      Mine too. I'm 57, but my grandpa bought this and a 1980 Les Paul standard for me when I was in high school. It was a decent first amp, but always got drowned out by the larger amps and drum sets of my friends jamming in basements.

    I have an awesome, old Peavey Bandit, with a nice Celestion speaker that I got back in 1989. Solid state, yet has a strangely warm sound. Cool video, full info useful info. So many musicians I know think they can only "the best" and made in America, etc., yet looking at many of the greats out there, they use whatever junk they like basically.

    The truth is a lot of solid state amps sound good but had cheaper speakers. A lot of the "tube" sound was actually the speaker that had a good EQ curve that rounded off the highs without getting too muffled, same as having a good filter on a synth.

      Truth 💯!! I’m a firm believer in the speaker making or breaking a rig.

      So true. I put a vintage coffee can alnico ElectoVoice SRO in my Peavey special 150 solo series amp. Other "legendary" speakers couldn't handle the power for long, some sounded good, some didn't. The SRO really brought that amp alive, and I immediately noticed an increase in sensitivity on the volume knobs and quite abit more volume output and clarity, and a more "musical" sounding speaker in general. I think it's a more efficient design and its frame that does it. Whatever it is, it made that combo GREATer!

      The speaker is a big part of the sound of any amp, but you should read the articles Hartley Peavey wrote about designing amps. He says the transformers are a huge part of the sound of a tube amp.

    I've owned 2 Studio Pro 50's in the past. The first one I owned I replaced the stock speaker with a Carvin BR12 (Celestion type clone) and it sounded great! That was my workhorse rig for several years until I quit gigging. Some years later a friend got me into another gig situation and the little practice amp I owned wouldn't cut it. Picked up another Studio Pro 50 and again swapped in the BR12 speaker. I pushed it hard to be heard over a very loud keyboard player, but she did the job and never failed me. Loved those amps. lightweight but powerful.

All new wiring, pots, seymour duncan jb and 59 combo and had a kohler trem installed back in 1989. New fret job in 2015. Built like a tank. Maple neck and body. Love any old peavey products. Still have my mint condition 1991 peavey special 112 i got new in 1991. Went through a couple peavey amps through the years until i got it. Went bigger each trade up...lol. nice to see old peaveys being used. 🤟🤟✌🥂

    Peavey's are great sounding little amps that do not get as much respect as they deserve, I don't know many guitar players that didn't learn on one. (you always leave them because they are limited in what they can do compared to a real tube amp....and I am talking their small backstage series solid state type amps not the 6505's they later came up with...ohhh yeah and for you kids I am talking about learning guitar in the 70's and 80's pre line 6....when all there was really in the US was peavey solid state to learn on)....but they did always sound great....kinda a Fender Roc vibe.

      Definitely. I learned in the 90’s on a teal stripe bandit. I’ve pretty much dwindled down my amp collection to 5 watt tube amps for smaller rooms and bandits for when I need to get loud.

      @@Chucksguitargeekery I would credit my personal addiction to Mesa Boogie amps as coming from my experience with a Peavey when beginning(Peavey adopted the two stage gain approach with the pre and post gain which is a hallmark of the Mark series and frankly I think that the evolution in tone from a Fenderish sounding peavey to a mark series as the natural progression of the same-ish tone (more so than I get from Marshall, of which I do own a TSL100 but prefer my Mark V)

    Got a Peavey Studio Pro 40 at a pawn shop about 10 years ago for around $70, and I tried it it there and was happy enough. Boy, got it home (just a home guitarist myself), and WOW! Loved not just the knobs (push in/pull outs), but the VOLUME. I have yet to put everything at 11. Also HEAVY to carry but not too much.
    Is it me, or is Marshall Co. just a spoiled McDonald's-endorsement-type-for-celebs. Rock and Roll definitely has a "Brand" look that leans toward Big Corp. Names and sticking a Brand name on whatever because they paid BOO KOO bucks to lease the name.

