I knew you could tap your card but I had always assumed it was just for getting a simple 100 one way ride, nothing else. While I may not need this info since I travel to the city via a different kind of regional ticket, this will be extremely handy for when my friends will come visit, both Italian and foreign, thank you very much!
Sure! Yah originally it started out with just the metro it did not work well in conjunction with busses so it kinda was a 1 ticket option but not it has been implemented in all busses and you can now use it and get the better of the available rates. 1 ride or max daily. Thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for that tip about tap and go. We are heading to Rome in the near future and I was getting nervous about buying tickets and having to validate them etc. now I know I can just use my credit card and I don’t have to make any decisions. I really appreciate your videos.
Thanks for the tip! Sounds like the same system TfL has in London. I know in Laval, Quebec, the Société de transport de Laval has the payment by credit card on their buses, but there's no daily cap. they do have $1 smog days though, where you can ride their buses for $1 on that day.
Nice thing about Rome they do have. cap so after about 5 rides in 24 hours the rest are not charged. Nice thing it also runs by 24 hours not by the day making it a better value
Using the metro is very safe as long as you do not make yourself a target. If you have a bag or purse, keep it in front of you. Don’t carry your passport with you and if you have money, just have enough for the day and credit card for the day and keep it in and money belt, I guess what I’m saying is don’t become an easy target because there are many easy targets and that’s what there after. Pickpockets are also popular on some of the more popular bus routes such as bus number 64 and others so and general just be smart about it and you’ll be fine.
Very helpful! If asked to show ticket, can you just show them your Google Wallet app with the active credit card or do you have to dig out the physical credit card to show?
We also did the same in London, however it got a bit tricky when we did day trips to Windsor and Hampton Court. You had to keep your eyes out for the tap out kiosk because you don't walk through a turnstile to get out.
Good info, but this could make it better: (1) You always have to use the same card if you think you're going to make more than 4 trips per 24 hours, so the system can track them and give you the best rate. If not, you might want to buy a paper ticket so you're not waving a credit card around. (2) Can you have the card in a thin wallet, or just under the outside skin of a purse? Or does it have to be exposed? (3) Please say more about interacting with ticket inspectors. Are you expected to hand over the card, or just hold it up by the edge to be scanned? Are they wearing uniforms? Or do they look like thieves? Thanks!
Thanks some thing to consider. You will need to use your own card but can be on phone or smartwatch. If you tap twice in a row on a bus with same card it will only charge once from what I have been told since the second tap is less than 100 minutes. If you get stopped the checker are in uniform with ID around their neck and you can just tap their device for verification.
It needs to be able to track you individually so it can give you the best rate. Max it will charge you is €7 for a 24 hour period and other discounts for 48 and 72 hours so that means you need you own card for each rider. Kids 10 and under are free. Note that you can use the same credit card for multiple riders as long as it is on different devices. You could each use it on your own phones or smart watches.
@@RozierRoma Yeah. You can get an actual pass which you can load credit on etc, or use a contactless bank/credit card or something like Apple Pay. It'll work out the cheapest fare for the journey you're doing and has a fare cap of £15.60 per day if you're using the WHOLE network (it's tiered based on the zone you're in). You can use it for everything. Bus, commuter trains, trams, Overground and Underground. They all work the same, just tap in and out at the start and end of your journey (or once on the busses, they have a set fare).
Ty!! So do you register your cc somehow with the Tap & Go system, or do you just walk up to any kiosk and tap. If you are traveling with 2 people, do you tap twice, do you use 2 different cc? Thanks again!
At the front of every bus and at the entry to Subway you will need to tap your CC or phone.watch. You must each have your own cc of the same one but on different devices. It needs to be able to track you individually. If you tap the same card or same devise twice it will only charge once and if caught you may be fined. Oh first question...no need to register, just start tapping
Tap and go makes getting on public transportation super easy and convenient. Way better than standing in line to buy tickets or not having tickets and getting caught. Have a great trip.
Location is a big deal. Choose somewhere central like Campo dei Fiori neighborhood. From there sights, restaurants and transportation are all close by. Have fun!
It tracks you individually, so each person would need to have their own credit card or if you use the same credit card it would have to be on separate devices example everyone has the same credit card on their own phone or smart watch
Just FYI, if you tap twice on a bus, it will only charge you once because it has been less than 100 minutes since the last tap therefore everybody needs to have their own credit card or device
You need different cards. Assigning a different device running on the same card to each member of the family won't work, system would just mess up and you won't be able to demonstrate your payments. It's not for families, unfortunately.
I don’t have any firsthand knowledge, but I would just Google it and see what they have. I know they now offer an arena floor option for the Colosseum that allows you to get an interior view of the Colosseum without any stairs. As far as free access to other sites, you just have to google that and see what you come up with.
You should be able to login both with the same password and ID on two different phones at the same time but if by chance there’s a problem just message me and I will send you out a code for a free guidebook
@@RozierRoma OK we purchased the guide. Have a few questions. How do we log in without having to go to the email each time? How do we get the PDF? I thought that came with the purchase. TY

