The studio pro 40 is seriously one of the greatest amplifiers ever created… a lot of tube amps can’t even get half way to the level of badassness the studio pro 40 is on. That’s before you get curious and plus that bright knob… that’s when the mullet comes out and the party starts
The footswitch turns the Saturation off or on, so effectively it can be like a 2 channel amp. It’s the only Peavey from that era I know of that does this.
I am a Fender tube amp guy but on occasion I carry a Peavey Pacer 100 as a backup. Back in the day I got tired of lugging an old Fender Twin Reverb every night. I bought a Bandit which served my purpose very well. Nothing at all wrong with a Peavey product.
Picked up a 1983 Studio Pro 40 at auction last year for $30 USD. One of my better amp buys. Never played a Bandit, but judging from this comparison, I am good with my '83 SP 40. Thank you!
A few years ago I bought a second hand Studio Pro 40 for a mere £15 from a rehearsal studio in Brighton. One of the best transistor amps around in my opinion, the Saturation circuit is awesome and it’s super loud for its smallish size! Thanks for giving it the respect it deserves, Johan! 👍
The early Studio Pro (18 watts RMS) is the one I’m working on lately. It’s very reminiscent of the original Backstage 30, only with a 12” speaker, reverb and Saturation. It’s light and nimble, and plenty loud. I installed a speaker output jack and play it thru a twin 15” Eminence (1974) Peavey cabinet, and sometimes a 4x12 Milton-Keynes made Marshall. It’ll blow you away at its versatility. Great old amps and I payed $70 US for mine. 😳 Merry Christmas y’all!
My first amp was a Studio Pro 50. Had a good clean sound, but the distortion channel wasn't the best. Luckily, it took pedals very well. Traded it to a buddy about 20 years ago for a Randall 40-watt bass combo. Both amps are still going strong.
I sometimes forget how much I like those old Sunn/Fender Eminence square-magnet speakers. It would be very interesting to hear how the Bandit performs with an old Eminence... Nicely executed, as always!
I bough m'y first Peavey bandit because m'y friends have Peavey bandit 65 ibought A Peavey bandit 75 and Peavey backtage plus 35w and Peavey rage and liste go on!
They both sound great! I think the Bandit has a lot more crunch the Pro 40 sounds like the mids were turned down making it sound more compressed, cleaner, and heaver! I had a few Peavey amps when I started playing 30+ yrs. ago, I forgot what they even sounded like until hearing your videos... I wish I still had them now!! Thanks again for the great reviews my friend......... Mike(Whitey).
Just got a Studio Pro 40 for 20usd locally. Not sure what year it is but it has a round magnet speaker supposedly made by Eminence according to forums. It also has the trs unbalanced out instead of xlr like other models. Sounds great! Happy to have picked it up, searched for Crate amps for shitz and it popped up on fb marketplace. Cleaned all the pots with deoxit even tho only one had crackle at max.
Gotta say that I like the sound of the Studio Pro 40 but the Bandit comes out ahead in terms of overdriven sounds. The studio pro starts getting a little too fuzz like which makes it sound a little farty. The bandit stays very transparent.
Johan someday please demonstrate the orange A.D. 30. Maybe compare it against a tube rectified vox AC 30.I know you have compared it versus other orange amplifiers. But I think it deserves a separate treatment. I’d love to hear you go off and one and really give it an exhaustive review. I don’t know what you think of tube rectifiers but I always find that they give an extra dimension to tone versus solid-state rectifiers. Your channel is my absolute favorite.
Thanks man, we can definitely do that. I really Tube rectifiers för clean tones, to get a nice and natural compression.Im really glad you like the channel!
