The only people that think all communities in Punk are the same clearly do not understand Punk. Goth is Punk, Hardcore is Punk, Emo is Punk. All of these subgenres (plus more) have distinct music and fashion compared to each other, but the mentalities and values are more similar. I like to refer to it as a Punk Family Tree, we all hold the values of being Punk while also developing our own smaller communities around specific subgenres of Punk.
Yeah, I had a friend who was more into classic punk, while I consider myself goth, but there was a LOT of overlap, enough for us to be really good friends.
they're all about going against the status quo, so they all have something in common.
The people who think all the communities are the same tend to be interpreting punk in its “commodified” version - juvenile delinquency turned into an aesthetic to be capitalized upon, faux anti status quo, a meaningless style instead of a method of projecting your feelings about the world.

Ro's videos are always so good. She's one of the video essayists I can consistently watch no matter what mood I'm in because she really manages to keep my attention. Her humor is super on point. She also manages to always advocate for kindness, too. Another banger per usual.

I hate videos that just complain about a guy or a channel: sure, these things are based on wrong ideas and could lead to very harmful things but as you said yourself, you're just building up blocks to just knock them down, and we all know that after watching nothing much is going to change.
The fact that you stopped and showed nice moments and you straight up talked about the voyeuristic nature of videos like these makes me so happy, you're really top notch, one of my favorite UA-cam channels.

Imo the prevalence of these things getting popular with younger people is the direct result of kids only spaces being destroyed on the internet. They're looking for a community, and in the 2000s that was Club Penguin, Webkinz, Neopets, the list went on. ALL of them are gone or not what they once were. Right wing media is filling that hole left behind and I really, really wish that more people would realize that and get worried.
Yeah, I think even now if people tried to make more kids-only spaces or just kid friendly spaces (like some of the popular kids site years before) they’d likely get flooded with adults trying to bully kids, or worse, take advantage of them. It definitely would do good to have more spaces for kids on the internet, but they probably need a LOT of monitoring to avoid those sort of things.
Somewhat of a tangent but thank you for the 'co-opt the name phonk' line, because I have a love-hate relationship with the genre thanks to sigma phonk playlists everywhere screaming THIS IS PHONK RAAAAAAH and I'm super into the wider genre but not THAT aspect (bc misogyny, sensory sensitivity, I'm AFAB and its scary to see these people thinking violence is the answer, I hate gym culture with absolute fury yada2)
There's been so many people more knowledgeable with underground music history or has been in the scene that kept saying Drift Phonk managed to bastardize, sanitize and saturate the market of what phonk is and it's sad :(
To anyone who's interested in phonk but not the aggressive stuff, try searching: atmospheric phonk, wave phonk, house phonk or chill phonk. They're more loyal to the hip hop, specifically Memphis rap origins of the genre. Anything of Skeler's or Jxxpsinnxr's is a good start

i really apprecieate the consideration you put into these videos. i've seen many video essayists refuse to investigate their underlying assumptions, of course leading their videos to become vessels for common bigotries. they refute any criticism with ''it's not that deep.'' it's so frustrating to see such common cruelty go un-interrogated. i've always found how seriously you take everything to be breath of fresh air. thank you for putting that effort into your art!

It's kinda scary how easily adults can call literal children cringe (which, to be fair, sigma culture is very cringe) and then shame them for it. It must be even more overwhelming with the big pile-ons you find on social media. Not that I'm above this - sometimes when I'm with my cousins, I have to catch myself before playful teasing turns into bullying because I know how traumatizing that can be from an adult you trust.

I'm a woman who listens to deathcore and metalcore and I've never met another female fan of the music I like. Pretty much all the deathcore/metalcore fans I know are the sigma male, MRA, redpill, nice guy types and that is seriously concerning. When people ask me what music I like I just say "screamo" because if I say deathcore, I might be asked "isn't that the music incels like?"

As someone with ADHD phonk is one of those genres that is enjoyable. Searching for sigma male phonk or any other phonk *something* is just plain easier.
Sometimes I really need some song with these specific properties I can't describe. And if I add sigma male to it most likely I'll get something that has matching visuals. AMVs are good too.
I should add that to me it seems there are way more songs that are not enjoyable then the ones I'll like. So yeah it's the same song copy pasted but that doesn't matter. I have no problem with that though.

The concept of Alpha/Beta hierarchical structures was based on flawed science. Then we foolishly projected it onto ourselves. It's tempting to do so:
1. For those who are already of a high social standing, because it reinforces it.
2. For those who wish to reach a higher social standing. They believe that if they imitate an "Alpha" , they will become so and their life won't be so shit.
3. For those of a low social standing who don't want to believe that they can better themselves. Rather than put in any effort, it's easier in the short term to label yourself a "Beta" and call it day.
The sigma phenomenon really does appeal to the loners and the outcasts. It gives people a sense of superiority over the normies. A chance to "escape the matrix" while being defined by it. Some sour grape sentiment. It's kinda interesting, kinda worrying.
Then there's the layer of ironic humour on top to really confuse things.
I just like some of the phonk tunes, even though, yes, the 808s can often be on the wrong note entirely. 😂