It does not include the Leonardo express that has a separate ticket last I checked it was €14. You can get a taxi for a flat fare of €55 depending how many people are in your party. It may be a better value. Plus the taxi will take you directly to your hotel or Airbnb for that flat rate.
I’m going to both Milan and Rome in January 2025. I’ve read that in Milan you have to tap both in and out of the bus and or train (specifically ATM transport). Does that apply here too?
great info. i am taking my son for Christmas/ new years. can i tap twice in a row for 2 tickets or need to pay with separate cards, and do i need to sign up for this? thank you.
It is set up to track your usage individually so you will need to use a different card or same card on different device such as a phone. If you tap twice in a row it will only charge once. Here is another helpful video you may like.ua-cam.com/video/DPVXyWiYuio/v-deo.htmlsi=aEYiRiMX-aluLIdj
@@RozierRomagreat advice. in Rome as i type on Christmas day. we went to church and then rode to 2 lines for 5 stops. more confident to travel when everything opens again.
Kids are 10 years or or less they do not have to pay to be on the metro or buses. You can use also ATM cards as long as they have the tap ability. You can use the same credit card as long as it is on four separate devices. One person could be using a card and the other three could be using the card on their phones.
Thanks so much. I love your videos. This is very helpful. So when you go through the turn style after you do the tap and go, then do you choose what line you want to travel on?
That is a trick question!! Yes and no. Most stations once in you decide the direction after going through turn style but some have separate entrances one for each direction. Just be aware of that and the direction you need to go. At Termini train station is the only place the A line and B line cross and that you decide after going through. They never make to super easy!
New subscriber here, and a serious THUMBS UP for this video! One question. Regarding bus, metro and trams - do you tap just once when you get on, or do you have to tap again before getting off? I know that in some other countries you have to tap both times but not sure about Italy. Thanks!
90% just when you get on but there are a few stations on the blue line that you need to tap to get turn style to let you out. It seem like it would be all or none but just the way in is in Rome
Aslo just fyi the tap & go are at the front of the bus so better to enter in the front when busses are full. Maybe they will add them to the back too one day or maybe there are some but I have not seen any in back yet.
You will need to purchase single ride tickets or 1,2 or 3 day unlimited or everyone 12 and over need own credit card or devise. You can use the same credit card if on separate devices such as phones or smart watches. I need to be able to track you individually so it can charge the right amount.
Very useful video, thanks. How can I use tap and go for me and my 13 yo son? He doesn't have a contactless card. Can I tap my card twice, once for me and once for him?
No, if you tap twice it will only charge one as it is tracking an individual. You will need to put the card on a devise (phone or smart watch). One can use the card and the other the device or both could have same card on separate devices.
1) 2:28 time mark - you make a statement that metro requires a new ticket every time. This is not true. I was in Rome this September, and I saw and used the option to buy metro tickets good for 5, 10, or 15 trips. 2) I think that indiscreet usage of one's credit card is a very bad idea. When you "tap-and-go" you have no idea how much your card is getting charged, plus you may have big trouble tracking all those charges made on a given day. 3) Finally, flashing your credit card left and right at every step in a crowded city is also unwise.
I disagree. If you buy tickets for 5, 10 of 15 trips you are paying €1.5 each trip. If I use Tap & Go 10 times in 24 hours I am only charged a max of €7, €12,50 for 48 hours, a far better deal. Connect your phone to your card such as apple pay and you do not need to get your credit cards out. Plus I did not need to find a place to purchase the ticket in the first place.
Thanks so much for this really helpful video. We're going to travel in the near future. I had a question, can we use 1 credit card for 2 people? i.e through Smartphone and through the physical card? Or we need 2 separate cards Also, this Tap and Go system works in other cities of Italy too? Thanks in advance
@@RozierRomaSame card on their phones? Not sure what that means. You mean in their wallet on their phone (iphone)? Also, cannot use same physical card twice for two people?