Johan Segeborn Please please please. :) do you agree that a tube rectifier is like a dynamic variac? I think there is an Infinity of tone with every attack and decay. Because the power tubes see a nice smooth reduction and then increase in plate voltage, and, plate voltage is what tells a lot of amplifiers apart tonally. People use variacs to change the tone on solid rectified amps... but statically… Whereas a tube rectifier is dynamic and has a “wider infinity” of voltages. :) I have used two different tube rectifiers in some black face Fender amps to get totally different tonal responses. The ad30 is the only tube rectified Orange. It deserves your attention. :)
Hi Johan i know this video is old so i dont know if you will see this, but i have a Peavey teal stripe bandit eith the original scorpion speaker and wanted to know your thoughts on the scorpions as far as how they measure up to your favourite greenbacks,i ask cause i was pondering whether to keep the scorpion in there or to buy a more popular replacement speaker, thank hou for your content you have a natural talent in your fingers with the guitar Johan
Johan at this point you'll have played every amp in my Peavey collection hahaha. Soon I'll see a Bravo and Encore (fitting names) before you know it. I ran a Swamp Thang Eminence through my Studio Pro 40 identical to that one for a while. Thinking Texas Heat for it next. I found it hard to get a usable tone until I played with the speakers. But its definitely got some solid state peavey magic reminiscent to the VT series Maces.
I really hate the Scorpion Speakers in these I have hemp speakers in my 2 main amps and eminence regulars in the other ..i think I will put a Vintage 30 in one to try it !!!
Just recently noticing your reply sir. And I thought I'd say on my Studio Pro I ended up using this old celestion Marshall Valvestate cab speaker in place of what it had. I gotta say, I found something that amp likes. Not as hard to get tones out of it now. Maybe it just needed Celestion spices haha. I find it very odd the Pacer has an external speaker jack yet the studio pro doesn't. Considering modding mine.
Hello, I'm going to record a video about Studio 40 and I want to ask you if it is possible to put your video? Can i embed your videos in my Studio 40 review? link to you I am leaving in my review.have a nice day!
Love the warmth of the bandit as well as how it would fit well in a mix/live setting. Studio amp would work well for a solo recording or a soloist as itll take some eqing to get that guitar to sit right
Have you checked if your Bandit speaker has dust or foam goo in the voice coil gap? It’s missing all the high end... The magnet comes off, then you can clean it. cheers!
Id been wanting this particular model Bandit for a long time and finally got one recently the Scorpio sound really great but I came across a celestion creamback for only a hundred bucks and put that in there. It sounds a little better than the Scorpion speaker. But the Scorpion still rocks.
Such great sound that I've been hunting a Studio Pro a few months until I found one today. Are the settings used in video the same as is shown in video? Perhaps hard to remember now though..
Even though the Bandit is darker sounding, I much prefer the juicier richer overtones and less solid-state distortion "grit" compared to what I hear on the Studio Pro. Also note that if Johan had center-miced the Bandit, he would have captured a bit more high end. To me the Bandit simply sounds more like a tube amp. I just don't like the way the distortion breaks up on the Studio pro as it just sounds harsh and a bit mushy although on a few parts Johan coaxed some delicious overtones from that amp that showed that in capable hands (like Johan"s) it could still be usable for classic rock.
Thanks man! Yeah the bigger dustcap of the scorpion makes it harder to find identical mic positions for both amps. I went with ‘where the dustcap meets the cone’ my usual spot :-) Cheers Johan
Studio 40 for me! Would be interesting to test hook them parallel to make a sort of stereo sound? ( or 2 Marshalls.or Vox Ac 30 or twin reverbs..so much possible..) I love I bit delay and bouncing stereo..got infected because of Blackstar stuff
I also have a Peavey Encore 65, 2-Special 130's and just got another Studio Pro 40 and a combo MX tube amp ....I had one of these but someone stole it out of our rehearsal space !
So I have a total of 7 Studio Pro 40's .....1 at home, 3 at my storage unit, 1 head convert, 1 combo at the shop and my son has one ! ....and everytime I play them I can get what I need !
Deuce is 120 Watt, Mace 160 Watt. Both extremely loud :-) Can't wait for that video Johan!! Really appreciate to see you're doing a Peavey history tour!
I saved my Peavey Backstage Plus from a guy who had it stored for 40years nearly. Never played and like brand new. Super kool!! Has an effects loop, headphone jack and a remote footswitch jack for reverb on/off (really small spring reverb) it’s great!!! Peavey for life!!! 🫶🎸🤛👍🙏🔥🙏🇨🇦🔥🔥👍🤘🤘🎸🎸👍🤘
Curious if you've tried the current Randall RG80 combo, or if you'd consider demoing one. It's touted as a metal amp, but if anyone could blues it up, it's Johan.