    I have a Made in the USA Peavey Studio Pro 112 “Trans-Tube” that was made sometime in the mid-90s. I bought it at Guitar Center I THINK in ‘97 ??? It’s a “silver stripe” version with the Blue Marvel speaker. I’m not a big fan of the speaker itself but I bought it because I was shocked at how good the amp sounded for a solid state.Whatever the “Trans-Tube” circuitry consists of, it’s pretty impressive. It truly does sound A LOT like a tube amp. When you crank it up it has a very Marshall-like tone. It does alright by itself but I really like it with just some slight gain and then using my PlimSoul pedal in front mixed in with it. Sounds pretty damn amazing. You can not beat these amps for the price. They’re great quality, sound good and made in the U.S. if you get one from the late 90s backward. The pots tend to get very scratch with age but nothing some contact cleaner spray won’t fix.

    The Studio Pro is a really cool amp. Kinda the little brother to the Bandit (with the Special 130 being the bigger brother). The EDI line out is a really handy and useful feature. Peavey was waaaay ahead of the competition with that onboard feature and in their EDI box in the early 80s. Outside of this, most everyone had to get a custom made sim box to do the same thing at the time. Later into the 80s and 90s there came the Palmer PDI03, ADA MicroCab , RedBox, etc... Granted, these didn't sound great, kinda compressed and nasal, but they did sound way better than direct with creative HPF and LPF EQ.

  • @dinmentor

    Have to point some things out.
    According to the manual the line-out is compensated to sound like a speaker. The line out = the preamp with speaker sim at line level.
    Also, there is no guarantee that a solid state amp will function well, especially over time, with no load, ask a amp tech who really knows electronics.

      @@Chucksguitargeekery Gotcha. Ya know people are going apeshit over the “Decade” model, but the differences in these small solid estate Peavey amps from the late 70s to the mid to late 80s is really minimal. It comes down the the stock speaker, eq, reverb. I do prefer the distortion on the mid to late 80s models that have the smaller conical knobs instead of the cylindrical knobs that came earlier. I have a bandit 112 which is a little heavy to lug all over. But I want to pick up a backstage or studio pro. They really are versatile and the crappy little rage can be made really great by swapping in a $25 used Jensen Mod speaker. And I say used because it will probably already be broken in.

    4:26 - Why shouldn't you never pull off the speaker wires on a tube amp ??? What if I wanted to replace the speaker with a better one? I'd have to disconnect the old one to put the new one in. Please let me know, thanks.

    • @Chucksguitargeekery
      @Chucksguitargeekery  11 місяців тому +1

      To clarify, you should never disconnect a speaker with the tube amp turned on. You can swap speakers, just make sure the amp is off while you’re doing it, and make sure the new speaker is completely connected before turning it back on. I go an extra step and unplug a tube amp just to make double sure. You can run solid state without a speaker connected though.

I also replace noisy fans on those amps that came with them. Basically they are built well but with cheap components, upgrade once and rock on for another 20+ years. I can’t say that about Fender, Crate or the rest of the made in USA solid state amps. Japanese Fenders are good, hmmm ? Yeah in USA it’s maximum profit and sales gimmicks but Peavey is fairly solid. No it’s not the best out there but if you can’t get a good sound out of one then maybe it’s the player?

      Sorry, I keep thinking of more points after each comment lol. It gets tricky because I think most amps starting in the late 90’s switched from Line-outs to Headphone-outs, which is a different beast. Headphone outs usually have some sort of cab-sim and is a much more powerful output. That’s why I emphasized this is usually a feature in older amps to have a post-power amp line out.

    • @anthonyrexhouse5858
      @anthonyrexhouse5858 9 місяців тому

      No, I appreciate all your help. I really like the idea of the balanced and the unbalanced lineouts. But that seems like a rarity and maybe even a feature that is only on that particular amp. Obviously that gives it more versatility having both but, it sounds like what you are saying is that, for this video you just used the unbalanced line out - the quarter inch line out? If something like that would work, then maybe I would pick up another older amp that has that. But I also noticed that you are particular app has a effects Loop. So, it seems to me that that amp has a lot of really good features

    • @anthonyrexhouse5858
      @anthonyrexhouse5858 9 місяців тому

      And just like you, I am thinking of more points after I post a reply. You mentioned that there are adapters to go from unbalanced to balanced, correct? If that is so then perhaps the amp would not need to have both, but would work with the unbalanced line out only, that could be converted to a balanced XLR via an adapter?
