⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Exploring Rome's Creepy Railway - The Rome/Viterbo Line (Urban Section)

  • Опубліковано 20 лип 2022
  • The Rome-Civita Castellana-Viterbo railway is a regional railway line connecting Rome, Italy, with Viterbo, the capital city of the Province of Viterbo. The trains and physical plant of this line are in extremely poor condition, leading to the common online moniker, "Rome's Creepy Railway".
The line is split into urban and exurban services. Very frequent service operates close to Rome, and a much more infrequent exurban service operates to Civita Castellana and Viterbo. Enjoy this look at a very interesting operation!

Apparently when they ordered train cars, they purchased the “variety” pack. If you ride these trains, you must be on your toes at all times to make sure you find the doors, car steps, and don’t get your arm chopped off in those guillotine doors when they close. The trains do get you there , but be aware of all the quirks.

I'm from Rome and I used to take this line a lot from Flaminio to Saxa Rubra, where the national TV (RAI) offices are. It's amazing how that looks stuck in 1980 even in 2020. Oh, and it goes even better where this line goes outside Rome and towards Viterbo: single track, tight curves, barrierless road crossings and even mechanical signals. It's a rare piece of railway archeology, almost better than the narrow gauge Roma-Giardinetti.

I feel that many prefer to take a bus from Saxa Rubra towards Viterbo rather than the clackety-clackety train 😁 At least the busses are often quite packed. Also there is a modern train operating the west side of Bracciano.

Lol the creepiest part are those living around those parts, especially evenings. I find quite sad to see in which state many of our train stations are. On the other hand older trains are way more efficient than recent ones. I still remember a regional train I was used to take during university. It was maybe for 50-60 passengers, of course not that fast, but it had leather couches in a perfect condition! Unfortunately it was later dismissed and replaced with a horrible new model.

It's like the planners of that line couldn't decide if they wanted to have a subway, a tramway, or a suburban electric line. The least the transport authority could do is raise all the low platforms to eliminate the steps!

Until 15 years ago, almost all of the line's stations had low-level platforms. Then they upgraded several ones with new high-level platforms with the exception of the Flaminio Station.

i used this a couple of times when i went to rome to see concerts at the parco della musica beyond the parioli neighborhood where i'd got a room. the euclide stop was the closest to my destination and the fastest way there. rather than creeped out (it's a little outdated but nothing that i hadn't already seen, living further north in the italian peninsula than rome) i was puzzled by the general lack of personnel and directions, kinda seemed like i was taking a random train. but at the end it worked fine.

here we call it "Il Trenino" it is a really bad line and the trains always have problems, i live near a station and sometimes it is really really noisy when it breakes. it must be renovated ah this line connects the suburbs of rome to the center, ro its really important and a lot of people go on it.
