A fox and a badger fight in Yellowstone - the whole story

  • A pair of foxes built a den in the northern part of Yellowstone and had 2 babies. Here is their story.
    BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT LEAVING A NASTY COMMENT PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING. This happened in Yellowstone National Park where it is illegal to get within 25 yards of a fox or a badger or interfere with them in any way. If I had interfered I would have been arrested, but before that could happen about 50 other photographers would have stopped me because both they and I know as much as we were really sad about the situation, badgers have rights too. They also have to eat, and feed their babies. That's how nature works whether we like it or not.

    This is an astonishing and honestly presented nature story; one of the best I've seen on UA-cam. Firstly, the filmmaker shows and mentions the location - next to a car park, rather than doing what many people would be tempted to do, which would be to make out that it was deep in the forest somewhere. Honesty is always best, but you'd be amazed how much of nature documentary is, at least in part, manipulated, and often downright fake. As a filmmaker I can see when it's fake, and I greatly dislike it. Secondly, she follows the family over several days and shows us their daily lives - the male hunting, the young playing and feeding etc., and gives us interesting information about foxes. At this point, I don't see too many people shedding tears over the lives of the ground squirrels. Of course, up to this point, nobody knew what was going to happen next. When the badger appears, a terrible but natural drama unfolds: the kind of thing that is probably happening all over the world, all the time, but which is rarely captured on film, at least, not as part of a whole story. Quite rightly, neither the camera operator, nor anyone else present intervened in this scenario. For one thing, they had no idea how it was going to pan out, but much more importantly, it would have been disastrous to even attempt to get involved. For a start, you, the badger and/or the foxes might get hurt, and you are likely to do more damage than good. Above all that though, is the simple fact that is was natural behaviour. There is no need to add 'human' concepts of 'cruelty' or 'unfairness' to this story - those things don't exist in nature. It is not the job of a filmmaker to go out into nature and try to prevent every bit of behaviour that the viewer might find distasteful. Imagine if every time you saw a cheetah chase on a film from Tanzania you were hoping for the filmmaker to drive their Land Rover between the Cheetahs and the Impala. It would be absurd. Nature documentaries would not exist. They would be replaced by intervention documentaries. In addition to all of that, this was filmed in a National Park, where visitors and filmmakers are quite rightly prohibited from interfering with the wildlife, so even if they had wanted to, they couldn't have. From a biological point of view, two kits and a lot of ground squirrels died, and a badger ate a lot, which might have helped it to go on and breed - who knows? It was spring, so the adult foxes would probably have had ample time to raise another family. Foxes are incredibly flexible in their breeding habits, and can adjust litter size etc., in order to respond to the level of food and habitat available. For most animals, life is a short struggle followed by a violent death. Only the fittest or the luckiest survive - that is the way of it. Finally, as for the narrator's accent, a day may come soon when the only voices we hear are AI generated and devoid of passion, but for now, let's celebrate the rich sound of all the many accents the world has to offer.

      @@JudyLehmbergEpicNature I'm very happy to hear it, and I'm also glad that I took the time to explain the real situation calmly, rather than just fly off the handle as I sometimes do!! It is clear that many people do not have a deep understanding of how the natural world works, and how humans should interact with the rest of nature. That's not surprising given the dysfunctional political and moral systems that have dominated society in recent decades. Hopefully, we can keep chipping away, treading the line between awe, entertainment, and education.

      I just love the irony in calling human “behavior” not natural at all. It’s messed up, as this, can be even worst. But for it *NOT* to be a part of nature? Nah man. We still bleed and die. Act out the same type of essential instincts and functions, being born, breeding, dying...
      If people don’t participate in interfering, that’s their choice. But don’t bullshit about how it would be “manipulated” and not natural, if they did, when we’re living beings as well, under the same rules of nature as them.

  • @ung427

    Moral of the story is twofold. Never build a den with no escape exits, imagine if there were escape exits big enough for the kits but not the badger, and also never leave your kids alone when there is a badger nearby. So the genes of a fox who will build a den with no escape routes when there is a badger nearby, and would leave her young in there and go away, will never be passed on.

    • @kyoku1982
      @kyoku1982 2 роки тому +4

      The second den was dug in haste to get away from the badger, and thus didnt have escape routes like the first den. Also I'm not sure how you expect a vixen to dig kit sized tunnels she cant fit in.

    Being aggressive doesn't mean you have few enemies, being harder to kill than a cockroach is. Even if you grab a badger by the neck, it can swivel it's head and bite you. Only a starving lion or bear would mess with those bastards.

    Hi Judy! Just found your channel with this video recommendation. I thought this presentation was very well done, and I appreciate the hours, days, and months it took to present your story.
    But in reading some of the comments, some folks can be butt-wipes, plain and simple. Big tough people when they can hide behind the screen, but butt-wipes in person. So toss them off to the side, and enjoy the appreciative comments of those who understand your journey, and are grateful for sharing it with us. Thank you very much!
    PS: I figured the vixen would have ripped that badger up one side and down the other, but I truly had no idea how vicious a badger could be; heavy sigh.

    I used to have badgers around my house and my Rottweiler finally got hold of one about 2 months ago. I went downstairs and found a badgers head lodged in my sofa. I immediately called my rottie and she came back with the other half of the badger; there’s been no badgers around my house ever since 😂