Are there any killer Swedish bands that you would recommend from the 70s? I find it so striking that the English ruled the scene then. How was it that Germany and Sweden and other places didn’t get in on the action so far?
Hi, Johan! Actualy I told you about my "love" to Bandits, but Solo 40 is much more stronger and crunchy. Solo is the winner in that duel. Nothing to say more. Ultimate amp for distortion and for soloes. SOLO!:-)) Have a great weekend! And play with passion, like said my friend Jake Smith from Detroit (I guess, you know him too). Zigfrid
What the f***k ? Is that really the drive channel on these amps straight in, without any distortion/overdrive pedals ? Damn, that sounds exactly like i want it to. Played on that generation Bandit and Deuce amps, it seems Peavey hit a home run with that series!
Love the Studio, holy crap it sounds good! I own a Bandit 65, sadly its down at the moment. I have some kind of issue in the preamp area, I miss not being able to play it. I might just have to find me one of these Studios!
Greetings from the U.S.., Washington state. Pro 40 all the way. Not sure why the Bandit sounded so flat? I recently picked up a 1978 carvin vtr 2800 50watt 112. So you ever review these amps? What speaker would you recommend? Not really find of the celestion G12T 75 in there now. Thank you in advance and thank you for your dedication to educate us all.
Johan Segeborn Thank you for the suggestion, I will look At those speakers. Someone local is selling 4 carvin black label Pro series Gt12's for 100 dollars I was thinking on buying these and building 2 2x12 cabs for my son and I. I found a carvin xt112 for him a few months ago.
I saw an amp called mezzabarba on youtube and the guy said that it was the best amp.. i can't tell the difference from other good amps. But that said amp is very expensive. If there would be any possibility, can you do a demo for mezzabarba? Thanks
It's strange that you are now posting all these demos of Peavey amps, because the only Peavey dealer in town here just recently closed his doors. I did a walk through of the closed shop before he put up a bulk sale. Maybe one day in the not so distant future Peaveys will come back into demand.
Hi Johan great great video as always, i just recently watched your video on the MusicMan RD112 50 , how does the Peavey Bandit stack up to the MusicMan, just curious, i know you are seriously busy but wanted to ask, Peace and keep rockin' great stuff !
I buy everyone of these I can turn my friends on to them !!! ...I am almost over tube amps ..these have totally won me over ...the Bandit sounds too muddy ...the Studio Pro 40 is the secret weapon !!!
I play this Bandit through a vintage Marshall Cab here ua-cam.com/video/QS17p9XOCMA/v-deo.html Whether you put a JTM+Guvnor+R9 or a Bandit+Epiphone through that cab it will sound basically like that.
I wish Peavey would reissue the Studio Pro 40 made like these were, not the Chinese versions ...which to my ears sound terrible. The only thing I would want would be a 80 or 100 watt speaker ....maybe a Neo speaker of some kind .....to get close to a tube sound in a small not over powering amp ...that is virtually maintenance free would sell !!! I use two of these on my gigs with the Local Legends and Dixie Tornados ...one is set for a tele or strat and the other one for Humbucker guitars and AB box, a tuner, delay, chorus, and trem and an antique Rat pedal ...it is all I need ! ..
.Back in the day, everyone that fooled with an electric guitar, had a Peavey...One guy had Marshall 2x12 JMP 50 watt, the sound just went through you....Took me 30 years to buy a Marshall, why???
The studio pro 40 is seriously one of the greatest amplifiers ever created… a lot of tube amps can’t even get half way to the level of badassness the studio pro 40 is on. That’s before you get curious and plus that bright knob… that’s when the mullet comes out and the party starts
LOL!!!!!
I love my Studio Pro 40, bought mine in '83, still rocks!
Every video you do just reestablishes my GAS problem. You do good work, sir.
Thanks man, thats a nice compliment! ;-)
The studio sounds more open and clear, once again thanks johan
Thanks Shawn!
Two weeks ago I bought a Bandit 75. It''s already become my go to amp. These really are great! The Superlead Sleeps...
The pacer is a great amp
Johan you're playing is spot on! Love your style, and taste in music. You really made the Studio Pro sing.
It’s pretty much a decade with 30 more watts reverb a bright switch and a 12. A studio pro 40 will do anything I honestly wish peavey would reissue it
Picked up a 1983 Studio Pro 40 based upon this video, knowing the Johna makes everything sound good. I could not believe the tone and the volume!!!
