilot in a disastrous point in human history.

      It's not so much about the animation quality as it is about the story written behind it, and I'm not sure you paid attention to that nor understood it.

      He obviously missed the attention they paid to the interior of the Liberator. Someone must have looked at pictures at least, maybe even crawled up inside one.

      plus that could be his style choice. Each animator has their own artistic style.

      They're actually B-24 Liberator bombers but I can see how one can easily mix up b-24's and b-25's because of their similar fuselage shape.

    Wow. This very moving. At first I thought this was about the real life experiences of Sen. George McGovern, a South Dakota boy who flew his full share of missions in a B-24 and held similar views about war. The only thing that was off were the full beards on some of the air crew - a big no-no, at least in Europe. The men who flew with the mighty 8th and 15th have my deepest respect - heroes all. Perhaps the animator could make another about another real life B-24 hero - one James Stewart (yes, the actor).

      +Steve Rogers
      Of course, he seems to have survived, yet the letter still sticking somewhere in the cockpit may indicate that he didn't tell the truths to his son after all.
      As a loving father you wouldn't tell your kids these truly horrific stories without any need, would you ?
      If there was another war around the corner your son thinks about enlisting for, you wouldn't want to weaken his spirit, I guess.
      Maybe I'm over-interpreting here,, but this was my first thought watching this film.
      I hope I could answer you question,
      greetings,
      palomino

      Well he couldn't send (mail) it back states side as one of three things would of happened; one. it would of gotten censored heavily before being sent home,, two - he would of ended up in military prison for insubordination and three it would of gone to his superior and then he would of been up before the military courts!!