Hello I am trying to go from Ciampino CIA use a bus to Cinecitta station and then metro to the city center. Do I need 2 tickets or just 1 for entire trip. Thank you
Thank you for the info! I read in Rome’s tap&go page that each person has to use a card with their name on it, does it mean I still have to buy paper tickets for my children older than 10 but not old enough to have their own credit/debit card?
Do the have phones? If they do they can use your same credit card but on their own phone and that will work. The same credit card can be used on several devices, everyone has to have their own devise. That is how they track and charge the correct rate.
Yes they need tickets. I don't know how accurate the english translation is on the official website, but it's clearly explained that if you pay with different devices for the same card the system (at least, I assume there could be even problems to demonstrate all the payments) won't be able to apply the best fare, so you'll be charged for all the taps even within the 100 minutes an the maximum cap won't apply.
Kids 10 and under ride free with paying adult. Tap and go is tracked individually so everyone will need own phone or card to pay with. You can use the same credit card but it would need to be on different devices. I hope that makes sense
Tap and go is only for buses, trams, and subway. If by chance they do check for your ticket, they carry a small device that can detect if you’re cars were used to purchase tab and go. It’s a simple and quick process no need for paper tickets.
Hey Rozier, so we did it by using Tap and Go for our metro and it was such a breeze. No fuss in lining up long queue, buying tickets via machines which may not work and tickets could be faulty. Tap and Go was easy and convenient. Our concern initially was that the scanners may overcharged us but that did not happen. We use it in Milan and other cities so thanks to you! Good high value tip!
My first trip to Rome , today was my first bus ride. Had to buy the ticket get on the bus forgot to validate it .. inspector got on fined me €54 , ruined my day.
The answers yes and no. It tracks you individually so if you want to use the same credit card, it needs to be on two separate devices like your phone or smart watch. One could have it on their phone. The other could use the credit card directly you get the idea, if you were to tap it twice, it would only charge you once
Hard to pick one there are places all over. CC are accepted almost everywhere with the exception of most but not all street vendors, if you are there on a Sunday you should visit the Porta Portese market with close to 700 vendors but only open on Sundays morning until about 2pm. Lots of cheap interesting stuff
New subscriber, love your content (thank you!), it's going to help us tremendously on our upcoming trip. However, this tip is not helpful for us, we're a family of 4 with 1 credit card....am I missing something? Seems like we'll just have to buy tickets. About tickets, I have one question: if you're boarding a trip which will last more than 100 minutes, do I need to buy multiple tickets in advance?
1 credit card may work if everyone had it on their own devise. (phone or smartwatch) Kids 10 and under ride for free. If that does not work you will need to purchase single ride tickets or 1,2 or 3 day passes. Also ATM debit cards work as well.
FYI, we have the same situation (family of 4, 1 credit card) and all of our friends who've done this say that the one card on multiple phones works just fine.
You can use the same card as long as it is on 2 separate devices. It needs to track you individually. If you were to go on the bus and tap it twice I will only register 1 payment because the second tap with made within the 100 minute validation period. I hope that helps.
No need to set up Apple Pay or PayPal. You can use the credit card directly. Some people prefer not to have their credit cards out for fear of getting lost but yeah they were just fine. That’s typically what I do.
I've used this system in London and it's superb, but it has limitations. In London you require a separate credit for each passenger. You CANNOT use the same card to tap in for multiple people. And, 2… you mush ALWAYS use the same card throughout the day to maintain your running account. So if you have a bank card and , say, Apple Pay on your phone, do not mix them up during the day or you end up running two accounts on the transport computer. Is this the same in Rome. Do I need two separate cards for two people? Your assistance would be appreciated.
@@RozierRoma strangely it was never marketed for tourists very actively. Perhaps to not piss off ticket sellers. I used to live along Metro C which was one of the first places where it was available, so I have been using it since day 1.