Had a studio Pro 40 in the 80s 👍🏻. Great little amp and I Just ordered a mint one off of EBay for a second fun amp.
Well done and thanks for sharing brother!Enjoyed the tones of both from your talented hands!Be Well!
Thanks my friend ;-) Cheers
Great job, Johan! I love your amp comparisons. I really like the compression of the Bandit, but you brought out the best in both amps.
Thanks Carl, I’m glad to hear that!
That Pro 40 rocks, great sounds, I can think of a hundred bands that has that sound.
The Pro 40 sounds so much better to me but I like brighter amps. Congrats on hitting 50k subs by the way!
Thanks Dean! :-)
Anyone else expecting Johan to say, "It's a shame you won't be joining us for dinner, Mr Bond..."?
My first amp was a Studio Pro 50. Had a good clean sound, but the distortion channel wasn't the best. Luckily, it took pedals very well. Traded it to a buddy about 20 years ago for a Randall 40-watt bass combo. Both amps are still going strong.
Yeah the build quality of these are top notch
I sometimes forget how much I like those old Sunn/Fender Eminence square-magnet speakers.
It would be very interesting to hear how the Bandit performs with an old Eminence...
Nicely executed, as always!
Thanks Oren!
To my taste, the Scorpion speaker really holds back the potential versatility of this era of Bandits; it just sounds too muffled.
Awesome head to head Johan, the Studio Pro is the winner to my ears ,maybe it is the smaller cabinet, but seams tighter and brighter on the attack
Thanks Stepvan!
I bough m'y first Peavey bandit because m'y friends have Peavey bandit 65 ibought A Peavey bandit 75 and Peavey backtage plus 35w and Peavey rage and liste go on!

Thanks again for the great reviews my friend......... Mike(Whitey).
Thanks Mike, I’m glad to hear that.
Studio Pro has all the treble. Bandit has all the beef. I bet they would sound best playing through both with a splitter.
Thanks! But it's a pity that you did not compare the clean tones.
A dynamic variac is a good description! :-)
Great video! Just bought a Studio Pro 40. Going to do some simple mods so I can hook it up to my Heil Sound Talkbox.
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Awesome demo as usual Johan !!!
Great demo as always. I'd love to hear the 40 with a vintage 30.
Thanks, I bet that would work great
Hi Johan i know this video is old so i dont know if you will see this, but i have a Peavey teal stripe bandit eith the original scorpion speaker and wanted to know your thoughts on the scorpions as far as how they measure up to your favourite greenbacks,i ask cause i was pondering whether to keep the scorpion in there or to buy a more popular replacement speaker, thank hou for your content you have a natural talent in your fingers with the guitar Johan
My very first real amp was a 1983 Peavey Studio Pro 40. It rocked.
Me too, and I was just gifted one last night! Very stoked. Def some riffs in there waiting to come out.
Hi Stuart! Yeah pairing speakers and amps can make the difference for sure. Cheers
I really hate the Scorpion Speakers in these I have hemp speakers in my 2 main amps and eminence regulars in the other ..i think I will put a Vintage 30 in one to try it !!!

Hello, I'm going to record a video about Studio 40 and I want to ask you if it is possible to put your video?
Can i embed your videos in my Studio 40 review? link to you I am leaving in my review.have a nice day!
I played a Bandit for years with an original Zoom 505...........I got a lot of compliments on my sound
I adored my 80s BANDIT til it was Stolen but now I’ve been offered a Studio Pro CHEAP BUT it is the 60 version NOT the 40…do they compare?
Love the warmth of the bandit as well as how it would fit well in a mix/live setting. Studio amp would work well for a solo recording or a soloist as itll take some eqing to get that guitar to sit right
We’re the tone controls set the same? Bandit is a lot more mid-rangy and like previously mentioned, sounds muffled.
Have you checked if your Bandit speaker has dust or foam goo in the voice coil gap? It’s missing all the high end... The magnet comes off, then you can clean it. cheers!
50k subs, congratz my friend !
Thanks my friend! :-)
I had the 40 back in the day ....great little amp
are they really both at max volume? i mean i guess that's nothing compared to any of his marshalls...
