It took a while but he told me later it helped. It's some dang emotional labor, I'll tell you what, but I think it's worth it. This is also why I think Twitter fights and online dog piling are ineffective. I've never convinced a neonazi by arguing with them, largely because they know they're full of shit and don't care. But I have gotten through to people by talking to them like I want to see the good in them and give them a chance to back down from those ideas with some dignity, instead of retreating after being doused in shame and derision. That's probably because we tie so much of our self worth to what we feel we "contribute" to the capitalist machine. When your sense of value just as a human being is directly connected to your work, any critique of that system feels like an attack on your personhood. That's one reason why capitalism is so difficult to even chip away at. It sets itself up, and burrows so far in, that it practically forces everyone to accept it as one and only way of doing anything. The people at the top have slowly designed it this way; why do or say anything to jeopardize the flow of extreme wealth into your bank? The sad thing is it's become more like a game for them, they don't actually do anything with that money because the thrill is just seeing how much of a high score you can get. It's also why they see people more as numbers than, you know, people. Do most people really care about the "lives" of the NPCs in video games? No. They're just there as set dressing or a place to sell your loot at. When everything is flattened down to numbers on a spreadsheet you stop seeing what's actually behind those numbers, and at a certain point you're so desensitized that everything just becomes meaningless numbers. Giant numbers at that, numbers so large the human brain has trouble even conceptualizing how big they really are.

As someone who lives in Scandinavia here are some of the benefits you get from being in this system, i can not speak for all countries involved but they're pretty similar. Free school (obligatory, in highschool you might have to pay for lunch and the same goes for what I'd call collage but uni is free), free meals in school (until highschool and sometimes highschool), free dental and healthcare until your early 20s as well as "high cost insurance" on these things as well as most common prescribed medications, vacations and limits to how much you can legally work (this all varies a bit but yeah), unions that are hard to bust bc there's a long history of it and a bunch of other things too. I'm just a normal person from a family who's finances have fluctuated throughout my upbringing and things aren't perfect but I'd say it's nicer than living in the US, this security is something almost nobody would give up willingly. We do have high taxes (I don't know the differences between us and the US, it's like 28-30% in my specific region I think) but that kinda comes around and you benefit from it in the long run. Not to say that things aren't corrupt, where there's power and massive amounts of money there will always be corruption and politicians are the same no matter where you are but overall it's fine. Always strive for better though, things can always be better.
Between state and federal taxes I and a lot of people less well off than me pay at least 30% in taxes here in the US, our taxes are not low by any means given the sad state of our social safety net.

Ro, did you know that the tiles that caused the Challenger explosion accident were made by child laborers within a FLDS compound? If you did, then brilliant parallel to EM.
I somehow doubt it. FLDS couldn't afford the brib- er, campaign contributions to secure a NASA manufacturing contract. Nor could they produce the mountain of paperwork needed to document every stage of the process and ensure it meets the rigorous standards for spaceflight.
@@vylbird8014 actually I searched it up and it seems like they did manufacture the o-rings for NASA, but blaming the entire incident on them is probably an oversimplification I read the article, How A Cult Built The O-Rings That Failed On The Space Shuttle Challenger, it’s pretty long but I’ll just copy paste what’s important if you’re interested, “One of those businesses was started by the previous prophet (and Warren Jeffs’ father), Rulon Jeffs, in 1968 as the Utah Tool & Die; that company became HydraPak a decade later, with Rulon Jeffs on the board. HydraPak was the sole contractor NASA used in the manufacture of the space shuttle O-rings.” “In all honesty, NASA was clearly at fault here. The launch should never have gone ahead in such conditions. It’s also not necessarily fair to blame the manufacturer of the O-rings for not testing them in extremely cold conditions. It’s highly possible that those O-rings were built using the religious equivalent of slave labor. It’s just an interesting and intensely sad corner of history, one where two groups of people on the absolute opposite ends of the American spectrum - fundamentalist cult adherents and literal rocket scientists attempting to launch a teacher into space - intersected to bring us one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century.”
@@roramdin I want to add that Challenger was actually fine quality-wise, the disaster came about because it was launched outside it's intended operating conditions (it was too cold, which led to problems with an O-ring on a solid rocket booster). Engineers knew of the risk and warned their higher-ups, but the launch proceeded anyway. Columbia on the other hand was related directly to the Shuttles design, even though the manufacturing quality was still good.