If you are using the same card for 2 people it will need to be on separate devices. You could use the actual card and she could use it on her phone or you could both use it from your own phones. I hope that helps.
Tap & Go is for busses, trams and subway. Trains need separate tickets.. Train to or from Fiumincino airport is on Leonardo Express train 14euros each, Taxi is flat 50 euros up to 4 people and from hotel to airport or airport to hotel. May be less expensive to get taxi depending on how many people but even for 2 people it makes sence as it is so much easier,
I used my debit card and it charged 1.50€ . All day whenever I used tap again it didn’t charge me again. I am wondering how it didn’t charge after 100 minutes like you said.
Kids 10 and under are free. Everyone else will need their own device (phone, smart watch) The same card can be one multiple devices. Everyone need their own devise. Also an ATM card with "touch" will also work. If that does not work you will need to purchase paper tickets
You can use the same credit card if it is one separate devices such as phones, smart watches. Everyone need there own so it can track you use to give the correct rate because there are discounts when used enough on a day, days or week. Kids 10 and under can ride for free.
No, if you use the same card with different devices the system won't work. You're going to get a fee cause you can't demonstrate the payments or you'll end to be charged for each tap even if it's within the 100 minutes and the 7 euros per day maximum (or what it is) won't apply. Two credit cards or tickets.
@@RozierRoma Great! Also, do you know if there are lockers at the train stations to store luggage while we explore? Thank you so much!! You and your vides have been so helpful!
10 yrs under are free. If you want to use same credit card for 2 people you will need to put the card on at least one phone. Each user must have own card or devise.
Yes, but it needs to be used on two separate devices meaning you can both put it on your own phones or one of you could use the card and the other the phone. It also accepts ATM cards.
For the metro iti is good for one time below. For bus 100 minutes. Tap everytime on busses even if last tap was less then100 minutes. It will bot charge you is less but will protect you.
@@RozierRoma thanks. Been to Roma 33 times so far love tap and go. Always wondered if your ticket expires in the middle of a trip how you would be protected .
Kids 10 and under. Do not need to pay for the metro. If you’re with someone older, you cannot tap twice as it’s an individual tracking system everybody will need either their own credit card or the same credit card on their own device. Otherwise you will need to purchase tickets.
Every person needs to have there own card or devise. Kids 10 and under are free. If you are using 1 credit card put it on phone for second person or on 2 phones. If you tap twice in a row it will only charge once
You will not be able to use tap and go until you get into the city. From the airport, you’ll either need to take a train, a taxi, the bus, if you take a taxi, it’s called the Leonardo express, and it will take you directly to the train station Terney. From there you can catch the metro to where you need. Personally I think from the airport it’s best just to take a taxi. It will cost you €50. If you’re by yourself you can get on the Leonard express for €14 and then another one and a half euros on the metro and you can use tap and go for the metro.
Great system but how do they protect it from hackers! Everyone using their personal credit cards over the course of a day seems like an attractive criminal target.
Not suitable for families because it's one credit card for each traveller. No possibility of "multiple" payments. If you're four (and kinds are over the age for payment which I don't remember what it is) you need to "tap" with four different cards. Feaseble but not for everyone.
@@RozierRoma don't agree on this. It's clearly said that you can't buy tickets for others and that if you don't use the same device the system won't apply the best fare, so you will - at least, chances are you won't even be able to demonstrate all your simultaneous payments- be charged every time you tap, even within the 100 minutes laps, without the maximum cap per day.
@@LaTulliola6007 when payment is on you owe devise you are not buying for others. The reason you can’t purchase for others is because it needs to track you individually so it changes you correctly the same card can be used if on different devices. It’s really not too complicated.
I would defenetly buy tickets for kids.
This is becoming the world norm. Not just big cities You left off the most important part - it has to be a contactless credit card. The US is behind in adoption of it