Pro 40 is my pick. Bandit sounds muffled to me like others have commented. Both sound good in your capable hands Johan. Rock on bro!
Thanks brother!
Not sure if it's the mic, but I like the sound of the Studio.
Thank you!
Have you considered doing an old Peavey 260 Standard? Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) has two in his rig. Cheers!
Yeah, first chance I get!
That was a great, i had peavey bandit just like that, it was my first amp! Thanks for making these videos!
Thanks Bill
It's crazy how great they both sound in their own respective rights. Thanx for the interesting and eye opening video.
Thanks Jimmie, great to hear that!
studio wins easily - the bandit just sounds like it's missing some frequencies
bloody nice playing as always though Johan! greetings from Denmark
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
Those eminence speakers are great... no wonder the old timers love the studio pros
I like them both for their different tones.
So glad I bought my studio Pro 40 years ago. You're going to make the prices skyrocket again like you did the Marshall Bass 12 G10 combo 🤣 🤣 🤣
I'm a bit bummed by the Bandit. Idk if this is because of the speakers?
The scorpion speaker is a bit dark
Studio 40 for me! Would be interesting to test hook them parallel to make a sort of stereo sound? ( or 2 Marshalls.or Vox Ac 30 or twin reverbs..so much possible..) I love I bit delay and bouncing stereo..got infected because of Blackstar stuff
Thanks, yeah they would sit nice together
I also have a Peavey Encore 65, 2-Special 130's and just got another Studio Pro 40 and a combo MX tube amp ....I had one of these but someone stole it out of our rehearsal space !
So I have a total of 7 Studio Pro 40's .....1 at home, 3 at my storage unit, 1 head convert, 1 combo at the shop and my son has one ! ....and everytime I play them I can get what I need !
Have you or could you do a vid on the peavey classic 50?
Hi, I have a video of Classic 30
ua-cam.com/video/03kG5q1DStY/v-deo.html
Will do classic 50 too soon. Cheers
I’d love to see you demo a Peavey Mace like the ones Skynyrd used, although I imagine they’re a bit hard to come by…
Hi! I will do a Deuce soon which is the 100W version!
Deuce is 120 Watt, Mace 160 Watt. Both extremely loud :-) Can't wait for that video Johan!! Really appreciate to see you're doing a Peavey history tour!
Johan will lay a DUECE while he's doing the demo review on one. LMAO
More like he'll PLAY Deuce by Kiss while demo'ing it
I saved my Peavey Backstage Plus from a guy who had it stored for 40years nearly.
Thanks man, Im gonna check it out! :-)
Peavey amps of the 80's were so underrated!
Today we gonna "compare"?! I want to "check out"! :)
Great channel, amazing work!
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Not only do they sound good the are easy to work on, ic's are in a socket and very well made. i have a bandit 65 sounds better than most tube amps.
the bandit sounds dark, it needs a strat. though, i believe everything needs a strat
Hahaha! Cheers ;-)
@Greg Walker OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Which sounded better?
Are there any killer Swedish bands that you would recommend from the 70s? I find it so striking that the English ruled the scene then. How was it that Germany and Sweden and other places didn’t get in on the action so far?
I'm taking the studio pro all day!
Thanks
Hi, Johan!
Actualy I told you about my "love" to Bandits, but Solo 40 is much more stronger and crunchy. Solo is the winner in that duel. Nothing to say more. Ultimate amp for distortion and for soloes. SOLO!:-))
Have a great weekend!
And play with passion, like said my friend Jake Smith from Detroit (I guess, you know him too).
Zigfrid
Have a great weekend my friend!
What the f***k ? Is that really the drive channel on these amps straight in, without any distortion/overdrive pedals ? Damn, that sounds exactly like i want it to. Played on that generation Bandit and Deuce amps, it seems Peavey hit a home run with that series!
Studio pro was nice, the Bandit sounded like it had a blanket over it.
Thanks!
Johan, have you had a chance tp try any of the new Peavey bandits? I'm curious how they compare considering the fanfare these older one get.
Haven’t tried the latest one but I’ve played the red stripe which is great too, check this one out
ua-cam.com/video/2NNZGjgJL2Q/v-deo.html
Hi! I haven’t but I would very much like to. Try Celestion G12-65 instead, those have a much richer mid. Cheers
Oh the memories.