One more thing about electric cars and buses VS trains: trains don't have to change tires every few months because they have metal wheels, and one tire change produces 32kg of CO2.
I'm in favour of public transportation. However, I'm not sure on that argument? For one, there are a lot of places that don't get snow and ice or get so little that they don't need to swap tires. For two, how does changing tires produce 32 kg of CO2? I get there's a cost to driving the car to the mechanic and many people can't do it at home, but then that's not much more than driving to another equally distant location. Unless you're talking about busses and the like having reduced lifespan on their tires due to constant wear and tear.
@@georgeandrews1394 Tires must be produced first, and the CO2 is released during production. I was specifically talking about electric buses, which have 6 tires, so it is 192 kg CO2 for each bus. As you said, they are always on the road so they need frequent change. Also, electric busses use lithium batteries: mining lithium eliminates the wild habitat in South America, you have fresh air in the US at the expense of wild life in South America. It is not a viable green solution, it is eco-colonialism.

this conversation is what i had with my partner who was die hard elon fan, until he met me. I'm getting intense flashbacks because we had maybe 20 conversations like this.
All's well in the end btw, he's now anti-elon communist without cringey twitter account, so I guess this works 1 dude a a time.
I also had to de-radicalize my husband from the cult of Elon
I haven't de-musked anyone yet, but I pulled a guy friend off the gamergate pipeline that led so many to the alt right. It took like a year or two of a lot of conversations that were not easy, but I was trying really hard to reach him and get him to understand me and signal that I believed him better than the ideas bouncing around that space. Some people absolutely deserve all that, but hey.
You’re doing the true lord’s work, thank you

The bit at the end about taking criticism of capitalism personally - that was so good. I recognise this everywhere.
Giant numbers at that, numbers so large the human brain has trouble even conceptualizing how big they really are.
there's so much i want to say about how you've framed this video and your eloquency, but am constantly caught off-guard on how this 50yo billionaire who could purchase all the joke books in the world still thinks "the epic narhwal bacons at midnight" is the epitome of comedy
Hey, now! He also knows "pedo guy" and "attack helicopter"!
Jesus Christ. I didn't realize he is 51 years old. This dude is acting like an edge 14 year old this late in the game??

If you did, then brilliant parallel to EM.
mmm... yes i'm very genius... correct....
I somehow doubt it. FLDS couldn't afford the brib- er, campaign contributions to secure a NASA manufacturing contract. Nor could they produce the mountain of paperwork needed to document every stage of the process and ensure it meets the rigorous standards for spaceflight.
@@vylbird8014 shh let us have this fantasy
@@vylbird8014 actually I searched it up and it seems like they did manufacture the o-rings for NASA, but blaming the entire incident on them is probably an oversimplification
I read the article, How A Cult Built The O-Rings That Failed On The Space Shuttle Challenger, it’s pretty long but I’ll just copy paste what’s important if you’re interested,
“One of those businesses was started by the previous prophet (and Warren Jeffs’ father), Rulon Jeffs, in 1968 as the Utah Tool & Die; that company became HydraPak a decade later, with Rulon Jeffs on the board. HydraPak was the sole contractor NASA used in the manufacture of the space shuttle O-rings.”
“In all honesty, NASA was clearly at fault here.

As a person who's logged over 100k miles using Comma AI's Openpilot system, stage 2-3 was never meant to be a robot chauffer, it's just a better cruise control. All cars are deadly even at slow speeds, but trusting brand new technology to ALWAYS steer you, is reckless. Great Video.
I have a two hour drive to northern Michigan tonight. I know what I’m listening to for half of it!
