I'm 54 and started renting vhs around 85 from Spec's , then Blockbuster and Sound Warehouse.
Had seen The Thing and Christine in 84. Saw Creepshow , American Werewolf , Psycho 2 ,
Dreamscape , Terminator, Strange Invaders and a handful of others in the early 80s.
Rented lots of Horror and Sci fi then buying used marked down tapes. Some new.
Wish to relive those days. Jason Lives was the first one in the series i watched and LOVED IT. Same with Elm St 3
Then went to parts 1 and so on.

Hey, Fuzz! Great to see a new video from ya. I have loved(and hated😂) horror since i was 6 years old and my dad showed me Aliens and Manhunter. It traumatized me at the time but it is my favorite genre besides romance(i know, i'm weird).
My list that i rewatch often, in no particular order-
    -Friday the 13th series
-Halloween series except for the RZ ones and Halloween Kills
-Nightmare on Elm Street series except the remake.
-Invisible Man, both the original and the 2022 version
-All the other original (not sequels)Universal Monster movies
    -Monster Squad
    -Alien and Aliens
    -Nosferatu
    -Dawn of the Dead 2006
    -The Descent
    -The Fly 1984
    -Critters 1+2
    -You're Next
-VFW(saw the first time recently and it is a new favorite!)
    -Perfect Blue
-The Thing and its prequel(i know, i know but i do enjoy it)
    -Terrifier 2
-Maniac(original is good but i actually prefer the newer one)
    -Smile
    -Jeepers Creepers
    -Saw 2+3
    -Silver Bullet
-Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs
    -Let Me In
    -Daybreakers
    -Scream movies except 6
    -Renfield
    -Ringu
    -Jaws
    -Psycho movies
    -Quiet Place movies
    -Phantasm 1+2
    -Orphan and Orphan First Kill
    -Frailty
-The Fog(i have the same release as you, Fuzz! It was a blind buy and i absolutely loved it!)
    -In the Mouth of Madness
    -The Ward
    -The Conjuring 1-3, and Annabelles
-Evil Dead(remake) and Evil Dead Rise
    -Doctor Sleep
    -Deathspa
    -House of Wax 2005
    -Ghost Ship
    -Paranormal Activity 1-4
    -Final Destination 1-3
    -Megan
-Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the remake😊
    -Amityville Horror remake
    -Christine
    -The Terminator
    -Abigail
There are many more i love but these are my most frequently rewatched. Funny you mention disliking found footage films. I hated Blair Witch Project the first time i saw it, but for some reason, i rewatched it recently and it wigged me out. I tend to prefer non horror found footage films like Chronicle and Cloverfield. I also don't typically go in for "torture" movies like Hostel or A Serbian film but i did really like Terrifier 2 a lot. For me, i think it is because i appreciate the amazing practical effects and that the violence and gore is so over the top it is essentially in campy territory. But i completely get it when people don't like it too.

Right on! Great to hear from you, my friend! Also, great list of choices you have there... There are quite a few on your list that I also enjoyed... like the Dawn of the Dead Zack Snyder remake... I just love that film. One of the best horror remakes out there, I think. And I too really l iked VFW... that one was so much fun! I also really liked Daybreakers (in fact, you just reminded me that I need to pick that one up for my collection). I also loved Doctor Sleep... fantastic sequel to the Shining! I need to check out Ghost Ship... I've never seen that one, but I'm intrigued. Also, very cool to see the Phantasm movies on your list! Love 'em! Anyway, thanks for watching and chiming in, sharing your list. Really enjoyed seeing your picks.

Excellent list Fuzz. A lot of your picks are some of my favs also. One not mentioned is the 1955 classic The Quatermass Xperiment. I saw it as a teenager in the 60s on late night tv, have seen it several times since, and it is still the scariest horror film for me personally. You mentioned mood and atmosphere and foreboding as being essential, and this film has it in spades. The pathos of the lead actor is subtle but scariest part as the film progresses. Special effects pale to films decades later, but not essential here, it's the excellent script, acting, mood and atmosphere.