Thanks for this great info. A question on multiple passenger. Do I have to tap 3 times with same credit card for 3 different passenger?
It needs to be able to track you individually so it can give you the best rate. Max it will charge you is €7 for a 24 hour period and other discounts for 48 and 72 hours so that means you need you own card for each rider. Kids 10 and under are free. Note that you can use the same credit card for multiple riders as long as it is on different devices. You could each use it on your own phones or smart watches.
Good to see more and more places using systems like Oyster in London. Getting around with your Apple Watch or whatever is pretty nice.
Is that what they call it in London?
@@RozierRoma Yeah. You can get an actual pass which you can load credit on etc, or use a contactless bank/credit card or something like Apple Pay. It'll work out the cheapest fare for the journey you're doing and has a fare cap of £15.60 per day if you're using the WHOLE network (it's tiered based on the zone you're in). You can use it for everything. Bus, commuter trains, trams, Overground and Underground. They all work the same, just tap in and out at the start and end of your journey (or once on the busses, they have a set fare).
Nice!
Very useful information 😊

You're welcome!

Tap & Go is super helpful! Glad you found my video
This is great. How would you do this with a family? Can you use one card for everyone's tickets or does each person need their own credit card?
It tracks you individually, so each person would need to have their own credit card or if you use the same credit card it would have to be on separate devices example everyone has the same credit card on their own phone or smart watch
Just FYI, if you tap twice on a bus, it will only charge you once because it has been less than 100 minutes since the last tap therefore everybody needs to have their own credit card or device
If that does not work, you can still purchase 24, 48, 72 hour bus and metro tickets
You need different cards. Assigning a different device running on the same card to each member of the family won't work, system would just mess up and you won't be able to demonstrate your payments. It's not for families, unfortunately.

@@RozierRoma Do you have any suggestion or advice on how people with disabilities get free access to the museums?
I don’t have any firsthand knowledge, but I would just Google it and see what they have. I know they now offer an arena floor option for the Colosseum that allows you to get an interior view of the Colosseum without any stairs. As far as free access to other sites, you just have to google that and see what you come up with.

thank you ….we are traveling in April 2025…..by the way will this be for the Leonardo express also?
It does not include the Leonardo express that has a separate ticket last I checked it was €14. You can get a taxi for a flat fare of €55 depending how many people are in your party. It may be a better value. Plus the taxi will take you directly to your hotel or Airbnb for that flat rate.

Silly question, but do you "Tap" when you get off the bus or metro, or just when you enter? Thanks in advance for answering a silly question.
Just when you enter. There are a coupe of metro stations you will need to tap to get out but you will more than likely not run into them
I’m going to both Milan and Rome in January 2025. I’ve read that in Milan you have to tap both in and out of the bus and or train (specifically ATM transport). Does that apply here too?
bus no tapping out only 2 or 3 stations for metro do you need to tap out and they are stations most tourists do not visit.