:-)
Tell me about it 😆. Had one as a teen in the 80s and I found myself just buying a mint one off EBay 🎸👍🏻
These are the bomb !! I own 5 of these actually I own 7 of them but my son has absconded two of them !!!
The pro sounds alive, while the bandit seemed the speaker is covered by a blanket.
Thanks, yeah it won’t cut through any denser mixes
I saw an amp called mezzabarba on youtube and the guy said that it was the best amp.. i can't tell the difference from other good amps. But that said amp is very expensive. If there would be any possibility, can you do a demo for mezzabarba? Thanks
Would of Been cool to swap the speakers to see the difference 😮 great video though😊
It's strange that you are now posting all these demos of Peavey amps, because the only Peavey dealer in town here just recently closed his doors. I did a walk through of the closed shop before he put up a bulk sale. Maybe one day in the not so distant future Peaveys will come back into demand.
I try my best to stay away from the commercial side of this :-)
Nice - would love to hear them both on together
Thanks, I’ll keep it in mind
The Studio pro sounds absolutely great. The bandit is really mid focused.
Both great value amps
Are the speakers different sizes?
Both are 12". The Bandit has a scorpion and the pro has an Eminence
I have no idea which one your playing
Hi Johan great great video as always, i just recently watched your video on the MusicMan RD112 50 , how does the Peavey Bandit stack up to the MusicMan, just curious, i know you are seriously busy but wanted to ask, Peace and keep rockin' great stuff !
I wish someone would remake the Studio Pro 40 best amp I have ever used ....period ..the only amp that gets close is a Wooley Coats MK II
would you like to buy a studio pro 50
I buy everyone of these I can turn my friends on to them !!! ...I am almost over tube amps ..these have totally won me over ...the Bandit sounds too muddy ...the Studio Pro 40 is the secret weapon !!!
Yeah this scorpion speaker was very dark
Try it with a G12T75. My teal stripe Bandit has a scorpion and it’s got the rolled off treble like this.
That Studio Pro 40. 😍
A speaker swap could be interresting. Some of the Eminence speakers are quite good.
Yeah, the main difference is in the speakers
The Studio 40 sounds glorious. The Bandit is a bit muffled.
Thanks man
Awesome riffing! Both amps have very complimetary tone.
Thanks, glad to hear it!
Scorpion is the sole reason for the darkness right? When a speaker makes an eminence seem bright you know it’s dark.
Yeah it is :-) I play it though a Marshall Cab here ua-cam.com/video/QS17p9XOCMA/v-deo.html
Pro 40 wins. But if U used both in a dual amp set-up, the Bandit would provide some good low end !!
Thanks man, yeah I think so too
Studio Pro sounds better to me
Thanks!
Studio pro or red stripe 🤷
Wonder how this compares to a jtm + guvnor + R9 😂 sorry i just had to ask!
I play this Bandit through a vintage Marshall Cab here

Whether you put a JTM+Guvnor+R9 or a Bandit+Epiphone through that cab it will sound basically like that.
i see you are still wearing clothes.... when is the naked-goldtop-marshall-wall-balcony-video coming? :D
Hahaha! Be careful what you wish for ;-)
Doom Metal- Bandit
Everything Else- Studio
Cheers :-)
That’s kind of funny, because I was of the opposite opinion. Maybe the speakers we use to watch the video affect the outcome? Either way, Johan rocks!
C your never to old to rock n roll huh boss
I wish Peavey would reissue the Studio Pro 40 made like these were, not the Chinese versions ...which to my ears sound
terrible. The only thing I would want would be a 80 or 100 watt speaker ....maybe a Neo speaker of some kind .....to get
close to a tube sound in a small not over powering amp ...that is virtually maintenance free would sell !!! I use two of these on my gigs with the Local Legends and Dixie Tornados ...one is set for a tele or strat and the other one for Humbucker guitars and AB box, a tuner, delay, chorus, and trem and an antique Rat pedal ...it is all I need ! ..
Cheers Greg!
.Back in the day, everyone that fooled with an electric guitar, had a Peavey...One guy had Marshall 2x12 JMP 50 watt, the sound just went through you....Took me 30 years to buy a Marshall, why???
Yeah there is nothing like a Marshall JMP