A genre I always have steered away from, but I dig your enthusiasm for these films. Also, really enjoyed hearing your likes and dislikes of the various sub genres in horror. Watched Beetlejuice with the fam last night to kick off October.

Yeah I totally get it... up until a few years ago, I was in the same boat. For most of my adult life, I more or less steered clear or a lot of horror. But then I went through a bit of a change a few years ago and started to appreciate the genre a lot more than I ever had before. But it really does depend on the type of horror film. There are definitely some subgenres that I don't get into as much as others. I'm more into the old-school stuff from the 70s and 80s. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Appreciate it!

You say that once people found out THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT was not real, it had nothing going for it. I think I have to point out something obvious here: If the film was not effective, no one would have believed that it was real; BS would have been called immediately. I still think the film is a nice ghost story. And we wouldn’t have gotten BOOK OF SHADOWS, which I thought was quite good, without BLAIR WITCH. I think you have an amazing, beautiful film collection. Thank you for this list. I am always learning of horror films that I may have missed along the way. Happy spooky season!

I hate to admit I enjoy a good found footage film. I saw "Blair Witch" on opening day and it was a revelatory experience. I will admit, to my shame, that I fell for the whole "it's a real thing" publicity surrounding the film. I enjoy the first "Paranormal Activity" film as well, though I think the jump scare at the very end is a serious cop out; same with "Sinister," which I very much enjoy, and "Krampus." The cheap jump scares make me crazy. I don't have the Lions' Gate "Halloween" 4K but I have the Shout version; to be honest I prefer the 35th Anniversary Blu Ray because the color timing is more along the lines that Carpenter and Cundey looked for...duller, more autumn-like with lab processing and filters. "Halloween III" is a stunning 4K...it's just amazingly beautiful.

I have never been a huge horror fan, myself, but I'm trying. I've always loved the old Universal monster films, but that's about all I was good for unless you count horrible 80's slasher films that almost fit better into comedy than horror. I've also never been a huge fan of gore for gore's sake. When things reach a certain point, gore can take my head right out of a movie and leave me wondering why anyone would be attracted to that. This is only with the more realistic gore, gallons of fake blood on the shoulder of some dude whose arm is clearly behind his back and not on the floor doesn't have the same effect on me. Cool video. I'm going to attempt 31 horror films this month. Started off last night with Onibaba. First time watch for me. I loved it, but it may be a stretch to call it horror. Good luck with all your horror. Have a good one.

Hey Steve! Right on... I totally get where you're coming from, because I've been there too. Once I realized there were certain horror subgenres I actually liked, I started focusing more on those subgenres... and that kind of opened me up to other subgenres. But i do find that I tend to like older horror films more than contemporary, modern horror. I love the atmosphere of the older 70s and 80s films. And I'm not into the slasher subgenre as much either compared to other horror subgenres (even though there are some slashers I like). It's been a fun journey and evolution for me in my personal tastes, as I've definitely warmed up to the genre overall in a way I never would've even predicted 5 or 6 years ago. Thanks for watching and weighing in my friend! Great to hear from you on this topic!

The only thing I can say about Hostel was that I liked that the victim got revenge on the Torture Elite. But ya, I agree, I will never watch the Terrifier movies. I don't have 31 horror films. I think I only have about 5 horror films. I have the pet semetary remake and it's the worst film I ever bought.
I have that 2982 poltergeist film on 4K. It's when you watch it on 4K you realise how bad the special effects are on it but it's forgiven because it's a 42 year old film.

Also, I haven't seen the remakes for Poltergeist or ANOES yet, but I might have to check them out at some point just to see how they handled the stories. As for watching horror films I don't own for 31 Days of Horror, what I usually do is just stream anything I don't own. I have a subscription to Shudder via my Amazon Prime account (it's like $6-7 a month or something), and they always have a lot of great horror titles to stream around this time of year. Of course, not as good as watching on disc, but I do find streaming to be handy when I'm doing a marathon like this. Thanks for watching and weighing in! Really appreciate it!