Hi, would it work for DEBIT card (instead of credit)?
Thanks for all your clips, super helpful, love them!
Yes, as long as it has the touchless ability I think it’s called the pulse logo. If you can tap and use it elsewhere, you can use it on Rome Metro.
Great video! Curious about how to tap n go for a family of 4 on the same credit card?
@@RozierRoma Got it. So that's metro, which means that on buses and trams it's always one tap when you get on and that's it. Thanks!

how does tap and go work for a family of three? Do you all have to have seperate cards or can you use the same card for all three people?

I knew about tap and go because you mentioned it in another video. 😅
Ah, nice! #TheMoreYouKnowTheBetter
Or we need 2 separate cards

Tap & Go is just for Rome. Answer to first question yes. You can use physical card and others can use same card on their phones. Have a fun visit!!
@@RozierRomaSame card on their phones? Not sure what that means. You mean in their wallet on their phone (iphone)? Also, cannot use same physical card twice for two people?

No. With the exception of a few metro exits that will require you to tap to get out. Not super common but there are a few.
what if you have multiple family members? does each person need a unique credit card?
It can only be the same credit card if it is all on separate devices. You could all have the same credit card on your own phones.

You will need two. City busses are 100 minutes but each time on the metro you need a new ticket
@@RozierRoma Thank you very much. Your channel is very informative. We really enjoy your videos.
Nice! How would you pay for a group of four for example?
Kids 10 and under ride free with paying adult. Tap and go is tracked individually so everyone will need own phone or card to pay with. You can use the same credit card but it would need to be on different devices. I hope that makes sense
is it possible to pay with the same credit card or movile photo for two people?
As long as the card is on separate devises.
what jacket is that?
Funny you ask. It is a company out of Utah QED. Not sure if they are still in business.
Rozier, what about validating your credit/debit card if we use Tap&Go method for trains, bus and tram? Do we need to validate as with paper tickets?
Tap and go is only for buses, trams, and subway. If by chance they do check for your ticket, they carry a small device that can detect if you’re cars were used to purchase tab and go. It’s a simple and quick process no need for paper tickets.

The other could use the credit card directly you get the idea, if you were to tap it twice, it would only charge you once

What if we are two people? Can use the Same Card Twice?
No. Different cards
You can use the same card as long as it is on 2 separate devices. It needs to track you individually. If you were to go on the bus and tap it twice I will only register 1 payment because the second tap with made within the 100 minute validation period. I hope that helps.
So I just scan my Bank of America/Visa Credit Card and it works? I don't need to set up any Apple Pay or Pay Pal correct?
No need to set up Apple Pay or PayPal. You can use the credit card directly. Some people prefer not to have their credit cards out for fear of getting lost but yeah they were just fine. That’s typically what I do.
@@RozierRomathank you very much for your reply and clarification!
Yes exactly the same. It is new to Rome in 2023 and is catching on strong now but any tourists still do not know about Tap & Go.

No only local transportation. The direct train is Leonardo Express. 14 euros 1 way.

If I travel with my family can I use one credit card and tap it 4 times?

What if there’s 2 people in the party
Can i use the same card to pay?
Only if the card is on 2 separate devises. It needs to track you individually

Kids 10 and under. Do not need to pay for the metro. If you’re with someone older, you cannot tap twice as it’s an individual tracking system everybody will need either their own credit card or the same credit card on their own device. Otherwise you will need to purchase tickets.
So you tap twice for 2 people?
Every person needs to have there own card or devise. Kids 10 and under are free. If you are using 1 credit card put it on phone for second person or on 2 phones. If you tap twice in a row it will only charge once
Thank You. Will this work from FCO Airport to Euroma2 ?
Google is suggesting either shuttle bus or trainitalia in first leg of my journey.

Not suitable for families because it's one credit card for each traveller. No possibility of "multiple" payments. If you're four (and kinds are over the age for payment which I don't remember what it is) you need to "tap" with four different cards. Feaseble but not for everyone.
True, you can still but multi day tickets. Most kids have phones so you can use the same card as long as it is on different devices.
